Tombstone is better than the Wyatt Earp movie, medyo boring kasi ung Wyatt Earp eh. tapos mas maganda ung pag ka dala ni Val Kilmer sa role ni Doc Holiday. Wink

Hello!

From what I've seen I doubt if the old movies will look better on Bluray as it did immensely on DVD.(imagine seeing seven samurai in VHS & LD...then seeing the digitalized version in DVD...now Bluray will only look like a badly encoded DVD, another example is Gone with the Wind)

Per my viewing of the Spiderman Trilogy and considering that the technology to clear the digital noise in Spiderman 1 was there, it still proved to have a lot of grainy artifacts ,and to think that it's a movie recently made, only Spiderman 3 was noticeably clean and of Bluray quality.

Therefore, only he new movies made within the present time frame will look good on Bluray like Avatar, otherwise, it's much better to stick with the DVD versions of Jurrasic Park, Inidiana Jones or any of the good really good Criterion titles.

Thanks for confirming this issue.

My theory is that for old movies, BD would be a big improvement if you're comparing the BD with the old SD release.  But if you're comparing the BD and the newly remastered SD of the same catalog title, the BD would still be better of course, but I guess the improvement would be only minimal.

However, I also think that BD is capable of giving us a big improvement over the remastered SD for old movies as long as the catalog title was originally shot in large-format 70mm film.

For example, the BD might be much better than the latest SD version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, since that title was filmed in 70mm.  I think I'll buy that title one of these days.  Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia might also look great on BD when they come out.

If you want to stick with SD DVD for Jurassic Park, you will have to get a remastered DVD when it comes out, because the current DVD release is really bad.

My copy of Jurassic Park looked great on CRT TV, but it now looks awful on my flat panel.

Another olddie: Sound of Music. Hopefully in future they will release this too. Smiley

As for Casablance (1942) which used 35mm, it manage to achieve 5-star PQ after the remastered superior transfer. The involved studio plays an important role too if they willing to spend time & effort to do a proper transfer.

On a separate note, the recent event of Gladiator Sapphire Series where after receiving "too many" outcries from fans, the studio finally decided to do another transfer. Hopefully, after the improvement, it will get at least 4.5-star rating similar to Braveheart. Grin

I'm waiting for a new Gladiator BD too.

I hear Casablanca is an outstanding catalog title BD, considering the limitations of the source.

On the avsforum BD tier thread, it's ranked 2.25 - Silver (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342), a very high ranking for such an old movie.

Ah, yes ... The Sound of Music is a Todd-AO 70mm, so it should come out as a terrific catalog title for BD.  Hopefully unlike Patton, also Todd-AO 70mm, but ruined by excessive DNR.

For Casablance, the studio did a grade-A remaster for the SD DVD reissue back in 2003 & later released in HD DVD. I own the HD DVD & the PQ is indeed outstanding for such an old movie. The studio did an awesome job! Shocked

I think they made an HD remaster of Casablanca even before they released the latest SD version, because they wanted to have an HD master ready for HD DVD and BD.

So when HD DVD came out, they used their HD master as source.  And when BD came out, they just cross-converted the HD DVD source to BD format.

Maybe the next remaster will be in 4K digital, like the one they did for The Godfather Trilogy.

The Casablanca BD doesn't beat Braveheart, which ranks 1 - Gold on the BD tier thread.  Expecting Casablanca to rank at Tier 0 or 1 would be asking for the impossible, I guess, but the Casablanca BD does beat a long list of much newer titles.

Quite an amazing feat by Warner's restorers.

Good thing you brought up this tittle. I totally forgotten about it. Saw this movie & like it very much but only now realize I don't even have the SD copy. Hopefully, it'll get the HD treatment in the near future. Smiley
