Yes. I suggest you go early.  Sometimes they bring in new titles per day but only limited in stock.  This way, you have first crack at the fresh titles on sale.

I'm usually very picky with my DVD's so it's very seldom I buy more than two items at these sales.

That said, I'm very frustrated that I can't find Blow-Up.

Yari ako pag labas ng credit card bill... :D

Shoot! I totally forgot to pick up Charlotte's Web when I saw it. yesterday afternoon.

Anyway, I got the following discounted titles:

Circque du Soleil - Corteo @ Php 199
Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy @ Php 250
Doctor Zhivago (2 Dual Sided Discs) @ Php 299

The following I got at full price:

Notes On A Scandal @ Php 550
Paprika @ Php 695

A good sale overall. Though I wish Magna and Viva had brought down their months-old 2007 releases to the Php 333 and 299 levels, such as Apocalypto (still Php 550), The Pursuit of Happyness (slowly getting there at Php 550) and Children of Men (which is not even part of the Buy 1 Take 1 promo).

There was a misprice that happened Friday morning.  When I came back in the afternoon, all the James Bond DVDs and other MGMs were already @ P299.  The VIVA management daw corrected this mistake.  Lucky for those who bought @P100!!! Including moi!

Anyway, if VIVA increased the P100s, Magnavision were kind enough to decrease dvds to P199!  Here's my second loot for the day --

all imported and not budget
Sixteen Candles   P199
The Passenger P199
The Debut P199 ( got 2 copies for christmas gifts )
Dragonheart   P199
Daddy Day Care   P199
Identity  P199
Spanglish P 199
Vampire Hunters P 199

Audio CDs (P100 & P70)

Joe Satriani
Live, Best of ( my best steal for the day @ P70 )
2 more Pearl Jam Acoustic Live
Korn ( not a fan but there's a bonus DVD concert )
Dire Straits, best of
U2 How to dismantle an atomic bomb

Whew!  Whatta sale... one of the best ever!!!

The VIVA DVDs were sold last week at P150.OO and P250.00 at the SM MAKATI Dept. Store.  And I heard from some insiders that they would be selling these 299 titles at between 150 to 250 pesos per again soon.  As to the Magna titles, it is really annoying and mind boggling on how they find ways to confuse their customers.  From 333pesos(as a sale price for their original prices), they now have 299, 250, 199, 150 pesos titles.   It was so confusing that I saw somebody arguing with the people in Astro the other night regarding the 895 pesos Dvds.  This girl got around 50 titles and when she was about to pay, the computer yielded different discounted prices for the dvds.  I tried to take a look and it was mostly Columbia, Sony and Universal dvds. Another thing about their Universal dvds, they put a sticker saying its an imported dvd but what is really inside is a local repoductiion as what the magna supervisor told some guy who was asking how come there are no special features in these Universal dvds!  Unlike the Warner titles which are mostly made in Taiwan.  Now, if one likes classic movies, you can find many classic titles in the Warner library which are real imported dvds.  I bought around 14 of these dvds which were priced between 175 - 299 pesos which proved to be of more value than the Magna titles.  I think it's time that Columbia or Sony Pictures take over from Magna to protect their movies.  Sometimes, the way Magna packs their Dreamworks, Universal titles makes one want to buy the pirated dvds instead!  By the way, saw the Spiderman 2 Boxset and Da Vinci Code Box set, these were selling for less than half (Spiderman 2) and less 700pesos (Da Vinci Code).  Did anyone notice that the people outside the store were selling the puzzle (which came free with offer before for Da Vinci Code) for 300 pesos!!!

I just got back from Podium, I had to replace one item. Then they told me about what transpired last night. They were able to close or pack-up around 1AM iso 11PM. The cause, there was this one pain in the *ss customer who came around 10PM, he got all the titles he wanted, the problem started when this crazy guy demanded that all the DVD's he chose be priced 299, like the Mi III, Notes on a Scandal, etc. When he buys one title, he wants all the stocks to be brought out so he can choose (he wants a perfectly plastic wrapped piece >:( ). This supposedly Chinese looking guy was a regular, but it was his first time last night to act that way, which I find not normal. If the item is not on sale, then its not on sale, why does he have to make the promo girl cry, argued until 1AM, and held almost all the staff in the store. ? Mr. Harry ______ ! I hope and pray that you are not a part of this community!  You do not deserve those DVD's, if I were you, go to Metrowalk and buy your dibidis there, then do your thing again, I bet,  a headless chicken will emerge from Metrowalk. ! The DVD that I got from the sale (Lord of the Rings: Fellowship) skipped around 88 mins into the movie.
I haven't encountered anything like this...a movie from a reputable store skipping.
So I am wondering if I can still ask for a repalcement of the DVD that I got or I am stuck with this?

