What are DVD-5 and DVD-9 discs? What do single layer and double layer mean?

Can we check if a disc is DVD5, DVD9 or DVD 18 using an ordinary PC DVD ROM reader? if not, what hardware do we need to find out?

Tuff,

you can check via your dvdrom. Sa windows explorer, right click on the dvdrom drive, then click on properties. Pag 4GB lang nakalagay, DVD5, pag 9GB, dvd9 siya.

have p-disc makers resorted to using the DVD9 logo even on DVD5 discs just to boost sales?  has anyone bought such mislabeled discs?

I'm not sure if they do, but you can always check, using a DVDROM...

I'm new to Pinoy, but I hope u experienced guys out there may help.

I read thru this thread and found that there are 2 ways to check if the disc is DVD5 or 9:
1. DVD5 has 1 serial # at the ring. DVD9 has 2 serial #.
2. DVD5 reports as 4GB when read on DVDROM. DVD9 reports 9GB.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the 2 points above.  
My real question is, can we tell the difference between DVD5 and 9 by just looking at the disk surface?  I heard that the DVD9 looks wavy on the surface (water like), but DVD5 is just smooth on the surface.  

Pls confirm, anyone?

Hi guys!

A few months ago I bought the DVD of soldier in astroplus, and when I opened it, I was surprised to find that the re was no label on the top of the disc.  Both sides looked like the readable side, and there was this removable plastic tag that was written in chinese, so I couldn't understand it.

I found the disc amusing - being a reltive newbie to DVDs, I first thought that you had to turn the disc over in the middle of the movie.  Anyway, can anyone explain why the disc was manufactured that way, and what that tag might mean (for anyone who also bought this ded).  I'm still intrigued...

Hi guys,

This is my first posting.  Ok to finally clear up the matter:

- most original DVDs released today are DVD9, reason is to lessen the compression and improve quality.
- most fake DVDs are DVD5, reason is to sell it at a lower price as single layer disc is cheaper but quality suffers.
- to easily distinguish quality between 5 and 9, watch the movie on your computer, preferrably on bigger monitors 17"+
- distinguishing between 5 and 9 by just looking at the discs alone is virtually impossible.
- if you want to be sure, bring a notebook when buying DVDs and look at the capacity.  DVD5 is almost 5GB and DVD9 is almost 9GB.

Has anyone noticed the "RW" insignia on most DVD+/-R disks? It certainly does not stand for ReWritable because they are not. ReWritable disks are DVD+/-RW. Anyone knows what it means?

layer transition (or the slight pause that usually occurs a little over an hour after the movie is being played) i guess is the only trade-off with the dvd9.

The DVD Forum created the official DVD-R(W) standards. As the licensing cost for the technology was very high, another group was founded: the DVD+RW Alliance who created a standard with lower licensing costs. At first, DVD+R(W) media were typically more expensive than DVD-R(W) media, but the prices are now very similar. Since DVD+R(W) discs are not technically DVDs as per the DVD Forum standards, they are not allowed to display the DVD logo; instead, they display an "RW" logo. However, they are readable by most DVD drives, so they are referred to as DVD+RW or DVD+R.

The "+" (plus) and "-" (dash) are similar technical standards and are partially compatible. Can you identify DVD5 or DVD9 by looking at the packaging?

I was amazed to have bought 3 for 600 DVD only to find out they are of low quality. I spend around 3000k (15 DVD) thinking its a bargain until i saw the pixelized screen shots.

There's no actual marking on most of the exteriors, so I'm sorry, you can't tell for sure.

But there's a rough guide on how you can tell. Please check techdude's posts on this thread. They're mostly accurate.
