Title: Does getting a CD player make sense in 2016?
Post by: MrDeckard on Nov 06, 2016 at 12:13 PM
Hi All:

Need your opinion mga master. Have a cambrige cxn (which has a superb dac) paired with a rega elex r feeding a vintage dyn contour 1.1.

Been using spotify connect and hd files from nas which kept my system simple and clean.

Becuase spotify does not really give out hidef sound, am looking at the next step as far as source is concerned.

My question is: is it still worth buying a cd player and cds if sq is my concern? Or just buy hd tracks online and feed through cxn?

Thanks!

dedicated cd player is expensive because of the dac inside but u already have superb dac. just buy simpler cd player as transport and use ur present dac via optical out.

I have a Marantz NA6005, a DAC which is connected to a Laptop but still i bought a CD Player a month ago. Why? Sarap pa din mag play ng CD's. Isa pa, sa dami kong collection ng music sa NAS it's really hard to choose which to play sa Marantz or sa PC na naka connect sa DAC.

With the CD player, i bought my fav albums. Put it in and play. So simple and easy.

If you have lots of cds, sure. Lately, I've using an old Toshiba bd player since I also have some bd audios that I listen to.

Cambridge Audio CXC is good transport. Wala sya DAC, Transport lang talaga.

Or get the Marantz CD-5005, 6005 or 6.006.. You can play it using its own DAC or make it as a transport only.

Sayang kasi kung CD Transport lang bibilhin mo, tapos mahal pa. Better yung CD Player na lang mismo at least you have the option to make it as Transport only or you can use it as is. Pag nagka issue ang DAC mo at least you can still use the CD Player

I have both, pati online streaming like Spotify Premium. may times na gusto ko lang makinig ng cd's lalo na pag tinatamad patayo tayo para mag salang ng plaka. newer songs/album usually CD ang medium ko yung mga classic rock naman ang nasa vinyl so depende lang sa mood kung alin gusto kong pakinggan. pag walang maisip na genre that's where I use streaming or may digital music player para naka random na lang yung buong flac/mp3 library ko.

The Cambridge CXN uses its own spotify connect app. Its the cxn that download/stream the songs. For some reason, the extreme or high quality streaming option menu is off when I use spotify via Cxn.

depends how how much involvement you want while listening to music. with vinyl, you have to get up every half hour or so to flip the record. no way to skip tracks form your chair if you don't dig a particular track. you also have to set up the 'table. if you find these a hassle, stick to digital.

https://support.spotify.com/us/article/What-bitrate-does-Spotify-use-for-streaming/

320 is not at all bad for casual or not so critical listening. Many of us might not hear the difference at all. But for very critical listening, digital format for me in red book quality or studio master.

Ok if money is not an issue, ill get both.  But it is. Which is better option?

It's also a matter of preference. If money is an issue, then you might want to listen to different analog system first. Madami din gastos sa analog. Albums can be very expensive lalo na kung rare, hard to find, first releases, condition of the album. There are also needles that are expensive.

But first you really have to listen to both type of systems. There is what we sometimes call the "analog" sound. It could sometimes be the small pops and ticks. The "feeling" when you imagine the needle passing through the grooves of the album and creating wonderful music. There is no better option when choosing. Nagiging better option lang siya once you've listened to both systems and decide. Hehe!

I think spotify connect does not allow you to set the audio quality.

Spotify connect setting will
Depend on the settings made on your phone settings or account settings. Extreme on phone should be extreme also on spotify connect. Afaik

You can try airplay or dlna and compare  the sq

@bongchillog, the cxn does its own streaming, not the phone or an ext device which merely acts as a remote control.  There is no documentation if the cxn streams at extreme by default. This lack of documentation may mean streaming can be throttled depending on various factors.

I think i get what bongchillog means. afaik spotify will get the account settings on spotify's database so whatever settings you put in your mobile phone/tablet/laptop it will be also the settings/configurations that cxn will use when streaming audio after you logged in.

Just to share my experience on the same dilemma I had a year ago.  I just bought a vinyl setup, and I have to admit that I loved the sound.  But a few weeks into it, I decided against it mainly due to the cost of the hobby, storage of vinyl and the hassle of playing one.  I guess for some people, this was part of the thrill.  I just wanted a clean sound that I can enjoy.  So I sold the vinyl set and shifted to a CD player in my main listening area and a Spotify headless player in our living room. No regrets :-)

I think the hassle of cleaning the records and setting up are not quite suited for some people. I also bought a vinyl set-up and received a few records from a friend but ended up selling the vinyl set-up after about a few months.

