Title: VIVA LA INDEPENDENCIA!: Independent film screenings in Manila
Post by: quark on Feb 14, 2005 at 03:22 PM
hi folks! i know a lot of us really like watching and looking out for Filipino Films, and when we do we usually get heartbroken finding only LET THE LOVE BEGIN and DREAMBOY as the choices on the menu. it's also kinda hard keeping up with all the special screenings of films worth noting like Ebolusyon and Ang Pamilyang Kumakain Ng Lupa, so why not put up a thread with announcements of where all these films can be found?

i'm gonna do a Joey Fernandez now and make a fearless forecast that you can all stone me for at the end of the year if it doesn't come true: 2005 will have been the most important year in Filipino Cinema since 1982. this is mostly because of Cinema One Classics and Cinemalaya, but a lot of other things are going on as well. For some weird and wonderful reason VIVA, SEIKO and REGAL are scourging the country for new talent (so for those interested, better get your pitches ready!) add to the equation UNITEL's always noteworthy stuff and STAR CINEMA's possible Miramax/Focus-type wing, and the fact that many filmmakers are now making their own stuff either funded by themselves or foreigners, and i think we have a pretty exciting year ahead! here's just some of what i'm looking forward to in 2005

CINEMALAYA
ANG PAGDADALAGA NI MAXIMO OLIVIEROS from a script written by Michiko Yamamoto and Raymond Lee, under the direction of Aureaus Solito
ANGELA, THE BADING ASSASSIN, A MUSICAL by Francis Hechanova
ICU BED#7 by Rica Arevalo
ISNATCHERS by Michael Dagnalan and Roberto Aves, Jr.
LASPONGGOLS by Sigfied Barrios Sanchez
SARUNG BANGGI by Emman De La Cruz
and omfg this is just too good to be true PEPOT ARTISTA by Doy Del Mundo

CINEMA ONE CLASSICS
actually the only ones I know here are NORTH DIVERSION by Dennis Marasigan and
SCHOOL SCANDAL by Jade Castro. any other recommendations?

STUDIO FILMS
LIHIM by Cholo Laurel (STAR)
BIKINI OPEN by Jeffrey Jetturian (SEIKO)
PINOY BLONDE by Peque Gallaga (UNITEL)
PASYON, USA by Mark Meily (UNITEL)
BOSO by Jon Red (VIVA)

INDEPENDENTS
SA ILALIM NG COGON by Rico Maria Ilarde
DILIMAN by Mes de Guzman
Raya Martin's feature film
ELEGIE by Mo Zee
RAYMOND RED'S MYSTERY FILM by Raymond Red
CAMILING by Erwin Romulo

please everyone just recommend stuff and let's all see each other in the showings and experience PHILIPPINE CINEMA like it was always meant to be experienced!

all this brings to mind my favorite scene in the MATRIX, which is not, like most would point out, the Bullet Time scenes or the Kung-Fu training scene. it is, instead, a small intimate scene between Neo and Tank, played by the sublimely brilliant Marcus Chong. Marcus looks wistfully at the Nebuchadnezzar's window, which shows absolutely nothing, and he reminisces on Zion. "It is the only place we have left," he says. This is followed THE MOMENT, the moment I rewind the most in this masterpiece of a film, where Marcus turns to Keanu and says, "I don't know if what Morpheus said about you is true, but if it is..." a pause, then a whiplash motion accompanied with a sudden hoarseness, as if he were about to sneeze, "EXCITING TIME!"

exciting time.

ok, that was the intro, here's the lowdown...

over the next few days NCCA will be holding a festival of the films they've funded in the past 3 years. Tomorrow, Feb 15,is the opening  in NCCA Intramuros. the fest opens with CAMILING STORY, a film by Erwin Romulo who you might remember as the film/music columnist in The Youngstar. he also wrote the second episode of First Time, which i think is the best, actually. it's at 6 pm, opening with a film by his wife Yvonne Quisumbing-Romulo called PUEY, which is great. CAMILING STORY stars the rockstar/sex offender Diego Mapa and Sonjia Cajile, along with cameos by Cesar Hernando and Rox Lee (playing a priest. you can't miss it.) if you want to get cocktails it's earlier, around 5pm  ;D

the day after they're showing Mes De Guzman's DILIMAN. mes did a short called Batang Trapo which was really good so i'll try to catch this one as well. fantastique.

