I wouldnt do a blindbuy.   The ratings, particularly from highdefdigest, are my guide.  From there, I base my buying decision, whether a particular title is worth my $20+ or not.

PURE movies - even the so-called masterpieces from Spielberg or whoever - easily reaches an owner's boredom threshold. There are very very few titles that could stand immersive repeated viewing. In my experience the only titles I could return for the 50th time - presumably - would be WIZARD OF OZ, TEN COMMANDMENTS, SOUND OF MUSIC, MARTY, GOOD NEWS (1949), ROBIN HOOD, SINGING IN THE RAIN, among others. But music DVDs/Blu Ray is different. Concert films is the very category that you won't ever regret paying for a princely sum because in most cases they won't get "tired" easily. You would likely watch your favorite concert for 15th time and draw visual & sonic delights everytime. I knew it because I return to titles like JAMES TAYLOR LIVE AT THE BEACON, AVERAGE WHITE BAND, CHARLOTTE CHURCH, ENNIO MORRICONE, WET WET WET IN GLASGOW, BARRY MANILOW LIVE, among the others - at a rate of at least once in every quarter. Whereas I hardly remember HOUSE OF SAND & FOG or REMAINS OF THE DAY. But those concerts are not yet on Blu Ray - hence if you'd take the paltry titles on hand on the format, I suggest you take MARIAH CAREY CONCERT EMANCIPATION, even if you're repulsed by her overblown repertoire, this Blu Ray ably demonstrates sonically her freakish five-octave range and delivers how a concert ought to appear in high-definition. In another category, take also PLANET EARTH plus GANGES (highlights the alien & totally mystifying Hindu culture).

Maganda ang Kung Fu Hustle movie, pero hindi raw maganda ang BD quality.

« Reply #20 on: Sep 09, 2010 at 11:24 PM »

It really depends on what you like.  Most movies will benefit from Bluray's high PQ and SQ, but some like Baraka on Bluray is like night and day when compared to the DVD.  The added details just makes it feels like you are seeing it for the first time.   I remember a time when I believed that animated fare will not benefit much from Bluray, but seeing Pinocchio on Bluray is stunning, the backdrops looks painted (It probably is)  On DVD, it is muted and less evident.

O usually go to DVDbeaver to find if a movie P/AQ  is markedly improved on Bluray, then decide if the improvement is worth upgrading...

I have this.  BD quality is very good - PQ and SQ.  I'm very happy with it.  Madaming scenes na malupet ang hi-def in terms of detail :  My favorite is the night time scene with the musical assassins.  Yes, it's like watching a new movie again because of new details and colors present ( versus the SD ).  Buy this if you love this movie!

=========

And as for BDs you want to buy, you can't go wrong with movies you love. If they are already in hi-def, buy them!  You may want to check out reviews but use them as a guide only for the technical specs.  As for me, the very first BDs I bought were the ones that I don't mind watching over and over - SPEED, MATRIX & KUNG FU PANDA to name a few...
