Title: Why I buy my Region-Free Blu-ray Discs from Amazon.co.uk
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Nov 08, 2012 at 02:39 PM
This is my latest Amazon-UK purchase that I just picked up from the post office today:

Total cost of discs including shipping: GBP 35.72 = PHP 2346.14

Add the PHP 40 Post Office Handling Fee: 2346.14 + 40 = PHP 2386.14

=====

So I got 9 movies on Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk for less than the price of The Amazing Spider-Man on 3D Blu-ray from local stores (PHP 2500).

Just a quick reminder to everyone that as long as you're not in a rush and aren't doing impulse purchases, this is one of many cheaper options available to you in the internet age.  ;)

very nice sir. I ordered 4 box sets. Matrix, American Pie, Bourne and Jurassic. However, I had it shipped to the US johnny air pa.

40.20 GBP total. Of course i'll have to anticipate the additional shipping from JAC to the Philippines. pero even with that added, it's still way cheaper than buying anything locally.

but i'm interested in your direct shipping method. what address do you put in there? the post office nearest to you? I might consider that if that's actually cheaper than going through JAC pa.

additional question Kapitan., How much did Amazon UK charged for shipping to Ph? I reckon Post Office Handling fee isn't a fix amount but it just depends on the postman..

Nice! And that's as long as your purchase is GBP 50 or less, right?

Just now, I tried ordering for X-Men Quad, GBP 12.49 and Lethal Weapon Quad GBP 15.39.. What I don't understand is, those 2 items had a total of GBP 23.24 only and they charged an additional GBP 5.07 for postage and handling.
Total cost: GBP 28.31... Or~ Php 1900..
much cheaper compared to US..

You can use your home or office address.  A notice will be sent to your home indicating their arrival and customs check.  You then have 30 days to get it from the post office in the area of your delivery address.

Shipping fee is a fixed rate for small packets.  Post Office handling fee is P40.00.

Since the shipment is for an international address, the GST is removed before the S&H is applied.

Most of the questions have been answered correctly by bartender, but for clarity, I'll summarize, from my point-of-view:

1. I use my home address, and I pick it up at the local post office. Fortunately I'm from QC, and the QCPO is mostly fair about customs duties, and still follows the unwritten "no tax on orders below $50" rule. About 2 years ago, I did have a customs officer notice my order was 50 in GBP (not USD), and he converted and I ended up paying about PHP 1400 in customs duties. Just as an example, even if you add 1400 to my order here, it would still be MUCH cheaper than buying these three boxed sets locally.

2. Shipping for this particular order was £6.56. This particular shipment took a VERY long time, though. I placed the order on September 25, Estimated Delivery date was October 8, and I only got the postal notice TODAY, November 8. Like I said, no rush on my part, since these particular titles are just replacing DVDs I already own in my collection.

3. Yeah, the postage handling fee is for storage at the post office, not by your postman, and is fixed at PHP 40.

4. Yes, the prices you see on the Amazon.co.uk website will still go DOWN after you get them shipped to a Philippine (or even a US) address, since as long as it's not sold in the UK, they remove the GST (or the VAT, as we know it.)

5. Let me reiterate: Kung may topak yung customs officer sa post office pagkuha mo ng package, you can still get charged for customs duties. There's no guarantee that you'll always get the item tax-free if it's under $50 (shipping INCLUDED in the $50). It's just usually the case for orders sent to QCPO.

6. Always remember: You need to be sure you're buying titles that specifically indicate they're Region Free. Don't blame this recommendation if you end up with a Blu-ray disc that won't play since you failed to make sure of that fact.

Happy online shopping.  ;)

We're lucky that in QC, the customs officer is not greedy. They don't even open the package, in my experience, they just ask you what is inside. The only time there was an inconvenience was when at 11:30am they all went to lunch and there was no one to release my package until after the break at 1:30pm.

I agree the blu-ray discs are priced much cheaper in Amazon.UK -even the shipping charge is less expensive than its US counterpart so I get to purchase from them every now and then; the only downside that I noticed especially in their more popular titles is that the bonus features are somewhat lacking or worse, excluded from their discs. So if you're a special features junkie, Amazon.UK is not the way to go.

Do you tell them you have BDs or DVDs?

My packages are opened about 30% of the time, and they're always BD/DVDs, and it's never been an issue.

