Matt Ryan Cast as John Constantine in NBC Series
Feb 21, 2014

Deadline is reporting that Welsh actor and former "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior" star Matt Ryan has been cast as the title character in NBC's upcoming pilot "Constantine." Little is known about the plot for the upcoming series, but the site also mentioned the following, which gives us a glimpse of what to expect: "When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her."

Written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) and Daniel Cerone ("The Mentalist"), NBC has officially ordered a pilot for "Constantine," which will be helmed by The Descent's Neil Marshall.

Created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette and John Totleben, John Constantine, a roguish magician/detective/conman, first appeared during the author's run on "Swamp Thing" in 1985, receiving his own series, "Hellblazer," under DC's Vertigo imprint in 1988. That book ran for 300 issues before it was relaunched in DC's "New 52" continuity as "Constantine" with a younger take on the antihero. It's speculated that the latest incarnation of the character will serve as the building blocks for the TV series.

Keanu Reeves previously played the character on the big screen in Warner Bros.' 2005 release Constantine, which was directed by Francis Lawrence ("The Hunger Games" films).

NBC’s Constantine Adds Three More to Its Cast
Mar 05, 2014

Deadline reports that three more have joined the cast of NBC's "Constantine" pilot including Lucy Griffiths ("True Blood"), Harold Perrineau ("LOST") and Charles Halford ("True Detective").

Griffiths will play the role of Liv, the daughter of a former friend of Constantine's who is targeted by demons. Her character is described as "an offbeat young woman tired of her ordinary life who comes to discover that she has the ability of seeing the supernatural world among us, which makes her a key player in the battle between good and evil."

Perrineau will play the role of Manny, Constantine's literal guardian angel with the ability to step into other people's bodies, a similar ability to that of DC's Deadman, while Halford will take on the role of Chas, who is described as Constantine's "oldest friend and staunch companion."

David Goyer Talks Constantine, Says Shooting Begins this Week
Mar 10, 2014

With much of the cast already assembled for NBC's upcoming pilot "Constantine," writer/executive producer David Goyer has confirmed in an interview with I Am Rogue that production will begin on the pilot this week.

"We start shooting next week," he said. "We only have four series regulars but we've cast them all now. I'm proud to say that Constantine is actually being played by a British guy. Matt Ryan and he is going to have blond hair."

When asked if John Constantine, a notorious chain smoker, would partake in his old habits on the series, Goyer replied:

"That's a tricky one on network TV. We're negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material than the film did. Even though the film was interesting."

Goyer went on to say that the series would be more in line with the "Hellblazer" version of the character that fans already know and that plans are being made for additional DC characters to appear should the pilot be picked up for series.

"Quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC universe, should we move forward, will be showing up…..I think we would try to bring in some of the other occult figures."

Constantine Gets Series Order at NBC
May 8, 2014

In the wake of Fox's "Gotham" pick up and the very recently announced "The Flash" and "iZombie" series orders at The CW comes a fourth DC Comics-based TV pilot which has been brought up to series - "Constantine"  at NBC. Here's their official description of the series:

Based on the wildly popular comic book series "Hellblazer" from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, "Criminal Minds") specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, "True Blood"), the daughter of one of Constantine's oldest friends, he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he'll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it's revealed that Liv's "second sight" – an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences – is a threat to a mysterious new evil that's rising in the shadows. Now it's not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there's hope for him and his soul after all.

Also starring Harold Perrineau as the angel Manny and Charles Halford as Constantine's friend Chas, "Constantine" is executive produced by Daniel Cerone ("The Mentalist," "Dexter") with David S. Goyer (Man of Steel). Cerone wrote the pilot episode which was directed by The Descent's Neil Marshall.

John Constantine Won't be Lighting Up Any Cigarettes in the TV Series
Source: Collider
June 30, 2014

One of the many identifying character traits of occult master John Constantine is his notorious chain smoking, and even though executive producer David Goyer said there was a chance we would see it on the upcoming TV series, director Neil Marshall (who helmed the pilot) says it's not happening.

"It's the one thing, a compromise I guess," the director said in an interview with Collider. "On network, it's the one thing you can't smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We're working around that. We're trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We'll see."

He went on to add that their intention with the series was to be as scary as possible, which only made the smoking ban more maddening.

"The intention is to be as dark and scary as possible with the show. And that was our whole kind of plan going in, to make it scary. So we're going to explore all kinds of things. But the smoking is very frustrating. Who knows where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go? There's still lots of options."

From The Hollywood Reporter:

'Constantine's' Lucy Griffiths Exits NBC Drama
July 10, 2014

NBC's rookie comic drama Constantine is parting ways with its female lead.

True Blood alum Lucy Griffiths has exited the network's adaptation of Hellblazer after the show's creators opted to move in a different direction, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Constantine centers on master of the occult John Constantine (Criminal Minds' Matt Ryan), who struggles with his faith as he is haunted by the sins of his past and is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

Griffiths played Liv, the female lead and an offbeat woman who finds herself teamed with Constantine after she is marked for death by a powerful demon. With the ability to see the supernatural world among us, she becomes a key player in the battle between good and evil. NBC will not recast the role but instead add the character of Zed, a familiar name from the Constantine books. That character, a foil for the show's title character who becomes his right-hand woman, has not yet been cast. She will appear in an early episode of the series, with additional characters from Hellblazer and the occult DC universe to be introduced later. Zed will, however, be the first to appear.

Angelica Celaya Becomes the New Female Lead on NBC's Constantine

With the pilot ready to premiere at Comic-Con International in less than two weeks, NBC's upcoming "Constantine" drama, based on the Vertigo Comics character, has replaced its female lead with Latina actress Angélica Celaya joining the cast as Mary "Zed" Martin, as confirmed on the show's Facebook page.

Celaya will replace Lucy Griffiths' Liv, who plays the female lead in the pilot, as she takes on the role of the character from the comics, an artist who joins John Constantine's battle against evil forces as well as being his lover.

he is still likeable. if it was slightly over the top, its still good to keep a English douchebag personality. the girl in the pilot was prettier but "Zed" has a hotter/sexier appeal for me.

my hopes is that it does not become much like Supernatural or Grimm and find its own niche.

I actually bought this comic when it came out. This episode was a good adaptation. I'm still wondering if they would use the story that came out with this in an episode

Constantine Officially Dead Following Search for a New Home
June 7, 2015

In early May, we learned that NBC had cancelled the DC Comics television series “Constantine.” At the time, executive producer Daniel Cerone added that the show wasn’t dead yet and that they were looking for a new home elsewhere. Sadly, that search did not have a happy ending. Cerone gave the following update on Twitter:

I promised I’d share news when I had it — sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we’re forever grateful, but those efforts didn’t pan out. I’m sorry, I wasn’t provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.

Constantine: City of Demons 4K Blu-ray

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Constantine: City of Demons. The two releases will be available for purchase on October 9.

Constantine: City of Demons has been produced in a dual format – initially as animated shorts, the first five of which appeared on CW Seed. With a runtime of 90 minutes, the feature-length Constantine: City of Demons film has over an hour of never-before-seen content including the film's thrilling climax.

Matt Ryan, who set the standard for the role of Constantine on the NBC live-action television series, returns to the famed trenchcoat in animated form – after reprising the role in both live-action (Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow) series and an animated film (Justice League Dark).
