Let us talk about Criterion Collections here. Share your favorites, your collection..
Top 5
1. The Battle of Algiers - this film here is one of my all-time greats and my favorite Criterion Collection. This gave me a picture and an understanding about the brutality of politics and western hypocrisy. Made me a very open-minded person, too liberal and changed my views on anything forever..
2. Chungking Express - very original, exotic, fun and very sexy. Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece! :) Smelled the streets of Hong Kong while watching this film!!
3. Seven Samurai - this is a treat!! Funny, funny, funny.. I was so entertained by this film!!
4. Cul-de-sac - Roman Polanki's best IMHO!! Chinatown is great too but this for me is signature polanki. As with all of his films, keeps me on the edge on whats going to happen next. :)
5. The Game - David Fincher's finest!! You are talking about real thriller here.. suspense from start to finish with Fincher's dark, gritty and too visual his cinema signature..
-

Akira kurosawa's other masterpiece RAN also belongs here.

Thinking of buying my first batch of Criterion movies this week. Any ideas which films will be best to first populate my Criterion Collection?
-
depends mostly on your personal preference in films
CC selections are widely varied, one collector might favor a particular genre or director which another aficionado might not be inclined to view in his lifetime
-
Yeah. I really admire the diversity in their films. I was thinking of buying them chronologically, but realized not all of their titles have been released on Blu-ray yet.
Here's my partial list:
1. Hunger
2. Fish Tank
3. Seven Samurai
4. Purple Noon
5. Fanny and Alexander
6. Salo
7. The Royal Tenenbaums
8. The Last Temptation of Christ
9. Charade
10. Antichrist
-
If you wanna buy Criterions, I strongly suggest you guys wait for the bi-annual Barnes & Nobel Criterion sale. Whenever I have some money, I always buy a bunch from it. However, to save on international shipping fees and customs tax, I have my Criterions shipped to my aunt's house in the States and she usually ships it to me via a Balikbayan box that she sends periodically with stuff. It takes longer but the costs are cheaper.

Ooh, Criterions! I have a handful of blus and around 300 on DVDs (mostly the initial releases--and those that haven't been released in high-definition).
I get Criterion blurays only during the Barnes and Noble sale. Otherwise, I go the eBay route.
But with Criterions, I never discriminate--nor choosy with the format. I get them both on blu or DVD--whichever I find that is/are cheaper. Personally, it's about the aesthetic quality of the film and not in its technical detail.

If you spend $50 or more, it's free shipping.
I bought two Blu-rays and sent them to my aunt's house in California and she ships it to me, to avoid the predatory customs agents at the Philippine post office. :-P
-
I didn't know but thank you. :)
-
Didn't get anything from the flash sale. It's still a bit pricey to me. Unless I spend $50 or more, but I won't. I'd wait for the BN sale so I can use my member discount for an additional 10% off.
-
I've been collecting Criterions for quite some time now. I usually buy on sale at Amazon and BN.
My fave titles so far:
1. Paris, Texas
2. The Music Room
3. Le Samourai
4. Army of Shadows
5. Three Colors Trilogy
6. High and Low
7. Fanny and Alexander
8. The Night of the Hunter
9. House
10. Spirit of the beehive
-
How true that Oro Plata Mata is getting the Criterion treatment?
-
The buliding itself is said to be Roman Polanski's The Tenant, The Kid (boy wearing cap), Le Samourai (man holding birdcage), Scanners (man with migraine), La Strada ( clown crossing wire), Repo Man (girl with box of candy) and Autumn Sonata (musical notes).

Saw that yesterday. I have four of the six. Amazon already got them in backorder--at least, with Mafioso and Le Doulos.
-
Army of Shadows is now 60++ USD. I think they still have it at B&N and Frys
-
I just got Le Doulos from eBay for $30. Army of Shadows is already out of stock at BN.com, though some of their brick-and-mortar stores still carry them.
-
Frys still has it at 29.99

and just ordered the Apu Trilogy on B&N to take advantage of the 50% off discount plus the additional 30% off for Black Friday. I use JAC to ship my orders from the US here in the Philippines.
I would be glad to know classic foreign film enthusiasts here.
-
For me, I order from B&N or the Criterion site every time they have a sale and I have them ship it to my aunt's house in California. She usually sends us a Balikbayan box a few times a year so isasama na lang niya sa loob ng box na padala niya. Tipid ako sa international shipping and I avoid yun mga kupal na Customs taxes na yan.
-
Buti ka pa! Halos isang movie din ung halaga ng shipping fee. :'(
Do you blind buy titles o pinapanood mo muna before you buy a copy? What's your favorite so far?
-
I don't USUALLY blind-buy titles but I do on occasion. My favorite purchase so far is the Complete Jacques Tati box-set.
-
Ahh, heard a lot about the Tati box set. I might watch Playtime first. It's on my wishlist though I have titles in higher priority like completing all Ozu's and Kurosawa's (yeah, I'm into Japanese cinema).
-
I took advantage of the BN sale last year to get the Zatoichi set (with all the coupons and the BN membership discount, it was a steal). Haven't opened it yet, though. :)
I don't normally pay full price for Criterion (be it bluray or DVD---whichever is cheaper, but for the recent releases, I opt for the bluray) except during the BN sale. I go to eBay for used ones.
-
Yeah, it's wise to only buy during B&N sales and Criterion's own flash sales.
I actually got my Zatoichi box set for just 40$ (!!) on B&N's ebay account which is sort of a clearance sale or something. It was obviously a steal. I think the films would last me until the next two sales and I'm still waiting for the Apu Trilogy to arrive.
-
The flash sales are still a bit pricey compared to the BN sale. You still have to purchase at least $50 to avail of the free shipping from Criterion. Otherwise, the rate is five bucks. With the BN sale, I could get another ten off on top of their 50 off as a member (also with coupons they send via email or snail mail). Hence, I don't usually buy during the flash sales.
Now that the BN fall sale's over, I'm reverting to eBay. I'm a bit more selective now on buying films, it's either Criterion, BFI or MoC. I don't binge-buy like I used to. Haha.
-
That's right. You said you enjoy B&N's 10% off for members so that means you buy them in-store? Which ebay seller/s do you usually buy from?
-
Yep, I buy them in-store--but only during the sale. I'm based out of the country, hence the accessibility to BN.
With eBay, I don't buy from a particular seller. I simply use the search function and go from there. I still find the Buy-it-now option to be a bit pricey. I'd rather take my chances on the auction.

