Samsung SH-B022 Blu-ray burner
(http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/9275/samsungbluraydrivetf2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

"It's not every day you get to play with a pre-production Blu-ray burner, but the team at Germany's CT Magazine were able to get their hands on a Samsung SH-B022, and liked what they saw. The burner, which doesn't have AACS copy-protection, was able to burn a 25GB disc in about 43 minutes, and had no trouble playing a range of CDs and DVDs. The reviewers also found that the drive didn't generate as much heat as some other models they've tested; it reached a manageable 107 degrees after a burn. The final model is due out in April for about $500, and will include copy protection, along with the ability to write double-layer 50GB discs."

Sony BWU-100A $750

(http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/5575/bwu100anx5.th.jpg) (http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bwu100anx5.jpg)

Sony’s first generation Blu-ray Disc drive for the computer offers the best of all worlds by recording virtually all BD/DVD/CD disc formats in one internal package. The BWU-100A drive supports recording both 50GB and 25GB BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs, as well as 4.7 GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM, 8.5GB DVD+R Double/Dual Layer, and CD-R/-RW discs. Because you can store up to 4 hours of 1080 HD video on a single dual layer 50G BD disc, the BWU-100A is the perfect solution for keeping High Definition video shot on your HDV camcorder in native HD. Boasting up to 50GB of online, random access storage, BD discs are ideal for computer backup and data storage applications. Since the BWU-100A can record DVDs and CDs, all your burning projects can be handled by a single drive. Comprehensive Cyberlink® software suite is included to author BD and DVD discs as well as general disc burning for BD/DVD/CDs. Works with Windows® XP and Windows 2000 PCs.

i saw an LG Bluray / HD DVD ---internal CD Drive selling for about 9200 ~ 9500 in the Vmall area.

Another BluRAY READ ONLY drive available for 6500 also in the Vmall Area.

I guess these might be good alternatived instead of buying a BD player for about 18k (sony Ps3)

I'm still holding purchase until DEC... I'm sure pricess will drop in 4 months time...

Can a Bluray optical drive be placed on an external enclosure and play BDs flawlessly via USB?

Quite likely not yet.   SATA ang usual interface ng internal BD drives up to now.  So what should work is an SATA or eSATA extender, tapos SATA cable between the PC and the optical drive.

Kung interested ka sa USB 2.0 interface, got to buy one of those new external BD drives like this.

Blu Ray is the future.

Once the price becomes more affordable (Blu Ray RW Discs) I will surely get one of these.

I will use it mainly for data storage, and not be stupid enough to decrypt those Blu Ray Movies, and copy it's image file as back up.

Imagine the 25Gig capacity of a single layer Blu Ray Disc, it's hard to be a Standard DVD loyalist, when the storage capacity has magnified 4.5 times.

If I remember right, it took 3 years for the DVD burners to become the standard in most desktops, I hope it'll be shorter for the Blu Ray.  ;)

23K and Up Blu-Ray HTPC ka na. ;D

OO' nga pala ang hassle lang, mukhang Vista ang OS na kailangan, para sa darating na 64 Bit. :P

BD Burner Ninja Bro?  I checked the cheapest internal BD burner in Tokyo tonight.  LG pa rin ang champion (Blue something model?) but it's still like 8K pesos equivalent.  Mas mura pa dyan if 7K.

I’ve been wanting to purchase a decent Blu-ray Writer here in the Philippines for quite some time now but couldn’t find any store selling one and with available stock. Only found one shop carrying a nice internal model which is the ASUS 16X BW-16D1HT PRO (http://www.asus.com/Optical-Drives-Storage/BW16D1HT_PRO/). Sadly they are also out-of-stock.

Blu-ray Writers are the ideal media to use for backups. Those models with support for BDXL and M-disc technology are the best because they can use discs which can store up to 128 GB of files and/or can last up to 1,000 years! Blu-ray Writers are also a very good alternative or an extra protection to expensive RAID-capable Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices.

I hope more people and local shops will realize the advantages in using Blu-ray Writers and Discs especially for backup purposes.
