:)Frankly, our pinoy dvds belong to the not-so-impressive lot. I really look forward to seeing pinoy classics like BADJAO, BIYAYA NG LUPA, MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG, INSIANG, HIMALA, SISTER STELLA L and all those great movies from the 70's and early 80's, immortalized thru dvd. These movies are worth collecting for. Or why not a Lino Brocka or Ishmael Bernal collection?
Why can't some historical commission do something about this. Budgetary constraints?

Don't you think that there is something wrong with local DVDs? I mean it will most likely appeal to Pinoys in other countries that have different regions. So how can they buy or even watch these DVDs if their players are locked to their respective regions. Just a thought lang.

someone said in the forum that the filipino dvds have region 0, meaning, they can be played on any dvd player from whatever region.

Dietsprite Don't worry. I am also on the lookout for the release of Pangako...Ikaw Lang. I'm pretty sure that it's due to be released since Joyce Bernal's other romantic comedies (Dahil May Isang Ikaw and Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw) made it to DVDs.

Hi, first time to visit this thread.
Saw the list of available DVDs...it's not a very good list of films. Macho Dancer and the two Joyce Bernal romantic comedies are the most watchable of the lot (well, For Your Height Only has some camp value), but I'd hate to represent the Philippines with this paltry selection.
On the question of subtitles...they don't do English titles lightly, it's very expensive, paying for translator, spotter, then actually printing the titles will cost from a hundred to two hundred thousand pesos...no, the studios, especially nowadays, are not interested in spending the money.
There is this government body called IFFCOM that will reimburse a studio for expenses in showing to a film festival abroad, but it's a reimbursement deal, and studios aren't even willing to advance the cash.
That's the reality of it, folks. With amateur subtitling techniques, that may be the only hope...

I've watched Dahil May Isang Ikaw & Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw before and I was very impressed with the subtitles done for those two DVDs. As far as the English and Tagalog subtitles are concerned, they were professionally done. In synch and accurate.

Cheesy horror or women-in-prison b-movies. So bad, they're good !
Some feature filipino actors like Vic Diaz and Eddie Garcia(!), but american-produced.

Great list of films on Romero. Always wanted to see his B movies, Gerry De Leon's too (IMDb would have em, tell you if they're on DVD).
De Leon's Terror is a Man, the second remake of Island of Dr. Moreau (not the terrible Michael York version), was shown in the Berlin Film Festival last, uh 1999 I think, part of their Artifical Man or something retrospective. I hear it was sandwiched between Blade Runner and Metropolis.

Glad to hear about the subbed DVDs or VCDs or whatever; I just don't think the very best of Philippine cinema is being subbed,unless they have gone to film festivals.

This film has been marketed thru the laser Disc Format before, seems it's a good candidate to be transfered unto DVD.

JT-At the rate this transfers are going you'll probably get them faster there in Singapore, Let me give you an example.

I am still looking for it and till now,nunca, even the Video City people are not aware that this DVD was ever produced. ???
I am saddend by the fact that it is probably the same thing, all over again, as to. what happened to the ORAPRONOBRIS,Lino Brocka film which was distributed in Laser Disc format and did not even made the rounds here in Manila. :-[
Do keep us posted just in case you'll come across a Pinoy film in DVD in one of your forays. :)

Oh my God! Alfie Amigo, how could you? Nananahimik ako. What have I done to deserve this he he he? Well, since buking na that I have the Rizal DVD, might as well tell them my story. I think the copy I have is a Commemorative Issue. I got it by accident and at the time I did not have a player yet. I just thought that since I was going to buy a player in the near future, might as well start collecting. I was not aware yet of this regional encoding crap but I sure do know how to spot a genuine. So, coming from Raon where I bought an electrical gadget last October or November 2000, I passed by this store and saw the Rizal DVD screaming for everyone's attention and it caught mine (though I entertained thoughts that it was pirated). When I got my player this January 2001 and played the DVD on, I was amazed to have found out that it had a MENU and it featured the making of the movie. When I played the movie, it had automatic subtitles and the picture is almost perfectly crisp and clear. The packaging is also not so-so coz it has an in-lay and the paper is glossy and the prints are fine and not blurry.
Thereafter, I checked the stores (Astrovision) and they said that wala pang Rizal dvd and were unsure as to when GMA intends to have it released on that format. I guess I was just lucky. I found the dvd at the time I was not looking for it. I think ganoon talaga. Agree?

