try using dvdshrink to rip and encode video files to your HD then use Nero to burn the movie.  you can download it here: http://www.dvdshrink.org/where.html. dvdshrink is a freeware so you don't have to worry about throwing away money in case it doesn't work for you. :)

here's a guide to using dvdshrink: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/.

hope you find these useful. goodluck!  8)

If I recall right, this software, as the name suggests, "shrinks" the DVD-9 data so it can fit into the more common DVD-5 blank DVD-Rs.

av_phile1 is right... it (dvdshrink) does shrink the dvd-9 media files so it would fit into the more common dvdr blank media. however, you are sacrificing the quality of the video if you're going to shrink/compress it. so if you want to preserve the video quality, use the re-author feature of dvdshrink to delete the menus or unwanted scenes and features.

Actually Ive seen rips from original DVDs to DVD-R using DVD shrink... tell you honestly it looks great! if you will be using a regular SDTV... you wont see much difference,  visual artifacts from compression are not that visible.   of course with high definition displays you might see some compression but on a regular it looks great.

Sorry for Off topic post.. but I haven't seen any Dual layer discs on sale locally..   have you bought a Dual Layer Disc?  what's it's speed and how much?  I believe if you use a Dual Layer disc, you can just DVD copy a whole dvd without using DVD Shrink...

try Nero Recode, i've been using this software for six months now and it's very good.  you can copy the whole dvd or just the movie itself minus the extras & subtitles so as not to further degrade the quality and makes your copy region-free.  it even shows you the % of compression and quality and sometimes you can get 100% and no compression for just the movie bit.  this can also burn on-the-fly meaning it reads then it writes at the same time.

it's true also, just what jpadua said, if you're viewing duplicate dvds on a HDTV set, you will notice that the picture quality is appears grainy.

if you can't get Recode, dvd-shrink+dvd-decrypter will do.

shalom :)

I just found out the best way to burn dvds and dvd-audio eighter to DVD9 and DVD5! Combo of ANYDVD and NERO ULTRA 6.6 using 8x RIDATA+R/-R DVD5 done in 5 seconds using LITE-ON dvd writter sohw-1653s08c.  Just  run ANYDVD and burn/copy orig DVD, nero will read it as if it has no region protection/CSS. No loss or anything. Same copy incase the orig got scratched or something. Better than using DVDDECRYPTER and DVDSHRINK.

Hey guys. Share ko lang ito. I tried using DVDFAB Gold last night and burned the movie U-571 in 1 is ti 1 ratio.  It can burn a dvd 9 dvd into 2 regular dvdrs. Then i tested it on my nextbase dvd player. WOW! Super linaw. Talagang original copy ang result. Highly recomended software. The problem is trial version lang ang gamit ko. I'll try to find its crack.

From DVD5 to DVD5, just like ADM202E mentioned.

From DVD9 to DVD5, you can use DVDshrink.
DVDshrink compresses the contents so they would fit in a single DVD5.

However, most orig DVDs are DVD9.
If you back-up a single DVD9 to a single DVD5, you are sacrificing quality.
To me this doesn't make sense kasi you already have the original - you shouldn't sacrifice quality.
So what I do is this:

DVD9 = DVD5 + DVD5

1. I use DVDDecrypter to transfer the DVD9 contents to harddisk.
2. Then I use DVDFab to process the contents into 2 discs.
3. Then I use Nero to burn the 2 discs.

Pros: Bitrate is not reduced. No compression done. Therefore, quality is the same as the original.
Cons: You are using 2 discs. Hence you will get the "Insert disc2" message at the end of disc1.

DVDFab splits the contents into 2 discs. The special features and bonuses of the movie are placed as much as possible in disc1. The first part of the movie is also placed in disc1. The remaining part of the movie is placed on disc2.

Why back-up (in case Edu Manzano is reading)? To protect the original discs from my 3year old boy. Nabasagan na ako ng disc dahil sa malikot kong anak.  :)

I agree with the DVD backup. Just for back up only ha.

Nice to be back here after a while.

Advice lang guys, the on of the best combo is anydvd and nero 6.6 ultra. Everything is free on the net, all you need is patience and some nice speed to download the lattest versions. DVD to harddisk backup, DVD9 to DVD5 with negligible loss, and media convertion are quick and hassle free with this combo.

I have backup my LOTR 1 to 3 extended version (12 DVDs9) to DVD5 without any problem. Media used is Ridata+R 8x for sure protection. Ok eto to protect our investments.

i have a problem burning my DVDs after ripping it.  I also used DVD Shrink at first.  When I played it in my DVD player, it read the menu, chapter search, Audio options as chapters and you cannot choose any options from those windows,  Just wait for them to play until the movie itself.  Is there anything I missed?

Also, is AnyDVD a freeware or a trialware?  What I downloaded was a 21 day trial.  Guys help...thanks in advance.

It happened to me once, when I removed all non-English subtitles in DVDShrink.  Ayaw mag-select ng options sa menu. After tracing back my DVDShrink selections, I found that I should not have removed the "Unspecified" subtitles.  Iyon pala ang nagbibigay ng menu selections (In that disc, at least).  Shrink ulit, burn ulit, then OK na.

