Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Thy Womb’, starring Nora Aunor, to compete in Venice

Who needs the Metro Manila Film Festival, anyway?

Certainly not Brillante Mendoza, who can forget that the MMFF screening committee snubbed his latest film “Thy Womb”. Certainly not Nora Aunor, who stars as a Badjao midwife in the movie.

“Thy Womb” has just been invited to compete in the Venice International Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious filmfests.

This was announced on Thursday by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, a co-producer of “Thy Womb”.

The film will be declared as one of the entries in the Venice festival’s Main Competition Section in an official press conference in Rome on Thursday. The festival will run from August 29 to September 8.

Touted as Aunor’s comeback film, “Thy Womb” tells the story of a Badjao midwife who not only copes with the irony of her own infertility but also the challenges facing her impoverished community of sea gypsies in Tawi-Tawi.

Aunor will be twice honored in Venice. “Himala”, her classic 1982 film directed by Ishmael Bernal, will also be screened in a special section dedicated to restored masterpieces, which will include “Heaven’s Gate” and “Sunset Boulevard”.

"Sisteraka" (ABS-CBN Production Inc. and Viva Films): Vice Ganda and Kris Aquino team up in comedy film directed by Wenn Deramas. -- If, I have to pick one to BOYCOTT ... this is the one, since, this film stars Kris Aquino.

Update:

Kris backs out of MMFF movie
September 24, 2012

TV host-actress Kris Aquino revealed that she will no longer be part of the Metro Manila Film Festival movie "Sisteraka," which also stars her friend Vice Ganda.

Kris tweeted on Sunday, September 23, that she already "backed out" from the movie, after realizing she cannot work "7 days a week" without affecting her other projects. Aside from the daily talk show "Kris TV," she’s also in the TV drama "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw."

"Sisteraka" is Star Cinema and Viva Films’ entry to the 38th MMFF. It also stars Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.

"I didn't want to talk about work this weekend. But YES it's true I backed out of the MMFF movie w/ Vice Ganda," Kris tweeted.

'Thy Womb' an official Metro Filmfest entry
Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom
October 19, 2012

Nora Aunor’s internationally-acclaimed film, “Thy Womb”, is now an official entry to the 2012 Metro Manila Filmfest.

According to a report on TV Patrol on Friday, Oct. 19, Brillante "Dante" Mendoza’s film about an infertile Badjao midwife (Nora) finally made the cut after Unitel’s "Mga Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang" didn’t meet the production deadline and had to pull out of the filmfest.

In a text message sent to Yahoo! Philippines OMG!, Director Brillante who's currently in Mumbai for the Indian premiere of "Captive" expressed, "I'm happy and glad that we were given a chance to share our film with the Filipino audience. It's a nice Christmas gift for all the cast and crew to share a film that we are all proud of."

Nora and Mendoza are reportedly happy over this unexpected decision of the MMFF executive committee chair Francis Tolentino, who also heads the  Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“Thy Womb” recently got a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.  Shot in Tawi-Tawi, it also stars Bembol Roco, Lovi Poe and Mercedes Cabral.

The Grave Bandits (Tyrone Acierto) *** - Two young thieves who make their living stealing valuables from corpses in a cemetery gets chased into an island populated by people infected with an alien virus that cause them to attack and eat human flesh. This film is pretty much a comedic City of God meets 28 Days Later. It's often funny and at times scary though tonally, it's all over the place and frankly, I didn't like the way they resolved one of the plot threads. However, the leads are appealing and this is a better film than Tiktik and features fantastic visual effects and makeup (The best I've seen in a Filipino movie thus far!).

I don't know why this is relegated to the "new wave". The film is probably a better horror film than most of the past Shake Rattle & Roll's. The only thing this doesn't have are big-named stars. Otherwise, it's pretty mainstream.

Serves her right for wanting to watch Enteng.

Thy Womb (Brillante Mendoza) ***1/2 - In the southern-most area of the Philippines, there live an ethnic group of Filipino Muslims called the Badjaos who make their home in villages on stilts in the coastal waters. This is where director Brillante Mendoza's latest opus is set. A barren Muslim midwife seeks a second wife for her husband in order for him to have his own child. This is actress Nora Aunor's comeback from a rather long hiatus from acting and I have to say: she's still got it. Her talents lends itself very well to Mendoza's neo-realist style. It's a fascinating look at a different culture right here in the Philippines and the humanity all of us share. It's also gorgeously shot and beautiful to look at.

^buti nga. Sign na yon na sawa na ang mga tao.
Just saw Thy Womb. It's not an easy movie to watch lalo na pag di ka sanay sa indie movies. Mabagal at parang walang nangyayari. And you will not be hit on the head with a message. No sampalan or dramatic confrontations. Lots of quiet quiet scenes. Sobrang bitin lang. Akala ko magkaka-teary ending pero wala. It just subtly makes you think about a woman's worth if she can't bear children or if she fetches a high dowry.

