I hope the Germans improve from their 2010 showing. It was a pretty young team then so a lot of them are back.

Bad trip lang madaling araw ang mga games.

Spain vs Netherlands in about 2 and a half hours.

This is a rematch of the finals from the last World Cup; should be a massive match.

anyway, I'm rooting for Germany, Argentina, and Netherlands this year.

But worth it, the level of play and intensity is entirely different compared to how they play in the regular leagues. Iba talaga if  playing for one,s country.
Looking forward to matches of Germany, USA, Argentina and England...
Cheers

Watched Brazil vs Croatia and later Spain vs Netherlands.  From somebody that watches football only during World Cups, here are my observations:

1.  Brazil has a young team, Neymar and Oscar are both 22, matibay sa bola yung Oscar who I think is their best player.  Si Neymar has great ball handling and speed but doesn't appear that strong physically.  Brazil's bench might lack the experience to hang with the big boys later on. And their defense is questionable.

2.  Based on their first games, both Spain and Netherlands I think are stronger than Brazil.  Both displayed exceptional ball handling skills and teamwork, Spain especially.  I think the 5-1 drubbing that Spain received doesn't reflect what a good team Spain really is.  But what a goal by Van Persie, a flying (horizontal) header off a very long pass.

Can't wait to see Messi in action.

Germany was as impressive as any team I've seen so far - confident pin point passing and the ability to transition instantly from defense to a coordinated running attack. Portugal appeared 2nd rate next to Germany.

Also got to watch Messi for the first time.  The talent is obvious - ball control, speed, a good eye for the field and accurate passing, as short and stocky as Maradona but quicker on his feet.

one of the worst performances i have ever seen.  Spain was lazy and boring.  They had no chance as soon as they went down 1-0 early in the 1st half.

Spain are out. They join an illustrious list of defending champs that made an early exit.
Practically the entire team seemed tired, probably due to a very taxing season with their clubs.
Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Post by: SiCkBoY on Jun 19, 2014 at 08:49 AM
Spain also earned the dubious distinction of making the earliest exit from a World Cup by a defending champion in history. No defending champions have ever been eliminated after only two games of the first phase.

whew... oras ng mga underdogs ngayon ah...

That's not a surprise. With the bigger teams, players are typically stars for the biggest clubs and play a lot more matches in a year than the rest.

This is why you see defending champions usually falling short at World Cups.  After winning the cup, their players become stars and are immediately snatched up by the biggest clubs, ergo, get much much busier match and media schedules.

Spain was supposed to be the exception but instead have spectacularly bombed out of this World Cup.

Not convinced by Argentina.  They were lucky to beat Iran (though Iran played really good).

Watching Germany-Ghana now.  Germany is the best team I've seen so far.  Deep bench, great defense smoothly transitioning to fast break offense, best goalie of the WC in Neuer.

Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Post by: lithium_deuteride on Jun 22, 2014 at 04:35 AM
I posted the above with the score 0-0 at halftime. Then it started raining goals, 2-2 now with 20 minutes to go. Miroslav Klose just tied Ronaldo's record for most WC goals scored. When you have a Klose and a Bastian Schweinsteiger as substitutes, you really have a deep bench.

Sounds like an exciting 2nd half.  I just caught the tail end the of 1st half before having to leave for work, with Portugal leading 1-0.  Am delighted that the USA gave them a run for their money and almost won.

Still an impressive run by the USA in probably the toughest group of the 1st round.

Messi Argentina lead Nigeria 2-1

Southpaws Messi and Di Maria are running the Nigerians ragged in this match.

Messi is now a far better free kick specialist than Beckham, even without Predators as boots. Becks can still whip crosses better, though.

Lavezzi isn't making as much of an impact as Aguero did earlier. Maybe they should have kept Tevez in the squad?

Hope to see more goals in the second half.

That will be one VERY exciting match.  The US deserved to win against Portugal, too bad it ended in a draw.  If it was not for that last minute perfect cross by Ronaldo, the US would be taking it easy now, after playing in terrible conditions, they need to rest up.

