I have a question for you all  ??? .  What is the difference between an Region 3 DVD from a Region 1?  It seems that in our country, DVD collectors prefer R1 than R3.  Is this because of the quality/special features of the DVDs or is it just because we are so enchanted by anything from the US  ??? ?

My apologies if it seemed that Im a bit judgemental  :-\ . I am also part of that group who prefers Region 1 DVDs.  But really, what is the difference between R1 and R3?

newbie question,

in connection with mackieboy's query,
kung Region 3 tayo how come most people are buying R1's?  does this mean that the DVD player can play any version?  or do i have to specifically buy a DVD player for a certain region?

thanks.

Most people prefer R1 dvds because these are the ones released in the US, and these dvds usually has the best feature sets among all other regions of the same title.

But, in order to play R1 dvds, your player should be capable of doing so. So if you're buying a dvd player, make sure it's multiregion, meaning, it can play all regions.

played star wars  "the" new hope and it played the thx video in the beginning but it said "thx laser disc".

why is that so?

is there an faq for determining whether a dvd is not original?  in case somebody sells a boxed dvd and the works but included a pdvd

is there an faq for determining whether a dvd is not original?

I don't think there's an F.A.Q.  You can actually verify because there is an R1 DVD Release Calendar (http://www.pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?board=27;action=display;threadid=387) and the R3 Release Calendar (http://www.pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=8128).  So you basically get a guide as to what DVDs are already out.  There are plenty of Release Announcements online, some even have list as far as mid-2003 (when the DVD itself is still under production).  Once you've found the title on the list, then you'll know that it has been officially out. And if it's not there and you have a supposedly DVD copy  :o, chances are it ain't the real thing. :-\

As to whether or not the first Star Wars movie has ever been released on DVD, you may check other online sites. George Lucas has time and again said that he has yet to release this on DVD and it could take awhile.  There's a thread here that discusses that but I'm sorry I can't provide the link here (search function is not working).  :)

Post by: CrUzSACK on Dec 10, 2002 at 10:04 PM
Oh and the copy you were asking about --- thx laser disc? If I'm not wrong, that's a Star Wars movie copied from the laser disc. There is no, (never was) Star Wars (Princess Leia era) DVD yet --- Episode 4-6, according to official sites like www.theforce.net and www.starwars.com

thanks for the input.

as for an original dvd case wherein the content is swapped with a pdvd (of course not the star wars, others), there's no telling then huh?

what i know about these region codes is that the only serve to set boundaries where a particular dvd can only be played to a particular geopolitical region. R1 dvd are intended to be played only in US areas and are supposed to not be able to be played in dvd players released in R2 countries or R3, etc. R2 countries are the european countries, middle east and japan. R3 are the southeast asian countries like the philippines. China i think is of R6. R0 are those dvd that are region-free. But then there are already technologies now that can decode dvd-players to play dvd that are of different region codes

Perhaps, the differences in quality between the dvd can be ultimately explained by these set geopolitical boundaries.

Hi.  I'm new here.  I have a question...  Can i just connect my xbox to an a/v receiver via the standard RCA cables and have a 5.1 sound?  Or coax/optical cables are necessary to have a 5.1 sound? Thank you.
Title: Re:NEWBIES Read this first: DVD FAQ
Post by: viper on Jun 25, 2003 at 09:44 PM
I may be wrong but your material must have 5.1 information to be extracted by the a/v receiver.
Title: Re:NEWBIES Read this first: DVD FAQ
Post by: Ki on Jun 26, 2003 at 10:46 AM
so what if my material has 5.1 information, di pa rin pwede RCA cables? dapat talaga digital cables para 5.1 yung sound?

Post by: Steel on Jun 26, 2003 at 11:09 AM
Hi Ki,

Welcome to PinoyDVD!  ;D

I have an Xbox too.  In order for you to experience 5.1 sound, you do need to get the Advanced AV pack and hook your Xbox up to an AV reciever using an optical cable.

The RCA cables won't give you 5.1 sound.

Don't worry about the material of the Xbox.  Most, if not all of the games have 5.1 surround sound in-game.

 :o  ;D :o Dear Everyall,

New member here, obviously...  nakakalokah ang message board nah itoh, napaka-informative!  I have been glued to the PC since I discovered this site!  Lotsa catching up to do.  Big shout sah mgah founders and moderators... at CONGRATULATIONS!

Anyway, I've been working at the Virgin Megastore here in Dubai since a month before it opened more two years ago.  Ditoh nah akoh namulat sah mgah "luho" products such as SACDs, DVDs, PS2, X-Box, Gamecube and Gameboy XP!  I was basically a CD collector but now I can't get enough of
these damned DVDs!

Hopefully, given my limited online time, I could help give you some insights on DVDs based on my first-hand experience here at Virgin and as a "bona-fide DVD collector", kahit paunti-unti lang.  By the way, what makes up a "DVD aficionado"?

Being a newbie here, I know how time-consuming it is to go over everything that's been discussed.  But if you were to buy or should I say "invest" on a DVD player (prior to a home theatre system), piliin nyoh nah ang "multi-system" DVD player kahit medyoh mahal.