jeyps11_c,

ask them for a replacement.  just bring your receipt and show it to them. tell them your problem and most probably, they will have it changed into a new copy.

Accomodating naman ang mga tao sa Astro Podium.  ;)

hope this helps.  ;)

! Bubblehead.  :P

There's a weirdo in every world, no matter the race, status or gender.   Looking for a perfect shrink-wrap in a DVD is weird indeed, especially if it's not a limited or some special editions.   The fact that it's the first time he acted that way, makes it even more peculiar, baka naka-inom or the full moon is out last night... ;)

how i wish i got these CD's...  :'( :'( :'(  felt bad we weren't able to go back anymore.  :( :( :(  got around 18 CD's during the 1st day, some 2 discs, and the korn CD with dvd even if i wasnt a fan of this type of music. sayang kasi, it was a good buy for the free live dvd concert.  ;)  any news when they will have the same CD sale?

The DVD that I got from the sale (Lord of the Rings: Fellowship) skipped around 88 mins into the movie.
I haven't encountered anything like this...a movie from a reputable store skipping.
So I am wondering if I can still ask for a repalcement of the DVD that I got or I am stuck with this?

The people in Astro Podium are very very nice and professional.  As long as you have receipt and your complaint is valid, they will replace your dvd.  No problem there!

I saw Hero at Mega Mall Odyssey early this year but was selling at P550 ( or P750? ).  Why don't you try to call podium and ask if they stock pa? Number is 6877411.

Agree to that. I called them this afternoon about replacing one of the DVDs I got from the sale last saturday. It was a loose disc and there's some heavy scratches. I asked if it was still ok to replace the DVD with the same title given that they have a 3-day return policy. I only opened it this morning, kasi, and that's when I saw the damage.

The lady on the other end (I forget her name -- Ariel... Arlene... something) told me it was ok and to just pass by tomorrow anytime with the receipt. Yey for Astroplus Podium!

Now, the question is would they really honor that tomorrow...  ;D I'll just update you guys.

About that guy who was complaining about the shrink wrap on those dvds he was suppose to purchase and wanting the prices to be lowered to sale prices though those titles were not incoluded in the 3day sale.  I asked the staff in Astro Podium and inquired who this Harry guy was.  They told me that he indeed is a regular customer and quite an okay guy.  Hardly returns anything and does buy a lot.  It's just that the 3 people from Magna offered him to lower the prices on those titles that were not included in the sale to convince him to buy some more (since it was Sunday night, siguro they wanted to generate more sales?).  It's just that when he was about to pay, these 3 people from Magna suddenly got amnesia and denied the offer.  When the Astro staff investigated this matter Monday morning, they found out that indeed those titles chosen by this guy was suppose to have lower prices than regular.  It's just that the Magna promo girl forgot and just generalized everything in the regular prices group can't be given discounts.  This promo girl was reprimanded by both the Astro and Magna officials.  The Astro staff even mentioned that 'nakakahiya' nga kay sir Harry kasi sinigawan pa siya ng promo girl ng Magna, eh ang mali naman ay sa mga tao ng Magna.  And it's not true that somebody from their store or from Magna cried.  Actually, they are trying to reach this guy and apologize.

Even after 4 days the Astro Podium people were quick to change my scratched disc with a new one. They didn't even question me after looking at my receipt. I find this highly unusual based on my experience with local stores, but highly appreciated nonetheless. It's refreshing.

By the way, I asked when the next warehouse sale would be. The woman behind the counter gave me a rather non-commital "Hindi po namin alam" without even looking at me -- which I found rather amusing, to say the least  ;D

So this is the reason why the customer stayed until 1am huh? This was not what I heard . Was he finally able to get the titles he wanted on sale? Like Mission Impossible III for 299 and others? Good for him.