It was almost a draw.  I'd have to say, the Americans are playing way above their level.  That German team has been intact since 2010 with most of them in their prime!  I can only see the Dutch team to have the ability to challenge them at this point.  Argentina has been lucky with their draw but I feel that if they faced the same teams that the Germans did, they wouldn't be toting a perfect record.

Quite agree with your assessment.  Holland with Van Persie and Robben on the vanguard are formidable threats to even the best defense.  Robben in particular is just so darned fast he can outrun most defenders.

Most experts calling the game(ex players) are 50/50 on it.  Some say it was the right call some say it was close but should have been allowed. My own assesment of it is it slightly hit his arm making it a hand ball.  Brazil is on shaky legs all tournament.  I still have the germans and dutch ahead.  Lalo na yung germans in terms of TEAM form, not just individual.

Mexican coach freaks out again in celebration as Dos Santos gives Mexico a 1-0 lead over Holland in the 48th minute.  Netherlands, one of the tournament favorites, now on the back foot.

And Schneider equalizes on the 87th.  Momentum with the Dutch.

Damn, Holland scores on a penalty kick with 2 minutes left of stoppage time.  What a recovery by the Dutch - truly a case of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Arjen Robben made things happen for the Dutch, what a player.  Van Persie was out of sorts.

The knockout stages separate the men from the boys.  The netherlands vs mexico match needed a hydration break because of gruelling conditions.  That last penalty call was because of exhaustion, the defender got there with enough time but couldnt pull of the tackle properly, resulting to a foul in the box.

Now the tournament really begins.

what will make it hard for the french is the absence of workhorse Frank Ribery.  They have enough firepower to make it to the quarters but then that is a potential date with the Germans, and if their luck continues they go up against the host nation in the semis.

France eliminates Nigeria 2-0.  It was close until the end when Nigeria began making crucial errors including an own goal. Not convinced by the French.  Their best player in this match was the little guy Valbuena, tiny legs running around tirelessly, great assist passing and impeccable corner crosses.

Nigeria is actually pretty tough.  They wont win a cup but they will give quality (not good or great) teams a hard time.  If I'm not mistaken it took Argentina a 3rd goal just to win because the Nigerians didnt want to quit.

Looks like the German team will meet the French in the quarters as expected.  There is still 10 minutes to play in extra time but Leow has been substituting his midfielders with defensive mid fielders and has changed formation.  I think the Germans have decided to just hold on instead of going in for the kill.  Algeria is spent anyway, most of their players are starting to cramp.

what an exciting last ten minutes! just when I said the Germans would be content on sitting on the ball they break a counter attack and mount their own for a 2-0 lead, only for Algeria to get one back immediately after...Crazy final minutes but Germany through to the last eight.

Caught the last 10-minutes and the highlights.  Looked like the Algerian goalie had a busy time keeping the score nil-all in the first 90-minutes, only to give up 2 goals in extra time.

Same story with the France vs Nigeria match, the Nigerian GK keeper Enyeama (who has the most saves of the WC thus far) had another fantastic game but in the closing minutes, slowed down considerably and made a mistake that allowed an easy header by Pogba.  This was followed by a Nigerian own goal for which Enyeama was partly to blame. Pity.

Tonight will be a good set of matches. A gritty and tactically sound USA will be playing slight favorites but underperforming Belgium.

Argentina will be playing another defensive team in Switzerland. Ottmar Hitzfeld will probably park the bus later to stop Di Maria's incursions and stifle Leo Messi then try to counter. I think Iran has written the blueprint on how to play Argentina.

Interesting yung comments ng American lady that I saw sa TV a few days back. Hindi raw totoong sports ang soccer kasi it doesn't give so much emphasis on individual talent.  Masyado raw team effort tapos maraming no-point games.  Kaya hindi raw sisikat sa US despite the current World Cup fever.

Sabagay it's a sport na malaki chance ng weaker team to win.   Play defense only then 0-0 tapos penalty shoot-out.

I'm rooting for Lil Messi and the US.

Compare mo naman sa American football - stop and go, offensive team alternating with defensive team, total time ball is in play - what? 15 minutes?  Probably less.  Pretty easy way to make a living.

