« on: Nov 11, 2002 at 03:49 AM »

Got a buzz that director Mike de Leon is doing some film restoration efforts on "Kisapmata" ('In Just the Wink of an Eye') and "Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag" ('Manila in the Claws of Light' - a Brocka film which he help produce) for DVD pressing.

What's yet to be known is if these DVDs are just for his personal film archive or for commercial release.  I do hope that these films get to be available even in Limited Edition.

Hope we get more updates. Smiley

Here's an quote from director Quark Henares (Gamitan) regarding the upcoming Mike de Leon DVDs:

To mike de leon fans, i know maynila: sa kuko ng liwanag and kisapmata are being restored for a limited edition collectors boxed-set that might be released only through mail. i'll update you as they come Smiley

COOL, isn't it? Cool  Better start saving up guys 'cause the future looks promising for Tagalog DVDs. Smiley

wow! this is great, especially for people like me who have limited knowledge on his brilliant contibution to Filipino cinema. i was able to catch the rather short-lived run of Bayaning Third World in theaters and i was mesmerized by his style of filmmaking.

hope this really pushes through...

Great! Do you have any idea when? Grin

Any idea what other “film titles” are in the works for DVD release from Mike De Leon?

Thanks!

Have been searching far and wide for videos or DVDs of films by Mike De Leon and other Filipino great directors (lino brocka, ishmael bernal, mario o hara, etc.)  I may have sent hundreds of emails over the past year to all possible on-line sources of classic filipino films including UP film center, to no avail.  i came upon your chat line and this particular subject of mike deleon.   please include me in your list in notifying where i can purchase mike de leon's films.  one of my want list is also "Itim" which I think was also directed by Mike De Leon.  here is one classic, fine and superb filipino ghost story.  below is my want list of classic filipino films.  would appreciate referral to proper source to acquire these films.

1.  Scorpio Nights  (Peque Gallaga, 1985)
2.  Init sa Magdamag  ( Laurice Guillen, 1983)
3.  Pagdating sa Dulo  ( Ishmael Bernal, 1972)
4.  Bagong Bayani  ( Tikoy Aguiluz, 1995)
5.    Babae sa Bubungang Lata  (Mario O'Hara, 1998)
6.    Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag-itim ng Tagak  (Celso Ad. Castillo, 1978)
7.    Manila By Night  (Ishmael Bernal, 1980)
8.    Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag  (Lino Brocka, 1975)
9.    Bagong Hari  ( Mario O'Hara, 1986)
10.    Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang  (Lino Brocka, 1974)
11.    Kisapmata  ( Mike De Leon, 1982)
12.    Insiang  (Lino Brocka, 1976)
13.    Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos  ( Mario O'Hara, 1976)
14.  Itim (I think by Mike De Leon)
15.  Oro Plata mata (Peque Gallaga)

......till then.

Hi True Talent, welcome to pinoyDVD! Smiley

Most of the titles you've mentioned are not yet available on DVD except for one:  'Scorpio Nights' has just been recently released by Regal Films (U.S.)  Check out the " Complete List Of Pinoy Movies on DVD " to see the other titles available.

Got a buzz that director Mike de Leon is doing some film restoration efforts ... for DVD pressing.

What's yet to be known is if these DVDs are just for his personal film archive or for commercial release...

from the few scenes i saw while checking my BATCH '81 vcd for playback problems, this copy doesn't look like it has undergone restoration, by mike or by anybody else.  since the vcd was released by viva, it  might be that it was based on their copy of BATCH '81 that is shown on the viva channel. but that's just a hunch.

it's been awhile since this thread started to whet our appetite.  does anyone have any update on mike's rumored restoration work for dvd?

If the promotional preview trailer that I saw was true-- and I sure hope that it was--Maynila sa Kuko will be part of a 4 disc DVD boxed set along with other classics from, if I remember correctly, Lamberto Avellana and Gerry de Leon. Shocked It's "coming soon" daw. How soon?     Well... lets just cross our fingers.

Anyway, they showed short snippets from the  films that are supposed to be included and they looked and sounded pretty clear. Again, lets cross our fingers...

Manuel Silos directed "Biyaya ng Lupa" (1959) which won top honors at 1960 Asian Film Festival.

Why couldn't they make room for an Ishmael Bernal movie? Well, that's a good start...

The included films, I believe, are owned by LVN. Maynila was produced by Mike de Leon's outfit.

Hi! I'm so glad I found this board. I've been wanting to have a copy of Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag, and have been looking everywhere--pero walang nangyari. I hope the DVD set will be out soon.

I'm sure some of you know this already (since it's old news), but isn't it such a great honor that a Lino Brocka film was not only included in the 150 best films of the 20th century (from Film: The Critics Choice, edited by Geoff Andrew)--it was also included in a major critic's personal best list (from Century of Films: Derek Malcolm's Personal Best, by Derek Malcolm)? It surely is.

Ok, here are excerpts from his e-mail:

the truth is i am all alone in this undertaking but i have certainly not given up.
the story behind this dvd thing is a long and complicated one, worthy of a feature, so i wont go into that. recently, less than a month ago, i tried something with kabayancentral.com, and if you have the time to look, i have put up titles (on vhs) that may possibly find a market there. the result is quite surprising, in spite of the disclaimer that the films are relatively unrestored. i did all of the work, including the writing (so please be kind with your comments), the restoration of the photos (because i think these films should be reintroduced, and therefore given a fair chance, they just cannot be released cold). Considering that they sell for $24.95 each. i think vcd or dvd may not be a remote possibility.

So, I guess, if we want to see Maynila sa Kuko on DVD, we have to somehow support him in one way or the other.

Thanks RMN.

To help spread the word about the VHS version available at Kabayan Central, click the url below. There's some pictures of Bembol and Hilda posted. Should we buy the video now or wait for the DVD?  Smiley