I've noticed the special feature issues on titles they release ahead of the US, maybe before production on the special features has been completed. It hasn't been an issue with Warner titles. And it's on-and-off with other studios. So I'd still say go for it AFTER you've checked if the special features you're looking for are intact. It's just WAY cheaper.

Yes, that's right sir.
Price-wise, the majority would prefer buying from Amazon.UK but some picky collectors may gripe about the difference in the art work and packaging between the US and UK versions. Even the ratings logo on the front cover of UK BDs can be a source of irritation for some. Lucky for us, we don't belong to that group  ;)

The only gripe i have with uk bds is that their blu ray cases are not sexy. It takes more space than the slimmer us amaray cases. Other than that, the releases are fine. Some might be bare bones releases nga lang. So check the product reviews before making that purchase.

From what I gathered in the other threads/posts here in pDVD, it depends on the post office where the ordered items are dropped off. It was mentioned several times Pasay City is notorious for collecting duties based on questionable computation. Dito kasi sa amin, P40 per package lang ang binabayaran ko, even if the declared value is more than US$50 as long as the box is not big enough to catch attention. The biggest single package (approximately 5" x 12" x 9") I got from Amazon US contained 5 DVDs back when I was still into DVDs.

You just need to register. You also need to pay via credit card but don't worry, it's relatively safe naman. Been a happy Amazon UK buyer since 2010 and at Amazon US since 2002. I also tried Amazon Canada and Japan before, but Amazon UK always give me the best blu ray shopping experience  ;D

I use a debit card. Whenever I want to purchase online, I just "unlock" the internet transaction tru my phone and 5~15 minutes later, I will receive a text about my purchase and how much had been deducted to my funds..

And the word "Shipped" had been replaced by "Dispatched"...

I think you need to get a card that can be used online. BPI is offering a card for online use (forgot what it's called) and also Unionbank has the EON. I believe those 2 will work.

A question Kapitan... When your items did not arrive on time, did Amazon UK refund the postage? I got a refund for postage when my item bought from Amazon US arrived late...

Nah. I don't mind the delay, and I've gotten used to it as being part and parcel of living in a Third World country.

I used to complain about it, and ended up with over a dozen duplicate orders (since they used to reship all items once the delivery was 2 weeks over their estimated delivery time), which I tried to return every time. They'd always say "As you live abroad, keep the item with our compliments or try to donate it to a public library."

Nahiya na ako, since I realized I have NEVER lost an order, and sometimes weird things happen and my order just arrives really, really late. Besides, there was a time when they started to blacklist people who would complain about the orders and end up with duplicates - one of our members here at PinoyDVD was complaining about it happening to him. Amazon really just cancelled his account. I suppose there was a some abuse to the system.

I've probably placed around 200 online orders at Amazon (US, UK, Germany and France), and not once have I had a problem of the item not arriving. But when I use standard shipping to the Philippines, I'd say only 20 of those arrived by the estimated due date.

=====

So, to make a long story short: NO, but they might if you ask them to. ;)

If youre very patient in waiting... Amazon UK is the right place for region free blurays as well as those box sets.  They are lots of stores here selling cheaper than amazon uk. Yesterday I ordered 2 boxsets classic films collection of Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone unbelievable price compared to US/amazon UK blurays.

ex: Robert De Niro Collection Amazon UK £39.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Niro-Collection-Blu-ray-Region-Free/dp/B009CSWM4S/ref=sr_1_3?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1354021255&sr=1-3)
'Once Upon a Time in America' (1984)
'Heat' (1995)
'Goodfellas' (1990)
'The Mission' (1986)

but able to get this to other shop to 7.99 here for 7.99 (http://www.sainsburysentertainment.co.uk/en/Films-TV/Blu-ray/Robert-De-Niro-Collection/product.html?product=E11156581)

Sylvester Stallone Collection Amazon UK £11.75 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sylvester-Stallone-Collection-Blu-ray-Region/dp/B008PEHWEK/ref=pd_cp_d_h__1)

'Assassins' (1995)
'The Specialist' (1994)
'Tango and Cash' (1989)
'Demolition Man' (1993)
'Cobra' (1986)

this one in Amazon is cheap already for the 5 films but still able to get a wee bit cheaper 7.99 here (http://www.sainsburysentertainment.co.uk/en/Films-TV/Blu-ray/Sylvester-Stallone-Collection/product.html?product=E11156631)

Note: prices reflected above could change anytime.

