Title: ANG PINAKA-MEMORABLE TV SITCOMS (JANUARY 13, 2008)
Post by: thegoodbyeguy on Jan 13, 2008 at 07:12 PM
This week's ANG PINAKA is truly one of pinoy's favorite pasttime. ANG PINAKA-MEMORABLE PINOY SITCOMS has a panelists of Ces Quesada, Carmen Go-Vargas - broadcaster, Romel Lalata - showbiz editor, Melvin Lee - stage actor and Andrew De Real - The Library owner. Here's the list:

    10. DUPLEX - classic! Too bad, no TV clips shown. :(
     9. PALIBHASA LALAKE - Strange but the only memorable episode I remember is the guesting of none other than Peque's titular horror character TIYANAK! And also during the entire series, Joey Marquez calling Cynthia Patag a Gremlin deadringer! ;D
     8. HOME ALONG DA RILES - this used to be really a fun family tv show until it went pffft!
     7. CHICKS TO CHICKS - Sexy short, shorts!  ;D Now I know, the word "manyakis" comes from maniac sa kiss! Clever but naughty! :D
     6. OKAY KA, FAIRY KO - Roderick Paulate as one-time Faye, now that's really funny!  :D
     5. OBER DA BAKOD – Janno Gibbs used to be funny here. From  :D to  :(
     4. TANG-TARANG-TANG - Sylvia La Torre, Pugo, Patsy. Vintage. ;)
     3. ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD NA KABANATA – one of the best sitcoms in recent years. ;)
     2. ISKUL BUKOL – I would really want this want in DVD. Imagine, a Pinoy Classic TV Series first time in DVD!
     1. JOHN EN MARSHA – ....and this one, too? Please...

TV Sitcoms then are really situational comedies.....

No Baltic and Company? Tisoy? Cafeteria Aroma? I think these three are better alternatives to ober da bakod or okay ka fairy ko (which was never funny!).

Now, Duplex... great choice there. Daddy Groovy is already part of Philippine pop culture. Same with the bumbling airhead maid Liweng. :)

Cafeteria Aroma. . . yes! Off the wall, bizarre and incredibly funny. Brother Manok, Johnson, Miniong at syempre si Uncle Apeng!

Much more than OK Ka Fairy Ko, I agree. Or even Home Along the Riles.

i was about to list na sana Sic O'Clock News, T.O.D.A.S., etc... but the former is more of political satire while the latter is a gag show. sa Duplex, i like most the character of soxy topacio and di ba dito rin si ms. dang cecilio? aaah, i could stare at the screen for hours pag siya ang naka-focus ng camera. sa cafeteria aroma naman, nakadikit pa rin sa isipan ko yung bading doon (johnson?), coz up till now i haven't figured out whether he's acting a character o bading tlaga siya. hehe. pero it's been some sort of a morning upper for me then and we even have black and white tv only. haaay... they don't make them as they used to. sad!  :(

siguro, it's becoz they aren't as ratings driven then.  >:(

The only way to describe Cafeteria Aroma is a post modern sitcom. It deviated from the traditional sitcom formula and really did it well. I've always considered Apeng Daldal a genius for conceptualizing that show.

Another "kind of" postmodern sitcom was U.F.O. (Urbana, Felisa, and Others). Mitch Valdez was the life of that show and not Mang Truman (Lou Veloso) who was the breakout character.

Anna Lorraine Kier was in Duplex and not Dang Cecilio. :)

Another sitcom that should be added in the list (or a better alternative to the three questionable sitcoms in said list) is Eh Kasi Babae. That was the first sitcom that showcased the modern Filipina. And besides, I love Bessie Badilla, hehe!

I would have added EH KASI BABAE. Sexy comediennes then are 'funny'. It's good they haven't missed out DUPLEX and CHICKS TO CHICKS. JOHN EN MARSHA and ISKUL BUKOL are given. Dang Cecilio is such a  classic beauty even though she was not in any of the mentioned sitcoms. Or is she?

if i may add... Joey & Son may not be an all out comedy, but it was good during its run, too... and it introduced us to Ian Veneracion. then there's "sitak ni jack" topbilled by jay ilagan, manok ni san pedro (not too fond of it myself but it had it's loyal following), yung kina bistek, chichay, vic sotto & dina b. (di ko na marecall ang title).