Nice topic quark! Still this will make Philippine CInema stay alive and yes....i'm already looking forward to Peque Gallaga's PINOY BLONDE.

My excitement to Pinoy flicks dated back in 1982 (my cousins were all moviebuffs then) when I was rejected at the screening of Oro, Plata, Mata at the MIFF .......the year when we had the 2nd Golden Age of Philippine CInema and from what you have posted.....2005 seems to be the 3rd Golden Age.   8)

A bit OT but then maybe it's just as important to raise it here.  I've been browsing the web for the past few days, hoping to get info on where to buy copies of Filipino film classics.  Through Kabayan Central, I was able to find out that LVN and Sampaguita are selling VHS copies (upon order) of the films in their respective collections.  However, a lot of the classic films are not in either collection.  From the movie database of the UP Film Center, I was able to ascertain that it has VHS copies or 35 mm prints, of some, most if not all of it not owned by the UPFC.  If you want to buy a copy, the UPFC has to clear it with the owner (naturally).  I also found out that some of the prints were owned by different individuals, studios and even by the Philippine Information Agency.

My concerns are:  Isn't there any project to make copies of these films, sell them to the public and in the process make them more accessible (and make a profit for the entrepreneur at the same time)?  There are a lot of individuals in this forum who work in the film industry or who are involved in the arts.  Can't you guys do this or prod someone in the industry to do so?

I  think we should not just preserve our great Filipino films but make them more accessible.  I feel it's just a shame that we have all these films that are not being seen by the public more often. I don't think we should wait for the next film festival just to be able to see a handful of these films.

Sad but true most Filipino film classics are either rotting or even destroyed thru the passing of years. And hold your breath some are being made into "torotot" for use in New year's eve. We can only access it thru cable, overseas (which I did thru the kindness of one pinoydvd member)....what we have to do now is constant request to major movie companies to release these films on dvd format because they have the rights now regarding the master prints of these movies example are those by the defunct Experimental Cinema of the Philippines now owned by Abs-Cbn.

And mind you there is indeed a market of our films even in overseas.

In the meantime that the owners of the master prints are not doing anything, where locally or overseas can I buy copies of these films?  I'd really want to start my personal collection.  I'd prefer DVD but I will settle for VHS.

I hope you were kidding when you said classic Filipino film prints were being used to make "torotots".

Bodacious cowboy that was true man. Sorry this is out of topic already, the "torotot" thing was discussed on other threads but I forgot it already.

Most of my collection were just burned from the original existing vhs copy, some from cable. Just keep on searching on the net aside from kabayancentral.com, yehey.com, regalfilms.com. And if you have friends in the U.S. they can help you out finding those films on vhs which I also did before.

I'm still confussed. correct me if Im wrong. Thank God for the Indie films. But how come they called themselves an Indie film while it is produced from known film companies like:

Boso from Viva
Pinoy Blonde from Unitel

Im just worried to other films who produced their own films. Where's the competition anyway?

Hmmmm.... Maipalabas nga sa ABCinema ng Channel 5....

Big Time, Dilim, atbp.
By Joey Fernandez

How does one write about a movie you love?  I’ve seen Big Time twice and I absolutely adored it both times.  Mario Cornejo and Monster Jimenez may have come out with what probably will be one of the funnest movies of the year.  Big Time is about two criminals who want to make it… well, big.  Danny and Jonas have been partners in crime since their grade school days and they feel they have to move on to larger things.  I don’t want to spoil anything for you about the movie, but it was a riotous romp that just about everyone can enjoy.

Anyway, you can watch this movie and other films at the Cinemalaya Film Festival, which started today and ends July 17.  Their website is at http://www.culturalcenter.gov.ph/film-cinemalaya.htm

One of the biggest peeves I have about Filipino film and art in general, is that it doesn’t capture something about our culture.  Ferdinand Marcos ingrained in us that Filipino culture has something to do with people in bahags and nose flutes.  Elitists lionized the alibata and the bahay kubo as our only true Filipino culture, while other educated ones bemoaned our lack of it.  But whether you like it or not, Pinoy pop culture is our Filipino culture.  We are a mish-mash of Spanish, American, Malay culture, that sometimes we don’t know who we are.  That, however, is exactly what we are, a mixture.  I was recently posting on twitchfilm, a website about movies, about Filipino cult movies and surprisingly I was able to find out a lot about it.  On internationalhero.co.uk,, I quote, “Not the most obvious country to have created enough superhumans to warrant it's own page, the Philippines nonetheless has produced a large number of suitable characters, and has a strong tradition of ‘Pinoy Komiks’ stretching back more than fifty years.”  This is our culture, it may not be glamorous, but it sure is fun.

