Sorry got no golden ears...

« on: Sep 01, 2009 at 08:14 AM »

Umusok bigla Sony S-301 ko when i turned it on last Saturday. I immediately pulled off the power cable, removed the unit from the shelf. I was about to pack the unit and bring it to LOVE electronics, Fairview yesterday but disturbed by my curious mind on the question of what really happened, and not so sure whether or not the repair shop accepts repair of bluray players, I decided to turn it on, one more time with that phrase "bahala na" flashing on my mind.

To my surprise, the unit turned on and functioned normally again.  After several on-off and testing I turned it off and returned the unit to the shelf. I havent watched a full movie yet with the S-301 after the incident. At least the possible misfortune is suspended. Maybe this coming weekend again when i have more time. Grin

Is there any Sony Service Center here in Fairview? OK ba ung Love Electronics sa mga bluray players? Thanks for any advice.

i would still suggest you have someone look at it sir, its quite scary that it smoked like that and nothing got busted inside.  Huh  at least have someone who's familiar with a sony BD player to have a look inside, it doesnt even have to be someone from the sony service center.  Grin

just a suggestion though....   Cheesy

I havent open yet my S-301 to check the possible source of the "Usok" because it seems to have no problem at all except that one day umusok siya and i turned it off. I played music for an hour and one movie just to wait for whatever thing that might happen. But nothing came. Baka mag ka problema pa ako kung bubuksan ko kaya i will fore go na lang the opening until it is really necessary.  Grin

if i were you sir i'd have someone take a look at it. could be a toasted cap or something like that which could lead to bigger problems in the future. however, never, by all means, take it to a sony service center. you'll return home without an arm and a leg.

hmm interesting info on Sony Service Centers -- I hope somebody would comment on Love electronics.

But I am actually wondering why the unit is seemingly nice despite the smoke, if the cap was busted or other things were toasted, etc. ?

wow what happened kaya?

nagamit ba kayo ng AVR for your unit? is your unit 110V o autovolt?

observe ninyo nalang muna sir .... I guess if hindi na nag recur ang problem, there may no longer be any reason to bring it to servicing.

if you can open it, do so nalang ...... check it physically inside for burn marks and burn odors.....

sony service centers have lengthy diagnosis and repair procedures. it could take days before you get any feedback. and they charge astronomically too (based on my experience)

the same thing happened to my aiwa 110v cd player a few years ago. it smoked so i unplugged it then tried it again after a few hours. it worked fine but after a few months the problem recurred. upon taking it to a cheap roadside service center i found out that a cap and something else got burned. twas a costly lesson to say the least.

if you want peace of mind you could open it yourself or bring it somewhere to have it checked.

I used an AVR for it because its 110. Yeah ive been trying to observe, inaamoy-amoy at hinahaplos-haplos ko pa while it is playing. Di siya umiinit, di siya nangamoy, though playing more than an hour na.

The reason of my hesitation in bringing it to a service center is that they might try to fool me by justifying that there is a damage or defect kahit wala naman silang pinalitan o ginawa. I cant live with that.  Angry Thats why i wanted it to conk out in front of me kung time na nya para if ever i will bring it to the service center i know that it is really not working at kung ginawa nila siguradong yun na nga ang defect.

At this point i may wait for it na lang to die, following Moejun's experience  Grin then bring it to a servicing shop not the Sony Service Center.

I opened up my S301 last Saturday and this is what i found:

Closer look

Although the player is working, i decided just to bring it to LOVE Electronics in Fairview. The technician advised me just to have the player converted to 220 V which i agreed for 1.4k. At least di ko na gagamitan ng transformer. Grin

When the first Pioneer DVD player came out about a decade ago,
nagpauwi ako sa asawa ko,...
I am very aware na 110v sya,
and I was really sure na regulated ang AVR na ginagamit ko.

Oras na isaksak ko ang DVD, PFFFFFTTT..!
Umusok...! Nahiyaw ako, coz then a DVD player costs around $600...

Luckily, hindi tinamaan ang main power supply,
I ended up operating and repairing a VERY expensive DVD player then.

From then on, nagpalit na ako ng mga AVR na may daley. Kahit paano hindi bigla ang pasok ng current...

Good thing your player still works....

Good luck sir...

Love electronics converted it now to 220. At least di na ako gagamit ng transformer  Grin. Siguro guys, if you have 110 gadgets there, it is better to have them converted na lang to 220.  Wink

No, not all naman sir, just be sure that the transformer is really working,
may dahilan kung bakit mahal ang mga branded talaga na AVRs and transformers...

Good to hear that everything's ok na...

Actually I was using then a RADIOSHACK portable multivolt converter, I dont know what happened pero alam ko yun ang culprit, siguro merong pumasok na mas malakas na volt. I tested the said converter pero ngayon OK naman siya.  Smiley
