Title: LOST Pinoy Films
Post by: keating on Feb 17, 2006 at 05:03 PM
This thread is dedicated to Filipino films that are presumably lost, neglect and doesn't exist anymore and sometimes lurking in other countries. Let's start with the great Lino Brocka's directorial debut.....WANTED:PERFECT MOTHER.

Most of Sine Pilipino Prods. like Bernals' ZOOM, ZOOM SUPERMAN, SI POPEYE ATBP cannot be found anymore. Film curator Teddy Co even ask Elwood Perez & Joey Gosiengfiao who were Douglas Quijano's co-producer during its time attest that they can't find a copy anymore.

Here are some LOST FILIPINO FILMS:

DAIGDIG NG MGA API- said to be the HOLY GRAIL OF PHILIPPINE CINEMA
EL FILIBUSTERISMO
WANTED: PERFECT MOTHER
ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN
SI POPEYE ATBP.
BINHI
SUPERGIRL
ELEKTRIKA
BAGONG HARI

this is true. even Elwood Perez doesn't have copies of the movies he did for Sine Pilipino. Joey Gosiengfiao on the other hand still owns a 35mm print of his film La Paloma Ang Kalapating Ligaw with Celia Rodriguez & Orestes Ojeda. i understand that Cinema One is trying to buy the rights for the film. hopefully they'll get to show it or better yet they should have an Elwood Perez/Joey Gosiengfiao film retrospective.

Its about time for Gosiengfiao/Perez film retrospective, even Zafra believes in the artistry of the duo. What Brocka & Bernal cannot touch, the two can divulge.

La Paloma was the last black and white Filipino film or is it Bernal's PAGDATING SA DULO, Jo?

i totally agree with you on this one... both Perez & Gosiengfiao deserve a film retrospective of their own.

i'm not quite sure whether La Paloma was the last black & white Filipino film although i remember watching Si Popeye Atbp. in graiy black & white as well...

If you can dig SUPERGIRL with Pinky Montilla, Jo, you'll definitely save Philippine Cinema from further extinction.

That movie was way, way ahead of its time and definitely better than the Helen Slater crap film. Never mind if the music was copied from Coffin Joe Trilogy, or is it the other way around?

this is one movie i would kill to have in my collection... it was produced by Prima Productions. remember the giant frog that trampled Mildred Ortega & Ike Lozada the village idiot who kept on running holding his slippers & was stuck by a bamboo? i used to have a copy of Fantastika Vs. Wonder Woman with Pinky Montilla & Alma Moreno. someone borrowed the tape from me & never returned it.

Post by: keating on Feb 20, 2006 at 06:14 PM
Yeah, I remember it. It was like a broken record which was shown on tv many many times during the 70's. My sympathy goes to Ike Lozada. And Jo, remember the scene at the church where Montilla tries to pacify the zombies by sneaking and pulling them inside and make the sign of the cross?!

The atmosphere was superbly eerie and creepy!  :o You don't want to sleep in that town again.

And Odette Khan, the villain......those eyes!  ;D

Gerry de Leon's films, almost all are lost. Manuel Conde's films, almost all are lost. Premier lost their best works, no thanks to a labor revolt. And what about those produced by Lea Productions and other independent outfits?

The sad thing is that very few peeps  are into archiving and most of today's generation don't give a crap 'bout tagalog movies, particularly our classics. And those who do--Teddy Co, Kuya Cesar, Doy del Mundo, Jo Atienza (but she's in the States now)--aren't getting any younger.

Sigh.

What Gerry de Leon film was found by Teddy overseas, RMN? Or is it a Manuel Conde classic? I let my nephew and niece watch ITIM, and MAGNIFICO. I'm surprised that they like it.

It was set in WWII and it was about a woman who takes over the identity of her paternal twin gay brother, who was a soldier, so she can be closer to the man she loves, who is also a soldier? TUKO SA MADRE KAKAW (1958/LVN) Philippines.
Credits: Dir: Richard Abalardo.
Cast: Vic Diaz, Nita Javier, Willie Sotelo, Hector Reyes, Elena Balmori.
A mad scientist, (Diaz), plots to conquer the world by using a serum that can turn ordinary animals into giants.

Although i haven't seen it.  My friends says it's a classic.  Inspiration daw for Jurassic Park hehehe

The likes of Elwood Perez, Joey Gosiengfiao & Gil Portes gush over Gerry de Leon's DAIGDIG NG MGA API. That makes this film a stiff competition against Brocka's MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG. But Maynila has the edge since its still available for viewing on cable and the print still exists.

Lilibeth Vera-Perez one of the children of the late Dr. Jose Perez of Sampaguita Pictures is currently looking for a clear copy of ROBERTA. The Mars Ravelo classic that saved Sampaguita Pictures from bankruptcy back in the 50's that made Tessie Agana a household name. I remember watching her in BUNSONG KERUBIN. I doubt also if this film still exists. She's willing to pay as high as she could provided the film is still in clear copy condition.

