Title: Ang Babaeng Humayo

Lav Diaz's Golden Lion-winning film.

The Woman Who Left (Lav Diaz) **** - In 1997, a woman who has been wrongfully imprisoned for a crime she did not commit is finally exonerated after thirty years. She returns home to find her husband dead and her children gone (her daughter moved out of town, her son has disappeared). Then she plots her revenge against the man who orchestrated her frame-up. This sounds like an action film or a thriller. It is neither. It's a Lav Diaz film so it's a contemplative drama and clocking at just under 4 hours, this is one of his shorter films. However, despite it being slow paced, the time seemed to fly. It is also actress Charo Santos-Concio's first film role in decades and she nail it. It's like she never left. John Lloyd Cruz continues his transformation from rom-com heartthrob to one of Philippine cinema's more interesting actors. The film's various, complex themes will resonate with me for a while.
