Title: Pinoy HORROR films!
Post by: Centurion Obama on Dec 26, 2005 at 12:20 PM
 :o

with the continuing onslaught of Asian horror films, my cousin and I got curious about what are the best Pinoy horror films to come out of Pinoy Hollywood?  I know this is the perfect place to ask because we have many connoissuers of Pinoy cinema over here.

Thanks!

"feng shui" is on top in terms of quality, storyline, and direction...

"sigaw" is good, too! it gained int'l recognition...

"pa-siyam" is more of a psychological thriller more than ahorror but commendable enough...

Can ITIM be considered a horror film? If yes, then add it to the list. Also, I can't mention enough the famous Pridyider  (sp?) episode in Shake Rattle and Roll, directed by no-less than Ishmael Bernal, where Janice de Belen is devoured by a refrigerator!

Oh, this ain't horror, but it's very gothic in mood and look: Brocka's Bukas Madilim Bukas, the finak segment in Tatlo, Dalawa Isa.

I can only recall the loudest scream of Susan Roces upon seeing the ghost of her dead sister played by Rosanna Ortiz in Celso Ad Castillo's PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA and the use of broken mirrors to express the impending doom. And that few scenes alone make this movie a certified cult classic!

SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLE the original trilogy produced by Athena Prods of Douglas Quijano is another cult classic.

ITIM can also be considered a horror film in the psychological genre.

SA INIT NG APOY wherein the late George Estregan's portrayal as the devil, still unmatched by any actor in local cinema. Creepy, violent and there's exorcism also. Nice location of the haunted house shot in Baguio City.

TIYANAK is pure fun, Don Escudero's production design is excellent and the movie became a phenomenal hit in 1988.

PA SIYAM complete my lists for the best pinoy horror films.

And when you mention comedy-horror, one of the episode in Ishmael Bernal's ZOOM, ZOOM SUPERMAN wherein Ariel Ureta was being chase by a vampire was memorable and hilarious.

I agree with Itim, Shake, Rattle and Roll (at least the first segment), and Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara. I'd throw in at least one segment in one Shake sequel (I liked "Ang Witawit"), The "Ang Kuba" section of "Magandang Hatinggabi." Pa Siyam is visually and tonally pretty good, tho emotionally and dramatically a tad simplistic.

I'd also add O'Hara's Halimaw sa Banga, a great little short segment with a remarkably complex story between father, stepmother and child in the foreground and the ominous hint of a war between angels in the background. And O'Hara's underrated, little seen Manananggal in Manila, an ambitious script yoked to a terrible no-budget production where the people and even the monsters when they eventually surface are not what they seem.

Then there's the De Leon segment of Fe, Esperanza, Caridad, easily the best of the three, and one of the best shorts involving the Devil that I know of. And De Leon's great Terror is a Man--a moody, visually and dramatically complex retelling of The Island of Dr. Moreau.

And maybe my favorite Filipino horror film--but then it's so much more as well, a love story, war picture, political expose and celebration of Filipino poetry--Pangarap ng Puso. With a real horrorshow ending.

Noel, where can you see Halimaw sa Banga, Manananggal in Manila and Fe, Esperanza, Caridad?

And is Magandang Hatinggabi a trilogy like Shake, Rattle and Roll?
Title: Re: Pinoy HORROR films!

Halimaw and Fe Esperanza should be on Cinema One. Manananggal is Regal, maybe they have tapes, or online ordering. Magandang Hatinggabi is recent, and yes, it's an omnibus.

So Halimaw and Mananaggal are feature films?

and Fe, Esperanza and Caridad is an omnibus film?
Title: Re: Pinoy HORROR films!

Manananggal is a feature--and I do think it shows on Cinema One. Halimaw is yoked to another short, a forgettable Christopher de Leon directed segment based on that A-Ha! video.

Hahahahaha!

okay what is the title of the double film that Halimaw comes out in?  Forgive all my questions, i just want to know, if ever i come across them.

You know what, I don't know. All anyone ever talks about is Halimaw sa Banga. I can't even remember what De Leon's Halimaw episode is titled. The whole shebang could be Halimaw.