That's a cool DVD you got there! Probably the copy you have is a Limited Edition Corporate Givaway of GMA. I guess GMA releases such once in a while. I got a Christmas CD which they gave away in mid-90s.

As per Amazon.com, there are three Filipino films (all directed by Eddie Romero, two of which stars FPJ) to be released on DVD by December 4, 2001

I'm also aware that there exists a DVD of a Weng-weng movie released by one of those outfits specializing in weird cult movies. May review pa nga eh. I stumbled across it using Google. Ayun! Nakita ko rin. Here's the link for the review. It's VERY interesting.

I think the correct title is Caged Heat 2: Stripped of Freedom. And boy, it's directed by Cirio H. Santiago. Isn't he a respected Filipino director? I could be wrong becase when I checked Amazon for Cirio Santiago's directorial jobs on movies/VHS sold in the site (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index%3Dvhs%26field-director%3DCirio%20H.%20Santiago/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20), it returned almost 20 movies to his credit.

I was in Powerplant just last week and saw two new Pinoy titles that aren't in the list. One's Bullet and I forgot the other one. I couldn't find them on the internet, so if any of you guys can refresh my memory, I'd really appreciate it.

Actually, the driving force behind this thread is to provide a comprehensive list of DVD movies that were produced in the Philippines. Since these DVDs aren't listed anywhere else, what better place to list them than in PinoyDVD?
Apparently, some of the submitted titles can't be considered to be produced locally so I guess I'm going to have to edit the list to separate the locally produced DVDs from the others.
As such, I'll make another thread listing DVDs that concern the Philippines (be it subject matter, director, actor or even mentions our country) and I'm sure your submission will find its home there. :)

Just saw "Pangako... Ikaw Lang (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?pilipinosuperstore+HvacWM+paniklanlidf.html)" on DVD at AstroVision today. It's also on Sale at Php450. ;D
I checked the back cover to see the features and listed there are the following: FREEVIEW (which is VIVA's term for trailer--I read that in another thread) and MTV. I'm assuming that's Regine's music video for Ogie Alcacid's song she remade entitled "Pangako". I haven't checked the quality of the DVD though.
Guess the long wait is over for you guys! :D

Nakita ko rin ito kahapon. At talagang nagulat ako. Mas mahal pa kaysa sa Criterion ang mga yun ha. ??? Napagkamalan siguro nilang VHS yun. Kasi ganoong price lagi ang new release VHS nila.

I'm afraid, they won't release these in PI. Masyado raw controversial. Lalo na't sarado ang isipan ng tiga VRB. Walang pag asa. Kaya kung trip mo ang movie na nabanggit. Bilhin mo na on-line. ;)

barrid, I haven't seen the three Regal releases here in Manila, not even in Astro. I also haven't seen any other online shop carry the titles (yet). I'm assuming that these DVDs are being pressed in the U.S.

On the second thought, I might be biased because the VCD I've seen was theater cam shot. Last option would be renting out first those videos then decide if it's a keeper or not. ::)

I suggest renting first the Original copy of Hubog. It was already release for rental in Video City Outlets.

I Bought it from Astrovision in Alabang Town Center.
Not quite a good bargain for P450 especially As I mentioned, barebones itong DVD na ito. However the reason why I bought it is because "It is a collection to my end"
You notice din pala on my "Collection".
Anyway, The DVD nga pala is from Viva.

