Title: Olive ONE
Post by: anchit on Dec 28, 2012 at 11:55 AM
I got this from their Facebook page:

http://www.myoliveone.com/

http://www.indiegogo.com/oliveone

It looks very interesting- concept, features, price wise. I have been wanting to have an Olive but its price its keeping me from owning one. if this Olive One becomes a reaility we can have this for just 499usd- roughly the price of a decent entry level CDP.

"Olive Media is launching its most affordable streaming music system in 2013 -- and it's turning to crowdsourcing site IndieGoGo to help prime the preorder pump.

The new Olive One is an audio streamer with a distinctive circular design housing a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. Like Olive's current product line, the One can stream from music libraries housed on networked PCs or network attached storage (NAS) devices; the built-in Pandora and Spotify apps (with more to follow); music libraries housed on the internal hard drive (found on the more expensive models); or app-based music services on tablets, smartphones, and handhelds via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi direct streaming.

Happily, unlike Olive's current lineup -- which starts at a hefty $1,499 -- the One's starting price is a reasonable $399. Versions with built-in 1TB and 2TB hard drives will cost $499 and $599, respectively. Those built-in hard drives will also be accessible to users remotely, enabling what Olive calls a "subscription-free home cloud" of online music.

(Credit: Olive Media)

True to Olive's high-end audiophile lineage, the One will feature a 32-bit/384kHz DAC by Burr-Brown, with the ability to play FLAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and WAV files, in addition to the more common MP3 and AAC formats.

The One will sport dual 32-watt-per-channel amplifiers -- just add speakers, and you're good to go. Right now, the One is not designed with analog or digital line outputs, but a company representative told CNET that Olive is "thinking about offering an adapter that provides digital and analog out."

If the fact that this Olive is taking aim at Sonos isn't already apparent, the One will also be designed with multiroom Wi-Fi streaming in mind (with the purchase of additional units, of course) via its built-in dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Need more? In addition to the touch screen, Olive says the One's display -- which features wide-ranging search options through Olive's "Music OS" and the ability to play YouTube videos -- will also be viewable on Miracast-compatible TVs. (How that works -- and if there would be any TV-based control options -- remains a bit unclear.)

If you're not standing near the One's touch screen, you can also opt to use the free iOS or Android control apps for smartphones or tablets. Here, though, it seems like Olive has its work cut out: current user reviews on the iOS app indicate that it's not up to snuff.

Rounding out the Olive's bag of tricks: the device is slated to be hand-built in San Francisco.

Buy in early on Indiegogo
What would a new product announcement be without a crowdsourcing component? Olive's got that covered, too: Interested audiophiles can get in on the Olive One train early at Indiegogo. In addition to discounted early orders, you can also provide comments and feedback on the product, which Olive may incorporate before it's ultimately released -- currently scheduled for July 2013. At the time of this writing, the funding campaign was already more than $33,000 toward its ultimate goal of $200,000. The funding drive closes on February 1, 2013."

Does it mean that the Connector Box is an add-on cost? Meaning additional to the $399?

New options always come on time... ;D

$399 will be fair enough if its of good quality rather than buying a dying/dead technology... hehe

Shipping is at end September to early October. The reason for charging the card is so that your unit would be among those shipped first.

If you don't agree to having your card "pre-charged", your unit will be shipped sometime November.

This was in the email I received last Saturday.

^ I read that 04HD have an input via coaxial so it can act as an external DAC..so if you have an external source that has a digital out (coaxial) you may be able to use 04HD..

I know olive can be connected via lan/wifi..o if you have music files from your network I think it would be able to play those..if that is what you mean by external source..

the shipping date is moved again..there are a lot of changes, but for the better..

here is what I received from the status update..

The Olive ONE has a single body die-casted aluminum enclosure, with a beautiful anodized finish and glossy glass touch-screen surface.

