‘Star Wars’ Gets New Tweaks for Blu-ray Release

George Lucas has been making changes to "Star Wars" for nearly as long as it's been in existence.  When the original film was re-released in 1981, the opening text was revised to include "Episode IV: A New Hope" as a subtitle.  And he's continued to update the picture and sound in new versions of the movies, from 1997's "Special Editions" to the DVD release in 2004.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that when Lucas prepped both the original trilogy and the prequels for their debut on Blu-ray, he'd make some more adjustments to the films.  And while fans have been upset about some of the changes made in earlier revisions -- most notoriously making Greedo shoot at Han Solo first -- the new editions actually address some things true "Star Wars" geeks have complained about for years.

Further proof that George Lucas is full of it. His argument for the changes he made for the Special Edition was that special effects weren't good enough back in the day to bring his vision to life blah blah blah. Now he's mucking up lines that could easily have been dubbed in back in 1983 to "suit his vision". pfft.

I am hereby cancelling the preorder I never ordered in the first place.

I guess we'll never get the "real" Star Wars movie trilogy ever again. Thank god for the 2006 DVD release which had the unaltered, as seen in cinemas back in 1977-1983, versions.

Or did it?

I can live with the Yoda tweak and blinking Ewoks  but.....

The worst tweak for me is adding the "Noooooo" for Vader in ROTJ  Angry Angry Angry

The scene was already perfect as it is.

That scene with Vader wordlessly turning his head several times from force-lightning blasting emperor to blasted Luke is powerful. The Noooo is a no-no

It supposedly did, but it was non-anamorphic widescreen, so I passed.

I think Greedo shot first on the 2006 version.

Why can't freakin Lucas just release the original theatrical versions?  Does he really like pooping on everybody's childhood?  Angry

Yes. But not in the 1977 version which is included in the 2-DVD set.

Lucas honestly believes he is improving his films with these changes. I think he's the world's first revisionist filmmaker.

If only Lucas had like 45 minutes of additional scenes per movie similar to that of LOTR EE.

I usually don't mind the tweaks that Lucas has done with the past releases. Actually, I'm interested to see Yoda in CG for Episode I. However, Vader screaming no in ROTJ sounds really baaad.

But will still buy it. Bad packaging and all.

Ever since i watch the plinkett reviews from red letter media(if you haven't seen it you should watch ithttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI), i no longer see george lucas as great director, but more like a businessman and a hack. He is a terrible director and adding these changes in the new starwars bluray edits will add nothing but crap.

You would have thought otherwise of Lucas had you just seen American Graffitti.  Of which, interestingly, he doesn't seem to re-edit.

He's lost it . i think the rot actually started with "episode 6". *edit* thanks dencio105 spotting this.

since starwars was his best film why does he need to add all this cgi and mess everything up?
In other words hes "episode oneing" the classic trilogy

Lucas keeps saying that these changes are being made to uphold his true vision of the film. But he keeps making change after change that it's hard to see what his vision really is, if ever there was one in the first place.

The changes were already made years ago. He had the technology. Why didn't he do those changes back then? Why does he keep making them in the first place?

Because he knows he can change every scene of the original trilogy and fans will still buy them no matter how diluted the movie becomes.

He should do new movies instead- about maybe the really old jedi or Skywalker's descendants. Quinlan Vos in the comics is cool. He is a force-lightning capable jedi.

Sir do you really mean Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back or are you referring to the 5th film released, Attack of The Clones? A lot of critics and Star Wars fans consider The Empire Strikes Back as the best film in the series.

Most hardcore fans are not buying the bd release. Shame on you, George. Its good that Peter Jackson didn't tweak the LOTR bd release.

One thing's for sure. The original Star Wars trilogy we saw when we were young isn't the same one we're seeing now.

If Georgie-boy comes out with the original, unaltered trilogy as an individual set, I won't care if it's non-anamorphic. That's the one I'm getting.

But then, that potential release would undercut the sales of the altered movies. So, it'll probably never happen.

The one thing that's bugging me is, why are people getting this blu-ray? There's going to be another version with added effects and characters in about three years.

[Edited for content]

Let me see, I bought the S-VHS set  in the 90s during the special release - watched the tapes twice at least I think

Then I also bought the entire DVD collection last decade in addition to watching the 3 newer ones in the moviehouse.