Just viewed it last night, mu goodness I agree with you.
The bad part of this film was everytime there would be a computer graphic effects involve the screen would have a blackbars on top & bottom (ala widescreen)
Not recommended for DVD viewing

Actually it was a vhs I rented in Video City. However my gut feel is along with usual DVDs made here is that it would basically be the same as others.

i just recently bought a copy of the DVD of Pagdating ng Panahon and Hanggang Ngayon... Ikaw Lang...
although i had only watched the first movie, i noticed that there are no subtitles.. i believe this is one big DVD feature that they left out in a hurry to release the DVD of the movie.
i just find it discouraging why they didnt' put subtitles, because aside from this, nothing would really differentiate it from the VCD or VHS format coz it is clear that the quality of the movie isn't really very clear (you can still see the scratches and dirt as common with the films used in the cinemas).
its just i like watching these movies with my friends who are non-filipinos and the only way they could understand the movie is by reading the subtitles..

joeyboy76 You may be right in speculating that they must have forgotten to include subtitles in the Pagdating ng Panahon DVD. I have all of Joyce Bernal's DVDs - all except that one since I didn't enjoy that particular movie so I can't confirm if it's only with your copy or not.
However, I can assure you that with the other Joyce Bernal DVDs, the subtitles are very impressive. The tagalog and english translations were very accurate, the font was easy to read and are perfectly synchronized with the dialogue.

Upon aquiring "TATARIN' yesterday, to my dismay, Yes they indeed remove the subtitles features.
But the goodies (if you know what I mean) within the film is still intact ;)

Removing subtitle feature maybe one way to make the DVD more affordable. For me, putting lot of useless subtitles cost more. Why not put outtakes or bloopers if they want to fill the DVD so it won't look like a barebone.

I should have post my comments sooner, but my package from Regalfilms came a lot later. ;D ;D ;D
Anyway, Yamacrapa, Bahay ni Lola and Hubog are as bare bone as you can get. It has an English subtitle. Animated chapter index [divided on six chapters]. Full screen. And that was it.
Though I was not able to watch all of them. I had a peek on Bahay ni Lola. As a test drive, I jumped into one chapter to see how it look like. I can't believe it. It is obviously copied from tape. It is grainy and there was a tape wrinkle from the source. They should/could have used a decent tape source to make it a little presentable.
Will post comment soon after I peeked into Assunta's Hubog and Yamacrapa. ;D ;D ;D

Please pardon my earlier comment about the "Bahay ni Lola" dvd. Like I said, I just peeked in on a certain chapter. In which the resolution suffers a because the scene was shot in the dark. Today, I was able to watch the whole movie. And, I was wrong! The transfer is clear. With the exeption of the part I first jumped in. It is comparable to every Pinoy DVD I got. I'm sorry for misleading you. :-[ I could have modify my earlier post, but I believe, some members had already read my post. So, I will just leave it that way.
About the " Yamacrapa" DVD. I just finished watching it. The transfer is also clear. And I must say, I got my moneys worth. The Letterboxing thing happening during the special effects are negligible. It lessen the full screen very little. If I was not informed before hand. I might not noticed them. I don't know how the transfer was on VHS. But On DVD, it fairs fine.

I got the vcd copy (before i knew that Regal was releasing it on dvd) and the vcd picture quality is bad. I hope it's better on dvd.
Would really appreciate your feedback on the picture quality. Won't mind getting the dvd if it's better than the vcd.
Hubog won various awards and citations, including the Urian, for 2001. It caters to a particular taste in filmviewing. And I'm not just talking of Assunta's assets here.

Well. I haven't seen the original VCD version of the film. So I can not compare it with the DVD. Anyway, if you own or has seen some Pilipino DVD before. It has the same video quality just like those other releases.

