as a rule i always say "yes"... but if you aren't confident doing it, DON'T. if the issues you are concerned with are not addressed in the new bios, why update?

i do not understand, what you mean by that, but go ahead with the firmware update! soemtiemes the media itself has a lot to do with unsuccesful burns, if you get those el cheapo types, expect some coasters! try to find out what works best with your burner and try to stick to it.

i once bought this cheap disc for 8 per and all were coasters, so i made it a point not to buy that same disc and likewise i never bought from that store again!

Sir Snapy,

Have you updated the firmware na? Will it void the warranty kahit official release to?

I also have the same exact LG DVD-RAM GSA-4167B drive and from my observation based on the different CD-R media that I've tried, if the dye on the disc is silver, then the LG would have no problems.  If the dye is of a different color, that's when the problems would begin.

I haven't upgraded the firmware yet, so when you do, please post your observations here.  I'm not thinking of upgrading the firmware yet since I really have no problems with its DVD burning capabilites (burns on any generic discs with no problems) and I have a Lite-On CD writer specifically for CD-Rs which would burn on any generic disc.

Also, if you don't have UPS, pray while updating the firmware.

basically you download one or two files... a "flasher" to flash your drives chip... and a "bin" file, which is basically your drives firmware in binary code.

it is however possible that a a vendor would provide a singular executable file.

the process varies from manufacturer to manufacturer or model to model... there are times you need to boot from a diskette... other times you can run it from a command prompt... and yet others where you just need to run the executable file.

if you plan to do this... be warned that it voids your warranty and it helps to do a THOROUGH research (specific to your drive's make and model) before you try it.  Grin

bro Spaceman Spiff -- TY for the information. Considering my insufficient background on the process i think updating the firmware of my player is very risky.  Roll Eyes

I update my firmware from 1.12 -> 1.13. Because according to the site
it will improve the ff:
- addtion of DVD?R media codes
    -> DVD+R: SONY 16x, Prodisc(R04) 16x, Optodic 8x, AML 4x
    -> DVD-R: SONY 16x, TDK 8x, MBI 16x, Prodisc 16x, Must 8x, DVSN 4x
    -> DVD-RW: OPTODISC 6x, PRINCO 4x,
  - Improvement of DVD?DL writing quality
  - Improvement of CD-R Audio playability at some CD players

Now i'm having problems with generic dvd-r. I cannot play generic dvd-r or burn to a generic dvd-r. Sad
I will try to revert to 1.12

^^ the place where you got it should have documented how to properly "flash" your drives firmware... did you get it from toshiba themselves?

acording to this... the latest firmware is TU56 (which enables you to write on -R dual layer discs): http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/pdl.asp?page=PFW&nav=RSC_PDL&model=SDR5372&ptype=DVDRECHH

i tried downloading the TU55 packgage and it contains an *.exe file... i guess you only need to double-click on the file to run it. there should be prompts to tell you what to do next.

just remember to follow the S.O.P.'S posted above before you upgrade ...  Wink