Olive ONE sports a user installable hard drive. Making the hard disk drive user installable involved solving a few design challenges. The hard drive will now reside in a small compartment on the underside of the ONE.

hard drive, now in a small compartment
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee314/disturbed743483/HDD_compartment.png)

As discussed in our last update email, we added premium-grade connectors directly to the Olive ONE, eliminating the need for the Olive PAC.
premium-grade connectors

Notice something? We have added Gigabit Ethernet to the Olive ONE! Many of you requested Ethernet connectivity during the Indiegogo campaign, but we were unable to add it due to the limitations of the Marvel processor used in the original design.

ONE will now come with a brand new Freescale processor with significant performance benefits:

The new Freescale processor shows significant increases
The new Freescale processor shows significant increases in navigation performance. Browsing through music libraries and transitions are now much more smooth and fluid. Additionally, video playback capability (e.g. for YouTube playback) improves considerably.

The change to a new processor is of course a major challenge, but the porting of our software has so far showed no major complications. Nevertheless, we want to communicate clearly that we still have not ported all of the software, and there might be unforeseen delays that can push the product delivery into November, which would be the worst case scenario.

They just recently added an ethernet port ..... saw it in facebook.  Look for their facebook page

Mukhang di pa sila tapos mag modify dahil nakikita nila ang competition and their original concept is already becoming obsolete.  Dumadating na ang DSD capability.  Baka isingit pa nila yun, eh baka di na makapag mass produce yan ......  Be patient na lang ..... good luck.
Title: Re: Olive ONE
Post by: disturbed on Oct 16, 2013 at 04:57 PM
^ actually final na sir ang features...no DSD capability yan I am pretty sure..they can't just change the DAC in a fly..the initial target market for this is not really hardcore audiophiles..also they added digital out so if somebody wants to plug their favorite DAC..I am not sure what do you mean the original concept is already becoming obsolete?
Title: Re: Olive ONE
Post by: JoeyGS on Oct 16, 2013 at 05:34 PM
Well... maybe wrong choice of words..... but originally they only wanted it to be simple as plug and play.  Plug in your hard disk and play your music with remote control.  Later they added a lot of features due to the demand of the people who supported the idea.  And I would think they had to give in to the requests as a lot of new products came in with better and/or more features.  It's quite been quite a long time and they have not yet shipped the final product.

With the current configuration with all the additional features, i think its cool.

^ yeah its nearing one year or has it been one year since the campaign started..it was really meant to be an all-in-one device..but majority want some flexibility that is why additonal outputs were requested..hopefully in the end it will deliver.

Latest email..

We are excited to announce that we have just received a small batch of production units of the new Olive ONE, and the first shipment is scheduled to go out to our customers in December.

Next Steps
Shipping of the Olive ONE will happen in several stages. The first shipment in December will go out to a small number of customers who have volunteered to test the ONE thoroughly and work with us to get the software through the home stretch. Although we've already tested ONE with a wide range of different phones, network equipment and UPnP sources, there is no substitute for a "real" market test to ensure compatibility in various environments and settings.

Since testing will require some technical background, an ideal volunteer will have a good understanding of IT and will have owned a networked music player, such as a Logitech Squeezebox, in the past. To participate as a testing volunteer, please fill out our short questionnaire. If you're selected as a volunteer, we will reach out to you with a confirmation of your participation.

Once we have received adequate test feedback and implemented improvements, we will send the remaining Olive ONE orders. Currently, we estimate that the testing and implementation phase will take about 4-6 weeks after the volunteers receive their products. This means that all customers will receive a fully tested and approved Olive ONE in the first quarter of next year. The first big shipment, estimated for end of January, will go out to Indiegogo backers, who have already prepaid for the product. If you want to be included in this shipment, please click here and provide your authorization.