The only other locally produced pinoy dvd i've seen is 'burlesk queen ngayon' - which totally sucked! Aside from the dvd containing the edited version (as noted in an earlier posting in this thread), the picture quality was not different from the vhs version, which is not saying much, considering the price difference & dvd technology potentials.
So i guess for now, i'l just avoid the viva & regal dvd releases....
I've seen some tagalog dvds produced in the US. Picture quality is at par with hollywood dvd releases. Dvd ang dating, hindi vhs-looking with matching tape creases at the bottom or top edge pa kung minsan (as in the viva releases)... Except for "curse of the vampires", which I had to get since it was directed by the late great filipino master gerry de leon - the overall quality was WAY BELOW the film's grade-B genre!

Everyone here has agreed that all the Pilipino DVDs was copied from VHS. The only thing I like about the DVD version is that you can access your favorite scene/chapter in a couple of second.
Also, May I encourage you to post some of your comments about the future of Pilipino DVDs in another thread. Let's keep it busy. Maybe some insiders from different film co. are reading this, and maybe they will consider our comments and make a better DVDs in the future. ;)

I saw one at the Filipino Fiesta a couple weeks ago and it's a Martin Nievera's Concert. I did not took a good look since Rex Navarrete was performing at the stage that time. And also, the price tag is almost $20. Siguro,kung concert pa ng Parokya ni Edgar o Grin Dept yun, tataluhin ko na. ;D ;D ;D

hey guys, I'm new to this thread. I was reading the earlier posts and i agree about the lame quality of contemporary Pinoy films. Could someone lobby to have films transferred to DVD from the birth of Pinoy cinema to at least up to the early 90s? Especially films from the 60s and early 80s (Oro, Plata, Mata is a personal favorite), because almost everything else after 1990 to the present kinda s**ks.

I do think, too that hat should really be released on dvd formates (or even vcd) are the pinoy classics such as those you guys have mentioned. It's pretty embarassing that a lot of asian countries are already releasing their classics while we don't even have decent film stock of ours. Sad to say that the Film Archives don't even have the means (financially and technologically) to restore classics suh as those my De Leon. If I remember right, I was told in one film class at UP that the original director's cut of Oro Plata Mata is no more as Regal re-used the cut negatives. If I'm not mistaken almost on hour's footage was cut out and re-used >:(

Barrid, both titles are not yet available on DVD dito. I believe mauuna pa sa US since Regal titles are known to be pressed in the states.
On VHS or VCD formats naman, I don't have an idea if the said titles came out. Someone out there might have an idea.

Just visited this thread now and would like to satisfy my curiosity. I've noticed most of the films now available on DVD are recent films made over the last 5-10 years. What about films made in the 70s and 80s that are consdered well made or classics at the time of their theatrical relases. Top of my mind at the moment are ORO PLATA MATA, TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG, NUNAL, INSIANG to mention some. And I'm not even asking about the films of the 60s and earlier considered as cinematic masterpieces or great directorial works among local films (like the movies of Rosa Rosal, Pancho Magalona, Charito Solis, Rita Gomez, etc)
Are these old pinoy films unrestorable? Is there any government or private instituion or agency tasked with restoring these old films and putting them on DVD digitally remastered ala CASABLANCA, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, BEN-HUR, etc?
Or is the effort just too expensive for the limited pinoy market?

I just saw this now. You can try contacting CCP's Sineklab. I became an honorary member and was fortunate enough to be at one of their screenings of a restored "Oro, Plata, Mata", "Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon?" "Biyayang Lupa(?)" and "Noli Me Tangere" a couple of years back. Oro was fully restored, I think. Don't know about the alleged missing hour of footage. The only glitch was the first scene, the whole party was re-edited wrong so you have to figure out the sequence later on. I'll try to see if I can contact the guy in charge about our concerns.

That's what I'll be talking to the guy about. Even if it's not on DVD format, I'll work on trying to see how lowly me can help get these films out commercially. About the 1 hour missing with ORO, it's just a rumour. And the whole first scene was re-edited wrong only on the 1996-97 restoration. Peque Gallaga was furious during the screening. But all the cuts were there so it's not hard to rectify the error easy enough.
We watched it on 35mm film. Portable Screen setups and all. What can I say? Malinis. Very clear print. You'll definitely appreciate it.

