Season 1?!?!  Man, at this price, this is something that I have to check out...  Sana kapareho ng features ng R1...   Smiley

Yes, it's season 1.  The box didn't list down the extra features though.  And don't expect the glossy gold packaging of the R1.  This one comes in a black cardboard box similar to R1 in design less the shiny trimmings.

Maybe this should mean we can expect other HBO series like Sex and the City, Band of Brothers, and Action! to be available at Astro?   Grin Of course less the glitzy cases these are known for.   Angry

Yes, I agree with Cruzsack. This is a truly amazing breakthrough series.  Read the threads on it at Film and TV Talk.

I've heard a lot of good reviews on the tv series: The Sopranos.  So, when I learned from Cruzsack that it was out in Astrovision, I grabbed a copy for myself.

Here are its specifications as stated in the box:

Disc  1 - contains Episodes 1-4
       2 - Episodes 5-8
       3 - Episodes 9-12
4 - Episode 13 plus the following special features:

* Exclusive video interview with Sopranos creator David Chase by Peter Bogdanovich
* 2 Behind-the-Scenes featurettes
* Web links and more

Also, I think that the box art of the R3 release is just the same as the R1 counterpart.  Grin

Kahon, if you're talking about the Disc 1 special feature, The Sopranos: Behind the Hit "The Godfather", yes R3 has this, too.  Grin  Disc 1 also has the Family Business Day trailer.  Grin

Helloooooo....does anyone know what a commentary is?

For everyone's benefit, it is an alternate audio track that contains the comments of one or more of the filmmakers or anyone who could have even peripherally influenced the film.

For The Sopranos Season 1 Region 1, this is an alternate audio track of the pilot episode wherein series creator David Chase and actor/director Peter Bogdanovich do a scene specific commentary.  You can access it by pressing audio on your remote when the pilot episode is playing or by choosing the commentary on option in the special features menu of the pilot episode.

Now is there a commentary on the pilot episode on The Sopranos Season 1 Region 3?

Commentary - Nope, didn't listen to it sa R1. Di ko alam meron. Undecided It didn't have subtitles either, if I remember right, which is something that I like to turn on when watching DVDs.

The Sopranos Season One R1 and R3 are NOT the same!

What's deceptive is the packaging. The R3 on sale locally has roughly the same packaging as the R1 (but with flimsier cardboard and without the ribbon marker that makes it easy to pull the box out), and what's printed on the boxes are identical. The printing on the discs themselves is also identical to the R1. But its actual special features/episode breakdowns are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the R1 version of the title.

First, R3 does not have fully animated menus, just a static image of James Gandolfini. It also doesn't have the "Previously On" and "Next On" previews, nor the text episode summaries. But R3 has a "Play All" feature, so you don't have to reach for the remote at the end of each episode. You can watch all episodes on each disc without ever moving a muscle. R3 also has English and Asian language subtitles. R1 has no subtitles at all.

After that, it's best to break down the differences disc-by-disc:

Disc One:

R1 - Episodes 1-4; Audio Commentary On "The Sopranos"; DVD-ROM links

R3 - Episodes 1-4; Featurette: The Sopranos: Behind The Hit - The Godfather (5:30); Trailer: Family Business Day (1:51)

Disc Two:

R1 - Episodes 5-8; DVD-ROM links

R3 - Episodes 5-7; Featurette: The Sopranos: Behind The Hit - The Family Man (5:15); Trailer (1:26)

Disc Three:

R1 - Episodes 9-12; DVD-ROM links

R3 - Episodes 8-10; Featurette: The Sopranos: Behind The Hit - Adventures in the Waste Management Business (5:18); Season Two Trailer (1:06)

Disc Four:

R1 - Episode 13; Series Index with Previews for ALL Season One Episodes; David Chase Interview (1:17:30); Featurette: Family Life (4:12); Featurette: Meet Tony Soprano (3:30); List of Awards; Comprehensive Cast/Crew Biographies; DVD-ROM links

R3 -  Episodes 11-13; Featurette: The Sopranos: Behind The Hit - The Tony Tapes (5:26); Featurette: The Sopranos: Behind The Hit - Oh, Poor You (5:06); The Sopranos Music Video (3:29)

The Sopranos rock. Thank God they signed until season 6 yata or 5. Basta nagextend enough reason to celebrate. I've been following this show even before the dvds or copies reached the Philippines. And I'm one hundred percent sure that they're never going to show the sopranos on HBO asia. one show that's awesome too is  "six feet down under"  they're also coming up with a first season dvd release.

They already did - for season 1 at least. Each volume had two episodes (except for the last one, which had the season finale and some extra stuff); however, only volumes 5 to 7 are still available in the stores. I've looked everywhere but can't find volumes 1 to 4.  Sad

There are R3 versions of Seasons 2 and 3 but their release dates in the Philippines haven't been finalized. Sales of Season 1 in Manila were not encouraging, probably due to the fact that Sopranos doesn't air on free TV or cable in Asia. It's a niche market basically, so demand is fairly limited for the series.

Personally, I think there were probably two reasons that would account for the poor sales of Season One:

1. It came out two whole years after the R1 boxed set, so those who actually wanted the series on DVD had bought it on R1 already; and

2. The VCDs actually came out locally BEFORE the R1 boxed set was released in the US. I was among the interested customers who ended up with a VCD set due to this fact, and really thought long and hard before subsequently buying the DVDs.

Yup, those reasons were mentioned as well. TV and cable are big factors though. From what I understand, Smallville is nearly sold out and Sex and the Cityremains a big seller despite the proliferation of R1 and pirated versions.

Anyway, I'll confirm Sopranos release dates and post them as soon as I get word from Warner.

Yikes... you mean the Sex and the City R3 DVD which looks like a pirated DVD is a big seller here? Huh Roll Eyes Grin

Anyway... got tired of waiting for the R3 release of Season 2 and ordered from Amazon.ca already... used standard shipping so I guess it will also be a long wait (para lang makatipid ng konti)... don't know how much I will be taxed though. I was charged CDN$75.47 or P2626 by Amazon.
