Title: Veronica Mars
Post by: RNIverson on Sep 23, 2005 at 01:27 PM
(http://www.serieslive.com/images/autres/casting/veronica%20mars%20-%20cast.jpg) (http://veronica-mars.org)

Veronica Mars is set in the wealthy, seaside community of Neptune, where the rich and powerful make the rules, own the town and the high school, and desperately try to keep their dirty little secrets just that…secret. Unfortunately for them, there's Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) a smart, fearless 17-year-old, apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the town's toughest mysteries.

During the day, Veronica must still negotiate high school like any average teenage girl. Along with fellow outcast, sophomore Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III), she bravely maneuvers her classes, wary of former in-crowd friends, like ex-boyfriend Duncan Kane (Teddy Dunn) and his best friend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), and edgy outsiders, like Weevil (Francis Capra) and his P.C.H. Bike Club boys.

At night, Veronica looks after her former-Sheriff father Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) and helps with his struggling, new private investigator business. By sneaking through back alleys and scoping out no-tell motels with a telescopic-lens camera and her math book, Veronica attempts to uncover the California beach town's darkest secrets, including who killed her best friend and Duncan's sister, Lilly, and created a scandal that cost her father his job, his home and wife.

Pushed to the edge of this multicultural, venomous little Peyton Place, Veronica Mars relentlessly continues to search for evidence that will clear her father's name and get her back into the "in-crowd," but what she finds may tear the town of Neptune apart at the seams.

It's been hailed as the new "Buffy" and no less than Joss Whedon himself loves the show.

I just finished the first season on DVD. I liked how there was a major mystery story arc that evolved throughout the entire season, while every episode had its own minor mystery/crime to solve. The slight cliffhanger/hook at the end of each episode worked well. It didn't feel as forced as Alias' annoying episodic cliffhangers during that show's first season.

It's addictive, and much better than most typical teen shows. Some plot twists I really didn't see coming. My main complaint was that they really rushed the end - they kept you hanging on all the main story arc issues until the very last episode, so that was full of "blink and you'll miss it" revelations.

I think the only thing the show has in common with Buffy is that Veronica is a beautiful, intelligent and sometimes sarcastic crime solver... in high school. Plus it has Willow and Cordelia as guest stars, so I guess they're really milking the "they're the next Buffy" publicity.

By the way... Season 2 na nga pala yun, sorry.  ;D

Nope, Charisma is older than Alyson.

Re: the season ender being rushed, I think it's because they thought the show was about to be cancelled so they closed the arcs rather than leave it hanging like "John Doe." Anyway, "Lost" could stand to learn a lesson or two from VM regarding holding back answers. (I'm betting the final answer we get to Lost's mystery would either be so mind-blowing or something that has been speculated before on some message board.)

Anyway, the show is a perfect example of how to balance season-long arcs and one-shot episodic plots.

Just saw episode 2 of season 2. Woo hoo, Kevin Smith plays a... CLERK!

I just love this show. I gave it a chance one Sunday and i was totally hooked! Though sometimes, i miss some episodes. It's really smart, funny and heart-wrenching especially the end of season 1 and her mom's problem. Nancy Drew never had it so good! It's too bad it doesn't get as many viewers. I wonder what special features the DVD has?

As far as I know, they are few extras in the DVD set. The unaired extended pilot, and then a few deleted scenes. There's a review of the DVD here (http://www.dvdtown.com/review/veronicamarsthecompletefirstse/17155/3185/), and specs are listed here (http://tvshowsondvd.com/releaseinfo.cfm?ReleaseID=4993). Too bad, it's such a great show, I'd have loved to know more about what went on behind the scenes.

The show is currently on its second season in the States. It doesn't rate too well, but it does have enough of a cult following to at least finish this season. I hope it gets renewed for a third, since I see this show as one that can keep you hooked for a while.

Too bad, it's such a great show, I'd have loved to know more about what went on behind the scenes.

I read an interview with the show's creator about that. They were informed of the release of the show on DVD at too late a time to do additional special features. The option became either release it with just the deleted scenes/extended pilot in time for the start of the second season, or to release it after the second season had already started. That wasn't an option, since they felt the DVD set might hook a few more viewers and improve the show's ratings. That tactic actually worked for "24." The first season rated poorly, but the DVD release made the show a huge sophomore season hit.

However, if you want an additional special feature not on the discs themselves, then you can dowload an audio commentary for the pilot by the show's creator, Rob Thomas. It's at his web site, http://www.slaverats.com. Easy instructions on how to access/download it here: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4277

It's still the same: We Used to Be Friends - The Dandy Warhols.

Charisma Carpenter is hot! Steve Guttenberg seems creepy. I also notice that most actors here also appear in Big Love.