Hi pinyapple! "For Your Height Only" used to be a part of this list but it was later transfered to another list (List of DVDs that have connections with the Phils. (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=778)) since this release is not a true-blue PinoyDVD since its redubbed in English and directed by an foreigner.
But if you look at the early postings in this thread, the title has been mentioned already (I think twice before this one :) ). There's even a separate thread devoted only for this title: Cult Classic AND it's a Pinoy DVD! (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=3167).

If you find the choices of local DVDs in brick-and-mortar video stores a bit limited, your only other option is to buy the titles you want online. Links as to where these titles are available are often provided here in the forum.
Although, as you may have noticed, prices of these DVDs in online stores are relatively more expensive compared to the current selling price of Pinoy DVDs sold in video shops. In addition, most of these titles seen first online become available in local shops eventually. :)

:)Frankly, our pinoy dvds belong to the not-so-impressive lot. I really look forward to seeing pinoy classics like BADJAO, BIYAYA NG LUPA, MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG, INSIANG, HIMALA, SISTER STELLA L and all those great movies from the 70's and early 80's, immortalized thru dvd. These movies are worth collecting for. Or why not a Lino Brocka or Ishmael Bernal collection?
Why can't some historical commission do something about this. Budgetary constraints?

Ever since they were kids, Marian (Kristine Hermosa), a simple lass in the Cordero hacienda, has been in love with Anton, the grandson of the hacienda’s patriarch. She has always believed that she an Anton would fulfill the legend that Don Alejandro, tells about hacienda. According to Anton’s grandfather, the sweetness of the mangoes relies on the kind of love that a Cordero couple manning the hacienda share. Proof of this would be the prosperity of the mango orchard when Alejandro’s beloved wife, Isabela, was still alive.
The orchard ceased o flourish when Anton’s parents got separated. Anton (Jericho Rosales) and his father left the hacienda to relocate in Manila. As painful as it could be to Marian, she held on to her belief that the love she and Anton would share would make the mango orchard flourish again.
Anton, on the other hand, has always taken the legend with a grain of salt. He would rather stay with his father in Manila and practise his career as a civil engineer than take on the reins at the hacienda.
When Don Alejandro suffers a heart attack, Anton is forced to return to the Cordero hacienda. Anton's several years of absence is greatly marked by his apparent alienation to his roots. This is a stark contrast to the kind of passion for the land and its people that Marian, who is now Don Alejandro's administrative assistant, shows.
Anton believes that he is more of an engineer than an haciendero. His brief stay though proves otherwise. As he is challenged to take on the leadership at the hacienda, the love for the land and its people grows on him. More so, that he discovers the kind of woman that Marian really is and finds himself falling in love with her.
In Marian's heart, the legend fulfilled. Until, Trisha (Michelle Bayle), Anton's girlfriend in Manila, arrived in the hacienda and proclaims the approval of Anton's 250 million-peso project proposal.
Anton is torn between a dream and a legend. Just when he chooses his love for Marian over the success as an engineer, Marian unselfishly lets him go to pursue his ambition.
Legend or no legend, true love finds a way to fulfill its own course....

roljamie, I don't know what do you mean exactly but you can check out DVD Aficionado (www.dvdaf.com (http://www.dvdaf.com)) which lists 30,000+ titles listed in their archives.

Both flicks are just bare-bone editions. What a waste considering that these two flicks are highly and critically acclaimed.
Just got my original vhs of VIRGIN FOREST & UNFAITHFUL WIFE 1 from Regalfilms.com. I hope they release these movie in dvd format with features.
I cant find any copy of these in Astrovision.

