Marvel’s The Defenders Gets Daredevil Showrunners
April 15, 2016
Marvel Entertainment has announced that Douglas Petrie (Marvel’s Daredevil, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Marco Ramirez (Marvel’s Daredevil, Orange Is the New Black) are set to return as showrunners to the Marvel Universe for the Netflix Original Series Marvel’s The Defenders! Oscar-nominee Drew Goddard (The Martian, Lost), will also join the team as an Executive Producer.
“Doug and Marco captivated our members around the world with their continuation of the story of Matt Murdock in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we can’t wait to see how they and Drew will introduce the full Defenders team to our global audience,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.
“We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ speaks for itself,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch of humor that’s makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we’ve got a team that’s as formidable as the Defenders themselves.”
“This is the big one. Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story,” said showrunners and Executive Producers Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.”
Marvel’s The Defenders will star Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones, all reprising their roles as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, respectively.
Production is set to begin at the end of the year.

Marvel Entertainment has confirmed three more cast members for the series with Elden Henson reprising his role of Foggy Nelson from Marvel’s Daredevil, Eka Darville reprising as Malcolm from Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth from Marvel’s Jessica Jones (and the upcoming Marvel’s Iron Fist).

Continuing their tradition of a Defenders casting announcement every day this week, Marvel Entertainment has confirmed that Jessica Henwick will return as Colleen Wing for the series. She will make her debut as the character in Marvel’s Iron Fist, which premieres on Netflix on March 17, 2017.

I'm hoping this will be good, as three good actors playing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage trumps the crappy actor playing Iron Fist. Plus we have Claire Temple, Karen Page, Hellcat, Misty Knight, and Colleen Wing; that's 8 good actors and their characters vs. Finn Jones, LOL

Wouldn't it be great if the Defenders are included in Infinity War? Kahit cameo lang. There could be a scene where Thanos' minions invade Earth ala Chitauri from the original Avengers movie. Then we'll see the street level heroes (including Spider-Man!) defending Earth on the ground while The main Avengers are in space. Hayz! Wishful thinking.

Finished all 8 episodes--I actually enjoyed this more than I expected.
I didn't like the short 8-episode run and the long set-up (it took 3 episodes for the team to be established). There was also a missed opportunity to let the supporting cast shine in that episode where all of them were gathered in one place ... and it turned out to be disappointing.
Really liked the foreshadowing for the Daughters of the Dragon. O0
There's an after credits scene in the final episode, where a short teaser is shown.

They are virtually immortal and become more powerful with each resurrection--Stick said that they can only be truly killed by cutting off their head so they can't be resurrected.

I know it's all fiction, pero I can't understand why pinilit nila buhayin uli si Murdock. If they wanted him alive, they shouldn't have buried him a mile below ground. Surely there won't be any excavation that deep to look for survivors. And as Trish said, the implosion made the ground more stable, so why dig up for survivors?

Haha, Jessica Jones is such an unpretentiously cocky, alpha-female character, with a swag of a "dazed" New Yorker you don't want to mess with in the morning! In the pilot episode, I already had a good laugh with this scene:

I like the character of jessica jones and all. But is it just me but she looks like michael jackson (r.i.p.) sometimes? No offense meant.
I chose to miss out iron fist due to very, very bad reviews. And i felt i did not miss anything when i watched the defenders.

They're setting up the "Born Again" storyline from the comics for DD's 3rd season -- the "Sister Maggie" being called by one of the nuns in the final minutes of The Defenders is DD's mom.

Don’t Expect ‘The Defenders’ on Disney Streaming Service Any Time Soon
Fans of the Marvel Television series recently canceled by Netflix who hope to see the shows revived on Disney+ may be out of luck.
Sources tell Variety that the deal for the original four Marvel shows includes a clause that prevents the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation. That means that “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” — which were all canceled this year at Netflix — could not come to the Disney streaming service until 2020 at the earliest.
The chances of the shows returning either on their own or as a new installment of “The Defenders” is definitely a long shot, given the time frame. And even if they did go to Disney+ as soon as possible, they would be doing so without “Jessica Jones,” which is set to air its third season on Netflix sometime in 2019. If that show is canceled, which now seems likely but is by no means a guarantee, it could not go elsewhere until 2021.
Marvel and Netflix declined to comment.
Then there is “The Punisher,” a Marvel-Netflix show that was not part of the deal that spawned “The Defenders.” “The Punisher” stars Jon Bernthal, who first played the gun-toting vigilante in “Daredevil” Season 2 before the character was spun off into his own show. It was revealed on Wednesday that the second season of “The Punisher” will debut in January. Given that “The Punisher” did not fall under the original deal, the show’s fate beyond Season 2 is unknown at this time.

Jeph Loeb Pens Letter to Marvel Television Fans After Netflix Cancellations
Jeph Loeb, the Executive Vice President of Marvel Television, penned a letter to fans after the news that Jessica Jones and The Punisher had been canceled by Netflix, effectively bringing their corner of the MCU to a close. When adding in Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, it brings the total number of recently canceled shows to five. Six if you want to count their crossover series The Defenders. No matter how you look at it, that’s a lot of canceled TV shows.
Still, there’s talk of the characters living on either on Disney’s own streaming service, Disney+, or Hulu, which Disney owns a large share of. While that may still happen, Loeb took a minute to reflect on what had been done and thanking the devoted fans who made the dream possible.
“It had never been done before.
Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then…
…they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.
We called them The Defenders.
And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!
They said it couldn’t be done.
But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.
Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.
We loved each and every minute of it.
And we did it all for you — the fans — who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.

Despite everything, Loeb seems optimistic about future possibilities these characters could have. After all, Marvel is still a box-office powerhouse that shows no signs of slowing down, meaning its almost inevitable these characters will return — in some form, anyway.