I'm so glad I gave this series a try. It's addictive and the mysteries hook me to await each episode.

some trivia...
The only two actresses considered for the role of Kendall Casablancas were Heather Graham and Charisma Carpenter. Graham was working on "Emily's Reasons Why Not", and Carpenter was an actual fan of "Veronica Mars", so she ended up being cast in the role

You may read the whole recap on Television Without Pity: Veronica Mars Episode 3 (http://televisionwithoutpity.com/story.cgi?show=139&story=8381&limit=20&sort=).

I'm posting their recap in a nutshell:

Douglas Adams Had No Idea (http://televisionwithoutpity.com/story.cgi?show=139&story=8381&limit=20&sort=)
Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang - Because he thought towels were the most useful thing in the universe, and yet here's one covering up Logan's naughty bits. Also, Veronica thinks the bus crash was meant for her, and Big Dick gets run out of town. But we don't know if that moniker could be applied to someone else, because...towel.

You might also prefer the TV Guide (http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=800000192) version.

The scene with Dick Casablancas, Sr. looked like an hommage to Arrested Development. Shred everything!

I just completed my catch-up. I loved the "Arrested Development" episode, since George Michael & Maybe were clearly still very much in character from that show!  ;D

Although I personally enjoyed the season, I think they went the wrong way. They tied in way too many elements from the first season, so unless you've been a loyal viewer since Day One, there's no way you could've fully understood the resolution to this season's main mystery. That approach may work when you're already a big show, like "Lost," but not if you have really low ratings and are trying to increase your viewership. New watchers would go "Huh?" then tune out.

I hope the show gets picked up by the new CW network, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't. We should all know for sure by next week, when The CW is expected to announce their fall line-up.

I don't know how long the fan base can keep this show going but if the ratings were an indication and the network only ordering 13 episodes, the future of this show looks bleak. Veronica's retention of its Gilmore lead-in was a troubling 63.63% in households and 70% in adults 18-49 (The Futon Critic).

Not to worry. Considering the show's cult following, I think it's a sure thing.

Best examples would be Arrested Development's Third Season (13 Episodes) and Tru Calling's Second Season (just 5 episodes). Both still made it to DVD.

But it really depends on whether the DVDs of Season Two sold well enough for the studio.

The CW has just complicated matters. They ordered additional episodes of Veronica Mars, but only 3 so far. As such, Rob Thomas will clearly either:

1. Create "filler" episodes to insert within the 13 episode story arc; or

2. Complete the story arc, then have 3 stand-alone episodes - not really the style of this show; or

3. Start a new story arc and just keep his fingers crossed that The CW orders the last 6 episodes to make a full season.

This is so not good... yet somewhat good, if you know what I mean.

IIRC hindi pa nga 3 episodes eh. 3 scripts lang. They're not giving the go signal to shoot 14-16 yet.

any updates on season 3?

Last I heard, Season 3 will only have 20 episodes instead of the traditional 22. This week's episode concludes the rape storyline. Since Rob Thomas both wrote and directed it, it's the best episode of the season so far. You might want to watch the second episode before viewing to appreciate the twist better. If season 4 pushes through, the show intends to pursue stand-alone episodes instead of its staple big mysteries.

great! at least season 3 is somewhat completed. i thought each season of VM revolves around the big mystery. if they'll remove that, then how would they make a big season finale  :-\

I've read somewhere that they are canning the season long mystery to attract new viewers. They are going to have three separate story archs for this current season. So the rape was the 1st one, the Dean O'Dell mystery is probably the second story arch.

I think it is a great idea. There 's still goign to be a big case/mystery but it wouldn't be stretched out for an entire season. With this new 3 arch per season, we can experience the greatness that is this winter finale three times.

With regard to the latest episode, I think it is the best finale (well neck and neck with Season 1 finale) yet in terms of suspense and in terms of how the mystery was unraveled. The big revelation was great and you can go back and rewatch the previous episodes and it totally makes sense

          -------  S   P  O   I   L    E   R   --------------

E.g.
- Moe and Mercer used to be partipants in the sociology experiment. Moe earlier in the season said it changed his life. Basically Moe became Mercer's bitch even after the experiemnt. We can assume Moe was one of the prisoners and Mercer was one of the guards
- Mercer's alibi panned out becasue some of the members of the femininst group faked being rape.

I just love this current season, definitely much better than Season 2. The rape mystery was much more compelling and interesting than the bus crash.

Now I am still clueless at the Fitzpatrick mystery. I still don't know what the hell that storyline was about!

Warner Home Video has announced that fan-based bonus material for Veronica Mars will not be included on an upcoming season three set. According to Home Media Magazine, early reports had Warner asking fans to submit videotaped testimonials to be included on the boxset.

