Totally agree with Core2Duo, handles Vista so well, make rendering much easier, however, if you plan to stick it out with XP, and be discriminating of the softwares you'll install, the dual core are a lot cheaper nowadays, and can perform and render as well (maybe as long as you have not shifted to the resource hungry Vista) Wink.
BTW.......to maximize your C2D potential, one should get a very good Video card. Wink

.... and beef up a lot of memory..... 1gig will do but it will definitely bitin specially in high end games and if you're running on vista ultimate edition..... 2 gig memory is sufficient for gaming rig. Mine is 3 gig, 1 gig per slot. CNC3 and Company of Heroes are flawlessly running under E6300 C2D.

In 3D renderings, w/ same amount of memory(2GB) my E6400 is 3X to 4X faster than my Athlon64 3200 . . . amazing!

Quads are now available and cost more than twice. Q6600 is P27,5K  Intel mobo is P10,8K . . . argh.

I'm using a 2.8GHz Pentium-D, 800MHz FSB, 2MB cache.  It's a dual core processor.  I was thinking about upgrading CPU, but my computer runs good.  I put it thru a lot more multitasking than the average user, downloading torrents, converting videos, and burning disks with no problems at the same time.  The difference I can see when comparing equal speed CPU's Pentium D, to Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, Dual Core Extreme are the FSB (Front Side Bus) and cache.  My previous MoBo only had an 800MHz FSB so the Pentium-D was a good choice for me.  My new MoBo has a 1333MHz front side bus, so if I was to upgrade I'd choose a Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, or Dual Core Extreme with a 1333MHz front side bus.  Someone suggest to me to get a slower Dual Core CPU, because Pentium-D sucks.  Clearly he had little clue as to what he was talking about.  If you're MoBo only has an 800MHz front side bus, compare the prices of the fastest Pentium-D you can find to the prices of an equivalent speed Dual Core or Core 2 Duo CPU.  Granted it might have a little more cache, but is the price difference worth it?

Compare:
Pentium-D 925 or 930
3.0GHz
800MHz FSB
4MB Cache

Core 2 Duo E8400
3.0GHz
1333MHz FSB
6MB Cache

The Pentium-D should be much cheaper than the Core 2 Duo.  I'm guessing about 3,000 pesos more.  How would you know which one performes better?  Clearly they runs at the same clock speed.  Does the FSB and extra 2MB of Cache make it better?  Most likely yes, but is it worth the extra money for that slight bit of improvement.  If I where to upgrade, I'd personally consider the Pentium-D 950 3.4Ghz.

My Pentium D 3.0Ghz Dell Dimension 9100 CANNOT handle 1080p mkvs.    Tested close to 100 1080p titles already.  Nothing plays smoothly.  Nothing.

My Core 2 Duo E6600 Gateway CAN play anything including 15GB, 11MB/sec and higher bitrate 1080p files.

That's the biggest difference between them.   All other applications are just fine.   So if a user only plays Divx, avi, VOB, ISO or 720p, you'll have no problem with Pentium-D.  But for 1080ps - totally hopeless.    Talo pa ng NMT.

Despite the slower clock speed, the C2D is way way more efficient than Pentium-D when given the hardest tasks possible.

Configuration
Dell Dimension 9100
Pentium D 3.0Ghz
ATI HD3870
4GB RAM
XP Pro

Gateway
C2D E6600
ATI HD4850
4GB RAM
Vista Home Premium
