Nakabili ako taiyo yuden media code for 9 pesos each, he he! Japeyks! Meron din sila sony dvd-r and +r 30 isa i don't know kung orig talaga to. Bought one pero di ko pa natatry.

I just bought this blue generic CD-R King DVD-R since they've ran out of the gold DVD-R (which was surprisingly good!). Anyone else tried this media?

Bro SM Fairview -- they dont change DVD Rs daw because used DVD rs usually dont have easily detectable marks as compared to  a used CDRs  Roll Eyes

btw, is it really true that for AUDIO and VIDEO we should only use DVD-rs and not DVD+rs? thanks

on most players, DVD-R offers higher compatibility than DVD+R.  but i've also seen players which only accepts DVD+R (like a particular Philips player of a friend).  better check out the manual of your standalone to check which media types it accepts.

If your player was manufactured after 2001, it shouldn't have problems reading either format. Referring to the manuals isn't a reliable way of determining compatibility.

Re-posting from another thread:

The DVD Forum doesn't recognize DVD+R and +RW as legitimate formats. It's similar to the VHS/Betamax and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD conflicts. The official position of the standards body is as follows (and I quote):

"...the "+RW" format, also known as DVD+RW was neither developed nor approved by the DVD Forum. The approved recordable formats are DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM."

But this doesn't automatically mean the players aren't compatible with both standards. Since they were developing a non-standard format, the DVD+RW Alliance took pains to ensure that compatibility would be a non-issue as much as possible with standard DVD players.

From Wikipedia:

The DVD Forum created the official DVD-R(W) standards. As the licensing cost for the technology was very high, another group was founded: the DVD+RW Alliance who created a standard with lower licensing costs. At first, DVD+R(W) media were typically more expensive than DVD-R(W) media, but the prices are now very similar. Since DVD+R(W) discs are not technically DVDs as per the DVD Forum standards, they are not allowed to display the DVD logo; instead, they display an "RW" logo. However, they are readable by most DVD drives, so they are referred to as DVD+RW or DVD+R.

The "+" (plus) and "-" (dash) are similar technical standards and are partially compatible. As of 2004, both formats are equally popular, with about half of the industry supporting "+", and the other half "-". It is open to debate whether either format will push the other out of the market, or whether they will co-exist indefinitely. All DVD readers are supposed to read both formats, though real-world compatibility is around 90% for both formats, with DVD-R having the best overall compatibility in independent tests. Most new DVD writers can write both formats and carry both the RW and DVD logos.

Just bought the liteon sohw-1673s 16x dvd writer. since i am using it for backup purposes. i am sticking to branded media as long term stability is important to me. just tried the philips dvd-r 8x. bought 4 for P25 each. all burned successfully at 8x and used 99% of capacity.

@daigoro/jerix:
this Philips DVD-R 8X you mentioned, is this is the one with the FUJIFILM03 MID?  i'm asking this 'coz out of the 5 blanks i had, i only had 1 successful burn.  my burner's an LG GSA-4163B.  even my officemate's BenQ DW-1620 didn't have luck on this media.

i was hoping it might have been a bad batch, but the next batches i bought were also crap (excuse the word).  just gave it to a friend and never looked back.  sayang Sad

Hi idlewild,

That's strange. If you will remember my nero cd-dvd speed tests, I've had the best results with these disks on my LG gsa-5163 external writer, which is basically the same as the 4163. Haven't burned anything lately but will try one or two from what's remaining of the batch of 25 philips disks I bought most recently.

bro idle, i bought 10 of the philips brand -- i have only 4 remaining and those that i have used appear to be really good. I just hope that the next batch of Philips would remain as good as the ones i got now. Its 25/disk and i expect this to be at least better than the 8/disk brand. ill check the specs ur askin when i get home.

@gaol:

i remember your scans well, which is also the reason why i recommended it to an officemate who has a BenQ and also gave this media a try on my LG.  the problem is, i can't get the same performance as yours.  the only successful burn gave a PIE average of 60.25 (not bad but not what i expected)

anyway, i won't be using this media for a while.  i'll give it another try next time.

@jerix:

the one i used is also sold at P25/disc.  i'm glad it works for all of you.  i'm starting to think the problem might have to do with how these discs are handled at our local outlet since i bought mine from a spindle of 50.

Yup, that's what i tried. the philips/fujifilm dvd-r 8x. another thing you might want to do is to upgrade your firmware. i upgraded the firmware of the liteon sohw-1673s. one of the reasons for the upgrade is more compatibility with media.
saw the following information from lg's website

New firmware (ver. A105) for only GSA-4163B(Internal 16X Super multi DVD Writer)

Model:GSA-4163B
 Ver:A105
 Improvement Point
  -. Improvement of recording quality for DVD-R and DVD-RW
  -. Addition of new DVD codes
   º DVD-R: Optodisc(OPTODISCR016), Prodisc(ProdiscF02), Ritek(RITEKM16)
   º DVD+R: UME Disc(AML 002 0), DAXON(DAXON AZ3 0)