Prolly i know some here it's not your cup of tea the classic films but for me as collector's it's a must especially if not so burden to your pocket.

Most online shops here selling DVD/Games/bluray free delivery within UK. Been living here for 7 years anyway.

Prolly i know some here it's not your cup of tea the classic films but for me as collector's it's a must especially if not so burden to your pocket.
But those BD's are not Region-Free..

^ Could you also please verify the region code of "The Mission" from the Robert De Niro Collection? I want to know before I buy myself a set.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Robert-De-Niro-Collection-Blu-ray/56832/ (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Robert-De-Niro-Collection-Blu-ray/56832/)

Apparently, Blu-ray.com also identifies the set as region-free but upon closer inspection of the individual titles,  the same webpage shows "The Mission" is the only movie in the set that is region B

Which box set titles don't have the same special features as that of their US counterpart?

I used to order sa Amazon.com & ebay.com ng mga cd's ko & dvd's, halos bulk orders of $50 up.

First arrival sa Tondo Post office, I got a letter na may package ako.

I went there maaga, when I entered I noticed an old lady & a mid-30's woman on the same room who see me.  They handed me the box, and ask me what was it. I told them 2nd hand cd's for my collection.  The old lady told me that next time they would charge me tax for my package. Then I say thanks & bid them goodbye. I also asked if they have calling card para sa heads up kung may package ako in the future.

Me, not knowing na may isa pa palang package dun for me na galing HMV.UK naman. Then mga lunch time they texted me na may isa pa ako package. Sabi ko bukas ako ng umaga ulit punta.

Kinabukasan, before I went there, I went to Jollibee and got them a breakfast meal. Pag dating ko sa Tondo Post Office, diretso na ako sa room nila & handed over the foods. Sabi ko almusal po muna tayo.  They were happy & they just gave me my packages na wala ng tax.

For 3-5 months ganun naging setup namin, (syempre iba ibang food naman) naging friends ko naman sila, chickahan if may time pa ako.

Well that solved my custom tax's duties hehe  ;D ;D ;D ;D

And now....well....wala na ako credit card...so no more US orders for me  :-[

I also placed an order on November 16th, but mine is nowhere in sight. I'm expecting this probably early next year due to the Christmas rush. Saan post office mo, Columbia? I used to get my Amazon-UK orders that fast, but not anymore.

I consider myself lucky. I ordered last Jan. 3 and Jan. 6... The Jan. 3 order had an ETA of Jan 15 (but did not yet arrive) and the Jan. 6 order (with Jan 17 ETA) arrived last Friday (Jan. 18)...

Try to wait for another week before asking for a refund...

I'm almost sure both your order and your replacement order will arrive. It happens a lot; for some reason, Amazon-UK delivery is always very late in QC - often over a month from the estimated delivery date. I stopped complaining after around 3 replacement orders ended up being duplicates.

Did you return the duplicate orders? Before in amazon.com I also get duplicate orders.  After I got the duplicates, I inform them and they just tell me to donate to the local library.  But this time, they are requesting to return the duplicate orders and have instructions to print out some papers with a barcode to be included in the return package.  Any postage expenses will be refunded.

Just once, the last time it happened and I got similar instructions. At QCPO, it's simple: Just tell them "Return to Sender" IF the package is still unopened. Never followed up if they actually did return it, since at that point, I felt my obligation was done.

Slightly OT:

I ordered 3 posters from a 3rd party seller (PosterRevolution) last Jan 19, they will ship it by Jan 23. That date came and I still did not receive any email that they "dispatch" the item. So I contacted the seller and they replied that they already "dispatched" it. This is their reply:

"In reference to your concern, your order is being shipped by Brokers World Wide Standard delivery. Items shipped via this method are shipped in bulk to the destination country and then, turned over to that country's Local Postal Service for delivery to the specific address."

The posters cost about Php 102.00 but shipping cost Php 1003.00...

Item(s) Subtotal:    £1.51
Postage & Packing:    £14.97
     -----
Total:    £16.48
     -----
Total for this Delivery:    £16.48

The posters are:

James Bond Skyfall October Teaser Movie Maxi Poster - 61x91 cm

The Godfather - Red Rose - Maxi Poster - 61 cm x 91.5 cm

Back To The Future Maxi Poster 61 cm x 91.5 cm

I took a gamble about it's region coding considering that it cost more than Php 2000 (excluding S&H) if ordered from Amazon US [I can now confirm that it's region free]. The Amazon UK cost me Php 1330.00 (including 40 from PO). The product was ordered last Feb. 12.....

