Sources within Warner Home Video Philippines confirmed that plans were afoot to start selling Blu-ray discs before the end of the year. They expect to bring in nearly 300 titles eventually with prices for catalog releases hovering around the Php800 level.
This will likely include New Line Cinema films which will now be distributed by Warner's local office effective December 2008.

Does this mean that Warner Philippines will just be importing Bds from the US & just have them repacked here?

Wow excellent news - PhP 800 I hope the build quality is solid though. Cause if Amazon continues to run its slash-down promos on BD & HDDVD discs, things would roughly end up at par in terms of net costs. With the 30-50% off price discounts on Amazon, a BD disc may have a net cost of around $15 let's say on average. If you use JAC to get it here, we have to add around $1.50 per disc (rate: $6/lb) plus if you order 4 discs minimum - add $1.25 per disc ($5 flat rate/shipment) for handling. That would total an ave of $17.75 per disc. Using a buffered $45 forex, that would run to around PhP 798.75... Almost bang-on the prospective local Warner titles. Caveat: Quick pencil pushing lang to mga sir, of course there would be other variables ranging from individual disc prices to how big or small your shipments would be. Well one definite upside of doing it locally would be FASTER leadtimes. No need to wait around two weeks to get your hands on the BD babies.

There are quite a number of ps3 owners. With this price point, it wil certainly encourage some consumers 2 try out bd movies. Due to the low bd price some movie fans will also upgrade to hd...thus ps3 sales will go up since currently its d cheapest bd player in d market..

I hope that this price will not only be for those old or unknown titles but also for those new and famous titles.

I hope that this price will not only be for those old or unknown titles but also for those new and famous titles. True...however, I don't mind those old but popular titles. There are still many great catalog titles which consider 'big guns' stil yet to be released. At least this nice news/announcement is a good start

Agreed. another upside would be the chance to skim thru several titles, just like what I usually do with dvds before purchasing.

True, true... and this may just convince HD fence sitters (like me) to take the Blu-ray plunge. Fyi, Warner clarified that this price point is for catalog titles. New releases will be more in line with list prices abroad but hopefully those will be much lower than what we're seeing in local stores today.

Hmmmm, I think you will no longer be in the "sidelines" anymore with prices of BDs now at "reasonable" levels. hehehe. Anyways, just consider BDs as additions to your already impressive DVD collection.

As per Warner, the BDs that will retail here will all be imported - same as their DVD releases. They're the only distributor now that still imports everything.

Even if new releases are same as the US list prices, it's still cheaper to buy locally as we could save "huge" shipping costs.

"Cheap sale" is in our blood na Example lang dto: With the same amount of budget instead of getting 10 BDs (tru import), now we could get 14 BDs locally....same amount spent but getting more BDs. Tama ba?
