Title: Netflix on Roku or Chromecast
Post by: shauntot on Oct 09, 2013 at 09:19 AM
Hi all!

I wanted to ask if there are other Netflix subscribers here. I've just subscribed to Netflix yesterday, using vpn on an ipad and an android tablet. Ok siya, grabe sa dami ng pwede panoorin, I spent around 30 mins. just browsing through their catalog. The TV series are a hit with the wife and the kids. I like that you can specify user profiles for your account which allows me to have separate accounts for myself, wife and kids. The kids profiles have been set up to just stream kid-friendly tv series/movies.

For those who are curious on what Netflix has to offer:

They currently have 2 plans, a USD$8/month which allows unlimited HD streaming on 2 devices at the same time

and a USD$12/month plan for which allows 4 devices at the same time.

Both of these plans are available to try for 1 month free trial period. You need to sign up with a credit card (local card will work) and if you're not satisfied before your trial ends, you can simply cancel your subscription on their website.

Now I am also eyeing to get a Roku 3 to be able to load netflix on my TV so I'm not restrained to watchin on my laptop or ipad. I'm also looking at Chromecast which is the same thing as Roku, but you have to use an ipad/iphone/android to control it like a remote.  Roku is USD99 while Chromecast is only $35.

Still thinking which one to get. I think with a combo of Netflix+torrents+FTA (free-to-air local channels) - I might just cancel my skycable hd subscription, parang mas mura pa babayaran ko ata.

Any other Netflix/Roku users in PDVD that would care to share their experience?  :)

I'd love to try it but it's not available in this country.  I have Netflix on PS3 and WDTV Live.

I subscribed for 3months since yun ang plan ng VPN ko. But had it disconnected na din. At first I was overwhelmed with the amount of titles available. but after a while I realized that most of their movies are already in my library. Ang nag enjoy ng todo dun ang anak ko since most of his favorite cartoons are available. It's good for those na wala pang video library at di mahilig mag DL since their library is not that updated.

Since naka VPN ka na din you can sign up for Amazon Prime it's also free for 1 month. They also have a ton of movies and music as well. Some music you can download for free. Might as well do some shopping as well...

Enjoy

sickboy - yes it's true, netflix isn't available for us in the PH since it detects our PH IP address. Titor is right, sign up for a vpn account (meron mga paid, meron din free)

Here's a list I found - http://vpncreative.net/vpn-providers/

It was on an HTPC connected to the PJ. Naka connect din sa ipad pero I can only use 1 device at a time. Tried to jailbreak my router but bricked it instead, so di ko na inulit.

I am also a netflix subscriber since April.

I'm using an HTPC, and Chrome or Firefox browsers to play it.

I don't use a VPN, instead I just installed an extension on both Chrome and Firefox that will let you watch netflix or hulu even outside of US.

I don't know how the extension does it, but it works flawlessly.

By the way the extension is "MediaHint".

When playing on my android tablet, I use an app called "Hola", and it lets me watch netflix on my tablet.

Interesting... how do you install that?

here's the link for the extension:

https://mediahint.com/

To install on Chrome:
Download mo lang sir yung file, I think it's a .crx file.

Then go to settings>>Extensions. Once there just drag the crx file to the browser.

Sa Firefox mas madali. Click mo lang yung add to firefox, then youre good to go.

Since you're using htpc like me, makaka save ka ng $7 for the vpn.

My son watches everyday and so far no issues since day 1.

Thanks for the MediaHint tip, Sir. I'm considering starting with this one just to try Netflix out. Question though, assuming I want to use my PS3 as a Netflix player, I understand I would need to get a VPN plan as well. I saw the link below being promoted by Google Ad. It's a one time payment of $39.. It also mentioned an additional 4.99/month payment on top of the $7.99/month Netflix plan for "HSS Security connection pass subscription" which they claim is required for Netflix. Has anybody heard of this? Any thoughts and possible recommendations? tyia

Not sure about that sir. But when I was connected to a VPN (stongvpn) I paid about $7/month pero for 1 pc only. I can configure my ipad/iphone to use the vpn settings. But I can only use 1 device at a time. Pero I tried sa PS3 but did not work. According to their tech support you need a WRT router for the PS3 to be enabled or simult usage.

Update lang, got my Roku last Monday, been watching Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon Instant video, etc. The Roku has a lot of channels, sa sobrang dami, I find that I've been browsing the catalog a lot.