Over 600 movies were produced by Sampaguita Pictures during the 1st Golden Age of Philippine Cinema, and only around less than 100 were saved. When she returned from the U.S. she found only 20 films in their vault which includes the Alma Moreno starrer, EVA FONDA 16, DYESEBEL, and some Nora-Tirso movies. She sold those films to Ricky del Rosario of Viva Films which acquired the rights over the movies and paid her P300,000 which she used in setting-up the film archive of Sampaguita Pictures.

what the article said is true... although the CCP and NCCA should not limit the archiving of films to just the best ones. even those so-called pene movies of the 80's should be kept for the simple reason that they also played an integral part in the history of Philippine Cinema
Title: Re: LOST Pinoy Films
Post by: keating on Jan 26, 2007 at 08:13 PM
Yeah, they should be documented also. Even the porn ones in the U.S. are remastered digitally. Sure those films are trash......but they made history.

The generation today doesn't even know Brocka or Bernal.

Jojo does Regal Films still maintain an archive or they sold all of the masterprints of their films to Abs-Cbn?
Title: Re: LOST Pinoy Films
Post by: jdv1229 on Jan 26, 2007 at 08:16 PM

Title: Re: LOST Pinoy Films
Post by: keating on Jan 26, 2007 at 08:21 PM
We should be thankful to Abs-Cbn for archiving those films, disappointing sometimes because they show it at odd hours, not on primetime.

I was introducing the films of Mike de Leon, Brocka and Bernal, Gallaga and O'Hara to my nephew and niece now and they beginning to grasp it finally. They have to endure them because they can't watch any Harry Potpot movies if they skip it.  ;D

They can't appreciate the black and white Filipino films, I don't know why?! I bet there are still prints of Pinoy films in channel 13  since they are the premiere station during the 70's and 80's. The network is now on sale same with RPN 9.

the only scene missing in Tatlong Taon was the sinungaling! sinungaling! scene. as it turned out FAMAS asked NV Productions to send them a clip they could show while announcing the nominees so Pearl Valdez cut the scene out from the master negative and sent it to them.... hopefully that secen is sitting somewhere at the FAMAS office.

They cut it straight from the master negative? How would they able to restore it? O'hara attended the TATLONG TAON screening recently at the CCP.

Too bad I missed it.

yup! O'Hara was there and Bembol Roco as well... i think they screened the restored 35mm copy which is exactly the same copy they show on cinema one. i have no idea how they can put the scene back but the story about that missing scene came from Ate Guy herself.

Bernal has an edge over Brocka when it comes to film debut. Brocka tackled the conventional komiks formula while Bernal did more original and compelling.

Maricel, or Marya, was our neighbor in Makati when we were kids in the 70s. She and her family, her dad Boy Soriano and her sister, Vicki, lived in an apartment right across the street from our house. We used to go out with our families to harrison plaza and some fairs. I doubt if she still remembers me though, it's been almost 30 years

Maybe they haven't update their catalogue. You can watch the films inside of their screening room for 50 bucks. CCP reminds me of Manila Film Center, the hallway creeps me everytime I go there.

That's awful! Can't we just donate our archives to wealthy countries that can keep (and probably restore) them for us? They can use any revenues from distributing copies of the film to pay for storage/restoration. Also, what's the possibility that some of these films might be available outside the country?

Shown on free TV last night, which I had the priviledge to see, was Paano na ang kahapon kung wala na ang Ngayon, one of the unrecognized masterpieces of Philipine Cinema. I didn't get to catch the director but I must say that the acting all around--Christina Gonzales in particular--was superb! And the dialogue, oh the the dialogue! The most smart, profound and wittiest ever to grace the big screen! Riveting storyline too, which kept me on the edge of my seat. Why, oh why, haven't the critics taken notice of this gem? In my by book, this ranks as a classic among Pinoy melodramas. Bar none. No debate.

LIPAD, DARNA, LIPAD! Touted as the best Darna movie ever made directed by Emmanuel Borlaza, Joey Gosiengfiao and Elwood Perez released in March 23, 1973 from Sine Pilipino Prods. The print is now considered lost. The showdown between Vilma Santos and Gloria Romero as the Impakta at the top of the church is a must see in this movie. Celia Rodriguez in the camp vignette in another episode as Valentina  provides the famous line as she sees Darna flying over Rizal Park at lunch time......"sino ang babaeng yan na mababa ang lipad?!  ;D

Hi there! May I also add another LOST Pinoy film? This was the landmark film "LIPAD, DARNA, LIPAD" which catapulted Star for all Seasons VILMA SANTOS (now the Governor-elect of Batangas) to MOVIE QUEEN status. Released in March 1973, this trilogy broke all existing box-office records at that time with Vilma eclipsing all her contemporries including her biggest rival at that time.

