try using dvdshrink to rip and encode video files to your HD then use Nero to burn the movie.  you can download it here: http://www.dvdshrink.org/where.html. dvdshrink is a freeware so you don't have to worry about throwing away money in case it doesn't work for you. Smiley

here's a guide to using dvdshrink: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/.

hope you find these useful. goodluck!  Cool

If I recall right, this software, as the name suggests, "shrinks" the DVD-9 data so it can fit into the more common DVD-5 blank DVD-Rs.

av_phile1 is right... it (dvdshrink) does shrink the dvd-9 media files so it would fit into the more common dvdr blank media. however, you are sacrificing the quality of the video if you're going to shrink/compress it. so if you want to preserve the video quality, use the re-author feature of dvdshrink to delete the menus or unwanted scenes and features.

Actually Ive seen rips from original DVDs to DVD-R using DVD shrink... tell you honestly it looks great! if you will be using a regular SDTV... you wont see much difference,  visual artifacts from compression are not that visible.   of course with high definition displays you might see some compression but on a regular it looks great.

Sorry for Off topic post.. but I haven't seen any Dual layer discs on sale locally..   have you bought a Dual Layer Disc?  what's it's speed and how much?  I believe if you use a Dual Layer disc, you can just DVD copy a whole dvd without using DVD Shrink...

try Nero Recode, i've been using this software for six months now and it's very good.  you can copy the whole dvd or just the movie itself minus the extras & subtitles so as not to further degrade the quality and makes your copy region-free.  it even shows you the % of compression and quality and sometimes you can get 100% and no compression for just the movie bit.  this can also burn on-the-fly meaning it reads then it writes at the same time.

it's true also, just what jpadua said, if you're viewing duplicate dvds on a HDTV set, you will notice that the picture quality is appears grainy.

if you can't get Recode, dvd-shrink+dvd-decrypter will do.

I just found out the best way to burn dvds and dvd-audio eighter to DVD9 and DVD5! Combo of ANYDVD and NERO ULTRA 6.6 using 8x RIDATA+R/-R DVD5 done in 5 seconds using LITE-ON dvd writter sohw-1653s08c.  Just  run ANYDVD and burn/copy orig DVD, nero will read it as if it has no region protection/CSS. No loss or anything. Same copy incase the orig got scratched or something. Better than using DVDDECRYPTER and DVDSHRINK.

Hey guys. Share ko lang ito. I tried using DVDFAB Gold last night and burned the movie U-571 in 1 is ti 1 ratio.  It can burn a dvd 9 dvd into 2 regular dvdrs. Then i tested it on my nextbase dvd player. WOW! Super linaw. Talagang original copy ang result. Highly recomended software. The problem is trial version lang ang gamit ko. I'll try to find its crack.

From DVD5 to DVD5, just like ADM202E mentioned.

From DVD9 to DVD5, you can use DVDshrink.
DVDshrink compresses the contents so they would fit in a single DVD5.

However, most orig DVDs are DVD9.
If you back-up a single DVD9 to a single DVD5, you are sacrificing quality.
To me this doesn't make sense kasi you already have the original - you shouldn't sacrifice quality.
So what I do is this:

DVD9 = DVD5 + DVD5

1. I use DVDDecrypter to transfer the DVD9 contents to harddisk.
2. Then I use DVDFab to process the contents into 2 discs.
3. Then I use Nero to burn the 2 discs.

Pros: Bitrate is not reduced. No compression done. Therefore, quality is the same as the original.
Cons: You are using 2 discs. Hence you will get the "Insert disc2" message at the end of disc1.

DVDFab splits the contents into 2 discs. The special features and bonuses of the movie are placed as much as possible in disc1. The first part of the movie is also placed in disc1. The remaining part of the movie is placed on disc2.

Why back-up (in case Edu Manzano is reading)? To protect the original discs from my 3year old boy. Nabasagan na ako ng disc dahil sa malikot kong anak.  Smiley

I agree with the DVD backup. Just for back up only ha.

Nice to be back here after a while.

Advice lang guys, the on of the best combo is anydvd and nero 6.6 ultra. Everything is free on the net, all you need is patience and some nice speed to download the lattest versions. DVD to harddisk backup, DVD9 to DVD5 with negligible loss, and media convertion are quick and hassle free with this combo.

I have backup my LOTR 1 to 3 extended version (12 DVDs9) to DVD5 without any problem. Media used is Ridata+R 8x for sure protection. Ok eto to protect our investments.

i have a problem burning my DVDs after ripping it.  I also used DVD Shrink at first.  When I played it in my DVD player, it read the menu, chapter search, Audio options as chapters and you cannot choose any options from those windows,  Just wait for them to play until the movie itself.  Is there anything I missed?

Also, is AnyDVD a freeware or a trialware?  What I downloaded was a 21 day trial.  Guys help...thanks in advance.

Forget about anydvd, it's nothing compared to DVD43, this is a freeware and a lot better;

It happened to me once, when I removed all non-English subtitles in DVDShrink.  Ayaw mag-select ng options sa menu. After tracing back my DVDShrink selections, I found that I should not have removed the "Unspecified" subtitles.  Iyon pala ang nagbibigay ng menu selections (In that disc, at least).  Shrink ulit, burn ulit, then OK na.

Tama si Alfie.  DVD43 and DVDShrink combination lang, OK ka na.  DVD43 is freeware, updated pa sa bagong encryption methods, ang bilis pa.