I tested the quality with 4 simultaneous netflix streams playing on 4 devices (Roku, Wii, Android and Ipad) and all 4 streams were playing in HD.

I still have a couple of weeks left in the netflix and amazon trial, and a few days in the hulu+ left. I suppose with the combination of the Roku, torrents and an external tv antenna (for local channels, local news), I can finally cut my skycable subscription :)

Hi sir, question po. Does Roku work like an NMT? straight to the TV already? or it has to be connected to the PC as well? how did you bypass the Phils. IP address when streaming Netflix via this device? Thanks in advance sir. Thinking of doing the same thing. Instead of subscribing to a cable provider, pa ugrade na lang ako DSL and go through this route. I tried kasi yung mediahint via Firefox and it worked!
Title: Re: Netflix on Roku or Chromecast
Post by: shauntot on Oct 16, 2013 at 02:08 PM
hi kidlat - yes, the roku is like an NMT, it's hooked up via HDMI to the TV directly, you'll only need the PC to set it up initially tapos that's it, standalone device na no need for the PC anymore.

I'm using a paid DNS service (Unotelly) which allows me to have a US IP address. It's not like VPN (ie strongvpn) because it's faster by not having a middleman which cuts the dsl speed a lot. I have the same thinking as you probably,  I'd rather pay monthly for Netflix ($8/month) + DNS service  ($4/month) which still comes out cheaper than my current skycable hd plan

Sir anong router gamit mo? did you have to configure/jb it? When I was using a VPN used an entry level Belkin pero it did not work. tutorials on how to jailbreak it but i bricked it. According to the VPN provider dapat daw WRT router and they actually have a list of preferred brands/models.

Thanks for the inputs sir. May i ask what is your current internet plan? Will the 8mbps plan of PLDT be enough to stream HD content from Netflix?
Title: Re: Netflix on Roku or Chromecast
Post by: shauntot on Oct 17, 2013 at 10:30 AM
titor - i have a dlink router (http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-600-wireless-n-150-home-router) that I flashed years ago to run DD WRT instead. Check the DD WRT website here (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database) to see if your Belkin can be flashed to DD WRT. If no DD WRT, try Tomato.

I would not advise to use VPN as my research shows that VPN slows the internet speed a lot. I have a 3.5mbps plan, speedtest.net result is accurate to 3.5mbps, but when I used VPN, it became around 1.2mbps only.  Your mileage may vary though, in my case, DNS is the way to go.

kidlat - wow kainggit ka naman, 8mbps :) in my case, I only have 3.5mpbs plan and it's capable of streaming HD from Netflix to 4 devices simultaneously. So I'm guessing your 8mbps plan will be more than enough :)

Wow! PLDT ba provider mo sir? i'm also at 3mbps pero hirap yung pag stream ng Netflix sa PC ko. I guess the next step is to get a Roku. You bought this abroad sir? or would you know any local stores selling this?

kidlat - I thought you were on an 8mbps plan :) Not sure why hirap nag Netflix sa PC mo, I actually tried Netflix on my laptop first before buying the Roku, syempre sayang naman kung hindi kaya ng internet ko yung HD streaming content.

I had a family member that was coming home here buy it in BestBuy for me. You can also order from Amazon and have it shipped here. Not sure if there are local stores selling it.

Anong sports channel makuha mo using Roku and free ba? NBA? Un HD ng Roku ay comparable ba PQ sa Cignal or Sky?

crazyhog - there's MLB, Hockey, UFC, football, fishing, etc. No free NBA unfortunately, although there's NBA League Pass kaso medyo pricey. I don't watch a lot of NBA so it wasn't a deciding factor for me, it might be for some though.

The PQ of the HD channels are clear, if not clearer than my SkyHD. Not sure about Cignal, naka Sky kasi ako. I'll try to take a pic tonight of a show and post it here.

kiwimig - aside from Netflix, Amazon and HuluPlus, almost all the channels you see in the screenshot are free. There's hundreds of channels (if I'm not mistaken currently at 700+ channels) that are available, however I didn't add them all kasi sa Netflix pa lang, ubos na oras ko kakapanood hehe. Here are the channels available - http://www.roku.com/channels/#!browse

Yes I can stream wireless from my PC to the Roku using the Plex channel (free)