So, I say, stop aiming for the highfalutin and the esoteric, pop culture is where it’s at.  And eventually the big bucks roll in. *grin*

On another note, I’d also like to promote Topel Lee’s new genre film, Dilim.   As a Rica Peralejo press release writes it, “Dilim, the lead character, is a mysterious vigilante and vampire-like creature who roams at night to save crime victims and eat criminals. Is he a cult group member or an alien out to cleanse society?”  I wasn’t going to announce this film yet (coz I wanted to see it first, hehehe), but it’s going to be showing at the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Fest 2005 at the SM Megamall Cinema on July 29, 30 and 31.  It will be the opening film!

So that’s it for now, I guess.  Looks like we have two, TWO! great pop culture films coming out this year.  Hurray for Philippine Cinema and happy viewing :).

Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros
By Joey Fernandez

I was planning not to watch Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros.  I was like, oh no, another movie about “baklas” in the Philippines.  How cliché.  But APMO, is not your typical Filipino pink film.  First of all the movie is not about the expected oppression of gays.  In fact, the gay child, Maxie, is quite loved in his squatter colony, even by his macho criminal father and brothers.  I am frankly sick and tired of movies about fathers beating the crap out of their sons because they are gay.  Yes, Filipino showbiz industry, there are families who love their sons, gay or not.

The movie unfolds and there is a new cop on the block.  As expected Maxie falls in love with him and the usual childhood crushing ensues.  Though what I found more fascinating is how Michiko Yamamoto, the scriptwriter puts in the details of how a poor Filipino society functions.  Jueteng is tolerated.  Ending is a cottage industry.  Maxie with a small piece of paper and a pen can run it.  Even the police play jueteng.  For an outsider, there are other things that can be quite disturbing.  The police captain drinks with petty thieves.  The “tambays” show deference to the cops, but curse them after they have passed by.  It is also shown it is disrespectful to turn down a drink in a squatter area, I have always wondered if this is true, but I am too chicken to find out.  Heck, there was even nakedness shown in the film, that was quite jolting, ah, the joys of having digital effect blocking certain things, if this movie ever hits the mainstream theaters :)

I also like the way the film portrays cops that are quite different from how we usually perceive them.  Cops do provide order to the neighborhood and we do need them.  If we didn’t have cops, the Philippines would be a lot more chaotic than we think.  And it is a very difficult job.  Plus contrary to popular belief, cops aren’t much richer than the common Filipino.  So don’t think those mulcting street cops are raking it in.  Their stainless steel jeeps kind of show how much they are really making.  But most surprising of all when Maxie’s crush starts investigating Maxie’s family, they retaliate.  Destroying the belief that cops are untouchable.  Some cops are indeed heroic.

So I guess what makes this movie work, is the changing of perceptions we think we know about the urban poor but aren’t necessarily true.  This movie is about the shattering of myths and this is why I believe, it is well worth watching.

Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is showing at the Cinemalaya Film Festival at the CCP from July 12 to 17.  Schedules for the screenings are located here:

Watch it at the CCP.  I've never been to a film festival before, but I have a feeling this one captures the film festival atmosphere that perhaps you would feel at Sundance.  Seriously.

Wear black. :D

Too bad I'll not be able to make it today at the CCP because of a family gathering. Thanks for the recommendation Koboy. But I'm sure to catch it at U.P. Film Institute.

Why wear black?  ;D

I saw Big Time and Mansyon back to back a few days before the Cinemalaya officially started.

I laughed hard at Big Time and thought it was hugely entertaining but I thought Mansyon was the better film. Apples and oranges, probably. Besides  I was thinking maybe I'm just a bit biased because I know its director ,at least professionally.

Then it won. I guess I was right. ;D

Did you see Pepot Artista, X?