"abangan..." was good because of the ensemble acting. lahat ng actors have well-defined characters and they did it well. walang mga parang wallflowers lang (like even with the "abangan.." reincarnation).

WIT........ that seems to be one other ingredient that current shows of this genre lacks.

seeing those iskul bukol tapes from this clip of the i-witness' tribute to the show, it's as if you're looking at a stash of hiidden treasure, much like gold... but priceless.

too bad palibhasa lalaki lost a lot of its luster the longer it stayed on air.  the dowsing with water gag was good the first time, but they made it mandatory for the next thousand times.  oh wait, it think they replaced it with arina

but the first couple of years were good and funny, i did follow that along with okay ka fairy ko.

how about gag shows?  TODAS, TVJ, Going Bananas?

I agree. Cafeteria Aroma instead of Ober Da Bakod.

Another one I remember as funnier than Ober Da Bakod is "Ang Manok ni San Pedro" starring Lito Pimentel and Balut.

Most (if not all) of the shows listed are shown at primetime.

Cafeteria Aroma was shown at 11 in the morning as I remember it.

mahirap na ata na same cast pa din. What with Nida Blanca dead and some of the TODAS crew with lucrative careers in other fields (Frida Fonda is a successful doctor in the US).

Anyway, John en Marsha has returned "sort of" with the John en Shirley sitcom.

Thanks! I remember watching Joey and Son; I was watching it when I was sick one time and was happy about that because I didn't have to go to school. Was it shown back-to-back with Duplex, where they played music from Devo?

Also, how about reviving this old thread

http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=43256.0

and posting schedules for some of these shows as well as other details. I just found out that several shows, like "Eh Kasi Babae," are not listed in IMDB. Maybe we can enter these and other shows in the database and come up with a website or web log focusing on Pinoy TV shows and maybe even radio programs from the past.

Duplex ended way before Joey and Son started. After Ading Fernando's death, Duplex only lasted barely a year before it went off the air.

Bring back ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD NA KABANATA. Joey Reyes' script is so witty and funny. Who can forget the TENGCO Family comprise of Cong. Tengco, his wife Barbara and Dino? There's Benny also and Nanette Inventor's sofa that has plastic that was never removed!

i'm just surprised at the number of viewers who can still remember and had fond memories of cafeteria aroma. sleeper hit pala ito.  :D nung palabas pa kasi siya, you wouldn't know kung marami ba kayong nanonood nito. we do watched it regularly, if not religiously.

guilty pleasure siya, in the same vein as perhapsstrangebrew - shows about nothing. sabi nga nung isang nabasa ko, pinapagalitan daw siya manood nanay niya kasi wala naman daw siyang makukuha dito. sabi nya, "bakit, can't you watch just for fun?" oo nga naman, yung fun part ang isa sa nawawala in some of the current comedy programs.

There's Benny also and Nanette Inventor's sofa that has plastic that was never removed!

o di ba, pati sofa eh palaging in character!!??? haha. it's this attention to detail that separates soso comedies from the just runs.

Excellent Bro!! I Love Cafeteria Aroma and was certainly in a league of its own. I remember dropping everything by 10 am just to watch this show. The comedy was truly situational, not slapstick and Apeng Daldal's (God bless his soul) comic timing was impeccable.

And talk about lists, here's mine:

1. Cafeteria Aroma
2. Iskul Bukol
3. John en Marsha
4. Fantastic Jean Young in Motion (remember this campy over the hill musicale-sitcom?)
5. Baltic & Company
6. Eh Kasi Babae
7. T.O.D.A.S.
8. Going Bananas
9. Buddy en Sol (Redford White was the Heart & Soul of this sitcom)

They did once sometime (ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD is the exact title if I recall) and ended up with missed witticism and satire. Joey failed to rekindle what luster the sitcom once has. :( Possibly one reason is because not ALL those colorful characters has returned.

I remember one fictional band featured in the show that was parodied from the then popular ERASERHEADS, it was called PENCILBRAINS! ;D

Are you referring to PTL (which means Praise The Lord) which I think airs early afternoon? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember O, SIGE. This is more of a gag show but has some sitcom-ish approach which I prefer over TVJ that also airs on Channel 13. I believe Lauren Dyogi (of PBB) is one of the unknown cast then.

There's also this PUGAD BABOY headed by Edgar Mortiz. It's a short-lived bland sitcom of a popular pinoy comic strip.