This could be a job for Jojo D.

hmmm, the other film I may have remembered as a kid might have been Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.

I distinctly remember a scene though, where someone who I remember to be Janno Gibbs singing a song to Manilyn Reynes.  But I may be wrong.

I also know I saw that Shake, Rattle and Roll segment with Ana Roces.

HALIMAW SA BANGA/KOMIKS was a twin biller during the 1986 MMFF. And yeah, its bad the KOMIKS episode by Christopher de Leon.

I always forgot HALIMAW SA BANGA. It has great character development and Maritess Gutierrez as the monster was really good.

More Pinoy Horror Films that I wish the print is still available:

PAGSAPIT NG DILIM- Perla Bautista plays the manananggal in this creepy, excellent horror movie. Set in a barrio where she attacks at night and devour her victims. Boots Anson Roa and Dante Rivero complete the supporting cast. Check out the most horrifying scene where the manananggal attacked one of her victim inside the hospital through the window and Boots Anson Roa as the doctor was mistook by the folks in the barrio as the aswang.

KARUNUNGANG ITIM (Black Magic)- Ramon Zamora leads the cast while the others I already forgotten as he battles a creature that uses his tongue to eat pregnant women.

LANGIT, LUPA at IMPIYERNO- there is one unforgettable moment of shocking image where they show the visuals and visions of hell in this movie. Great visuals but still, I can't seem to find out who made the movie.

These three movies have been replayed over and over again in channel 13 back in the 80's.

Miss Rita Gomez was the host introducing each of the episode but there's trhis interesting twist at the end. the movie was produced by MVM Cinema and directed by Maria Saret & Ruben Arthur Nicdao.

i loved the Lihim Ng Villaverde episode the most... it was so interesting a different tale of revenge. of course i wouldn't want to divulge the entire plot. just wait til you see it. kasama ito sa mga ipapadala ko sa'yo. kasama din ang At Lumaganap Ang Lagim with Rosemarie, Ricky Belmonte & Eddie Garcia.

Thanks, Jojo. I am currently compiling some of Pinoy Horror films from the 70's to the 80's. The problem always is the availability.

Do you know someone at channel 13? Maybe we can dig their room and sleuth all those rare movies, man.

DAIGDIG NG SINDAK AT LAGIM (Maria Saret/Arthur Nicdao)

Four episodes narrated by the late Rita Gomez. Spoilers alert!

The first one is SPIRIT OF THE GLASS with a bunch of friends having a good time after party by going to a haunted house and start to contact the spirits inside. Most of the actors, I really dont know except for Fanny Serrano who's name synonymous in beautification and Angge, yes, the manager of some stars. This is the best among the lot, with pure shock and comic relief value that will haunt you when you go to sleep. Too bad this episode is very skimpy, only 20 minutes.

ULO NG APO stars Liza Lorena who collects antiques and live in Baguio. Then one day she gets a bargain from an Igorot woman and gave her a necklace with a head. Ending is so predictable already and you know what will happen to Liza Lorena.

LIHIM NG VILLAVERDE has the brilliant Celia Rodriguez in the cast with Ronaldo Valdez & George Estregan.  Estregan is synonymous with those Satan roles but here he turns out as the victim and thank God not a devil once again and exact revenge among his tormentors!

AAGAWIN KITA.....SOR MARIA depicts the battle of good vs. evil once again. A devil played brilliantly by Ruel Vernal is stalking Gina Pareno a nun in a convent. There are some hallucinatory sequences and most creepy was the rising of Pareno from the dead!

These four episodes are like B-movies, gritty and full of realism and creativeness that you can find in Pinoy movies back from the 70's when Road Runner and artsy special effects were not yet in existence. I wish to go back again from the 70's!

You can never find anymore this film except from Jojo de Vera's film archive. Thanks again, man. I can now league this one to the first SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLE.  :)

The video is excellent with specks like a typical pinoy old film and the sound is now crying for improvement thru restoration process but still rocks in my 5.1 DD.  ;D

it's sort of similar Noel, but of course Gerry de Leon's was excellent in terms of storytelling & the films' visuals. Aagawin Kita is pure fun. it tends to be serious at times but the over the top performances makes it all the more campy. it's worth a look though...