More later...  ;D ;D ;D

hi everyone... im a newbie in the dvd world and im totally clueless.  ???

my sister, who's in manila (im in CA) wants me to get her dvds. i had no clue before about the whole region thing since my player here is for R1 dvds and the dvds sold here in the US are, of course, R1 encoded.

so i got her several movies, but then she told me that it was indicated in her player that it can only play R3 dvds. i had to return everything i got her BUT she told me recently that she tried an R1 dvd and it worked on her player... so now i'm REALLY confused.

will R1 dvds work on an R3 player?

help!!!

R1 can be played on a R3 player provided its been modified.

Some players here in manila are already region free, meaning it can play any dvds.

hope this helps.  :)

by the way, send in the movies...  :D

thanks, galahad. :)

the thing is, her player isn't modified or whatever it is they do with 'em...  ;D

she just got the player, and she was surprised that she was able to play the R1 dvd. she's positive that its strictly an R3 player, so she wasn't expecting the R1 dvd to work.

now, was it just luck or can it really play R1 dvds? coz i am planning to send in the movies... ;)

Where nyo nabili? Sometimes, that's an indication that it is a bootleg/pirated copy. Majority of bootleg DVDs have DTS written on their covers, eventhough there are no DTS tracks.

Hi everyone!  I bought 3 dvds(Close Encounters of the 3rd kind, In the line of fire, Bad boys 2) for P 600.00 from Astrovision last weekend.  After watching In The Line of Fire, I noticed that there are scenes that are pixalated.  Bad Boys 2 audio is in 2 channel & in DVD 5 only.  Both dvds have an AVIDPHIL sticker on them.  Are these  dvds locally manufactured?

Sir, local releases on sale are usually DVD-5s. They are oftentimes manufactured somewhere else. Very poor in quality IMHO.

Get R1 or other region's releases instead.

Yes, those that you bought are, unfortunately.

For a rather accurate guide on DVD quality of local R3 releases (mostly how to tell if you're buying a locally-pressed DVD5 or an imported DVD9), please read techdude's post on this thread (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=61337.msg648810#msg648810).

Question:

I used to collect pirated DVDs and would always look for the Malaysia version (as opposed to China version na copied from R3 original) since they are copied from R1 dvd and would always boast of their DTS track. Now, I've been collecting original DVDs and still look for those with DTS track. I've just observed na mas malakas and mas maganda yata DTS audio ng pirated kaysa DTS audio ng original DVDs na nabili ko. I would know kasi I would always set the volume at 15 (30 is maximum) of my DVD component. With my pirated DVDs, I would sometimes have to adjust the volume down to 12 kasi sobrang lakas and parang nayayanig yung house. But with my original DVDs, kahit DTS yung audio, yung volume 15 hindi kasing lakas ng pirated. PQ wise superior talaga orig pero I miss the earth-shaterring DTS sound. Is it because R3 yung original ko and yung pirated DVDs R1?

im not an expert but maybe i can help... i dont think na since its an R3 dvd thats the problem. because even if like you said your p****** copy is copied from R1, nababago pa din yung quality nun because of the size of the disc they're using. most dvds use double sided dvd9 discs, while yung p****** uses only single sided dvd5. so the smaller the space on the disc, mas compressed yung files so it sacrifices the quality, PQ and SQ wise.

are you using a DVD component with how many speakers sir? are you using a full 5.1 system? the reason im asking is, baka kaya you're saying before na sobra lakas ng p****** with DTS compared to an original with DTS is because the p******* disc may not have the same detail as the original disc. baka nga malakas siya, pero nde naman the same ang quality ng sound and detail. for me, its really not yung lakas but also the quality of the sound that you hear, the details of the scene that you're watching. like in subtle sound effects, yung rain scenes in ratatouille, scenes in master commander where you hear footsteps on top of you...  madami pa examples pero i cant think if anything more.

can you give me an example of an orig DVD that you have na mahina ang sound? maybe i can check if indeed mahina yung sounds niya...

for me, original is still the way to go for great PQ and SQ. but thats just me. hope this helps a bit.  ;)

just my 2 cents...  :D

Yeah, I'm using a full 5.1 system--sub, center speaker, left and right speakers, and left and right surround speakers. I haven't really thought about listening intently to those subtle but important little sounds and make the comparison. My focus right away, I guess, is the volume and intensity of the sound. I definitely will when I get home. While we're at it, does it then follow that the DTS track of R1 and R2 DVDs are of the same quality? For a while, I thought I should better order R1 DVDs through amazon because I might I enjoy the DTS sound that I've now been missing. Thanks!

but thats just me... maybe we can wait for our gurus to reply as well...  goodluck!  :D

In maybe rare cases siguro. But normally they should be pretty much the same.

Thing that ticks me off between R1 and R3 is the prints on the covers and the quality of the cases.

I agree. Another thing I hate with R3 is not all R1 movies are available in R3. >:(

...and dont forget what happened last year to some of the R3 releases wherein there are local commercials which cannot be fastforwarded and you're forced to watch! :-\ (ex. spiderman 3 in jewel case)

and there were also some r3 release na nakalagay sa back part ng cover 5.1 audio pero 2 ch lang (ex. fracture).