"LIPAD, DARNA LIPAD" featured Vilma Santos as Darna and alter ego Narda. Based on the famous Mars Ravelo character and produced by Sine Pilipino, the first episode "Babaing Impakta" was directed by Emmanuel Borlaza with GLORIA ROMERO playing Darna's "manananggal" nemesis; the second episode "Babaing Ahas" was directed by Elwood Perez with CELIA RODRIGUEZ playing Valentina (in my opinion the best Valentina of them all); and the third episode "Babaing Lawin" was directed by the late Joey Gosiengfiao with LIZA LORENA playing the hawkwoman. "Lipad" was the greatest Darna film ever made and the producers have reported this monumental film as LOST with no surviving copies whatsoever!

Two (2) other Sine Pilipino productions which were also huge solo hits for Vilma prior to this Darna film are also LOST. These are "TAKBO, VILMA, DALI!" (1972), a suspense thriller where Vilma starred with the late great Miss RITA GOMEZ, and "HATINGGABI NA, VILMA!" (1972), another thriller where Vilma was pitted against veteran actress BARBARA PEREZ. Both films were written and directed by JOEY GOSIENGFIAO.

For any info on these LOST CLASSICS, please text me at 0917-884 8503 or contact the administrator of www.vilmasantos.net.

Thanks!

hello.
just found this site a few days ago.

nakakamiss talaga...thanks ....sorry mahaba

BINHI
SUPERGIRL
ELEKTRIKA
BAGONG HARI

FWI my friend found  the reel, isang can of Elektrika Kasi eh' kaya nga lang mahal daw ang pa transfer nito, and he's not sure kung ito ay boung pelikula. Also nakita din nya same place ung Darna at Impakta at malutong na raw ung negatives nito. Supergirl was shown sa Sky Cable at colored pa ito.

i dont know if this has been asked before, but i need to say it.  how come there are existing prints of old 50s and 60s movies while some of the classic films of an era as recent as the 70s are lost?  It's really depressing to think that we've lost a great part of filipino legacy with these movies.
kunsabagay, just watching old 80s films on cinema one, you really notice how badly discolored and out of focus some of the movies are.

Most of Sine Pilipino Prods. and those rare Pinoy films have been shown on channel 13 back in the late 70's up to the early 80's. If you grew up during those years, you are lucky enough to catch those films including ELEKTRIKA, SI POPEYE ATBP and ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN. I believe the umatic transfer was on their archive but got lost after the Edsa Revolution.

The Edsa revolt shut down also the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.

Desperately seeking ‘Burlesk Queen’

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 07:22:00 12/31/2007

MANILA, Philippines – Hailed by some critics as a modern Filipino movie classic, “Burlesk Queen” is also something of a Holy Grail for film archivists.

According to urban legend, a copy of “Burlesk Queen” was irretrievably lost after a storage room in the Manila Film Center was flooded following heavy rains sometime in the 1980s.

Film archivist Teddy Co, however, told Inquirer Entertainment that the last known copy of “Burlesk” had been damaged “in a film laboratory’s warehouse, not at the MFC, but also because of a sudden downpour.”

Co said, “Film archives have three known enemies: flood, fire and war. That’s why we have recovered very few films from the 1930s and 1940s.”

But Celso Ad. Castillo’s “Burlesk Queen” is a fairly recent movie. It was the controversial landslide winner in the hotly contested 1977 Metro Manila Film Festival.

In a recent interview with Inquirer Entertainment, Castillo corrected the impression that his film was “lost forever.”

“I was told by [producer] Manny Nuqui that a copy was found in Germany,” Castillo said. “And I heard that the current owner has a high asking price. Maybe he is aware of the film’s importance.”

Nuqui, president of the Philippine Motion Pictures Producers Association (PMPPA), confirmed that he had heard of an existing copy of “Burlesk” in Europe.

“Mowelfund was tasked to recover it years after its producer, Ian Film Productions, sold it abroad in the late 1970s,” Nuqui related.

Nick Deocampo, Mowelfund director, informed Inquirer Entertainment that “Burlesk Queen” is available on VCD. “But it’s blurry,” he said, “made from a Betamax copy.”

He also said that Mowelfund had traced “negative and print copies” to the present owner, Manfred Diurneok, based in Frankfurt, Germany.

Deocampo recalled that, a few years back, Diurneok had asked Mowelfund for “round-trip business class tickets” so terms of the resale could be negotiated in Manila.

“It was a reasonable request,” Deocampo noted, “but no one picked it up, and the deal fell through.”

Could “Burlesk” ever come home?

Castillo certainly hopes so.

The film is occasionally aired on cable TV, he said. “But watching it on the big screen is a completely different experience.”

Just as optimistic about the “Burlesk” retrieval is its lead star, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos.

“‘Burlesk’ is one of my favorite movies,” she said. “It was a turning point in my career. From my pa-sweet image, I dared become a more serious actress.”

New here.  Anyway, I was excited to find out about this.  So, are there any developments?

As for the topic, I would like to add a few:

One is Tarzan vs Tansan starring Vic Vargas and Dolphy

Another film also stars Vic Vargas but I can't remember the title.  Basta the story revolved around twins in Bataan during WW2.  In the end, one of the twins died while they were trying to escape when Bataan fell.  This movie got me really interested in war movies, and I remember watching this over and over again.  Anyone remember the title of this movie?