The Hobbit sa Imax hehehe

seriously, yung El Presidente pwede na if you don't mind the following:

1. Emilio Aguinaldo once parkour'd out of a bahay kubo.
2. He dual wielded 2 revolvers, and killed 20 people with them.
3. He dueled with a Spanish officer who was wielding 2 swords, and killed him. With a balisong.
4. Bamboo is bulletproof.
5. As are dead bodies.
6. Emilio Aguinaldo died of a heart attack. Twice.
7. Every man in the 1890s had 4 sets of fake moustaches, which he was not to wear to the next battle.
8. Every time two armies armed with rifles faced off against one another, they would charge at one another before firing said rifles at close range.

Here's what i found online on why to watch Thy Womb
Sayang lang kasi this is the only period na walang foreign movies na ka-kumpetensya ang Pinoy movies, di tulad ng Cinemalaya na sa CCP at ilang piling cinema lang pwedeng panoorin. You can watch Star Cinema movies practically every week! Sana, really special movies that can raise the Pinoy audience's minds and feed their souls pag filmfest, like Tanging Yaman, Rizal...Kung pambata, yung animated movie na RPG: Metanoia that was co-produced by Star Cinema was really, really good. Tungkol sa computer games pero Pinoy na Pinoy from the sar-sari stores to the tumbang-preso game.  I wish it came out on DVD.

uplifting Filipino cultural standards requires people who want this to happen to make unpopular decisions and choices

the trend of giving token slots to movies like The Womb during the MMFF and categorizinging them to the indie scene will not help the said effort

preferably popular movies should have the whole year to themselves to duke it out with hollywood releases

the MMFF should be reserved for featuring better crafted films so the masses will be able to distinguish the golden wheat from the chaff, this is already the long established and widely accepted practice of other filmfests here and abroad where only the best of the best are featured without consideration for their appeal to the "masses"

the MMFF should not deviate from that

Post by: Klaus Weasley on Dec 29, 2012 at 01:07 PM
Amen to that, devlin_waugh.

The problem of Thy Womb is not that Filipinos are too stupid to get it and foreigners are smarter, no. It's the fact that films like Thy Womb appeals primarily to film buffs and film critics, not the average movie-goer. An average movie-goer, regardless of nationality, will find Thy Womb boring and difficult to sit through because it does not go for the usual narrative beats that they're used to in mainstream cinema (be it Filipino, Hollywood or whatever). I've seen Brillante Mendoza's previous films so I knew what to expect and I'm used to his style so I found the film fascinating and moving. But I can see how someone who only goes to the movies once a month or a few times a year who only wanna have a good laugh or an easy kilig will find this boring.

But that's still NOT an excuse for mainstream movies to be lazy in their writing, acting and directing. And that's also not saying that an indie film CAN'T appeal to mainstream audiences. Zombadings and Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia crapapay and heck even the "New Wave" film The Grave Bandits are very commercial and will appeal to mainstream audience if they just give it chance! An avenue like the MMFF is a perfect opportunity for such films to find an audience and to flourish. I think the MMFF should try and look at films from Cinemalaya and CinemaOne to show during the festival.

The MMFF should be taken from the MMDA and be given back to Mowelfund since they helped re-establish the festival in 1975. There were a mixture of commercial and seriously good movies which were best represented in 1976 with Ganito Kami Noon... Paano Kayo Ngayon?, Insiang, Minsa'y Isang Gamu-Gamo and then there was Kisame Street. 1982 included films like Himala, Moral and Ang Panday Ikatlong Yugto. Moviegoers should be given equal fare during the festival and it was at the MMFF where some of the best Filipino films were first shown.

Sisterakas just earned around P235M........ seriously?

I watched Sisterakas and it was a sure hit for most of the viewers. I didn't get most of the humor though. Kris' acting and Vice Ganda's skimpy costumes gave me goosebumps.

Hey, if she wants to be respected as an actress, she has to step out of her freakin' comfort zone first.  For starters, how about wearing clothes that acknowledge and dignify her rather full figure, not decotellages worthy of Solenn Heussaff's body. The university professor/armchair critic should not be expected to kiss the presidential sister's heinie even if out of obligation.

Sisterakas reportedly grossed P320 million as of January 5, according to a tweet from Kris Aquino.

Geez, can the MMDA release MMFF box office results quickly and accurately?

MMFF 2012 sets box office record

Although this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is still ongoing, it has already set a new record of P702 million in ticket sales, beating last year's P636 million.

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief Francis Tolentino announced the new record in an in an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com on Monday.

"Definitely na break na namin yung last year. As of 1 p.m. today na break na namin. Nag-P702 million na 'yung buong gross ng festival. Last year ay P636 million lang. So, mayroon pang one day to go bukas (Tuesday)," Tolentino said.

Meanwhile, Tolentino refused to confirm if the comedy film "Sisterakas" is now the country's top-grossing film of all time.

There have been reports on social media on Monday afternoon that the blockbuster comedy starring Kris Aquino, Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas has already overtaken "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin" as the all-time box-office champ.

