Guys,

Which HD DVD player provides coaxial and optical digital output? Is there any out in the market already? Toshiba? Samsung?

Thanks!

All Toshiba HD DVD players have optical digital output but only certain models have both optical digital & coaxial output.

Currently, I believe the 2nd gen only the HD-XA2 has both optical digital output & coaxial. All 3rd gen players are without coaxial. Not sure about the first gen players tho. You can verify this by checking the models at Amazon.

*Edited post. My mind kept thinking of analog connection. Grin

If my memory serves me right, my old XA1 have both coaxial and optical out, only the XA2 and Onkyo HD805 have both coaxial and optical out. Not even the HDA35 have these connections.

An optical cable transmits the signal as pulses of light, while a coaxial one passes the signal as pulses of electricity. The question is whether the difference between the two is audible. Neither type of connection is inferior as both are equally suited for multi-channel digital audio connection.

thanks sir pchin!

i checked the toshiba hd site but they do not show the rear panel of their units. my concern is that my avr (yamaha rxv 2095) may not be able to accomodate an addtional toslink input. i am already using two, one for my ps3 and the other for a pioneer dvd. the coaxial input serves the cd player naman. anyway thanks again...

these hd thingy is driving me nuts..... Grin

Maybe you can consider to upgrade your AVR to a HDMI AVR...all problems solved. Grin

M just wondering why they use the optical rather than the coaxial... coaxial cable is cheaper than the optical and i cant even find a 5m length.  Roll Eyes for customer convenience Toshiba should have thought of placing both.  Wink

After getting frustrated to set up the PS3 to get on line, i set up my XA2 yesterday. Upgrade the firmware to 2.7. used it on a Denon3805 AVR receiver and set the audio out to pcm. I noticed that the sound coming out is softer than when it is set in bitstream. Can anyone comment on this. Thanks!

If you are using a coax or optical out, always set it to Bitstream. PCM output only works w/ HDMI.
