"Live long and prosper"

« on: Jul 16, 2006 at 12:23 PM »

Hello Guys,

I have been around Pinoy DVD for some time now and there are still some acronyms (whether universally used everywhere or just within this site) that I still do not know. I am suggesting that we compile a list of all acronyms used for reference purposes not just for newbies but for everyone  as well. This way everything is clear. What do you think guys?

P.S.: If there is already such a list, can anyone point me to that link? Thanks.

I think what the original poster meant was acronyms that PDVD people use, not Internet chatter and lingo in general.

ETO ANG ALAMAT NG SARS:

SARS means "Severe Audio Replacement Syndrome".

The oldest post I can find is by sir Qman, dated April 12, 2003:

"kahit ang mods madalas din tamaan ng SARS (Severe Audio Replacement Syndrome)
Nice Set up sir bently   galeng... Nagkaroon tuloy uli ako ng idea he he he eh
"

Siya na nga siguro ang nag-imbento ng acronym.

As used in pinoydvd today, SARS means an uncontrollable urge to upgrade.

Two points I need to clarify:

1. Why was SARS chosen as the acronym?

--- Because the term was coined in 2003, when everyone was deathly afraid of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak.

That's why they sometimes say that a member who can't wait to upgrade is "SARS-infected".

2.  Why does the acronym refer only to "Audio"?  Doesn't a video upgrade count?

--- Flat panel upgrades are common now, but in 2003 when the acronym was coined, members did not pay much attention to flat panels because they were too expensive.

At the time, cycles of upgrades usually focused on audio equipment only.

DVD officially means "Digital Versatile Disc".

DVD originally (but unofficially) stood for "Digital Video Disc".  But in 1995, during specs finalization, DVD officially stood for "Digital Versatile Disc", to signify that the discs can also hold audio and data, in addition to video.

The best evidence to prove that "V" stands for "Versatile" rather than "Video" is the info posted on the DVD Forum website:

BASIC DEFINITIONS

What does DVD mean?

The keyword is "versatile." Digital Versatile discs provide superb video, audio and data storage and access -- all on one disc.

Thank you for the sharing us the brief history of SARS sir Barrister.

I'm kinda weighing which to post video or versatile but chose video instead.  Grin And yeah, I  think it's more of V for Versatile than Video. Sorry naman.   Tongue

Eto pa pala iba naisip ko

Yammy - Yamaha
HD - High-definition
HD-DVD - High-Defintion Digital Versatile Disc  Grin
BD - Blu-ray Disc

I've been meaning to get an audio DVD for the longest time now just to see how the quality is. There used to be audio dvds at Astro Podium but when I came back last year they were gone.
