Shouldn't be long until we get China branded blu-ray players.

Curtis Mathes is actually a US brand, pero mostly sourced stuff nga. Smiley

I remember they used to market themselves as a premium brand, tapos dahil palugi na they went lower and lower in pricing and quality hanggang naging K-Mart and Sears brand. Ewan ko ngayon, mukhang trying to enter the discount store scene ata. Smiley

Wal-mart rolls back cheap Blu-ray player price to $98

Wal-Mart has just lowered the price on the Magnavox NB530MGX Blu-ray player. The new price is $98, which is a rollback from the previous price of $168. This is the same model player that was sold on Fathers Day weekend for $128.

Normally we would steer people clear of the low end Blu-ray players, but at this price we can’t think of a single reason not to buy one. You can buy 3 of these players for the price Wal-Mart is charging for the Sony BDP-S360!

Does this price tempt you to pick up a second Blu-ray player for the bedroom?

Significant drops in the cost of Blu-ray releases should follow soon - hopefully before the end of the year. The Warner Asia-Pacific VP I spoke with during the launch mentioned that HD migration was a priority area for them. He was frank about the current situation. People have slowed down on their DVD and DVD hardware purchases regardless of the endless variant editions available, so now there's a concerted effort from the studios and manufacturers to convince consumers to upgrade.

I kidded about the inevitable Php599 to Php999 Blu-ray price point and he said that anything's possible.

The drop-off in sales of DVD is the result of the rampant piracy and illegal downloads that led to the near-death of CD.  Tongue Tongue Tongue I'm suprised there's already HD rips of blu ray movies just coming on sale in the US. Roll Eyes

Well piracy, yes, but he was referring to the US DVD market which is driven by endless upgrades and variant releases. There's consumer fatigue in that part of the world, and the only bright spot is HD, at least for now.

I was asked a lot about downloads, btw. That seems to be an evolving component of their strategy. And yes, they're aware of online piracy, but rather than fight it, which is extremely difficult, they want to provide a better alternative that local consumers will willingly embrace. For example, would you buy videos from a local iTunes-type store if it were priced like a mobile MP3 file? Would you download copy-protected WMV/AVI files from vendo machines to your personal USB drive at Php50 per film?

If it contains the entire Warner, New Line, HBO and Showtime catalog of more than 15K selections - I probably would.

'Got my Wal-Mart $98 BD player (for the bedroom)!  Grin

For the price, this is an awesome player. It's fast loading and has excellent comparable video quality to the PS3 (both DVD and BD).

I dunno about your source. But before buying this very cheap Magnavox NB530MGX BD player I have researched the internet first (AV forums, Blu-ray.com) and found positive reviews about it. It does not have BD Live but this one will be used in the bedroom anyway plus you can't beat the price. The Insignia BD player at Best Buy is still selling for $120.

So far it has played all the BDs and DVDs I have tested.  Smiley

Cheers!

Very glad to hear alternative BD player prices going down the path of DVD players.  BD player makers should tie up with the studios and start inviting people to buy 10 BD titles to get a BD player free,   Grin
