The WB's 'Supernatural': A Ghostly, Ghastly Trend

By Tom Shales
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 13, 2005; Page C01

"Supernatural" is neither super nor natural -- "Discuss," as "Linda Richman" (Mike Myers) used to say on "Saturday Night Live." But "Supernatural," part of a trend toward frightening and sometimes frightful new fall shows, does deliver genuine shocks and jolts, enough so that one might reasonably call it electrifying or maybe electrocuting -- an inarguably less enjoyable sensation.

Essentially "The Hardy Boys Go Ghostbusting," the series, premiering on the WB network at 9pm , stars likable Jared Padalecki and unlikable Jensen Ackles as brothers Sam and Dean, who were children in Lawrence, Kan., 20 years ago when their mommy, manipulated by malevolent forces beyond their daddy's control, was first plastered to the ceiling as she flailed helplessly and then, along with the rest of the house, incinerated in huge billows of flame.

Huge billows of flame are very big in the new fall shows.

The boys and their father escaped. We encounter Sam in the present, grown up and leading a normal life as a student at Stanford University. He has a beautiful roommate named Jessica and a chance at getting into law school -- until, after two years of separation, brother Dean decides to make a noisy reappearance.

Dean doesn't just call or drop by. Writer and series creator Eric Kripke, to inject a phony scare near the start of the show, has Dean stupidly break into Sam's apartment on Halloween night, thus terrifying the occupants. Asked to explain his bizarre behavior, Dean says smirkingly (which is how he says everything), "I was looking for a beer." Sam should kick his butt back out on the street then and there.

But Dean has a mission. He wants Sam to abandon college and go off on a wild ghost chase or two -- attempting in the process to track down Dad, who has devoted his life to finding the evil force that killed Mom but now has vanished himself. Sam is reluctant to leave, but if he stayed put, there'd be no show.

Soon he and his tiresomely smart-alecky brother are in Jericho, Calif., where they run smack into the local legend of the "woman in white," who lures men to fiery and bloody doom with her frequent appearances as a tattered hitchhiker.

We're told that everyone for miles around knows of the tale, but that doesn't stop a young man, on his way home, from stopping to give Ghostie Girl a ride and ending up going straight to Hell himself. As with many of the fright shows proliferating this season, the special effects on "Supernatural" are easily as graphic and gory as those in a PG-13 horror movie.

The details of the woman in white's saga, whether shown or discussed, are ghastly. She is a member of a spook subculture, we are told, made up entirely of women who went mad and, during unspeakable rages, murdered their own children. Now their spirits wander the world seeking some kind of reconciliation.

There isn't much in "Supernatural" to engage viewers older than Sam and Dean, but it's certainly not the worst of the new troop of spookers. Dean may be an obnoxious boor, but he does get some of the better lines, as when Sam scoffingly remembers Dad long ago telling him not to be afraid of the dark. "Don't be afraid of the dark?" says Dean, who's now doing the scoffing. "Are you kidding me? Of course you should be afraid of the dark!"

Yes. And there's so much of it -- especially on TV.

Naturally the lads help close the book on the woman in white and her homicidal hitchhiking. Now Kripke needs an excuse for Sam to stay with Dean and continue their nomadic brotherly misadventures. Dean apparently can't get Sam to commit to that just on the basis of locating their father, so Kripke throws a big fireball into his life that virtually forces him to reenlist. It's a pity that this involves removing Jessica, the only truly attractive character in the group. A Smurf T-shirt never looked better than it did on her.

"Supernatural" definitely gets the job done, but it's highly debatable that it's a job worth doing.

Last Week was great seeing the season premiere of this New Mystery/Horror TV series...

Basically its a mystery adventure of two brothers in search for their father and for the one who murdered their mother. Grizzly tales of horror along their journey....

It got a great eerie tune /soundtrack courtesy of The Dave Mathews Band

It got me hooked up.. I dont know if this premiered also in Phil. but if ever, its a highly recommended TV Series.

