They might start to consider that when the sales of LCD and Plasma TVs have reached critical mass. Going digital, more so HD, requires a new set of broadcasting equipment. They might as well start from scratch.

Akala ko nung una requirement sa States eh by 2009 naka HD broadcast na. Pero digital broadcasting lang daw which doesn't necessarily mean HD broadcast?

yup, the requirement is for digital broadcasts, not necessarily HD i think in the Philippines there's also a similar move. but knowing the country, they'd set a deadline and when its near they'll keep pushing it back until everyone forgets about it. from what i recall, its 2010 for digital broadcasts in the Philippines. so you can watch Wowowee in digital TV and clearly see how they screw their contestants

Tentatively 2010 is the target...yes, agree it might be pushed back. I won't be surprised it will be in 2020...

read in the papers recently that the date was pushed back by the ntc to 2015, but i think there is a problem, they are adopting an open policy to which kind of standard to implement, which means if abs-cbn decided to adopt atsc (u.s. technology) and gma decided with isdb (japan tech) and there is even a european standard called dvb. we have to buy all these tuners to watch these broadcasts. its a good think the networks themselves are against what the government wants to implement and they are telling the government to make a stand and choose a standard so that they as networks will know which technology to invest in. thats why i think even the 2015 deadline is an impossibility at the rate they are going. sayang.

That's just not right. I didn't spend hard earned money for an LCD just for me to watch these shows. Waste of time!

I read in an article last year that ABS-CBN will be introducing digital TV in the Philippines. Based on what one of the reps of ABS CBN said, test broadcasts of digital TV were made in Pampanga & Bulacan and that test broadcasts will soon be made in Metro Manila. Am not so sure that such tests were indeed conducted in the areas he mentioned. Any pdvd members here from San Fernando, Pampanga or San Miguel, Bulacan who can authentic this? How soon? Well, that's a big question mark? Will have to agree with you guys that digital TV is still far from being available in the near future. Say 10 to 15 years from now, maybe...... With so many Pinoys enjoying Wilie & Kris (yuck!) on standard broadcast, I don't think they would be interested in paying a premium to watch those shows ...... considering the price of LCD's and Plasmas, plus the cost of the decoder box. Although prices of LCD's & plasmas have dropped these days, the prices are still a bit steep vis-a-vis CRTs.

Too many pretty girls will distract our attention in that show. Actually, baligtad. Some of the pretty girls we know on TV or screen reveal their skin imperfections on HD and suddenly become yucky. Every pimple, lines or craters will be revealed. That's actually the concern of the porn industry. When they went HD, they had to hire new models with perfect skin. And they had to put make-up on those body parts as well. With so many Pinoys enjoying Wilie & Kris (yuck!) on standard broadcast, I don't think they would be interested in paying a premium to watch those shows ......
And HD broadcast of that show on a 42" HD display will only reveal the wrinkles in Kris's face and the craters in Revillame's cheeks. Hopefully by the time HD broadcast comes around, we'll have better show hosts and better programs than what we have today. And hopefully that would happen within my lifetime.

Sports in HD...thats my only interest.......imagine watching boxing matches in HD, NBA games in HD.....and golf majors in HD...whew Im salivating.... pero bago magkaroon ng HD broadcast sa atin, baka retired na si Pacquiao. Kobe Bryant already has his 6th ring, and is considered over the hill na. And Tiger already surpassed Nicklaus's 18 majors.....

Cable-quality broadcast is such a joke. They reduce the resolution and the bitrate to jam in more channels in the same amount of copper. If anyone's interested here is the Wikipedia entry for digital TV roll out in the Philippines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_digital_television_deployments_by_country#PhilippinesAnalogue is mandated to be phased out in 2015 http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=55179The 2015 date isn't that fantastical based on how the price of LCD or Plasma TVs have been dropping. A simple search on PinoyDVD would yield 32-inch LCD TVs going for 50-60T and the same size today would cost 25-30T, which is roughly a 50% drop. It wouldn't be too far fetch to find brand new 32-inch LCD TVs by 2015 going for 5-10T even if you account for a worse forex and inflation. The only reason LCD and plasmas cost so much is because of the bad yield manufacturers have been experiencing but with mass production and competition we can expect it rival CRT TVs.

All-digital TV? Please stand byMillions lack the necessary gear and risk blank screens when the switch occurs. Obama seeks a postponement. By Jim Puzzanghera and Christi Parsons January 9, 2009 Reporting from Washington -- The transition to digital television next month has been hailed as the biggest advance in over-the-air TV since the advent of color, but it's shaping up as a black eye for the government and risks leaving millions of viewers without a picture. On Thursday, President-elect Barack Obama asked Congress to postpone the federally mandated switch to all-digital broadcast television, called DTV, scheduled to take place Feb. 17. The unspecified delay would give the government time to fix a consumer-help program that ran out of money this week. But it also would set back the long-promised benefits of digital TV, which offers sharper pictures and more free channels while opening valuable airwaves for public safety and wireless Internet access. http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-fi-dtv9-2009jan09,0,7438860.storyEditorial: Nation's not ready, so delay digital TVCoupon waiting list is a signal of trouble ahead in transition. Last update: January 10, 2009 - 7:37 PMThe long-planned shift from analog to digital TV, scheduled for Feb. 17, has been a troubled transition. Not enough households are ready, and now there's a waiting list for coupons for converter boxes some will need to upgrade to a digital signal. While TV doesn't and shouldn't have the same importance of fixing the financial mess and fighting two wars, Congress should heed this week's call from President-elect Barack Obama to delay the digital switch. http://www.startribune.com/opinion/editorials/37367194.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUjc7YUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

Hundreds of US television stations cut analog signals
NEW YORK (AP) - About a quarter of US TV stations cut off their analog signals Tuesday, causing sets to go dark in households that were not prepared for digital television despite two years of warnings about the transition.
Though most viewers were ready — and people with cable or satellite service were unaffected — some stations and call centers reported a steady stream of questions from frustrated callers. Many wondered how to get coupons for converter boxes that translate digital signals for older TVs — or how to get the devices working.and so it has come to pass...
