i was just wondering is there any difference in picture quality when playing a dvd on a ps3 as compared to playing it on an upscaling dvd player? which one is better and why?

i think based sa mga merong ps3, its not a bad upscaler at all, they think it can give the dv 600 a run for its money. sa oppo siguro talo ang ps3. and reason why people don't highlight ps3 as an upscaler:

1. it's region lock for dvd (depends where your ps3 comes from)
2. they don't want to abuse the ps3's lens. (with 5k worth for repair, better get an upscaler)

yup the PS3 upscales in the level of Pio 600. if ever may difference not very much. Kaya lang if i were you i would buy a separate DVD upscaler. Sayang naman ang PS3 lens kung DVD lang ang play mo. Again just a suggestion  Wink

malayo sir. iba talaga pag hd.  Wink sa shoot-out, even with the pioneer already passing through a dvdo iscan video processor (which will trump any stand alone dvd upscaler), layo parin compared to bluray, if i remember right 5 poin scale kami sa scoring 5 being the highest, the bd got a score of 4.++ while the pio is more or less a point behind. and this was more than 20 enthusiasts scoring.

its hard to go back to sd once you have seen hd.  Wink

Wala po sir  Sad  You can only buy legit HD blu ray from select stores or import it from Amazon. Smiley Most HD adopters purchase them this way.

wala pa, as far as i know. either you buy from the marketplace. or you get it through amazon. i suggest if you go bd, bili ka muna mga used bds, usually mga 1k sya pag bago kasi 1.2-1.5k rin minsan yung mga not so blockbuster na movies you can get it for 800 pesos pre-owned.

kahit 32" i think you will see the difference, basta mga 6-8ft ang viewing distance, further than that baka wala na. iba ang crispness ng bd. mas clean and less noise ang pq.

aside from price? siguro availability ng stocks and much more choices. but if its the movie and disc itself. pq, sq, special features, lamang lahat bd.

most of the bds now are in 2.35:1 screen (same as cinema screen), so if you play it sa 16:9 na screens ng panel's natin, there will still be black bars sa top and bottom, but not annoying naman. afaik, wala ng mga supersuper bit, kasi 1080p na lahat. may difference lang sa audio, mostly dolby digital and dts (given) then some with dolby digital plus and the newer bds have truhd and dts-ma (which are lossless), sa features may pagkakaiba, the new bd-live feature can let your player go online to get more features. but depends on your player kung may bd-live (old bd players wala nito, so if you buy a disc with this feature, you can't use it). the ps3 is bd live capable already (basta you are on the latest firmware).

question lang mga sir, how would you know that the video you are watching is being UPSCALED? Provided that your output is set at HDMI 720p or 1080p?

Sabi kasi ang popcorn nag-uupscale, output ko HDMI 1080p. Pero noticeable difference kasi andun pa rin ang jagged edges pag hindi HD ang played format.

Honestly, to see the full benefit of viewing 1080p Blu-ray, you have to sit around 4 feet from your 32 inch display.

the chart below is a very good guide

I bought my first BD movie "Speed Racer"  and nagulat talaga ako sa quality, halatang halata ang difference nya sa DVD, I think the movie is also a good basis since it has lots and lots of vibrant colors and really defined and itsura ng mga characters.

My first freebie BD was the MGS4 bonus disc from its limited edition, kahit bonus content lang sya sobrang linaw na talaga...I used to collect original DVD's but now kahit mas mahal BD Ill never go back na

There are no pirated BD yet, those what we see are BD transfers compressed to DVD9's so far ok naman quality nya pero uncomparable pa rin sa mga BD talaga

Matagal nang merong fake BD, sir.  Sometime in June this year lumabas, made in Hong Kong.  Very rare, around P700 each.  (BD to DVD-9 transcodes are only P60 each.)

I won't be able to discuss in greater detail.  Bawal kasi e.  Locked thread: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=80411.msg819789#msg819789

Sa Shanghai, equivalent of 250 Pesos daw sabi ng PinoyXbox member who's based there.  Pati lalagyan daw maganda.  No further details too.  But it really exists.

Then the pi*** BD copies being sold here are just BD transfer to DVD 9. However, the PQ and AQ are very much like original DVDS! sometimes even better bec some R3 titles are released in Fullscreen format only while pi*** BD transfer to DVD9 are widescreen Grin
