Hi everyone! I'm a new member of PinoyDVD. I've heard that there are single and double layer DVDs. Is this true? What is the difference between them? How would you know if it is a single or double layer?

Double layer DVDs have approximately twice the capacity of single layer disks (DVD-9s). If I am not mistaken, single layers have silver colored coatings like your conventional CDs and VCDs (which are all single layers) while double layers are gold colored surface. Of course, iba naman yung flipper where both sides have recorded information. Hope this helps.

A single layer DVD can hold 133 minutes (4.7 GB), while a double layer can hold 242 minutes (8.5 GB) per side of the disc.

form another site's DVD FAQ:
What's the differences between DVD5 and DVD9?
When using a DVD5, just one layer at one side is used. When using a DVD9, two layers at one side are used. The DVD-laser 'reads' the second layer with data 'through' the first layer. The second layer can not contain as much data as the first layer because data is more spread out(verspreid/verdeeld). This is the reason why you just cannot double storage capacity.
When the first layer is read, the laser needs to 'refocus' on the second layer, this causes a second without data transmission. When this second is put between two scenes, you don't recognize this.

And this is the term that you might encounter in previous posts:
"layer transition"
pertaining to the very slight transition from one layer to another. Manifested as a slight freezing of video before resuming. Usually happens between video tracks to minimize discontinuity in the scenes.
Furthermore, it is interesting to note that the information on the disks is read from the inside to the outside on the first layer. Then after layer transition, the information is read from the outside going inside on the second layer

Dual Layer disc have 2 serial numbers on the inner ring. The GOLD color of the data surface that signifies dual layer is no longer applicable because some Single layer disc have Gold color in their data surface also. Single layer disc have generally Silver color data surface and a single serial number. Hope this helps.

Is it correct to assume that dual layered DVDs have better video and audio quality than the single ones? I noticed that DVDs in DTS and the ones that have lots of special features use it (i.e. dual layer). Are there any other differences that has not been mentioned yet in this thread/topic? Thanks a lot for all your replies in advance!

Duals can store more information than Singles. Now that we have that out of the way....
Dual and Single layer dvds have no DIRECT impact on the video/audio quality of the movie. However, the less compression the movie suffers, the better the quality. So, more space = less compression = better video quality.
DTS is the preferred choice for most people but the DTS format takes up a lot of space, that's another reason why most (all?) DTS dvds are dual, for better picture and to accomodate the DTS feature, same goes for the number of special features. More space means a larger accomodation of "extras".

I'd like to add to what halo said above: the MASTERING of the movie also counts a lot in determining the final video / audio quality of the dvd. If you have lousy mastering software (that digitizes the movie) then i doubt if you'll get quality superior to film transfers on betamax in the good ol' days, even if the movie is stored on DVD9.

Lemme try to answer this (but if I make mistakes, sorry na lang po kasi newbie rin ako): DVD5 I believe are the so-called "single-layered" discs. This means that only one layer of data is written on the disc. DVD5 has about 4GB of data, or more than 2 hours of video. DVD9 is the so-called "dual layered" discs. This means that two layers of data are written on the disc, separated only by a chapter switch (I think that's what its called). DVD9 has about 8GB of data, or about 4 hours of video. Pirates manufacture both type of DVDs. To distinguish what is which, most DVD9s have a sticker on the cover labeled "DVD9". Hope I got 'em right

Quality is one way of looking at their difference, Mitsurugi. Since more data can be crammed into a DVD9 than a DVD5, you always get "more bang for your buck" in terms of movie having a better quality and/or more features.
Have you heard of a DVD18? It's a double-sided, dual-layered DVD - I think. It can hold about 16GB of data, or about 8 hours.

Hi enrique13ph, wecome to PinoyDVD! When one says DVD9 in DVD terms, it doesn't mean pirated DVD. DVD9 refers to 'dual-layer' discs which can hold more data compared to DVD5 (single-layer). Now, the reason the abus fuss about these DVDs they call as 'DVD9' is because these discs generally are clearer than regular bootlegs (those discs selling at P100.00 or below) and holds more features comparable to the original counterparts. In summary, DVD9 refers to the disc itself or the medium where the data is stored. With regards to the DVD9 you were refering to, the discs per se aren't pirated, the contents are.

DVD9s double layered single sided DVDs and so have double the capacity of DVD5s (single layer single sided DVDs). So there is more space and you can cram more information into a DVD9. But it doesn't really mean that DVD5s cannot have DTS-ES and multiple angle features. It just means that there is less space to do it on a DVD5 disk and so both audio and video resolution may be compromised compared to a DVD9 disk.

Most DVD-9s are gold coated. Most DVD-5s are silver coated.
If something was erased on the BCA (Burst cutting area), it definitely is a pirated disk!
BCA - that circular portion on the disc near the center hole were information is 'printed' or burned in