Also thinking of doing the same thing, ordering abroad and having them shipped to the Philippines. But with the new IP code of the Philippines, the news said will no longer allow books and DVDs to brought to the Philippines.

Is it still possible to order online and have them shipped here or not anymore?

Cheaper ata yung box since each yellow pouch subject sa minimum 2lbs nila..

but on the JAC service, depende ilan order mo from amazon and if sabay siya dadating sa isang box. usually 6 or more blu rays inoorder ko per batch and nasa box lang siya na maliit. around 800 to 1k depende sa bigat yung charge nun ng JAC.

As a general rule, if it's under US$50 (including shipping), kadalasan walang tax. Ako, nakakalusot ang under £50. I don't think they notice it's sterling and not dollars.

Nagreshuffle sa QCPO. Wala na lahat ng kakilala ko at the package claim window when I went there last month. Si Aling Mena, retired na rin. I still didn't have to pay customs duties, though.

Planning on buying in bulk, so might as well go with JAC. Any update sa service nila? It's been almost a year since I last used them, di ko alam if may changes in terms of customer satisfaction.

no..its not with JAC, "setup just like JAC"... like I have their UK address of that courier then amazon UK will send my order there then they will the one to send it here in Philippines... the courier's Borderlinx (not po JAC, clarification lang po :) ) with JAC, i love their service...

Ouch. hehe. Ok that makes sense. Pero if  in case you're going to order several titles from Amazon UK, you can still ship it straight to JAC naman.

I ordered several Steelbooks and "steel/metal case" from Amazon UK months ago and when they arrived, they were "packaged" individually with "excellent" protection. NO dents whatsoever... and lately, they arrived much sooner than their delivery estimate. Last month, I ordered the "Friends The Complete Season 1-10 UK release" when it was on sale. Php 3288.14 was charged to my debit card. It arrived 10 days later. Total cost: Php 3338.14 (php 50 na ang Post Office)...

Another good thing when you purchase from Amazon UK, they exclude the VAT if the delivery is outside the European Union.  :)

Don't worry about that. It used to take about 10-12 days for me, as well, but the past few years, it averages 30-35 days (via QC post office). Don't bother sending a "I have not received my package" message yet. Even if it's 3-4 weeks late, you'll get it. If they send a replacement order, you'll end up with duplicates.

Don't sweat it, seriously. :) I've done well over a hundred transactions with Amazon, Amazon UK, Amazon France, Amazon Germany and Amazon Canada. Number of transactions that never arrived: ZERO. Even when my shipment was delivered to the Cubao P.O., and the post office burned down before I could pick it up, the item was replaced and I received it.

Just be careful about asking for replacements for orders that seem very delayed, since like I said, you'll end up with duplicates. There's a limit to how often they'll indulge you. One PinoyDVD member learned the hard way that they were actually keeping track of the number of times he requested replacement orders for delayed packages that eventually arrived. Amazon cancelled his account, telling him he was poor risk for their company. No appeals were entertained; even when he got his sister to order for him with a new account, they noticed the address and refused to accept the order.

I can totally relate. haha I was like this back in August 2012 when I started collecting blu rays. Medjo unsure if my items would get delivered talaga coming from UK and the US. Over 1 year of collecting, once lang may sumabit and that was a $3.99 blu ray na di nadeliver ng Amazon sa address ng tita ko sa New York. So I just talked to one of their online reps and they sent me a new copy na dumating naman.

I've done that before and complained to Amazon.  They sent me another set and gave me a refund for it.  When I insisted on returning the items or paying for it, they refused.

In my complaint, I told them that DHL is charging me duties when the Amazon invoice clearly said there was none to be paid.

Curious: when you say "new items", are you still referring to blu rays? If this is the case, and you're just getting 1, 2 or 3 titles, di ka ba mapapamahal kung via JAC pa? Some members are complaining of the 2 lb minimum weight recently implemented by the courier in the other thread. Sulit lang ang 2 pounder if you're buying in bulk or even BD sets.

I thought so. It will turn up more expensive since the other one is still for dispatch. Better contact JAC. I think they will bill you separately for this, similar to this one:

I shared the sentiments of the last poster (kenobi). I got my packages yesterday and was informed that about a week has passed since they started implementing 2lbs minimum package charge even if you are a pdvd member. They should have announced it months before so we can be prepared. Or, they could have emailed their regular customers that beginning such date JAC will be charging 2lbs minimum. It's bad enough that amazon.com split my packages into two, now I paid almost double for each!