(pero you have to give the man props for his wits nga. tindi ng mga one liners nya and yung saluhan nila ni minyong ng punchlines.) i also used to watch this in my cousin's 20" b/w tv... pero ang ganda ng tv na  ito, super linaw.  :D

Cafeteria Aroma is a cult classic. :)

Prinsipe Abante was Bert Marcelo, am I right? I remember that being funny. Mr. Baltic played the King there, I remember, Tina Revilla was the princess and the late Inday Badiday's late husband(?) whose name escapes me at the moment played Abante's nemesis, I think. There was also a toothless guard named Clint or Cliff.

God, I feel old. ;D

They also cleverly spoofed the home video of the Webb family practicing their golf swings. Anjo, Noel and Joji discussing something completely unrelated to golf but swinging away. Classic! Any of you guys remember the actress/model who played the family lawyer?

Di ko na maalala the one who played the family lawyer. But Tessie Tomas was hilarious as Barbara Tengco. Nova Villa always slipped on the sofa of Nanette Inventor.  ;D

I even watched the movie version at the theatres.

I think there was a radio show decades earlier entitled "Prinsipe Amante" together with movies and comic books featuring the same character.

i actually mentioned it na in the previous pages. it was quite a departure for joey from his usual wacky self in his other sitcoms. medyo tamed siya rito and a bit more serious.

one other sitcom that we viewed regularly was "prrt... foul" nina jawo, arnaiz and pilita corrales. to think that at that time eh hate na hate ko si jawo as a basketball player/coach.  :D

Sama din sa Prrrt. . . Foul! si Yoyong Martirez. I think the woman who played their mother was Laila(?)Dizon, mother of Christopher De Leon, not Pilita.

There was also a sitcom called Kontrapelo with Dang Cecilio, Jay Ilagan and Dindo Fernando . . or has that been mentioned already?

Then there was It's A Deal starring Alma Moreno and Michael De Mesa which which beat Will & Grace by at least ten years.

Any of you guys remember the actress/model who played the family lawyer?

I think it's Gina Leviste.

Little story about It's A Deal. The sitcom was supposed to originally star Ronaldo Valdez. The role and the sitcom was supposedly tailor made for him as a way of cashing in on his sudden popularity as a gay man in those Zialcita Lamok and Daga movies (I think he also had another gay movie opposite Dindo Fernando -- one of those Mahinhin movies that Zialcita also directed). He refused though citing that the was afraid to be typecast as a gay character. The role was then given to Michael de Mesa instead. Ronaldo Valdez would appear in one of the future episodes of the sitcom though, I just can't remember if he played a closeted gay man.

Cafeteria Aroma, since page 1, for the lights of me, I cannot remember this.  Eto ba yung kasama si Leo Martinez?  I remember this Leo M. sit-com na lagi kong inaabang, kaya lang di ko matandaan yung title... tumatanda na rin ako.   ;D

Gusto ko sana isama yung Mongolian Barbecue (Mr. Surlie? and Leo Martinez as some congressman) but I think it doesn't fit the sit-com criteria.

I don't think Leo M. was in the cast.  I remember Miniong Villegas, Ben Tisoy, Rudy Manlapas and that there was a guitarist named Manok.

it's Mr. Shooli.

I even watched the movie version at the theatres.

I believe the title is: DINO, ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD NA...... I remember watching this on Regal Presents (Monday nights) before.

Michael De Mesa and Ronaldo Valdez are very convincing as gays in the movies. :D The last time I saw Michael as gay was in UNA KANG NAGING AKIN as Dawn's bestfriend.

Panalo 'to! Aside from the sofa plastic, I remember her character calling Laser Discs as Laser Dicks!

They also cleverly spoofed the home video of the Webb family practicing their golf swings. Anjo, Noel and Joji discussing something completely unrelated to golf but swinging away. Classic! Any of you guys remember the actress/model who played the family lawyer?

Even the line of Carmi Martin as the sexpot in ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD NA KABANATA was a classic............"Mabuhey!"

The one that I can't forget also when she said........"me shooting pa ako with Pekwe Gallaga mamaya gabi!"  ;D

I also remember in ABANGAN that religion was not spared in satirizing an individual or a religious figure for that matter. Jennifer Sevilla calling a fictional religious character as Pope John Paul McCartney. Just a recollection.