Gave this series another try. It pulled me back in after seeing the 9th episode, Home. The 10th episode was even better, Asylum. That cliffhanger must've been so frustrating for US viewers since they had to wait over a month til the next episode.

The frustrating is... From WB, Supernatural will now be a part of CW..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that sort of a good thing, since the show was still picked up when those networks merged, instead of being left out in the new CW network?

I really tried to like this series, but something held me back, I just couldn't place it at the time. Realized now that the "something" were the two leads--I can't stand them, one brother is an a$$hole, while the other one always looks dirty and unkempt, like he doesn't shower or something.

im watching the show every week on axn and although some episodes are downright creepy, the bottom line is that supernatural is a poor man's x-files wannabe.  which comes as no surprise as some of the staff on the show were alumni of that mighty mighty x show.

After the initial promise of the pilot, I feel that the succeeding episodes are not living up to what I was expecting from the series. Each episode has eerie parts, I'll give it that much but overall it fails to sustain your interest even for just forty minutes. I hope that it improves with the second season though.

In the meantime, it is quite unfortunate that a show that is really eerie and scary as this one was not supported by the general public...

I've seen the recent episodes of season 2 and they've really stepped up their game. Episode 12 in particular (Nightshifter) was awesome. Some of the episodes are still duds, but in general the second season is quite enjoyable to watch.

The second season has better episodes indeed. It even attracted (in)famous actors such as Tricia Helfer, Linda Blair, and Gary Cole among others. The latest episode set in Hollywood was a riot.

Agree as well, the writing and the stories in general are much better than season one. And I'm ashamed to admit that I only recently realized why Kim Manners' name is so familiar. He was also the producer as well as the director of a lot of X-Files episodes.

   Better late than never....

Just finished the last 6 episodes of Season 2 'til the wee hours today. It's like a book I couldn't put down. I somehow like the Winchester brothers 'stupidity' in dealing with the 'supernaturals' basically. It's part X-Files/CSI but with a slant on the paranormal. Heck, It's even sometimes feel like a Gilmore Girls, er, Boys when they argue over their dead mother. The season 1 ending is a blast unlike this second season ender but still you'll be looking forward for the third season. As they say, there are still 'more' out there.

I like almost all of the episodes but the one that gets me the most are:

   Season 1: Episode 9: Home
                           12: Faith
Season 2: Episode 1: In My Time Of Dying
                            3: Bloodlust
7: The Usual Suspects (the one with Linda Blair, hehe, like the "pea soup" Dean dialogue at the end)
11: Playthings (a bit of a reference to The Sixth Sense and the '80's movies, Dolls & Dolly Dearest)
15: Tall Tales (a funny episode even if they are dealing with evil)
16: Roadkill (sad, sad episode with great reference to The Sixth Sense, even Dean jokingly called Sam
                                'Haley Joel' at the end)
17: Heart (back-to-back sad episodes with 'Roadkill', they definitely channels TV dramas
with these episodes. My So-Called Supernatural Life, perhaps?)
18: Hollywood Babylon (the one with a haunted movie set. This episode screams with "Evil Dead' references all over.
The swaying of the swing at the doorstep, the cabin very much similar in The Evil Dead
and the display head of a reindeer. Hell, they even called one of the supposedly movie's character as Ashley!
The story for this episode has been 'been there and done that' but I got kicked watching this with many movie
references! Oh yes, Scream 3 comes to mind. :D

Thanks to a friend who bought me the box sets! ;)

I'd definitely watch right away and leave my things behind when I got my hands on Season 3. I was able to watch the entire Season 2 in three days (rather in midnights) just because I can't wait to see what fate will the Winchester Brothers have in the second season. Now, I'm waiting for the DVD of Season 3.

Alona Tal! More of her please. Or any other hot chick for that matter. I'm not done with my season 2 boxset so I don't know anything about her in season 3 (if she appears at all).

The stars of the show are cashing in on their horror genre marketability.

Jared Padalecki will be in the remake of Friday the 13th. Jensen Ackles, on the other hand, will be in the remake of My Bloody Valentine.