Tama si Alfie.  DVD43 and DVDShrink combination lang, OK ka na.  DVD43 is freeware, updated pa sa bagong encryption methods, ang bilis pa.

DVD-FAB and DVDXCopy sadly both are on sale at around $60-$80, and if the master copy had been encrypted with multiple angle capability much like the Star Wars  and Terminator 2, you'll get defective copies, and will be better off with the DVDdecrypter/DVDShrink combo. ;)

Thanks very much, Doc Alfie. I think I'll use DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter na lang, mahal yung DVDFab e. :)

BTW, pwede ba sa DVDShrink na alisin yung mga unwanted and unneeded features of the DVD like foreign language subs, at ibang special features for a better bitrate when it shrinks?

I saw the tutorial at ang nakita ko dubs pwede alisin, I don't know about the other features.

TIA!  :D

DVDdecrypter pa rin sa PS2 games, but instead of of the ISO file, you'll burn the MDF files, don't worry you wont make a mistake, it'll be the one with the data.

Doc Alfie,

I noticed nga na mayroong isang file pa when I use DVDDecrypter even for movie DVDs. It;s just a few KBs in size.  I don't know what this file is for. I just burn the .ISO file. Why is it that for PS2 DVDs the .ISO file would not be burned?

I'm sorry I'm just curious and wanting to add something to my still limited knowledge of technology!

Thanks very much!

It'll depend on what you decrypted, if it's data files such as PS2 games the (mirror)MDF will be the ones with data, unlike DVD movies, you'll be copying the exact Image Files, hence, the ISO.

Kindly clarify, what you mean by "cut and paste", since if you did this, we will presume that you "cut and paste" data, for what we are commonly aware of is that "original DVD movies" should be decrypted initally and later converted into an ISO image prior to being copied. Do shed us more light on this.

Did you try another media? what's the model # of your Liteon ? except that your liteon is a lemon(it's possible, heard some bad stories about Liteon) it's not a compatibilty issue, neither is it a config problem, since, you were not able to read teh blank disc.

yeah... when making backups... the ISO method is the way to go. "cut and paste" is just not reliable.  :-[

(unless the "original dvd" you are backing up is on a dula layer disc... if so, you can use nero recode or dvd shrink for that.)

i own a lite-on recorder myself... and i'm pretty happy with the performance. no horror story here (so far.)

You'll need to experiment with different combinations of software to find out what works. In any case, consider burning to ISO first and look for software to run the ISO to see if the movie plays properly.

Aside from DVD Fab, is there any other software to split a DVD-9 into DVD-5 (because DVD-9 blank media are so expensive whilst DVD-5 blanks are so cheap...)?

The software must not reduce the DVD video's quality (eg. DVD-Shrink) and not delete the bonus/special features.

Just a back-up...............thanks!!

I have been trying to find DVD-A ripper, but those available before are not online anymore. It seems that ripping DVD-A is a total violation of copyright protection that is why people who wrote software to capture the audio stream does not publish their software anymore in fear of litigation!

I was looking for a ripper because no car audio supports DVD-A and I have a lot of DVD-A's that I want to play in my car stereo. Now I end up buying CD's of the DVD-A titles I have. How fair is that?  >:(

There's probably something about the DVD speed in the program settings. Otherwise, you should probably look at the help file, FAQ, or tech support forum in the maker's site.

I have an AoA Audio extractor. What it does is convert DVD to AVi/MPEG/WMV/IPOD/PSP/MP7,etc. and then getting the audio as MP3, WAV or AC3 from the converted file.

I do not know any other method.

BTW, this application is free. I got this from PC Utilities accompanying disc.

mga sir's, question

I downloaded a trial version of Dvdfab because I tested of backing up a copy on one of my collection.

The back up was successful.

However, upon checking the original disc, it seems that the region coding was removed (The disc is R1. I was shocked that it played on my player that is set to Region 3 coding)

Normal po ba itong behavior na ito? Since this is the first time that I tried backing up original dvd.

thanks.

I am also assuming that the dvd (warner title) baka during production, they were not able to apply certain protection.

Pero will again test try another back for R1 dvd.

Sir, full version po ba yung gamit nyong Dvd fab?

Ok. So again, I tried to back up another R1 title.

It goes smoothly. The protection and regional coding were left intact on the original disc.

No more problems encountered.

Ok. I don't know if there are some issues with other dvd players. Since a friend of mine requested for a copy of a specific title.

I copied it, then tested it on my player if it will work. All is well. Then nung play na ng friend ko yung movie, sabi niya sa akin, nag error tapos di raw nag aapear ang menu.

Is it compatibility issue with the player or the dvd-r itself?

If you're only using freeware.  You can use Ripit4Me, along with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. DVD Decrypter alone won't work with some newer disks.  You can get RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink here:

If you only want to use one program to make a backup copy of a disk, try DVDFab 5.

Thanks aremdvna for the above links. I have been using DVD Shrink for a few years & vey happy with it. Easy to use & very intuitive.

I would certainly like to try other software as well. Heard about DVD Fab for quite sometime but it's not a freeware that put me off. For DVD copy/backup purpose only, in your opinion which software do you think it's the best?