Turntables and vinyl are not for everybody.  To get sound that beats CD, you have to spend big - both on gear and records. If you're after the ultimate sound and you have the dough, vinyl is the way to go.

But come to think of it, Rene Rivo is selling a start-up vinyl setup for 40T composed of 2nd hand Jap turntable, modified Sakura tubed amp with built-in phono stage, and small PSB speakers.  Hard to believe he was able to extract the strengths and characteristics of vinyl sound with such a budget setup but he definitely did.

USB output is what you mean, right?  You want, as an option, to extract the digital signal via USB and input it in your external DAC, right?

So far, in my experience, most of the CD players good for hifi audio only has SPDIF (coaxial) or optical output. With the SPDIF (coaxial), you will still need to buy a SPDIF to USB converter so that you can have a USB output from your CD player.

Hope the above helps.

I wonder who in PDVD or Wiredstate has this.

I also wonder if this can really be at par with reel to reel or even turntable.

Post by: JoeyGS on Dec 20, 2016 at 03:08 PM
It can get close with tweaks and reclocking.  But also it is highly dependent on the quality of the external DAC.

The iFi Audio SPDIF iPurifier device can be connected to the SPDIF/coaxial output of the CDPlayer.  It re-clocks and provides galvanic isolotaion in order to improve the digital signal output before it enters into your dac.

Quote from iFi Audio:

The SPDIF iPurifier is partly a nod to past SPDIF devices including the Genesis Digital Lense. With the very latest AMR/iFI technology, it is suited to the gamut of SPDIF sources that are on the market today. It takes any barely recognisable ‘square wave’ and with REclock˚/REgenerate˚ the signal is back to a real-world, perfect wave form.

Another tweak for CD players is to upgrade the opamps.  One of my favorite opamps is the Burson opamps.

I wonder who in PDVD or Wiredstate has this.

I also wonder if this can really be at par with reel to reel or even turntable.

Just curious why many improvements or the proliferation of improvements focus on the timing only. Output signal represented by a sinusoidal waveform has both time and magnitude. And as such, improving time (or timing) only solves half of the problem. How about the other half?

One of the things I observed working as Test Engineer at Analog Devices was that the voltage reference used by our LTS 2020 tester was confined to one section of the tester main board and was inside an enclosure. The enclosure maintains a constant temperature to reduce voltage drift on the voltage reference.

In practical terms because the voltage reference is usually built-in the D/A converter IC it maybe a good idea to put a heatsink on top of this IC. This maybe overkill but looking back on the LTS 2020 tester everything there was overkill (I guess to make sure that extremely good accuracy during testing of analog IC like voltage references, D/A, A/D, multiplier etc. This way the D/A IC does not get very hot to reduce possible drift on the internal voltage reference.

So for tweaking DACs or CDPs I would suggest putting a heatsink on top of the D/A IC.

Makes me think twice again whether I should unload my Sony 400CD Changer player... but for some weird reason, I still remember the very first time I used a Sony Walkman using a Beatles cassette tape and always remember the purest joy of listening back then.

Since then, cassette tapes, cd, dvd, mini-dv and now cloud based streaming options later with all the potential techo gadget mix and enhancements, I still remember back to that first time listening to a cassette based Sony Walkman with the simplest bundled headsets.

And yes, I remember the vintage tube amp and the vinyl players and also the tricks that goes with it including the putting coins on top of the needle cartridge to beat those skips on the vinyl itself :)

it's like asking: do you still need to buy records and record player?

well stampered records are so expensive nowadays. so i continue to buy cds, this, regardless of being remastered. better records store, a self acclaimed genius of hot stampers, prefers cds than lousy pressed and 180-200g lps.

the beatles corp. continue to produce cds (and lps) of unreleased tracks. and so are the other artists.

dont worry, cdps and cds are just fine. they'll stay for a long time. even in this year of 2017.

Get Both!
But use the turntable always...mas healthy yun..

LPs sound different but not necessarily better (a lot will react)...although very soon, digital will definitely sound better already.

convenience and love for music will drive that digital tendency to prevail.  on the other end, your lust for SQ will always justify you to spend more on LPs, cartridges, etc....which at the moment, will subjectively claim to sound better than hi-res digital tracks....peace :)

I'm still of the opinion that it's still okay to buy a CD player in 2019 lol

At home everyone already uses Spotify and Netflix.

I'm the only anomaly, I think because I already like my own selection of music in CD format or whatever was downloaded.
I notice most people playing spotify just play random playlists and that's it.