Back on topic, Swiss side holding its own vs Messi and company.  Great defense by both teams.  Argentina lacks depth in the mid-field, one that consistently creates opportunities for its forwards.

why should there be emphasis on individual talent if its a REAL team sport?  Didn't the San Antonio Spurs just school an in prime and obviously more talented and more physically gifted Miami Heat Big 3 with excellent team play?  I'm almost certain the lady knows little about "Football".  She can stick to watching NFL, which hardly uses the foot in tandem with the ball, and they insist on calling it football..what a joke.

ALso, I cant totally agree to weaker teams having a larger chance to win by just playing defense, although I see the logic of such an argument.  Its just that in reality, it hardly works.  There are 2 very recent examples (Bayern Munich vs Manchester United at the UEFA final eight and Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid at the UEFA semis) that even if you "park the bus" in front of the goal, the opposing team may still find a chance to score because they have no fear of a counter.

And if does result to a penalty shoot out, chances are the defensive team fielded defensive players that have little to no experience in taking penalties.

Hart did the same for the last play against Uruguay, incredibly risky because its an open goal on the other end.  But it is heartbreaking for the Swiss.

I've always thought that the Argentine team had a lucky draw to get to the knockout stages.  This game against the Swiss just showed how poor their team play really is.

USA vs Belgium now, 0-0 at 28 min.  USA being badly outplayed here. Based on what I've seen so far, they won't win this match on merit. They sorely lack good mid-fielders to get the offensive going.  Someone like Pirlo or Schweinsteiger.  Strikers need good mid-field support to get in position to strike.  Otherwise, they'll have to create their own opportunities, which is difficult unless one has Maradona or Messi levels of talent!

And thats the reason I think leaving Donavan out was a mistake.  He has the experience and his role in clubs is to be an attacking midfielder, quite similar to Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands, albeit a poor mans version of.  I just like that they play with their heart on their sleeve and leave it all out on the pitch.

The Brazilians on the other hand have been cocky and lackluster with their play.  they are getting away with pure talent and luck.

Sabella keeps changing their formation, too: 5-3-2, then 4-3-3, then 4-4-2, which is probably confusing his players.

Argentina, on paper, has the most lethal strike force of any nation, with Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, and Messi. But the tactics have been poor, and the supplier to this fab four, G@go, has also underperformed, imho.

They are very reliant on the heroics of one man. The funny thing is that these are very similar circumstances to 1986. ;D

Even with Neymar they would not have won.  I tried streaming and listened to a different set of commentators and they were saying that Germany played smart.  As soon as Mats Hummels got the goal Low switched his team's spacing.  He stuck to the same formation in case they needed to counter but opted to make the wing midfield players stand back and Lahm in particular switch from a midfield role to a right back, which is his best position.  The Brazilian defense is still spotty for me and if Low opts to start Klose again, David Luiz would have his hands full...

Robben is so fast that when he flops, he creates such a spectacle - great bait for a free kick. But who can fault him, he works hard for every one of those runs.  He energizes the Dutch offense with his dynamic plays - fantastic player.

Extra time now at. 0-0 after an all out assault on the Costa Rican goal in the closing minutes.

Argentina just lost winger di Maria.  Huge loss. It seriously changes their game plan.

Indeed. Not sure how Sabella will respond tactically, but I'm guessing Alvarez might get more minutes as a roaming midfielder. At least that's how I'd do it if I wanted a 4-3-3 formation. 8)

I have a feeling though that Sabella will stay with a 5-3-2 in the first half, which would rule out Alvarez, I think.

the Costa Rican gkeeper Navas is quite good, next only to Tim Howard of the US!

A lot of goal keepers stood out in this WC.  The Mexican one - Ochoa, the Nigerian one - Enyeama, Navas and of course Howard and Neuer. This WC also proved to be disappointing for a couple of ATG goal keepers - Iker Casillas of Spain and Gianluigi Buffon of Italy.

This edition of the world cup has been a showcase of Goalkeepers.  The numerous penalty shoot outs and clean sheets have given them an avenue to shine, more so than the more famous strikers.  Aside from James Rodriguez' one touch volley and Van Persie's superman header, I have a hard time naming a "beautiful" goal.  (Honorable mention would be David Villa's backheel goal)

Who is your player of the tournament so far?