If I were the Magna rep, (who supposedly cried) due to humiliation, she's too darn not to remember things she said to a certain Mr Harry ,given that he is known to be a regular customer and argued until closing time.

Anyway......when will be the next Bodega Sale?  :D

Because of that incident regarding a certain "harry", I just realized that I may have paid a higher price for my MI:3 2 DVDs copy which I got for 700 pesos.  So I inquired with the people at Astro Podium.  I then found out that this guy was not insisting on a 299 price but a 550pesos price.  The story behind this was that the Magna promo girl offered him the Ghost Rider 2DVD set for 550pesos (saying that it's really 700pesos, but if he wants to get it - she can lower the price to 550 (sales talk, because it's really 550pesos during the sale)).  Then the guy asked if the MI:3 2 DVDs which was also 700pesos, can be lowered  to 550 also.  She nodded and one of the sales girls beside them got it for him. But when he was about to pay, the promo girl denied she said yes and that probably got him angry.  Maybe, it's just a miscommunication.  This kind of incidents do happen.  And us customers should just be a little more understanding and likewise sales people or promo girls should just be more careful in giving discounts so as not to compromise their work.  I know they really have so many titles and compounding their work is the numerous versions of the same movie. Just like what happened before with Kung Fu Hustle (a Magna title) that had 3 versions and 3 prices.  This happened to me  before, when a Magna promo girl charged me the highest price for the cheapest version of this movie. Good thing I was a regular customer so she just told me to get another title to make up for the difference.

One time, I saw the James Dean DVDs ( all 3 of the 2 disc editions ) with a P275  sticker so I immediately grabbed all three!  However, at the back of my mind, this might be a mis price.  True enough, the cashier told me that it's not P275 but P350.  I still got them anyway.

Things like these happen.  Miscommunication is a fact of life.  People get confused.  What will all the sales happening around!  How many times have you seen a title on sale in one store and selling at regular price in the store right beside it?

Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.  That's the way it is.  Let's just be happy with all the DVD sales and price discounts going on.  It's dizzying, confusing sometimes yeah.  But I think this is more exciting than not having any sales at all?  That would be utterly lifeless and boring.

Medyo OT:

Is the DTS track DTS ES or DTS 6.1? It depends what kind of HT setup you have.

I have a 5.1 setup and sometimes, pag nag-switch ako sa  DTS 6.1 or DTS ES track na hindi rated sa setup ko, it comes off na parang walang difference siya sa Dolby 5.1 na track. I've heard this "non-difference" between Dolby and DTS with my Lord of the Rings DVDs and most recently, with my Pan's Labyrinth DVD.

What's your setup?

It should be in the language selection menu. Since you have the disc you can check if there are any options for "DTS". ;) If none, then there is no DTS and that's a misprint on the DVD case.

Unless, of course, you mean to ask if the DTS signal itself is really DTS. In that case, I don't know  ;D

The pioneer DV-400 has a DTS 2.0 down mix feature. I am only using 2 speakers (50w RMS) but with a stereo amp.
The DVDp does the encoding.

Huwag naman TV speakers lang!  :D

There you have it  :P

How can you tell the difference, when it's the DVD player that processed the audio, and downmixed it to analog output.  :'(

You'll have to utilize a coaxial or optical cable attached to an amplifier capable of decoding the DD/DTS mix, and once you have the proper equipment, you'll probably know the difference we were all talking about. 8)

Yes, the DVD player is the one processing the audio. Since it's capable of processing DTS audio even through 2 speakers only (DTS 2.0), it doesn't need digital cables (because the DVDp is the one processing, AV reciever not needed to process DTS).

I think analog signals can still process DTS.

Get a good amplifier, or borrow one, and you'll know what we are all talking about, since you have to experience it to know it. ;)

No sir, what I meant was that you don't need a co-axial or optical cable (digital) to hear the DTS encoding, since the pioneer DV-400 was the one processing the DTS 2.0 signal through analog cables (No need for a receiver). ;D Of course unless your talking about surround sound (5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1). I'm only asking about the quality of sound from the DTS feature, not the surround effects.

BTW, I'm using a stereo amp that's powering a pair of floorstanders. I've been using it for music and movies. 2 channel lang nga, but it's powerful enough even without a sub.  ;)

Anyway, OT na tayo. :)

I would just like to know if the War of the Worlds R3 DVD that I bought during the sale is "real" DTS or not.