@weng - for dns, you can try unotelly.com (it's what I'm using) so far no problems whatsoever. as for a 2mpbs link, I think it's enough, but that would be the minimum ata for proper HD streaming. What you can do to try it out kung kaya ng speed mo is to get the Mediahint extension for chrome/firefox - https://mediahint.com/

tapos subscribe ka to netflix (free for 1 month) so you can check if ok yung streaming quality. If you find the quality is good after your trial expires, then you can subscribe na :)

Same experience here. Ever since my 2 kids discovered power rangers on netflix last week, wala ng ibang pinanood. Nagdownload ako ng episode ng Bioman sa youtube and showed it to them and told them na yan ang original ginaya lang ng power rangers. Sabi ba naman sakin ng daughter ko, bakit daw may square things on the screen??? (pixelized kasi low quality yung bioman from youtube hehe)

hmm meron palang ganitong thread dito, sali ako hehe.

my current setup is i have a Roku 3 na pinabili ko sa sister ko sa states, then meron akong linksys e1200 dd-wrt router. ang gamit kong VPN ay dalawa, isang unotelly dns at astrill vpn. ginagamit ko ang astrill sa mga cases na di kaya ng unotelly gaya nang downloading ip restricted games on my xbox360 and services like popcornflix channel in roku (unotelly dns does not support this). well anyway, i am a subscriber of netflix, hulu plus, and amazon prime. unlike the first 2, amazon can only be paid at an annual fee, no monthly option. my current isp is pldt fibr 8mbps so you can imagine how fast and clear the streaming is. i can watch hulu plus on my roku, my son watching netflix on the ipad, and my daughter watching dora on amazon prime in her nexus 7 all at the same time without hiccup, plus my wife doing youtube on her iphone as a bonus, yeah i experimented it hehe. quality of videos are mostly HD. netflix excels more in movies and recent us tv shows, hulu excels on current tv shows in us and uk, amazon on the other hand excels on tv episodes for kids and some quality 90's movies.

i also own a chromecast, i bought it from a seller in tpc, i usually use chromecast in watching youtube videos since roku doesn't fully support youtube. i can also watch hulu plus and netflix on it.

i made a roku thread on tpc and if you are a member there you can also chat there http://www.tipidpc.com/viewtopic.php?tid=287295 (http://www.tipidpc.com/viewtopic.php?tid=287295)

Question po. I already subscribed to Unotelly and have been watching Hulu on my PC, while waiting for my Roku. Pansin ko lang pag nanuod na sa Ipad ang anak ko nagbu buffer na yung sa PC. And to think i just upgraded to 8mbps. When i do speed test accurate naman sya sa 5 to 6 mbps. Reading shauntot's post. Nasa 3mbps lang sya and still can accomodate simultaneous streaming. Any suggestions? Im using a Dlink DIR 615 router. Do i need to change my router?

xxadonisxx - use twonky for youtube on your roku. get the twonky channel from the channel store, tapos download the app on your ipad/android. works exactly the same as chromecast, so no need for chromecast. been using it since day one of my roku, was planning to get a chromecast kasi solely for youtube, nakatipid ako ng konti :)

Hi!

I got chrome and roku 3 after I came back from the US the other week. Is there someone who can be friendly enough to point to me the quick and dirty way of setting this up immediately since I know I also need a VPN type service for this to work properly, right?

On the other hand, how do you go about for any subscription based fees for the US channels?

Thanks in advance!

Title: Re: Netflix on Roku or Chromecast
Post by: shauntot on Nov 19, 2013 at 01:55 PM
Jackryan - for your roku3 and chromecast to work here, you'll need a US based IP, but you need to change your DNS on your router as well.

Go to unotelly.com and sign up for a free 1 week trial, once you sign up, look for the insrtructions on how to change your DNS on your router in their FAQ. Most branded routers are there already with instructions on how to change your DNS, if you're not familiar with your router.

After that, connect your Roku wired or wirelessly to your router and you should be able to add the subscription based US channels like netflix, hulu, etc.

If you've already connected your roku to the internet, it will already have a Philippines-based IP so even if you use the above steps, it won't work. You'll need to reset to factory settings first, then do the steps I mentioned above.

To factory reset your roku, simply go to settings and at the bottom of the list is factory reset. Before you do your factory reset, make sure your roku is not connected to your network. Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything else.