Its on vhs, jerix. Yeah, black and white with the late FPJ, Zaldy Zhornack, Dencio Padilla, Amado Cortez. BTW the print is now badly mangled, you cannot watch anymore some of the title sequences/credits. Another case of restoration problem before it succumbed to vinegar syndrome.

DARNA AT ANG BABAENG IMPAKTA - This one's not from the 70's or 80's but I think mid-60's. The villain here is a pretty girl with a twin evil sister who is, read this, LITERALLY ATTACHED, to her back. The evil sister has special powers and is the creepiest thing that you will ever see.

it is from the mid 60's... Darna At Ang Babaing Impakta starred Lisa Moreno as Darna. it used to be shown on channel 13. i'll admit it is creepy. the pretty girl's thoughts is possessed by this creature attached to her back.

DAIGDIG NG SINDAK AT LAGIM, yun pala ang title nang movie na ito...! I remember seeing this on ABS-CBN in the early 90's.  And take note it was shown in the afternoon! I think i was in 5th grade then. I like the 1st episode, with the socialites trapped inside a haunted house. The ending of this episode in particular was very creepy. this is the scene where they discover the dead bodies, i swear i can almost smell the rotting flesh! The episode with Liza Lorena is also very creepy, kasi it deals with shrunken heads yata.  Of course the segments with Rita Gomez, who could forget that voice! I also found Alkitrang Dugo frightening, being just a schoolboy at that time, it was a frightening thought being marooned on an island and be killed by your classmates.

I just remember one of the actors in the SPIRIT OF THE GLASS episode in DAIGDIG NG SINDAK AT LAGIM, that was Cloyd Robinson.

I'm confused, sometimes, I thought he was Ed Villapol the co-host of Bibeth Orteza in Gosiengfiao's TEMPTATION ISLAND.

AT LUMAGANAP ANG LAGIM

The premise was actually engaging. Etang Discher who scares me as a kid in those classic LVN films as a witch which she monopolized was horrifying always. Just her voice will sent your spine chilling! She plays a mother who simply adores Satan to impregnate her daughter, the beautiful Rosemarie Gil. The big event happened much to the distress of Rosemarie Gil who spreads terror in a family together with her son. The conflict arises when the late Ricky Belmonte & Rosemarie Sonora arrive in the scene. Most Filipino films cash on the bankability of loveteams which sometimes I don't agree with except in Gallaga's TIYANAK.

The effects were nicely done, creepy, but the story focus more on Belmonte & Sonora's teeny bop romance which cause me to think, if this movie was a love story or a horror one? But then digging this movie from oblivion was an impossible task to do. Thanks again to jojo's film archive.

             9. GUMISING KA, MARUJA (Susan Roces starrer)
             8. ALAPAAP
             7. HALIMAW SA BANGA
             6. SUKOB
             5. SIGAW
             4. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL 2
             3. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL
             2. FENG SHUI
             1. PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA (Susan Roces starrer, of course).

The list is very debatable. I mean, FENG SHUI and SUKOB? SHAKE part 2 has this one good episode starring Manilyn Reynes and Ana Roces about an Aswang-infested barrio, the remaining two episodes are laughable. I would have included in the list: Romy Suzara's SA INIT NG APOY (has some references with THE EVIL DEAD), PAGSAPIT NG DILIM, GABI NG LAGIM, GABI NG LAGIM NGAYON. I'm sure I would include more deserving films but some titles slipped my mind.

What's your take on the films listed? What's your very own list?

Sukob and Feng Shui? That's just wrong. Not sure about Alapaap, too. Pasiyam should be there. Number 6, at least, or higher.

They missed a handful of horror films from the 60's to the 70's but I do agree on the top one spot. PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA  has pure shock value and flawless technical craftmanship that can beat even THE EXORCIST  & THE OMEN  combined.

The last showdown between Susan and Rosanna Ortiz will truly make you scream at the edge of your seat.

For me, it's more like a supernatural love story. Even though there're ghosts throughout the movie, it still focuses more on the love angle of Nora and Tirso.

