Better than Wal-Mart's Father's Day offer posted by NY a few months ago: Best Buy Sells First Sub-$100 Blu-Ray Player, with a CaveatPosted 10/21/08 at 10:23:13 AM | by Paul Lilly Whether you're looking to purchase a standalone Blu-ray player or going for the entertainment combo kill with Sony's Playstation 3 console, the cost of entry remains a prohibiting factor for many consumers. This gets compounded by the fact that upscaling DVD players cost far less than Blu-ray while still offering a better picture than standard DVDs. But what if you could pick up a Blu-ray player for under $100? Now you can, in a roundabout sort of way. Best Buy has started selling Insignia's NS-BRDVD Blu-ray player for a cent under $200 and with it a coupon book for $100 worth of Blu-ray flicks from Disney, Touchstone, and Miramax. The player itself is pretty spartan with few of the features found on higher end models, and it remains to be seen whether $100 in free movies will prove enticing enough (for $1 extra per month, Netflix subscribers can add Blu-ray titles to their queue), but it is the least expensive Blu-ray player around. Kinda. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/best_buy_sells_first_sub100_bluray_player_with_a_caveat

Blu-Ray Player Pricing May Drop to $150 in Time for Holiday SeasonTo the victor go the spoils, so why then is Sony having such a tough time pushing its Blu-ray format on consumers now that HD-DVD has long been laid to rest following the high-definition format war? There's no single answer, and instead the explosion of digital downloads (thanks in large part to Netflix, who is intent on getting its streaming service on every device out there), upconverting DVD players, and high prices are all factors leading to a slower adoption rate than many might have thought.
Looking for a holiday surge and reacting to market conditions, high prices may soon become less of a factor. According to ABI Research, holiday season prices for Blu-ray players could hover in the $150-$200 range, despite previous market forecasts to the contrary. The price drops can already be seen, particularly in what ABI calls tier 2 players, models which have been available for 6-9 months. On Amazon, it's possible to pick up an earlier model player along with four Blu-ray movies for under $200, and more deals like it will probably surface within the next month.
Would you be willing to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon if player pricing drops to the $150 range? http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/rumor_bluray_player_pricing_may_drop_150_time_holiday_season

Imo, Useless for players to go that low if software is still so high. 199 price point to me is a great deal already. Siempre you can't beat 128 bucks. At 199 to 220 bucks for players few months ago, software sales should already be kicking in now, which it is not. The ever so argued "attach rate" that bd don't wanna hear...I think its mostly people that have blu-ray na that are purchasing these players for their second and third players. But who knows right? I will just eat my words in a couple of months when I'm wrong ..Thats why I don't play the stock market bec Im not that great in analyzing ..But I think its more on the high-middle to upper class ( no offense on lower income groups or other upper class who haven't bought into blu-ray ) that are purchasing blu-ray. Analysis ko lang

The whole point of Blu-ray is to make more money for the owners of the technology. DVD profits are going down, so they needed a new format that would revitalize those profits.
Unfortunately, the BD format is not gaining the momentum they expected after the death of HD DVD. To boost sales, one strategy is to provide the public with low-cost players, the idea being that if you already have the player, you will eventually buy a lot of BD discs.
Now, if the BD disc prices will also drop, then that would defeat the very purpose of Blu-ray, which is precisely to increase profits. That's why they can't just drop disc prices so soon.
You can see a parallel with the way music formats developed. First, CD profits skyrocketed, then leveled off, then dropped. To revitalize profits, they introduced DVD-Audio and SACD, the more expensive formats intended to boost profits.
They expected the new high resolution formats to replace the CD, but the public didn't bite. Instead of embracing high-res audio, the public went in the opposite direction --- consumers flocked to the iPod and the lower-res MP3, and CD was never replaced as the dominant audio format.
I foresee the same thing with BD. The average consumer will stick to SD DVD; many of them will get interested in video downloads; although some of them will have a few BD discs on the shelf.

A lot of the stores don't offer their special sale on-line and you have to be there personally to avail it. And off course their exclusive limited BD and DVD releases.