Pinagsumikapan ng college-graduate na si Gil (Gardo Verzosa) na maisaayos ang buhay nila ng kanyang asawang si Joy (Red Rivera) sa kabila ng maliit na kita sa pagiging bumbero. Subalit hindi ito naging madali para kay Gilbert pagkat nananaig sa isipan at katawan ni Joy ang ala-ala ng kanyang masalimuot na karanasan, kamunduhan at kawalan ng pag-asa. Pilit na pinagtatapos ni Gil ng high school si Joy, ngunit ayaw ito ng babae. Sa kanyang kahinaan, hinahanapan niya ng katugunan ang hilig ng kanyang katawan sa sex. Saan kaya hahantong ang magkasalungat na pananaw sa buhay nina Gilbert at Joy?
Bagama't may kuwentong maituturing ang Bigay Hilig, hindi maikakailang nagiging behikulo lang ito upang makapagpakita ng labis na eksena ng bawal na pagtatalik. Sa kabuuan ay mahina ang aspetong teknikal ng pelikula. Hindi maayos ang daloy ng editing, nakakainip ang ilang eksena, maingay ang background, at minsa'y nakabibingi ang dialogue. Maliban kay Versoza, ang pagganap ng mga artista ay kapos sa damdamin—lalo na ng si Red Riviera bilang Joy, na mukhang makatotohanan lamang ang pag-arte kapag nakikipagrombohan sa kama. May gustong ihatid na positibong mensahe ang Bigay Hilig, katulad ng pagiging matatag sa tukso ng isang lalaking may-asawa (si Gil) at ang pagbibigay dangal nito sa kanyang hamak na gawain bilang bumbero. Subalit ang magandang hangarin nito ay nalulunod at natatabunan ng bulgar na lengguahe, at ng mga "wala-akong-pakialam" na attitudes o pananaw tungkol sa sex na inihahayag ng ilang mga tauhan lalo na ng ina ni Gil (Daria Ramirez) at Alan (Carlos Morales). Maselan ang mga isyung moral at panglipunan ang walang ingat na inihantad sa pelikula katulad ng kahirapan, pangangalunya, homosexuality, pagpatay at labis na pagkahilig sa sex at kamunduhan.

Where may I buy those DVDs of the 2003 MMFF entries?
I'm interested in sending a couple of the 2003 MMFF DVDs also to a friend in the States. Are these releases all Region 3, or will my friend be able to view them there even if she has a Region 1 player?

groucho, I think most (if not all) MMFF DVDs are locally available. Crying Ladies and Bridal Shower are yet to be released though.
Despite what is stated on the cover, locally produced Tagalog DVDs are generally Region 0 (all-region).

Bart, am so sorry if I may have missed something. But you stated in your February 22 post in this thread that "Crying Ladies" was available. Or maybe I was not informed of an advisory to the contrary. Just asking.

As stated here (http://www.pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=22143.0), 'Crying Ladies' will be released by mid-June 2004. My previous posting was based on it's "availability" on another site which is apparently not accurate.

Do we have any of the classic, acclaimed movies in Pinoy DVD yet?
I'm looking for tittles like Jose Rizal, etc. .... Something that we can actually be proud of.
Not the simple skin flicks, and mindless plots that's common.
I bought "Sana Ako Na Lang Sana". I was surprised to see a Pinoy DVD in Fry's Electronics here in Chicago.
Saw it and fell asleep 30 minutes into the movie!!! I'm not even going to continue viewing it.
The video transfer was bad and the sound was bad too!
Do we have any real good ones????????

Got a copy of Gene Cajayon's The Debut during the Astro sale for only Php 320.00!
It's not exactly a Pinoy film in the technical sense as it was made in the US and marketed there.
The dvd has excellent features, particularly when the director and his staff talk about their experiences in trying to get funding for the film then later marketing it.

I suggest to buy Jeturian's KUBRADOR, because it's bound to be hard to find in a couple of months, just like MINSAN PA, TUHOG and BRIDAL SHOWER.