"Sundo" from GMA Films, starring Robin Padilla, Sunshine Dizon, Katrina Halili and Rhian Ramos...synopsis of the movie is -- "Final Destination"...

"Seven passengers on a trip to Manila escape death and their respective "sundo" by a twist of fate. Soon, they realize that the price they have to pay for gambling with the spirit of tragedy is the hardest and most ruthless battle they will ever come to face."

See? It's a "Final Destination" wannabe...

Actually that plotline is way older than Final Destination. Millennium had an episode that had this premise, for one. Final Destination was a wannabe too.

Sundo is Topel Lee, right? Didn't think much of Ouija but I'd probably see this.

Definitely a true pinoy scary flick in the '80's. I used to watch its reruns on IBC-13 then saw it again years later when it was aired via cable back when CINEMA ONE was PINOY BLOCKBUSTER. I was disappointed when the movie never made it in ANG PINAKA-SCARIEST PINOY HORROR MOVIES episode before. SUKOB and the likes are definitely more popular that made it on the list but very lame compare to this one. I wonder who were the voice behind the diabolical laugh of Lorna when she was possessed. The theme 'Apoy' sung by Anthony Castelo and Imelda Papin was in a way unforgettable, too. Hopefully it will be released on an original video.

Is that "gabi ng lagim" already on CD? btw bro, who starred in that movie? In B&W pa yan di ba? Can i possibly borrow that bro? tnx  ;D

I think I have a digital copy of this. Is this the one who has different episodes and one episode is just like a pair of hands, then FPJ and the rest of the gang in a haunted house?

Does anyone has a copy of this? di ko na ito inabutan hehehe, pero I am very much interested in watching this. I am also looking for the film of Gabby Concepcion wherein he played like a vampire or a demonic creature. It is under Seiko Films if I am not mistaken.

I don't know if it's horror per se, but I loved Haplos starring Vilma, Christopher de Leon and Rio Locsin. Boyet is caught in a love triangle between health worker Vilma and provincial lass Rio who... **spolier** turs out to be a ghost who was killed by the Japanese in WWII! Best line for me was when Boyet and Rio met in the cemetery and Rio asked where Boyet was from. Boyet: Galing akong Saudi. Rio: Saudi? May Hapon din dun?

I also loved Diosa starring Lorna Tolentino and Lloyd Samartino. Lorna is a vengeful encantada out to ruin the lives of all the male descendants of the conquistador who stole her treasure. Forget the baduy special effects. The concept is so rooted in Pinoy folklore! Wish we could do this again...

Even Gerry de Leon's BAKIT DUGO ANG KULAY NG GABI  was not included.
@keating, I think the correct title of that one is Kulay Dugo Ang Gabi. Unless you're referring to a Danny Zialcita film, which usually would have a convoluted title like this (ie Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap?, Bakit Madalas Ang Tibok Ng Puso?, etc). But then again, I'm not sure if Zialcita ever dabbled in the horror/thriller genre?
Title: Re: Pinoy HORROR films!

Thanks for the info R2. And its by Celso Ad Castillo not Gerry de Leon.

BTW Zialcita's rare film MASQUERADE will be screened by SOFIA at the CCP next month. I don't know also if he dabbled in the horror genre. But I do believe Zialcita is underrated.

TENTATIVE RELEASE DATE: September 19, 2012

Regal Entertainment is bringing one of the most far-fetched horror classics to the big screen anytime this year. That is, Ishmael Bernal’s Pridyider  segment in the first Shake Rattle and Roll which story gave travesty and frigid scares (if not titillating) to the people back then. With the immaculate 16 years old Janice De Belen on the lead role, the film managed to air a strangely haunting ‘rape‘ tale out of a fornicating “Pridyider“.

Rico Maria Ilarde  (Altar, Villa Estrella, Shake Rattle & Roll 2k5 segment “Aquarium”) was hired to pen and direct the movie which stars Andie Eigenmann, JM de Guzman and  Janice De Belen. Together with Joel Torre, Baron Geisler, Bekimon and introducing Venus Raj.