Tolentino said the MMDA, which organizes the annual film fest, will release other details on Tuesday.

"Bukas ko ilalabas kasi last day bukas (Tuesday)," he said.

Before Monday, the last official box office update provided by the MMDA was for the period of December 25 to January 1., which showed "Sisterakas" leading the pack with P231.9 million, followed by "Enteng" (P104.5 million); the family drama "One More Try" (P91.3 million); and the horror film "Shake, Rattle & Roll 14" (P34.6 million).

As of Saturday, January 5, Aquino said on Twitter that "Sisterakas" has already grossed over P320 million in nationwide earnings after 12 days and is on track to beat the record set by "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin" which made P331.61 million when it was released in 2011.

Jointly produced by Star Cinema and Viva films, "Sisterakas" is now the second all-time highest grossing local film.

that would be enough basis to let movies like Sisterakas be released anytime of the year and compete with hollywood releases if they really are that bankable and not reliant on MMFF to be a sure blockbuster

if they can be commercially viable the MMFF can then be reserved for true film festival calibre films to let the public know the difference of good films against crass movies

Watched only 2 movies, strangers and the SRR. These movies contain images the necessitated the abundant use of technical knowhow and technology. Our movie industry really needs more improvement, more importantly on the technical side. I am just curious, is it because of the lack of budget or lack of knowledge on the part of the movie makers? Except purely drama of comedy movies, thanks at walang ibang hollywood or foreign movies ang pinapalabas or else, baka langawin itong mga to.

rather lack of political will to uplift the Filipino culture...

the local movie industry was about to do that before but because of martial law, the middle class who can demand for that kind of change were either killed, jailed, tortured or simply migrated...what's left was the poor and uneducated, the masses who're continually patronizing the junk we see on the screen, the things we hear on the radio and the stuff we watch on the television

right now i think the middle class is emerging as a game changer again because of more favorable conditions, so the timing is ripe for discussions like this to flourish and eventually be acted upon by the movers and the shakers of the industry...

They did it. Let's see how GMA Films will react with its future films.

'Sisterakas' is PH's highest grossing local film

The 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) comedy entry "Sisterakas" is now the country's highest grossing local film of all time.

In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com on Tuesday, Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino said "Sisterakas," which stars Ai Ai delas Alas, Vice Ganda and Kris Aquino, will set the record after earning more than P340 million when the annual film fest closes on Tuesday night.

"Baka umabot sila ('Sisterakas') ng P350 million. Siguro ngayon pumapalo na sila between P340 million to P350 million kasi hanggang gabi pa siya," Tolentino said.

Jointly produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films, "Sisterakas" has now beaten the  record set by "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin," also starring Vice Ganda, which made P331.61 million when it was released in 2011.

Meanwhile, Tolentino predicted that the total combined gross of all eight MMFF 2012 entries will reach between P750 million and P755 million -- also a record for the annual film fest.

Tolentino is expected to give full details of MMFF ticket sales on Wednesday.

Totoo ba talaga ang pinakita sa tv adds dito sa cebu where manila's large crowd are crazy about this films? it's ironic kasi dito sa cebu hindi talaga nag click yun mga films na yan.

Some Cebuano friends of mine demanded that Cebu's movie theater operators should be "freed from the tyrannical clutches of the MMFF" and be allowed to show other films that people there would like to watch. They link MMFF with Imperial Manila.

Manila is a very congested place and with the vacation, wala na talagang mapuntahan ang tao maliban sa mga malls na pinuno ng ganyang klaseng mga pelikula. Forced to good ang tao ika nga. Ako rin me nagbigay sa amin ng libreng ticket kaya napanood ko rin yung Strangers at SRR. But quality wise, pwedeng e-consider lang dapat ang mga'to for TV showing. For me, i feel that the industry just took advantage of the situation. ang mahal pa naman din.

What's sad is the fact na kinakagat ng masa kasi yun lang naiintindihan nila. What's even sadder is that MMFF film makers really target the jolog crowd kaya lang in the process, everyone get's locked up their kabaduyan. Its like all the coffee shops suddenly only sell taho coz its a taho festival and we all have to wait till the festival is over to have decent coffee again. (no offense to all taho lovers out there) :)

Changes must be made to stop the madness. The quality of the films showing in the MMFF continues to deteriorate. I've only seen the previews on TV because lets face it, they're on every channel. But the "Enteng Kabisote..." preview really makes me wanna throw up. Bad taste talaga. Once a year na nga lang sila mag-produce ng movie, basura pa. There are scenes there that are baduy even in the 80's and yet they still recreate the same scene today. Really pathetic.

I just hope these guys learn to upgrade the standards in making movies. Napag-iwanan na tayo talaga ng ibang mga Asian countries. Nakakahiya na.

Pinoy moviegoers deserve better.

Amen. Unfortunately with the ton of money that the MMFF movies made, they will just stick to the same formula. Look for a Sisterakas movie every year for the next few years AT LEAST.