In closing, we at Olive want to thank you again for your continuous support of this project. Since the initial start of the Indiegogo campaign, we have come a long way and made some considerable changes to customize the ONE to your liking. We regret the delay in shipping these early units of the Olive ONE, but we are committed to releasing a robust product incorporating pre- and post-production customer input. We made improvements to the ONE’s feature mix based on that input, and feel the ONE is much better thanks to your help.

As always, please feel free to simply reply to this email with any questions or concerns. We appreciate your feedback and will get back to you promptly.

Hello everyone,

The first batch of products have been assembled, packaged and shipped to our customers. After the many delays we understand that everyone is eager to get their ONE quickly and we are currently optimizing assembly processes to maximize output and ship as many products as quickly as possible.

The actual shipping date of your ONE will depend on the date & time in which we have received your original order. To be fair with everyone we are shipping orders prioritized by order date, so customers that have ordered early in the campaign will get their products first. You will receive an email with a tracking number once your ONE has shipped.

My One arrived 2 weeks ago so here are some initial impressions.

The packaging is simple and neat, with ample protection for the beautiful device.  Did I say beautiful?  It's gorgeous actually, a really cool looking piece of equipment, which has very high WAF (for the family man).  But to others, it looks like a glorified digital clock  ;D

Booting up..

The other contents of the package consists of the custom 3.5mm-RCA analog/line-out cable, a wifi antenna (for extending range), and the power supply (auto volt).  It also contains a simple user guide on setting up the One .  You may want to check the guide online for more updates/information (https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/200090595-User-Guide) (http://(https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/200090595-User-Guide))

3.5mm - RCA
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee314/disturbed743483/P6290121.jpg)

I only have a simple network at home and don't have servers or NAS, so my contents for the One will be purely local (internal HDD).  Installing the 2.5" (laptop HDDs) into the One is fairly easy.  Olive have already put up the instructions here (https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200768285-How-do-I-insert-my-own-hard-drive-) (http://(https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200768285-How-do-I-insert-my-own-hard-drive-)).  Also, there is another way to share the content to the One, that is through bluetooth.  Also, forgot to mention, it already has internet radio,  however spotify, youtube and other music content sources/services support is not yet available but it is already on the works.

The One have an array of outputs to deliver your music.  It has a speaker out, analog out and a digital out.  You will need banana plugs if you want to connect the One to your speakers.  Olive has provided a custom 3.5mm to RCA cable if you want to utilize the line out and use your existing amplifier.  Also, you can opt to use the digital out if you want to use your external DAC.  The digital out is through a coaxial (RCA).  If you notice, the one also has a USB port, which is currently being developed to also stream digital data.  This is great if your external DAC only accepts USB input.

Rear ports

Here are the specifications of the DAC and amplifier inside the one taken from their site.
HD Digital-Analog-Converter
Based on Burr-Brown PCM5142:
32-bit/384kHz
Dynamic Range / SNR: 112 dB
THD+N: - 93 dB @ - 1 dBFS (Typical)
8X oversampling

Dual HD amplifiers and DSP
2x 32W/channel into 8 Ohm, high-efficiency (92%)
1 amp per channel provides perfect channel separation
DSP with Olive's patent-pending SMART technology

One thing that jumps on you when you start up the One, is probably the quality of the screen/display.  I think it is not on par with the quality look and feel of the One.  But I have no qualms, if it is not IPS or AMOLED and have a retina display.  I have joined the funding because I was looking for a music player where I can browse my music collection without using an external monitor/display/tv and which also looks good or looks like a piece of hifi equipment.  So the display of the One, is sufficient for that purpose.  A good UI is just a bonus for me, since I am used to playing by browsing into folders.

My initial experience was not overly positive, but the issues I encountered were mitigated with the help of the Olive support team.  Looking at the initial reviews from fellow One's owners, I think I just got it bad, as most of them shared their great experience with their unit.  Anyway, after completing the initial setup and tinkering the settings to suit my preferences and loading some music into the One, it's time for some listening sessions.

I only have a simple 2 channel audio setup due to some limited listening space in the apartment.  See my equipments below.

