Before the disk goes bad completely (cloudy, hazy on the surface), back it up to your hard disk using dvd decrypter.

I'm going to lose Joseph King of Dreams and Toy Story 2 soon...both region 1.   Angry

I also started to notice kind of like wave, island type marks on the edge of my Return of the Jedi disc, and this is a bummer. Havent check the others. Do you guys store your dvds in aircon rooms or just a regular room that is hot and humid. My return of the jedi I stored in my bedroom, aircon at night and still this happens. I would expect this to happen in hot and humid rooms wherein there will be lots of moisture. However a room that is too cold also will have moisture right? Will putting it in those plastic wraps help? What do you guys do so we can save our precious dvds. This sucks bad.. Sad

Hi bros, it would be good to note that humidity is not the only suspected culprit of DVD rot.  As defined in one of the articles DVD Rot is "picture break-up or freezing of a movie is caused by corrosion in the aluminium coating on the disk and by delamination - the separation of the layers, overstressing a disk. Delamination shows up as a stain that stops the disk from playing."  As such it was mentioned that 'Delamination' is likewise the probable culprit and is triggered by numerous factors from outright factory/ manufacturing defects up to defective DVD cases / spindle holders.

Here's also an interesting, albeit 'dated' article about this topic for your downtime reading: http://www.andraste.org/discfault/discfault.htm

PS: On the growth of fungi, it would be similar to how you treat your camera gear.  Best you have a drybox (improvised via lock&lock plus silica gels) or the real steel dryboxes from AmPro for instance (they do have a specific drybox case/rack just for CDs).  Get a hygrometer as well to measure humidity.  Ideal reading is between 40-50%.  If your moisture level goes beyond 60...hello fungi.  Wink

Ung ibang titles fogging issues (5th element both disc, the professional disc 2, ung iba natangal ko ung fog surface, kayang-kaya namang linisin basta use an anti-scratch cloth sa ACE meron nito at saka tubig lang basta ang pag punas is from the center to the edge of the disc, straight stroke not circular motion to avoid scratching the dics pero di maiiwasan magkaroon ng maliliit na scratch, basta ulit uliting punasan ung malalabong part ng disc pag bumalik na ung kinang ng surface your done! Wink , although nababasa naman ng laser ng dvd ang mga ito, kaya na force narin ako maglagay ng silica gel.

There is a product called "DVD/cd fix it" ata. I bought this in oddysey ata. The box is blue and I tried it on my jack sparrows, works ok naman. I'm scared to try this on my origs. Grin..But I think I will give it a try if I see any rot on my origs (already saw a couple). I think those "wavy island looking crap" Angry  will come off. I haven't checked my origs yet bec I have so much backlog on viewing them Grin

I understand that rots happens on the glue binding the clear (and thick) plastic layer and the reflective aluminum layer. So there is no way any DVD/cd fixit wipes can prevent this. Fixit wipes cleans the clear surface of any superficial scratches that causes skipping or unreadable sectors of the disk hence previously unplayable discs becomes playable again.

I think the best way is to make sure that the discs are properly kept in dry cabinets free from humidity to slow down the breakdown of substandard glue material in the disks.

In all honesty, mukhang daig pa ng Jack Sparrow copy ang mga originals...
I have this Assault on Precinct 13 na JS copy, na talagang halos clear na ang disc,
yet binabasa pa rin sya ng player,...  Grin

^ayus a!  might got transparent and "sticky".  Tried on 3 different players and it won't play anymore.

Saw also " signs" on my Dishwalla Live from the Flow state dvd. The sticky white blob is growing from the edge to the center ring. It still plays cause the content is small so wala siya sa edge.  Ripped it into an ISO format so I can preserve it.