I don't know if I'm just weird or something, but I was squirming while everyone was laughing. It just didn't work for me and I had to conclude that they gave the Best Picture to the del Mundo coz he was the oldest and most established among the nominees, but seriously, the film is unoriginal and quite flat. The theme would've worked better as a documentary or something else, rather than what was Pepot Artista.

Pepot Artista

Doy del Mundo attempted a period film (`70s) through references to Guy and Pip and by using some 70s street slang, plus the bellbottom costumes. Most of the teens in the audience were laughing hard at the cutesie patootsie scenes. But somehow, I think, bumigay ang script towards the end. Nice attempt. Pero I think Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is the better film. IMHO.

Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival

What is there to look forward to in each of the six entries in this digital film festival? Read a little bit about each film below.

DILIM by Topel Lee
Action Thriller. Dilim is an enigmatic creature that roams the streets at night and does vigilante work, saving innocent victims by literally devouring the villans. Conflict ensues when a do-good policeman goes hot on his trail.
Cast: Rica Peralejo / Archie Adamos / Emilio Garcia / Mario Magallona / Hermie Concepcion

SA NORTH DIVERSION ROAD by Dennis Marasigan
Ten scenes, each one involving a man and a woman in a bantam car traveling northward along the North Diversion Road. The recurring theme: infidelity of the man.
Cast: John Arcilla and Ms. Irma Adlawan

SITAK by Liza Cornejo
Jack, a middle-aged guy, is fired from his human resources job of 20 years. This prompts to contemplate on suicide but he chances upon a taxi driver whose stories encourage him to get into the cab business and succumb to the probable dangers that come with it. Even if it means shame in the culture he belongs to, he will get what he desires, privacy. And hopefully, death.
Cast: Chanda Romero, Lou Veloso, Gerry Cornejo, Reno Romero and Jam Rodriguez

SANDALANG BAHAY by Mark Gary & Denisa Reyes
Is about the dramatic and sometimes humorous life and times of the Sandalang family. It's a film about facing the past and owning up to the truth that resides in the bleakest corner of the soul. This is seen in the interetwining lives of the 3 Sandalang sisters.
Cast: Albert Martinez / Ronnie Lazaro / Mads Nicolas / Nonie Buencamino / Hermie Concepcion / Gilleth Sandico / Sharmaine Buencamino / Adriana Agcaoili

ANAK NG TINAPA by Jon Red
Anak ng Tinapa is a story about small fish: framing-up and killing small fry instead of the big fish in a society ruled by sharks. Two crooked cops get a kick out of framing up hapless people by planting illegal drugs on them. Unknown to these rogue policemen, a group of loony and ambitious student filmmakers is watching and documenting their every move. In the end, a brutal killing spree of individuals occurs.
Cast: China Cojuangco / Ryan Eiganmann / Atong Redillas / Ting Medina / Soliman Cruz / Hector Macaso

ANG ANAK NI BROCKA by Sigfried Barros-Sanchez
Ang Anak Ni Brocka is a mockumentary. It is about a group of investigative journalists from a sub-par TV station who accidentally scores a scoop that a twenty-year old boy is looking around for his identity. What's very controversial about the boy's identity is that he claims to be the son of the late famous director Lino Brocka, a known gay filmmaker.
Cast: Nonie Buencamino, Roence Santos, Bombi Plata, Raul Morit, Adrian Ramirez, Raph Hernandez, Ronald Tupas and Soliman Cruz.
With special appearances by Gina Alajar, Bembol Roco, Joonee Gamboa, Christopher de Leon, Phillip Salvador.

Title: Sa North Diversion Road
Post by: Noel_Vera on Nov 12, 2005 at 05:24 AM
Unfortunately I've never seen Tony Perez's Sa North Diversion Road onstage, but it's easy to see why this is a perennial theater favorite, constantly being restaged: it's the story of ten couples, of different social classes, occupations, and temperaments, driving at different times down the same road, dealing with the man's infidelity to the woman. The metaphors are obvious--life is a long road, taken by different people as differing experiences, with different destinations along the way; the pleasure in this piece is in the actual execution, a dramatic tour de force for two actors as they play ten different people in ten different emotional tones.