I would just like to know if the War of the Worlds R3 DVD that I bought during the sale is "real" DTS or not.

Yes, it is real DTS.  What is specified in the package is what you get.  The thing is in some instances, the Dolby Digital 5.1 and the DTS will sound almost identical.  Again, it will depend on the Audio equipment that you are using.  In my case, I tried to listen to it again in my Yamaha HT setup (before I responded to you) to compare the DTS and the DD 5.1.  The DTS has a more smooth and powerful effect.  The dialogue in the front speakers is more crisp and clear.  The bass effect is also stronger in the DTS.  Both, however, are top notch quality and, shall I say, one that can be used for demo.

Here are some reviews on the audio of War of the Worlds to further prove my point:

dvdmg.com -

When I examined the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks of War of the Worlds, I found both to work very well. However, the DTS mix seemed noticeably stronger. I’ll discuss it first and then detail the reasons I preferred it to the Dolby track.

The soundfield presented an active and lively piece that constantly engaged the five main speakers. The film showed distinctive imagery throughout the movie that placed different auditory elements accurately within the spectrum and meshed them together nicely. Music provided strong stereo imaging, and effects popped up from the appropriate locations. Quieter scenes displayed natural ambience, while the many action set pieces involved engrossing and vibrant imaging. It became tough to pick a favorite sequence, but the opening attack probably remained my favorite due to the sheer impact of its chaos.

Audio quality also seemed positive. Speech consistently appeared natural and crisp, and I noticed no issues related to edginess or intelligibility. Music sounded bright and dynamic as the DVD neatly replicated the score. Effects packed a nice wallop when necessary, as these elements seemed clean and distinct at all times. Bass response came across as deep and tight, and the low-end added a good layer of depth and oomph to the package. This was a soundtrack to challenge your subwoofer, as it really administered a heavy punch. I thought this was a consistently amazing soundtrack that earned a rare “A+”.

Why did I prefer the DTS mix over the Dolby track? Because it created a more involving and smooth experience. At times, the Dolby soundfield could be a little awkward and “speaker-specific”, at least in comparison to the way the DTS edition blended its elements. I noticed transitions more obviously when I listened to the Dolby version. Also, bass response was stronger for the DTS track. The Dolby mix came across as a little wan by comparison.

Please note that these flaws only became apparent due to those comparisons. If you solely listened to the Dolby track, you’d probably think I was nuts because it sounded great. However, it just didn’t match up with the incredible DTS audio, and I thought the difference was substantial.

dvdauthority.com
[/b]

One thing that War of the Worlds does excel at is the sound. I listened to the DTS soundtrack and on more than one occasion had to turn it down. There are some subtle effects that come through the surrounds, but the major effects are in the subwoofer channel. I dont think Ive had my room shake like that in a while. Theres nothing to over the top about how this sounds, as weve never had alien invaders before its kind of hard to replicate what we think that sound might be like, ya know? The disc also includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that sounds nearly as good as the DTS. Suffice it to say the disc gets an A in this department.

So there.  Again, to answer your question.  Yes, War of the Worlds DTS is real and not, uhhh, pirated....

Now that's what I wanted to hear! ;D Thanks sir. Actually, I had a hard time comparing the DD to the DTS track, since I can't hear not much audible difference. Maybe it also depends on the scenes.

AFIAK, r3 dts titles are legit.  You won't really hear any audible difference on a stereo set up sir :)  Dts/DD  tracks for movies  are meant to be heard in 5.1 or 6.1 discrete channles for you to enjoy it.

However, it is my belief that if the store makes a mistake, they must make up for it.  I don't think its right that people will be excited about buying something thinking its a good buy.  Tapos pag-abot sa counter mali pala ang presyo.  Honest mistakes are honest mistakes pero if you are the guy who has lined up to pay you're almost forced to still buy the items otherwise, lalabas kang kuripot.  Problema pa kung sakto lang cash mo.  The embarrassment that will be caused the customer has to be considered by the establishments.  They have to live up to whatever mistakes they make.

O music Rockwel is on-sale, saw some boxsets at 50% off as well, but not that much titles though. I was there early so they might bring out some more later, better call first.