For me, it has to be Arjen Robben with Messi second.  Robben just keeps on pushing forward, relentless and electric, creating opportunities all the time.  Messi so far is more restrained, attacking and assisting in equal measures.

So far i would have to agree with you that Robben is having an excellent world cup.  But i'm a little iffy with the great Messi, he plays so much better when he's with Barca.  I actually have Angel Di Maria a close second to Robben.  Di Maria has been running 10+k in every match until his injury.  His work rate is underrated.  Columbia's James Rodriguez would be my 3rd choice, his game has been on since the beginning of the world cup.  Too bad he was a non factor in their loss to brazil with exception to his penalty goal.

Tactics by Loew are spot on.  The Brazilians were totally exposed and put to the sword by a solid German side.

Wonder if this will be a comeback for the ages, like when Eusebio beat North Korea.

Parreira had Bebeto and Romario in '94.

Scolari in 2002 had Rivaldo, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho.

Brazil today is not even close, even with Neymar. Scolari should have played a more conservative formation against a predatory German side and waited to counter. He rolled the dice and went all out in attack and had his defense utterly exposed.

Well, i knew that Brazil defense was non existent.  More so with captain Silva out of the line up.  And Loew even made a tactical change to anticipate the Brazilian attack, he placed Lahm back at his best position of right back.  I can already smell a Netherlands-Germany final. :) Argentina has just as spotty a defense as Brazil with an even weaker offense now that di maria is injured.

I'm very interested to see what tactical adjustments LVG will be implementing tonight.  I'm quite sure he won't do a 4-3-3 because you have a player like Messi on the other side.  Maybe a 4-5-1 with Van Persie as a target man?

Sabella will probably start with a 5-3-2 out of respect for Robben's speed and then adjust later on.

In football, managers generally does not set his team based on the players in the other side but rather form the strongest 11 based on players available.  I expect both sides will not have major adjustments on their respective strategies that brought them at this stage.

The strategies definitely do not change but the tactics do.  Also, managers do tactically react to players on the other team, particularly against the likes of Messi.  LVG has done this before, too, even as early as when he managed Ajax. :)

You could tell the Argentines really willed themselves to defend through pain and suffering.

Three (Rojo, Mascherano, Zabaleta) got concussed with hits to the head and one (Biglia) playing through a very painfully injured arm.

Result: the once-prolific Dutch not having a shot on target in 120 minutes on the pitch,  even with Robben, Van Persie, and later on,  Huntelaar.

This is, arguably, a better defensive display than Germany against Brazil.

One rule change that I wish is for FIFA to penalize double or triple teaming when the ball is not within the penalty box.   Game sucks if both teams resort to avoiding defeat by stifling the best players with 2 or 3 muscular defenders than go all out to create offense for the win within regulation.  Where's the beautiful game in that?

I'm still rooting for Messi though.

One of the few players in football's history who can sow so much fear on the opposing team that they abandon their original attacking tactics just to concentrate on shackling him.

kadalasan kasi long time football fans lang ang nakakapansin nyan.  Its actually really difficult to score a goal, 1 on 1 with a keeper and some people still miss at a professional level, so when a team scores and the other team parked a bus, its really a celebration.

Messi was off target twice and higuain once with howedes missing by inches with his header and romero saving an effort from a beautiful schurrrle strike. Ironically, Argentina had more chances, but none of them were on target.  The Germans though made sure the most important statistic was theirs....Germany 1 - 0 Argentina.

Mas exciting yung regulation play as both teams were clearly practically gassed out during extra time.  Lots of intense action especially sa 1st half.  Hindi nakakurap 10-year old pamankin kong soccer fan.

I dont know about world class soccer players but the 3 times I unfortunately rode with some rather lower league footballs teams in flights over Europe..ang BABAHO...as in super BAHO...hehe...I guess that's part of their appeal aside from their tons of money.

Commentator mentioned during the game that Goetze is related to a rather prominent Goetze.  Forgot the details

Actuallymay amoy talaga ang europeans kasi sa sobrang lamig at baba ng humidity, hindi sila daily naliligo.  So medyo iba ang hygiene nila.  Actually may karamihan din akong nakitang chicks na ang gaganda pero talo pag amuyan na and mas marami pa sakin ang armpit hair!