But if money is not a problem, you want your items to get here faster and you feel more secured in using a courier service, then it's okay.  ;)

pwede mo hindi tanggapin.  what i do is tell them to return back to sender.  i then email amazon that due to the exorbitant fee DHL is charging I have to refuse the delivery of the item.

Hi guys,

I just ordered the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy and Alien Anthology. Wanted to keep the cost below $50 with shipping included. Total damage is £28.19 or around P2,200.

Now what I'm concerned is QCPO. From experience, they always check the items when I get it from Window 39 but never got any tax kasi low value small items from Ebay yung napapadala ko before. Baka madali lang ng customs if they see its bluray, boxsets and dalawa pa. Any thoughts on this? :X

I pick up my Amazon-purchased Blu-rays/DVDs at QCPO, and have only had to pay customs duties less than 5% of the time. It's down to luck.

One tip that usually works is to arrive when they open in the morning. The customs guy usually isn't there yet. Hehe...

I'm not sure what happened, since I used to be very happy with Amazon-UK to QCPO shipping usually taking 10-12 days. Nowadays, it's usually over a month, frequently a few weeks beyond the estimated delivery date.

For quick current reference, my latest order from Amazon UK, which I placed on April 5, with an estimated delivery date of April 17 via Royal Mail, only arrived today, May 6. The postal notice arrived this morning, and I picked it up this afternoon at QCPO... no taxes/duties due.

So like I said... usually over a month.

Finally got my Amazon.co.uk blurays today! The QCPO notice arrived last week. The Customs Guy actually got the amazon box but only asked what the contents were. I honestly said Blurays and he didn't charge me anything. Awesome!  >:D

Here's the unboxed pic:

Will definitely try the Amazon.co.uk route again!

Bakit ba pagkamamahal ng mga blu-ray dito sa Pilipinas?  Is it because of the limited market?  I noticed sa US, relatively mura ang blu-rays compared sa price dito sa atin. Pagdating dito, 3 times ang price.  Better pa na bumili online.

My Amazon UK order arrived in just nine working days ;D
It includes BDs from a £10 for 2 sale, a marked down GoT S3 BD set and another BD title much cheaper than its US version.
Funny thing is, the package arrived together with my Black Friday week hauls from Amazon US which took almost 13 weeks to get here.

Latest order from Amazon UK arrived exactly 20 days after it was shipped out. OTOH, my order from Amazon US is still nowhere in sight. It was sent October 28th, so I informed customer service about the delayed delivery. A full refund was issued without asking the rep to do so, even after I told him I am willing to wait until the end of the month  :o

Edit:

One change I did notice: just like its US counterpart, Amazon UK is now using flimsy cardboard packaging when shipping blu-ray discs. Mine arrived damaged and wrapped in a Phlpost plastic bag together with this note:

Here's the condition of the package after removing the Phlpost plastic bag:

Fortunately, the BD cases and the discs were not damaged  :)

Select BD titles go on sale at Amazon UK from time to time. Recently I was lucky to get these two sealed Marvel BDs for £21 only (including shipping, or <P1,500) ^-^ ^-^ ^-^

I am new in Amazon and a new BD lover. At first, I got my BDs in Viva Sale wayback 2014 and got my first BD player that year too. Since then, I am looking for cheap BD titles at the mall and I literally find them expensive talaga. So I skip it until I read forum here. So I decided to give a try and one seller here got a really nice deal of good BD titles ranges from 200 to 500 each versus sa mall na 1,400 up.

Then came Amazon US. I tried purchasing some BD titles na prices are $2 to $10 and waited for some relatives na uuwe to Manila para free shipping (Amazon Prime)

Havent tried Amazon UK. Can anybody give me some tips on how to purchase from Amazon Uk since I dont have an UK/EU address unlike sa Amazon US which I have an US address to be shipped using LBC SC.

Newbie here. Salamat PinoyDVD

If you backread a few pages, orders from Amazon UK were shipped directly to Ph address. But beware of postal storage. Before, 50php per item/box lang. Now its 120(?) na..

Buti Kung yan Lang. Sa postal office in nova they charge me other custom tax aside from postal storage. Almost equal sa amount of what I bought sa uk.