Why so many remakes of 80s slasher flicks?

The show is being groomed. With Smallville about to end, Supernatural is the CW's next big brand. Although Gossip Girl's not far behind I suppose but that one's just starting out.

From TV Guide:

Sexy Supernatural thief Bela (Lauren Cohan) has already been sent to hell — unlike Dean, she won’t be released — and now the show’s creator Eric Kripke tells TV Guide it’s bye bye to sexy demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy) as well.

“She’s great, but this was unfortunately a financial decision — purely budgetary, because creatively she was terrific," Kripke said. "I have nothing but great affection for Katie, and she was great for the show. It was a very difficult business decision about the realities we are in." Though the budget’s the same as last year, the show films in Canada and is suffering from a lousy exchange rate.

There will be female characters, Kripke promises. But expect more of the love ‘em, leave ‘em or kill ‘em variety. “We have a plan that’s as exciting as any we’ve ever had of how to thread new characters in some unexpected ways,” he said, adding that the season opener will have a couple of “bombshells that will set the show off in a new direction.” Just don’t mess too much with those Winchester boys!

News about SUPERNATURAL SEASON 4 .....  ;D

Interview with Jared Padalecki
POSTED 11 June 2008 @ splatterfilms

QUOTE:
While on the set of Platinum Dunes' upcoming remake of Friday the 13th, we got a chance to talk to one of Jason's latest victims, Jared Padalecki. And of course the conversation soon turned to the fourth season of Supernatural. Season three ended with Dean (Jensen Ackles) going to Hell. So, where does that leave Sam? Jared was quite eager to answer our questions:

I know we're here on the set of Friday the 13th. But I have to ask some Supernatural questions. When do you guys go back to shooting again?

Jared Padalecki: As of right now, we are supposed to start in the first week of July. Of course the strike is a big issue. But they want to have us paired with Smallville. And Smallville is going to start shooting really early. So they want us to start shooting early, so they can air all of the episodes together.

Have you seen any scripts from the first couple of episodes?

Jared Padalecki: No, uh-uh. I haven't seen anything. Hat's off to Eric (Kripe). The only person I have talked with is Jensen. He and I keep in touch. But we haven't seen any scripts or read any of the scripts. We haven't even heard any of the ideas that they have.

You know that all of the fans are freaking out because they thought Jensen was off the show? But clearly not.

Jared Padalecki: I'm hoping clearly not. I think his plan is to be in Vancouver when I am in Vancouver. I pray to God that he comes back. Because that means every day, all day, there would be no one there to bear the burden except me. But, no, I'm sure that Jensen will be a huge part of the series. Just as he has always been. He's just in Hell this time out.

Barring the actors' strike, the fourth season of Supernatural should be here soon.

4.01 Lazarus Rising

After the deal to save Sam, Dean was finally taken by the demon Lillith and transported to Hell. Or was he? As Sam comes to terms with the loss of his brother, time passes and the world carries on. But sometimes, you just can't keep a good Winchester down...

4.02 Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester

Bobby and the Winchesters are haunted by spirits from their past hunts, but are things really what they seem, or is there an even darker force at work? With Dean still coming to terms with what's happened to him, and Sam still adjusting to life with his brother again, it's tough to be a Winchester...

4.03 In The Beginning

Dean makes a leap worthy of Sam Beckett, but can revisiting the past really be a good thing? Or will the grizzled hunter find out things about his family he'd rather have stayed as skeletons in the ancestral closet....

4.04 Monster Movie

It's back to the golden age of black and white movies for this creepy episode! When Dean and Sam discover a whole host of murders that appear to have been commited by famous Hollywood monsters, can there really be a copycat freak out there, or is it something even more sinister

Wow, some really good storyline. Liked the second episode's title. Similar to a book title.