Speakers: Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniv Edn (6Ω/86db) in solid wood stands w/ spikes
DAC/Preamp: Emotiva Stealth DC-1 (24/192;Dual fully differential AD1955 DACs)
Amplifier: Emotiva A-100 Mini-X (50 watts @8Ω/80 watts @4Ω)

To be continued.

I have been busy and forgot to update this thread.  Actually, I held off my review due to an issue with the Olive One's digital out because I was planning to do a comparison review on the One's different outputs.
Luckily, due to my persistence plus patience and with the support of Olive and of Emotiva, we got the digital out working.  Hat's off to Emotiva for lending a valuation unit of a DAC/Pre to Olive so they can resolve the issue.  Lot's of Olive One's owners are happy now because of this.

Because of the issue, I have been using the Olive One's line out and my DAC/Pre acted only as a pre-amp from the start.  So I am very familiar with the Olive One's DAC capability.
I will post my thoughts again on this matter because I was just so happy that the digital out is already working lol.

Will post some more pics later.

Again kudos to Emotiva and Olive!

Bookmarked!

Good specs, na-try mo na ba sir na i-plug yung Wharfedale Denton mo sa speaker output ng Olive One?

I'm wondering with the internal amplifier's performance:
Dual HD amplifiers and DSP
2x 32W/channel into 8 Ohm, high-efficiency (92%)
1 amp per channel provides perfect channel separation

looks good, RMS value po ba yung 32w/ch?

First my preference..
I am more of a detail freak and treble head (if there is such a term) and I prefer my bass that is dry, fast and punchy.  I mostly listen to all kinds of rock and love listening to vocals both male and female which is why most of the time I prefer acoustic and live recording versions.

so now that is out of the way..

Me, I really didn't bother to use the speaker out of the Olive One since I use a separate amp for it to drive my bookshelf speakers and because I doubted the internal amps will drive the speakers that I have.  Well I tested it last night (due to request by kranoz) and was amazed how it sound, I didn't really expect it.  With my limited listening space, I am only at about 50-55% of the volume slider for my normal listening level which is already loud for my wife.  I can only imagine how more sensitive speakers will perform with the Olive One, full range speakers come to mind.  What a very simple set up that would be!

I am randomly playing familiar tracks on the Olive One (list below).
Seven Mary Three - Lucky (Acoustic/Live)
Dave Matthews Band - Belly Belly Nice (Live)
                               Gaucho (Live)
                               Sweet (Live)
Alanis Morisette - Forgiven (Acoustic)
Fall Out Boy feat Eric Clapton - Save Rock N Roll
Damien Rice - Volcano
                    Blower's Daughter
Sarah Mclachlan - Angel (Acoustic/Live)
Metallica - Unforgiven (S&M)
Disturbed - Indestructible
Pearl Jam - Rearview mirror
Students of Aaron o Keefe - 42 (by Tool)

The details and micro details are present and the sound has good tonal balance with a slight emphasis on the mids.  The lower frequencies do not smear the mids and highs but is slightly less controlled and has a bit of bloom to my ears (compared when using the mini-x + dc-1).  This is ofcourse YMMV!  It is really hard to find fault on its sound reproduction and will basically come down to taste and synergy with the speaker pairing.  It is really a great all in One solution for your music needs. :D

I will just post some more review ramblings..hopefully at the weekend.

My friend encountered a bug with his Olive One... when he chose "Genre", his Olive played 36 songs and then stopped and would not play the remaining 170++ songs.

He had to turn it off as it hanged on him.

I tried doing the same and could not get the error to re-occur. I'm thinking it could have been caused by a power spike or fluctuation (just a guess).

Anyway, he has reported the problem to Olive and they are investigating.

Hello everyone,

Olive One just released software .30, which adds a range of enhancements and new features such as easy access to the track list in the album cover view and a new advanced caching routine for UPnP sources.
