I agree, its still cheaper here. But if you are looking for DTS-ES, most of their releases are in DTS-ES. HK version is better.

They also have a HVD version of the 2 films you mentioned. Its clearer (I have seen it) and they claim its at 1080i resolution.

I'm going to Hong Kong next week (December Cool. I'm setting aside an equivalent of HK$1,000.00 almost exclusively for DVD's. I want to know of any little-known spots where I can get deals on REAL DVD's apart from the now famous HMV and whether or not to watch out for sales.

I will go back to HK for vacation early May. Will stay in YMCA. Very near to HMV. But I will still buy DVDs in Mongkok and Haiphong Road first before I shop there. Hope I can still see King Kong LE there.
Not sure anybody has mentioned about Sino Centre. It is the most popular shopping place for young one in Mongkok. It is at Nathan Road, few steps away from Dundas Street.
There are some CD shops selling music DVD (including R1, R2 and R3). Before, it was the paradise for pirated DVDs (including US, HK, Korea and Japan movies, XXX, Korean/Japan TV drama and Japan anime). Now, not anymore.
If you are into Japan music and movie, there is a DVD shop on the second floor (one floor up from ground floor) selling some second hand (or rental) Japan music CD. Also selling some movies DVD (R2 - Japan and UK), though not many choices. But there are normally with a punched hole at the spine of the DVDs, but at a lower price. I am luckily once to find Bayside shakedown 2 R2 (Int'l ed) at around HK$38. Everything is perfect except punched hole. I always go there to try my luck for my HK trip.
OT. If you are into Japan AV idols, there are shops there selling Japan AV or swimsuit idol magazines. It is on the fourth floor.

I always just go to hmv. The one in central is much better, or the one in causeway bay these are the bigger branches for me. The one in Tsim Tsa Tsui  is quite small I think. Anyway I never heard or seen Widesight, Are the prices cheaper here or more selection? Where are some of the branches. I might check it out next time.  Thanks

Prices in HMV and Hong Kong Records are usually more expensive by HK $20-30 as compared to the local DVD shops in the sidestreets.   Smiley

Widesight - along Haiphong Road ( I think - Nathan Road cor Haiphong Road is the Watsons Store - adjacent to the temple and Kowloon Park. ) From Marco Polo Hotel in Harbour City, go to Nathan Road.  Its on the middle portion after Silvercord Plaza? There is also one in night market Mongkok.

Guys, please verify.  I have been there last Dec. pa.

Thanks.

hello, Anybody have experience bringing in dvd players or others? Im thinking of bringing in a PS3 if the price is really low there. Last I heard the 60 gig is at 28 thou vs. 35 to 37 thou here. Im just looking at  the 20 gig if its 15 thou I would probably get it.

Also is customs stricter in Naia one vs Naia 2? I always take PAL and customs there is ok naman (for dvds), no problems so far for me (sweating profusely). However now if ever, im thinking of bringing in elec equip like oppo 981 or Ps3. Im going Naia 1 now. Hmmm parang kasi russian roulette  yun mga customs dito eh..hehe..

Thanks

Just an update. I was in Hong Kong last week and was surprised that the dvd stores in haiphong road are gone. i always pass by that road going to and from the hotel so it used to be so enjoyable browsing through the dvd shops. the hmv store in peking road is also gone. it is now a big adidas store. it is now along lock road, nearer to haiphong road.

Grr... I should've read this thread before leaving for holiday, so I wouldn't have been shocked to see the Adidas store and maybe could've found the HMV mentioned.

Widesight stores in hongkong are quite hard to find since their stores are quite small only and are located in side streets.  Their pricing is lower compared to HMV.  Browsing the DVDs is easier compared to local stores here in our country since they grouped the titles alphabetically.  Selections for hard to find DVDs are not too many as compared to HMV.  As for HD titles, limited lang yung titles nila.  Bought a Spiderman Bluray Boxset for more than P2500 only.

Yung HMV sa central near Landmark is quite big with big selections of DVDs including hard to find titles.  You will need to spend time in browsing for titles kasi and daming selections arranged also in alphabetical.  Boxed sets and TV series are in a different area with their own shelves kaya you won't have a hard time browsing them also. Bluray and HD formats also available.

Hope this helps.

Just come back from Hong Kong.
In Sino centre in Mongkok, I notice that there are several DVD shops in the basement and one shop of M/F. They are selling Japanese edition DVDs very cheap. Mostly between HK$18 to HK$38. Though not the latest movies. You can easily buy the type of X-men, King Kong, Terminator 2, the days after tomorrow etc. They are brand new, not second-handed, no punched hole.  As I start collecting blu-ray disc, I don't buy much DVD. Just buy the following Japan movies Special edition DVD. In fact, choice of Japan movies are limited.

Ooku Movie (2 Discs Wooden box edition) HK$68
Umizaru: Limit of Love (4 Discs Premium edition) HK$38
Dororo (4 Discs collector's edition) HK$98
Death Note Complete set (3 DVD + 1CD, including Part 1 and 2) HK$20

The last two seem has no English subtitle based on the label. Just buy it for collection is nice for such price.
Kill bill Part 2 box set costs only HK$150, but my travelling bag has no space any more.

Give it a visit when you go to HK. You won't be disappointed. You all know Japan DVDs have high standard. Not like D5 local cheap version. Grin

Went months ago. DVD selections were OK, including box sets of Cosmos and Civilisation, but the Decca classical music box sets were a bargain!

Mahal sa HK.  Plus, iba pa ang region.

I would suggest you buy BD's from resellers here instead.
