Howdy Ho!

« on: Jul 03, 2008 at 12:51 AM »

Okay, something scary is happening in my home.

A few months ago, I took advantage of Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day, and purchased Angel: The Complete Series at 60% off SRP.

This week, I decided to finally watch this original, R1 set.

Last night, in the middle of Season One, Disc 3... my Pioneer DVR-514H died. It just broke down. The player suddenly ejected the disc (in the middle of an episode), and now cannot read any discs I try to load into it - all register as "Unreadable." This machine is only one year old! Just a week past its warranty - I looked for the receipt in hopes of getting it fixed under warranty.

Anyway, I resumed watching the DVD set in our guest room, on a 5 year old Next Base player. Just now, while playing Season One, Disc 4... the player again stopped in the middle of an episode, and for about 15 minutes, the machine could not eject the disc. It would just reload the disc without ejecting the tray, and register the disc as "Unreadable." AGAIN. I finally got to eject the disc, and now the Next Base refuses to play any DVDs.  Shocked

I'm now scared to resume watching this DVD in my bedroom. What if this evil boxed set kills another DVD player in my house??? I already lost use of one DVR... I can't risk losing my old Pioneer DVR-510H to this murderous boxed set! Gitna pa naman ng Wimbledon...

It's a serial killer set that stalks DVD players! I think I got the Angelus boxed set instead of the Angel boxed set.  Grin

=====

Seriously though - weird. Two players busted in two days! Could the set have been on sale due to a defect that's harmful to players?

medyo creepy nga. lalo na ngayon na sa gabi ko pa binabasa.

like what static said, try playing on a dvd-drive in a computer. better yet, if you know how to rip/convert them to divx, that would be a good alternative to preserve those demonic possessed dvds.

happy halloween.   Grin

That's what I thought so, too. But then again strange things do happen, both naturally and supernaturally. By the way, it reminds me of someone here regarding your subject thread, Mr. Hankey. Lips sealed

Maybe.  Hard to say, there are many 50-60% deals at Amazon.  And no complaints so far from other buyers, so it could be just your set...  what coincidence nga lang, on a title like that...Angel (of Darkness?).

Try reading the disc on a PC (with DVD43, since it's region 1), if it takes a long time for Windows Explorer to register the disc, then it's the disc.  If not, you might want to try inserting 'The Exorcist' into your DVD player...

Yeah, there was an issue with the Dawson's Creek R2 Complete Series. Amazon-UK was selling it at 80% off, then if you read the reader's comments, so many say they have difficulty playing every other disc. Those that got their defective sets replaced mostly also got defective sets again! That's foul, though - selling it at 80% off instead of pulling it from your catalog. But for others, the sets worked fine. Must be different batches.

well, if it's any consolation, my pioneer amp also broke down for no apparent reason.  it's on permanent stand by and would not turn on. this same week.

still, as scully would say, there's got to be a logical explanation.

Oh...sounds scarry. I hope it's not some sort of virus that can affect/damage dvd players. Undecided

In the case of both your players, were you in an airconditioned room?

Yes.

I'm afraid of what will happen if I do! The cycle might go on endlessly. I have a theory already: My Angel DVD Boxed Set is probably the cousin of the videotape featured in The Ring. Buti na lang yung akin, DVD player lang ang pinapatay...  Grin

I was watching Transformers the other week when my DVD player froze then shut down right on the scene where the Sector 7 agent was just about to tell the Secretary of State about Megatron.

I know! Creepy  :'(

I'm really scared right now.

Since I didn't want to risk my other DVR, I decided to continue watching this set on a brand new generic "Maxwell" DVD player that I won in a raffle last Christmas and had in storage. I watched a couple of minutes of an episode from Season One, Disc 4 last night, got bored, shut off the machine with the disc inside, then went to bed.

As I have no surgeries scheduled for today, I decided to continue the disc where I left off. I turned on the player using my remote, then after about 1 minute of mechanical noises coming from the player, got an alert on my TV screen:

"NO DISC"  Shocked

EVIL!!! THIS SET IS EVIL!!!  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

So I ejected the disc and loaded it again. It worked fine this time. Still...  Grin

ETA: Now that I'm watching the disc again, the episode this player just temporarily stalled on is about: possession and exorcism! I'm suddenly scared again...
