The leaks weren't wrong, they just weren't the whole story. A 160GB PlayStation 3 Slim is indeed coming to the US -- Europe, too -- but additionally, there's a heftier 320GB Sports Champions Move bundle. The former standalone console is available now stateside for $299, and according to the GamesCom press conference, Europeans will have to wait until October for 299 Euros. As for the biggie, which includes the game and one-player Move package, that's due out September 19th in US (or September 15th across the pond) for $399 and 349 Euros, respectively -- just in time for holiday shopping sprees.

Shock of all horrors, Gran Turismo 5 actually, finally has a launch date: November 3 (for Japan, anyhow). Of course, being more concerned with hardware as we are, our excitement is focused on the rich blue hue that will adorn PS3 consoles bundled with the grandiosely delayed racing game over in Nippon this fall. The ¥35,980 ($421) Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack will be composed of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a repainted skinny PlayStation 3 with a 160GB hard drive. Time to give your old importer buddy a call, eh?

Enjoy... Smiley

region A po ang pinas/asia, so karamihan sa mga binebenta dito region a.  pero marami rin ang region free or multi region discs.  as what sir mandy said, itanong nyo na lang po sa seller (kung sa pdvd marketplace kayo bibili).  madalang ang nagbebenta ng region b discs dito.  kung bibili kayo sa mga stores like astrovision, pwede nyo tingnan yung likod.  usually nakalagay dun kung region A lang or multi region.

goodluck!   Smiley

PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

A group of hardware hackers claim they are about to release the first product to allow gamers to play homemade and pirated games on the PlayStation 3.

The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for more than three years.

Now a group called PSJailbreak says it will release a USB dongle containing software that allows users to save games to the console's hard drive.

Sony, the maker of the PS3, declined to comment.

PSJailbreak has also not responded to interview requests by BBC News.

However, a distributor for the dongle said that he had tested it and would start selling the device "in the next two weeks".

"We are in contact with a person in Malaysia but don't know where the manufacturer is," the spokesperson for Fox-Chip told the BBC.

According to videos of the hack posted online by an Australian distributor, a user merely has to insert the USB stick into the console to make it work.

The videos show a person navigating to a "backup manager" on the PS3, which purports to show a list of games saved to the console's hard drive.

The narrator flicks through the list before loading one of the games.

Sceptics have suggested the videos are a hoax or that they show the hack running on a so-called "debug PS3" or "dev unit", used by developers to test code for the machine.

Nintendo has won various rulings against modchip distributors However, a spokesperson for Fox-Chip, another distributor based in France, denied this was the case.

"It works on all PlayStation 3s," he told BBC News. "We tested it yesterday."

A spokesperson for Console Pro, another distributor based in the Netherlands, told BBC News the "dongle converts a retail unit into a dev unit".

"Dev mode means it will run any - even unsigned - code. Using a simple backup maker or player software, you can play backed-up [saved] games without the actual disc being in the PS3."

The spokesperson for Fox-Chip said the hack was a "good thing" as it would give gamers more functionality, including the ability to run their own games, called homebrews.

"There was previously no homebrew, because it was impossible to execute [on the console] - now some people can do it," he said.

He denied that the product would just be used to pirate games and said, in the long run, its release would be good for Sony.

"Sony should sell a lot of consoles because of this," he said.

But Rik Ferguson of security firm Trend Micro warned that the hack could cause problems.

"It does disable some key security features built into the PS3 - like the running of unsigned code - and we've seen with the iPhone that this makes your device less secure."

The iPhone has been cracked several times and allows owners to run non-Apple approved applications.

Gamers have met the news of PSJailbreak with a mixed response, with some welcoming the possibility of developing their own games for the popular console.

However, many posting on PS3 forums said that the product would promote piracy and could undermine the game's industy.

Earlier this year, a US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager, George Hotz, claimed to have cracked the console.