Earlier this week, however, the studio announced that time constraints will prevent them from including the feature on the DVD, a release date for which has yet to be announced. Further submissions will not be accepted, nor will anything already submitted be used. In its statement, Warner expresses hope of fan involvement in future "Veronica Mars" DVDs.

That's quite optimistic, since it's really supposedly on the verge of cancellation, from all online reports like the one above.

I hope it makes it, it's still a very good show.

San Francisco, CA: How come Veronica Mars wasn't included on the USA Today "save or axe" survey? Has it's fate already been decided?

Robert Bianco: Yes. According to our reporter Gary Levin, the show has been cancelled. And he's almost always right about such things.

Not likely. Three seasons for a series with dismal ratings was sort of a miracle already. Moreover, the series that replaced Veronica Mars, The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll delivered better ratings.  :(

A new episode was aired today. Un-American Graffiti. So I assume/hope that they'll at least air the last 4 (including this one) episodes regardless of whether it's already been canceled or not. I'm wondering though if this has a 4-episode arc or if these are just standalone episodes.

More 'Mars' Looking Likely (http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-veronicamarsseason4goodprospects,0,7417680.story?coll=zap-tv-headlines)
Veronica may skip the remaining college years

"Veronica Mars" just might get a chance to grow up after all.

The fan-favorite drama is nearing a fourth season renewal, thanks to a reworking of the formula featuring the titular petite private eye. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a presentation for the proposed revamped show was well received at the CW, giving a boost to the show's chances.

If the new season gets off the ground, the show will have fast forwarded to a few years in the future, when Veronica (Kristen Bell) is studying at the FBI Academy. The move is a smart one since Bell has the chops and real-life years under her belt to play older than a co-ed. That would also free up Chris Lowell, who currently plays her pal/love interest Piz, to pursue his receptionist/beefcake duties over at ABC's "Private Practice," the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff starring Kate Walsh.

Although Mars" is critically acclaimed and beloved by the viewers, those viewers aren't the most plentiful when it comes to the ratings game. Hope for a continued life came in the form of creator Rob Thomas' new concept as well as the cancellation of "Gilmore Girls" and "7th Heaven," which will leave the CW with a little wiggle room for the fall.

Thankfully, that was just a blogger's entry. In the original article (http://www.reuters.com/article/televisionNews/idUSN1647370820070518) posted at Reuters, the full quote is:

At a news conference after the presentation, (CW Entertainment President Dawn) Ostroff confirmed that "(Veronica) Mars" has solved her last case in her current incarnation but that no final decision has been made on a proposed new version of the series by creator Rob Thomas in which the title character, played by Kristen Bell, attends the FBI Academy.

So, there's still a slight chance of it returning, but at the rate this decision is going, probably midseason at the earliest.

Thanks, but it's really over....

http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/Veronica-Mars-Boss/800015393
I forwarded Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas the comments Dawn Ostroff made at the CW upfront (read 'em in my live blog) regarding the show's fate, and below is the response he just sent me:

"No one has talked to me about a new, non-Veronica project. All my writers have been offered jobs elsewhere, and I believe they will now all accept these jobs. Very, very, very sad day around the VM offices.

"I assume that anything Dawn would be talking about in the realm of a Rob-Kristen project would involve a new from-scratch pilot as they don't have me in a deal, and they'll lose Kristen in a couple of weeks."

Bottom line: It's over.

First Gilmore Girls and now this. Simply depressing. Who's giving out hugs?

There are rumors that creator Rob Thomas is planning to continue Veronica Mars in the comic book medium, and that he's been talking to DC comics.  It'll be similar to what Joss Whedon did with latest 'season' of Buffy.  Hope it pushes through.

Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith's chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn't taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows... For some reason the Neptune High class reunion takes place on a nuclear submarine! A Hobbit shows up! There’s a Bollywood end-credit dance number! I’ve always wanted to direct Bill Murray. We’ll figure out something cool. Hey, if that total goes high enough, I’ll bet the good folks at Warner Bros. will agree a sequel is a good idea.

Finally, the two obligatory questions. Was Warner satisfied enough by the “Veronica” movie’s performance that there’s a chance of another one at this point?

Rob Thomas: Yes. That’s one possibility. We’d also be interested in that “True Detective” model. I would love to go sell six episodes as a miniseries. That probably gets me more excited than another five, six million dollar movie. If we kept another “Veronica Mars” movie at the budget that we kept the first one, we could do one, I believe. I think we could find people without needing to do a Kickstarter campaign, because the movie did well. The “Veronica Mars” movie is the first thing where I think I’m getting my back end participation — and getting it on the movie. I saw a couple of comments that because we made it for six and it did three and a half million in the theaters that it had failed. And that’s so far from the truth. It has done very well on electronic sell through and rental and airplanes and pay cable. It did very well.