Easily the best thing about Dennis Marasigan's adaptation of the play is just that: it adapts the play, making changes where necessary to exploit the medium of film. Flashback sequences are inserted when necessary, mostly in the beginning of the picture, to ease us from the usual film narrative to the more radical one of the play (funny how narrative theater, with its spatial and temporal restrictions, seems on the whole more adventurous than narrative cinema when it comes to plot structure). On a tiny budget he achieves a variety of lighting schemes and music to accompany each story, from an austere darkness and stark piano score (indicating Ingmar Bergman angst) to a bright and sunny farce, the characters' thick  Bulacena accents providing the rhythm and melody. There's a silent slapstick interlude (one of the film's comic highlights), a '70s Bohemian laugh-a-thon, even a science-fiction-y segment, with two intellectuals decked out in stark white (a nod to THX 1138?) literally overanalyzing their relationship to death.

Marasigan rises to the Hitchcockian challenge of spending almost the whole ninety minutes in a car's confined space, and still making it visually interesting--he gives us a variety of angles and cuts fluidly and interestingly to differing beats (from languid long shots to nervous quick cuts), depending on the story he's telling. He keeps the different storylines clear and distinct where it could all easily become confusing.

But the glory of the film is his work with the actors, and the performances they give. The film is a true duet, with John Arcilla and Irma Adlawan (Marasigan's wife) as the ten troubled couples, and where Marasigan supports them with lighting and music and costumes and the occasional prop (a hilariously ubiquitous bag of watermelon seeds, for example, which seem to transcend social class and background), most of the work and effects are created through the actors.

This may be mainly bias, but with the exception of a few segments, it seems to me Adlawan's character sets the tone and carries most of the picture. She either dominates the scene or is Arcilla's equal, and as we run through the different stories, a composite or collage impression of her character emerges--sarcastic, witty, furious, tender and ultimately heartbreaking, the different characters merge to give us the bewildering, ever-changing complexity of the human soul.

Arcilla gives support, but this is no small thing; I've never thought 'supporting performance' ever meant the performance was inferior, or less crucial, only that in the story's structure it's nominally subordinate. He keeps up with Adlawan's bewildering cornocupia of characters, matching her every change of mood, no easy feat. When he's given his own aria--the devastated husband dealing with his mentally incapacitated wife--he's simple, direct, moving. One of the best films, Filipino or otherwise, I've seen this year.

Can't go into too much detail about it right now (hoping to do an article on it), but I saw Siegfried Sanchez's Anak ni Brocka, and agree with much of what Jojo V and rse said--the fictional framework is less successful than the documentary segments (although I do love the barber-shop scene), you wish they spoke to Bembol, Gina and Philip instead of using them as actors, and the film is ultimately more a nostalgic journey into the many highlights of Brocka's life instead of a more critical levelheaded view--tho to his credit, Sanchez does his best, and it's really difficult to say anything controversial, especially with so many of the people involved still alive.

Maybe the most glaring omission (other than those already mentioned) is Mario O'Hara...but again, knowing how difficult it is to pin that guy down, I can't blame Sanchez for contenting himself with a brief flash of O'Hara in Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag.

Beyond that, just for Sanchez's being able to pull together all these interviews, all those brief glimpses of Brocka's films, all the news footages of his appearances and death (and where did he find that taxi driver?!), it's an indispensible document--a must see for any newcomer at all interested in Philippine cinema.

Question: where was Spindle bar located? I remember it was in Banaue. Anyone know the exact location? My Manila geography's starting to get rusty...

Just read all the reviews for ANAK NI BROCKA, made me more interested to see the film. I'll get the vcd this week.

SPINDLE BAR? It must be somewhere in Tomas Morato Ave or Banaue, Noel. And where's Malu Barry now?

glad you liked the movie Noel... it's really difficult for a first time director to put together a film about Brocka. it may have some shortcomings but Anak Ni Brocka is an otherwise informative movie.

Malu Barry is still around wasn't she in Jeffrey Jeturian's Minsan Pa?

Malu Barry has a nice and good voice, and Lino went nuts about her.

Spindle was a top 1970s bar along Morato corner Mother Ignacia.

It was famous for its circular floor space. Rico Puno was discovered there.

When it closed shop during the 1980s, it became ST PETER THE APOSTLE CHURCH.

Any updates for 2011?

I heard there was a movie about the Fil-American war last week.  Didn't get to see it at all.