Guillermo del Toro has announced via Twitter that the Criterion Collection will release a Pan's Labyrinth 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray sometime this fall.
Below is the cover art by Becky Cloonan. I think it's quite good, but would have been even better to go with Mike Mignola just to have uniformity with Criterion's Cronos and The Devil's Backbone releases....

CRITERION ANNOUNCEMENT:
Pan's Labyrinth
An Academy Award–winning dark fable set five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War, Pan's Labyrinth encapsulates the rich visual style and genre-defying craft of Guillermo del Toro. Eleven-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero, in a mature and tender performance) comes face to face with the horrors of fascism when she and her pregnant mother are uprooted to the countryside, where her new stepfather (Sergi López), a sadistic captain in General Franco's army, hunts down Republican guerrillas who refuse to give up the fight. The violent reality in which she lives merges seamlessly with a fantastical interior world when Ofelia meets a faun in a decaying labyrinth and is set on a strange, mythic journey that is at once terrifying and beautiful. In his revisiting of this bloody period in Spanish history, del Toro creates a vivid depiction of the monstrosities of war infiltrating a child's imagination and threatening the innocence of youth.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Newly graded 2K digital master, supervised by director Guillermo del Toro, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Alternate DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary by del Toro from 2007
New interview with del Toro by novelist Cornelia Funke about fairy tales, fantasy, and Pan's Labyrinth
New interview with actor Doug Jones
Four 2007 making-of documentaries, examining the characters, production, special effects, themes, and music of the film
Interactive director's notebook
Footage of actor Ivana Baquero's audition for the film
Animated comics featuring prequel stories for the film's menagerie of creatures
Programs comparing selected production storyboards and del Toro's thumbnail sketches with the final film; visual effects work for the Green Fairy; and elements of the film's score

I just did a count - I have 113 Criterion Bly-Rays (and probably at least 200 Criterion DVD's and even a few Criterion laser discs in a box somewhere). It's a lot, I know, but I would buy them all if I could afford it.
I am really disappointed that there is no place to buy them in Manila. Fortunately I go to Hong Kong once every couple of months and there is a shop that will hold titles for me to pick up. Next week I will be getting Dr Strangelove, Fantastic Planet, The In-Laws.
For those of you who are buying Criterion discs from Amazon or B&N, what shipping methods are you using? What additional customs fees are you paying per disc?
Thanks!

Terrence Malick’s ‘Tree of Life’ Gets Longer Criterion Version
Terrence Malick has secretly been working on an extended version of “The Tree of Life,” which will be included by the Criterion Collection as a supplement to an enhanced special-edition Blu-ray and DVD release later this year.
“Terry doesn’t see this as a director’s cut,” says Criterion president Peter Becker, who insists that the 139-minute theatrical version is the official “director’s cut” and remains the centerpiece of the Blu-Ray edition. “It’s a fresh view of the film that has a different rhythm and a different balance.
The expanded 179-minute cut doesn’t contain more effects shots, and the epic creation sequence remains untouched. But it restores material that Malick was exploring for the version that was shown in Cannes, including specific events and characters that were referenced only elliptically in the original film.

Once you're signed in, you can start streaming easily and you can turn off the VPN. For me, it seems to work better in my Mac laptop using Safari. The player doesn't seem to work as well in Chrome and Windows PC.

I hope this isn't just a rumor:
We’re also hearing that a new 4K restoration of Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984) might be coming in the months ahead from Criterion, licensed to them by Warner Bros. This would include at least the theatrical version, which Forman ultimately considered to be his official director’s cut. (What’s been commonly known as the director’s cut was apparently felt by Forman to be a “DVD Cut” only.)

Criterion Lays Off 20 Percent of Staff in ‘Reorganization’ Move
Criterion has let go a number of staffers in a “reorganization” of the company that took place on Wednesday, October 19.
Criterion Collection President Peter Becker told IndieWire that the layoffs affected several departments — and about 20 percent of the company, with 16 employees laid off from a staff of over 80.
“Yesterday was a sad day at Criterion,” Becker said via email. “We had to part ways with a number of staffers across several departments as part of a reorganization intended to prepare the company for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, which are markedly different from the ones we had built ourselves up to address in the past.”
He added that there were no further staff changes planned. “We spoke personally with everyone impacted to express the company’s respect and our gratitude for their work, of which we all remain very proud,” he said.

The Criterion Collection has announced that it will release on Blu-ray Pasolini 101 (1961-1969), a nine-disc Blu-ray collection. The release will be available for purchase on June 27.

Including nine provocative, lyrical, often scandal-inducing films from the 1960s—Accattone, Mamma Roma, Love Meetings, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Hawks and the Sparrows, Oedipus Rex, Teorema, Porcile, and Medea—the decade in which this celebrated poet, novelist, and intellectual embarked on a feature filmmaking career, Pasolini 101 is a monument to the artist's daring vision of cinema.
