i think the only thing that the ps3 can't do is to bitstream the audio signal for you to be able to let your lossless audio capable avr do the job. but for me minor lang ito, because the ps3 can decode the lossless audio anyway. but the ps3 can do tons more than a stand alone player. for some professionals, its still the best bluray player than any stand alone in the market right now, although of course it can change in the future, unless they update the ps3 with new hardware and not only firmware.

+1 Mas madami hindi nagagawa ang ibang stand alone player na nagagawa ng PS3 the only issue ng iba sa PS3 is the durability of its lens.

Ps3 is a great player, lens issue lang ang problem imo. I think if you dont play games and wanna just watch bd movies just go for the standalone. Right now in amazon the Samsung 1500 is at 229 dollars and you get a free matrix collection. Thats like 150 bucks for the player na. To me a great deal. Starting your bd collection with the matrix collection is excellent considering it has great pq and aq

but these stand alone players are too expensive .. I don't think so, the standalones now are cheaper than the ps3. Cheapest ps3 ata here is 18500 pesos. So lets take the sample of the samsung 1500 with matrix collection free. Thats 226 dollars ata with free shipping. So ship to JAC then to Manila. Total cost would be approximately 226 x 48 = 10,848 pesos plus shipping thru jac approx. 5,500 pesos ------------------ total 16,348 pesos Yun lang warranty is your risk shipping it in. Approximately 16,348 for a standalone bd with Matrix collection bd. Man to me thats a great deal na. Matrix collection in bd is around 70 dollars na. Just my opinion

The things I like about the PS3 which you probably won't get with a stand-alone BD player are 1) the wireless connectivity and the fact that it has a hard disk enabling you to download content easily and 2) the firmware upgradeabilty which continually improves the feature set and performance of your PS3. Now add the fact that it is an excellent BD player and DVD upscaler (never mind a game console) and I don't see why even consider a stand alone BD player unless it is really cheap.

too bad i got my ps3 when cheapest stand alone player was around 24k Ya ganun talaga electronics, in just a few months prices dive like crazy. Look at the lcd/plasma prices. In just less than a year ata, the price of my tv dropped by 50 thou ata.. ..This is the reason I think why bluray is not taking off bec people are just waiting for the prices of its hardware and software to dive. Thats why I dont buy sony/columbia discs when first released .. I wait bec they usually go to 14.95 ..Yun lang sometimes its a pain to wait for few months .. Also pansin ko warner is like this. Matigas talaga fox

But you need to bring the unit to a service center? Unlike the PS3 where you can do it on-line via LAN.

I don't think so, maybe the old profile 1.0 players. But the new players like Sony s350 and samsung 1500 meron na ata ethernet line in the back you can connect straight to the internet to update. These players can be updated pa to profile 2.0, you just need a 1 gig flashdrive and stick it at the back of the unit for profile 2.0

Some BD players, like the Samsung BD-P1500, have built-in ethernet and USB ports for firmware upgrades. You can connect directly to the internet to update it.

Depending on one's personal requirements, for me I find that PS3 is very versatile machine parang "One Stop Shop"...all entertainments under one roof! e.g. I'm a photographer so I love saving my photo files in PS3 then playback in my HDTV & with my favourite musics as the background playback while viewing. As mentioned by other members, if BD/DVD is the only main purpose, then Standalone is the obvious option. Hmm...speaking of SA player...I'm also eyeing some bargain deal during the Thanks Giving period.

No doubt some stand-alone BD players have a facility to update the firmware. I kinda doubt though if anyone else can match Sony's unrelenting PS3 firmware updaters. I've probably upgraded the firmware more than 5 times in less than a year, a couple of those updates were pretty significant.

The frequency of firmware updates of the PS3 is outstanding. Support for different audio formats have progressed since the PS3's introduction.
as for dedicated BD players, this may pose a challenge - frequency, and significance of the firmware upgrades.

i don't know the answer yet. but having come from the HD fold, i'm almost tempted to get the PS3 because at least, even if blu ray does not take off, i still get a working gaming console. parang na-trauma na ako about the format wars. and not that i have time to play games. hehe.

hehe..Im still using my toshibas viewing both hddvds and region 1 dvds. Hopefully lang it won't malfunction or something in that nature ..We are in the Phils so if something happen, goodbye na. At least in america they have toshiba support there. In regards to bd standalone, ganun din if bd does not make it, Dvd player nalang ..