Title: Re: Supernatural
Post by: keilu on Oct 13, 2008 at 07:42 AM
bit of correction. Episode 4 is entitled Metamorphosis (kinda boring episode, but links to how Sam will in the end treat his psychic powers) and Episode 5 will be Monster Movie.

anyhows, somebody uploaded the episode guide over at wikipedia :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernatural_(season_4)

1    "Lazarus Rising"    Eric Kripke    Kim Manners    3.96[1]    September 18, 2008
It's four months later and Dean wakes in a pine box. He's been freed from Hell. He has a joyful reunion with Sam and Bobby, but it isn't long before the three wonder what exactly pulled Dean from Hell and what it will want in return.

2    "Are you there, God? It's me, Dean Winchester"    Sera Gamble    Phil Sgriccia    3.18    September 25, 2008
Sam, Dean and Bobby are being haunted by the angry spirits of people they couldn't save. Bobby becomes emotionally disabled when the ghosts of two young girls, he couldn't save begin to haunt him. Dean and Sam think they are going crazy when the ghost of FBI agent Victor Henrickson (Charles M Whitfield) and Meg Masters (Nicki Aycox) appear and accuse the boys of failing them. At the end of the episode Castiel reveals that the ghosts rising is one of many signs of a coming apocalypse where Lucifer will walk the earth.

3    "In the Beginning"    Jeremy Carver    Steve Boyum    3.51    October 2, 2008
Dean is transported back in time to Lawrence, Kansas where it is the 70's. There, he meets the younger John Winchester (Matthew Cohen) and Mary (Amy Gumenick). This family reunion gets bigger when the Dean meets their Grandfather (Mitch Pileggi), who could have a huge secret.

4    "Metamorphosis"    Cathryn Humphris    Kim Manners    3.15    October 9, 2008
Sam and Dean encounter a man who seems to be turning into a monstrous creature.

5    "Monster Movie"    Ben Edlund    Robert Singer       October 16, 2008
Once again, the brothers encounter a shapeshifter. But this Shapeshifter is much different than the other Shapeshifters they have encountered. This one likes to shift into monsters from 1930s horror movies. Sam and Dean come up against Dracula, Wolf Man, The Mummy and even the creature from the Black Lagoon.

6    "Phobia (aka Yellow Fever)"    Unknown    Unknown       October 23, 2008

                  There's something out there...

I've rewatched the whole season one in about four midnights. Many of today's US TV shows have themes of 'supernatural' but this series stands out because of interesting storyline and really creepy effects and locations. Great chemistry by Ackles and Padalecki does help a lot to make this TV series well-worth the viewers' time.

Season 4 is getting very interesting with Sam's new power & an introduction of a new character
angel castiel, whom even demons fear :)

I miss the old ruby (kate) though. I'm very optimistic for this current season, i hope its better than the last one.

Walang patapon na episode so far I think. Even the stand alone ones are pretty solid and entertaining.  Old Ruby (Katie Cassidy) reminded me so much of Kristen Bell. Although type ko rin si Genevieve Cortese as the current one. Hehe...

Yup! this show gets better with age....the boys also grows! Unlike that other show heroes :P
My favorite would be Dean's "Eye of the tiger" lip-synch at the credits of Yellow Fever!!!

I'm pretty sure as the season progresses he'll show more powers than exorcising demons, Sam's supposedly leading the yellow-eyed demon's pack right?

in one of the episodes that I already saw, I was suprised to see that their mother's side were hunters, Mitch P (for me) was perfect for the role

SUPERNATURAL is every horror movie buff's heaven. One heck of a chemistry between the two leads! Worth owning on DVDs. Commentaries are surprisingly fun to watch. Kripke is like a kid everytime he talks.

This is very sad for fans of SUPERNATURAL. He made some of the best episodes of the series.

^ Definitely agree with you on this one. It's like the show lost momentum after they wrapped up the "angels versus demons" storyline before the hiatus.  I hope they build up on something interesting towards the season finale.

I find the episode GHOSTFACERS in season 2 unexciting among other episodes. A would-be great concept that's just an okay for me. Still, the show is a fun watch.

This started out really great, seasons 1 and 2 were really good ...... it all went slowly downhill since IMO.