Hi sir. Yes im only using unoDNS. At first i thought the Mediahint is clogging the bandwidth so i tried using Chrome, but same result. Ano kaya ang problema nito sir? My router has been very dependable, i doubt it is the problem. Or is it my PC?

xxadonisxx - use twonky for youtube on your roku. get the twonky channel from the channel store, tapos download the app on your ipad/android. works exactly the same as chromecast, so no need for chromecast. been using it since day one of my roku, was planning to get a chromecast kasi solely for youtube, nakatipid ako ng konti :)
yes alam ko yun, kaya nga nasabi kong not fully supported ng roku ang youtube, but there are workarounds. pero mas maganda pa din kung i fully support na ng roku ang youtube para all in streaming sevice na siya, smahan na din sana ng airplay hehe

Naka unodns ka tapos sabay pa sa mediahint sir? Kung naka unodns na, no need for mediahint.

2 things I would ask you to check:

1) You also mentioned that nangyayari lang yung buffering on your PC when your daughter's ipad is streaming at the same time. I would highly doubt this is the case, pero wala ka naman sigurong na set na QOS sa router mo to allow your daughter's ipad traffic to hog use up most of your bandwith right?

2) You said in your post you were streaming Hulu and when your daughter's ipad is streaming your PC starts to buffer. Is it also the same case when you stream Netflix? Take note that netflix might not buffer kasi it has adaptive streaming like youtube, wherein it downgrades the picture quality a bit instead of buffering so you can still watch the movie without pauses, albeit the quality is a bit degraded.

Hi guys.Do you think it is possible to configure Smart LTE to work  with unotelly dns or astrill vpn?  I'm interested in this and I was thinking to get LTE instead of the more expensive fiber if it's possible.

Not sure how Smart LTE works, but if you are able to change its DNS settings, then yes I'm assuming it will work.

Thanks for the reply. To answer no. 1, i have no idea how the QoS works :) i basically connected all wires when i bought the router and worked automatically. To answer no. 2, i havent spent time on Netflix, because Hulu seems to stream better and more updated shows, but i will try if the same issue comes up with Netflix.

Anyway, im just waiting for my Roku. Hopefully today or tomorrow i will be able to set it up. Will give feedback right away :) Perhaps this will no longer be an issue if streaming is thru Roku already.

Did you set the DNS IP addresses from Unblock-US on the main router (for example if PLDT DSL, from their router device) or your own wireless router (ie. Cisco Linksys, DLINK or others) to get this working?

Netflix and Unblock-US subscriber here for about 3 months now and so far everything works great. I can watch netflix on my laptop, ipad and on our apple tv (good alternative to roku esp since mukang mas available sha dito). Have a globe 5mbps dsl connection, hd naman ang streams on all devices.

Didnt bother changing the dns settings on the router. Instead, i plugged the dns settings on the different devices.

Just sharing.

I used to own both,...
I used Netflix before, which was $7.99 a month, ng dumalang ang bagong movies,
we decided to end our subscription,...
I had Roku then before, which was used a player ng Netflix ko din,
and I tried other streaming provider too via Roku, I ended up giving away my player to a friend,
hindi ko din nagagamit kasi, mas madalas kong nagagamit ang media player ko (WDTV)...
If you love old movies, old TV series, well, masusulit ang Netflix for you,...

I'm planning to get apple tv and netflix (via vpn) too. But my vpn subscription is vpnunlimited which i got for a small fee na lifetime plan. The thing is, it will only work pala sa apple tv via airplay mirroring. So baka kuha na lang ako ng ibang subscription for vpn like unotelly or unblock-us. My question is, is there a way to make it automatically connect to the vpn when i use netflix/hulu in the apple tv? or will it be always turned on in my router?

I recently purchased an Amazon Fire TV stick and I find it efficient. I even got the local version of HBO GO to work on the Fire TV stick by sideloading the app in it so I am able to watch HBO GO on my TV.

Hopefully in the future iflix would have the Amazon fling feature so I can cast iflix content to the Fire TV stick. Sideloading the android app doesn't work.

8mbps will be enough for HD streaming on Netflix. Maybe it'll drop down to 480p and could suffer from a few hiccups as well especially during peak hours or if another person is downloading something else, but it can reach HD streams.

I have a Fire stick and it's easy to configure and run Kodi on it. If I remember correctly, the Roku has Google's DNS hard coded in it. You'll have to do necessary steps to have the Roku block the hard coded DNS.

By the way, i understand that we only have the 7% of the overall content just tomkeep the cost low.