Following his initial announcement, Sony released an update for the console disabling a function that allowed gamers to install a version of Linux on their machines, thought to have been exploited by Mr Hotz.

Many saw it as a pre-emptive strike to guard against games piracy.

Mr Hotz has never released the exploit and has said publicly that he has given up his work on the console.

The spokesperson for Console Pro said he expected a similarly swift response to the latest exploit:

"They will come with a firmware update in some days blocking the use of the dongle," he said.

PlayStation 3 update targets hardware hacks

Sony has closed a loophole that allowed users to run software that enables pirated games to be played on the PS3 console.

The update blocks the PSJailbreak and PSGroove applications.

Mathieu Hervais, one of the developers behind PSGroove, told BBC News that it was "safer not to update" if users wished to continue using the hacks.

Sony won a court order in early September banning the distribution of the PSJailbreak dongle.

The update is the latest step in Sony's ongoing battle against the commercial dongle - PS Jailbreak - that allows users to play pirated software. It also targets open source code, known as PSGroove, which allows homemade games to be played on the console.

Mixed response

It is the continuation of a cat-and-mouse game between hackers and the electronics giant, which started when PSJailbreak first appeared for sale on website.

The USB dongle was the first hardware hack of Sony's secure games console.

Sony has since obtained a court injunction preventing the distribution of the PSJailbreak dongle in Australia.

The firm has also filed a US lawsuit against Zoomba, a firm that runs a site selling the device. Distributors in the Netherlands have also told the BBC that they have received court documents banning the sale of the dongles.

However, Sony has now decided to tackle the problem head-on by releasing a software update for the consoles that block the hacks.

The new patch received a mixed reception from the gaming community, with some users praising Sony for its prompt action, while others were more critical.

"Every time there is an update, it's a security patch I don't care about," wrote one.

"Give me something that will keep me occupied like more visuals on the music player, a way to delete trophies for a game I don't have anymore, backward compatibility for PS2 games, better video chat.

"You guys don't take to many suggestions from your players. If you listen, I mean really listen, to the ideas you will be top," they added.

Mr Hervais told BBC News that it did yet know how Sony fixed the security flaw.

Sony declined to comment on the specifics of the update, but a spokesman told BBC News: "Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not be providing further commentary to this case.

"But as we always have, we will continue to take necessary actions to both hardware and software to protect the intellectual content provided on the PlayStation 3."

As far as I know, only Asian PS3 slim are sold here. It can play both region A/C bd movies (while US PS3 Slims can only play region A bd movies). As for games, PS3 has no region lock on games provided you are using HDTVs. Smiley

first question siguro is what king of tv are you using
-baka hindi supported ng tv resolution un 720p since most blurays ata play at that downscaled reso, so the tv might be 480i/p lang... just a thought  Grin

second question is what resolution did you set your ps3 on
- again, try changing your settings, best bet is to let the ps3 decide what reso is best adapted to your tv, the trick worked by pressing and holding the power button until the ps3 beeps and you see the screen prompting you to allow the ps3 to change to a reso thats adapted to your tv, try that, then play your bds, if it still doesnt work, then try playing them on a different tv, if it plays there then baka its time to visit your tech for a quick "inspection" on whats causing the blank screen while playing bd's  Sad (sana wag na umabot dun)

well, just my 2 cents ha, try it, might or might not work, pero at least you can isolate the problem if its with the ps3 or the tv  Wink

Na-set ko na yung PS3. Pero ayaw talaga. It only plays when the HDMI is not connected, so 480p resolution lang. So sa TV talaga ang topak! Thanks po!

PS3 firmware update 3.50 coming September 21, adds 3D Blu-ray support

Sony has announced the next update for the PS3. Coming two weeks after the release of system update 3.42  will be firmware update 3.50, the long-awaited update that adds 3D Blu-ray movie support to the console. (The PS3 is already compatible with 3D games.) While the date was announced for Japanese press at the Sony TGS press conference, it's likely that this will be made available worldwide simultaneously.
