Title: Pinoy Films You'd Like To See on DVD
Post by: Komikero on Nov 15, 2001 at 07:22 PM
(http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/YaBBImages/exclamation.gif)  Parts 1 & 2 of this topic (including the "Varied Titles I'd like to see on DVD" thread) merged for convenience and easier access.  Please note however that the postings are yet to be sorted in chronological order.  --kgwd.

Yep, we've closed the first thread because it's gotten to long. We can continue talking about this popular topic here.

So what do you guys think? In an ideal world, this would be a perfect time for a Best of Nida Blanca DVD Box Set. Oh well...:)

That would be a great tribute Komikero. It should include gem movies such as Korea, Galawgaw, Waray-Waray, Saan Darating Ang Umaga, Miguelito: Ang Batang Rebelde and a couple of Nida-Nestor musicals and John and Marsha comedies.

Actually, FPJ can have the most complete set of movies. I remember from an old interview or article that he actually preserves reels of his movies.

Think of it, we may be able to see the Totoy Bato in DVD sometime in the future.  ;D

I thought I read "Sibak" not "Sabik".  Just a switch of two vowels there and the title gives a whole  new movie (of the same genre) with a completely different set of target audience ;D

For a while there, I thought somebody was 'coming out' via the forum.  Just kidding, ekime. ;D

I read about it somewhere and even saw it at TLA Video rentals. I'm not sure if it was directed by Mel Chionglo but if I remember it right, it's about three brothers who all became dancers/prostitutes. At TLA, it's called Midnight Dancers.

;D I agree with Komiks, dapat me NIDA BLANCA Box Set, pero dapat yung nanalo sya ng mga awards like: MIGUELITO, MAGDUSA KA, SAAN DARATING ANG UMAGA and SANA PAG-IBIG NA. Catched Sana Pag-Ibig Na in Cinema One and she was absolutely SUPERB, GREAT and INCOMPARABLE!!!!

But sa mga new movies, I want to have a DVD copy of the only Filipino movie that made me sob habang tumatawa, BOOBA!!!! ;D ;D Si Rufa Mae Quinto lang yata ang nakagawa nun. A real talent!!

Meron barrid. Unfortunately, they only have the new ones that I despise ...  usually Judy Ann, Claudine, or bold movies by Osang ot whoever is the latest sensation like Troy Montero ... who doesn't know how to act. Those movies were either directed by former managers or PAs who knew nothing about direction ... and have scripts written by someone who was sent to the nearby sari-sari store to buy  patis. Kakabanas ang mga bagong artista. They all 'act' the same if you can call that acting ... How did they become 'stars' ? Thanks to Kuya Germs I guess... since That's Entertainment, a lot of 'walang k' have been gracing our movies and tv shows. Gone are the days when you are really talented to make it big. Ngayon, anak lang ng artista, pwede na. Oh well ...

I wanted the old movies ... with substance, better acting and stories, well directed.

There is a certain Pinoy film that I would personally like to be immortalized in DVD. I can't remember the title so I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with this one. It's a pretty old movie, and it has a superhero in it. Hindi ko tanda kung si Darna or Supergirl.  The one scene that I can't forget is this town being terrorized by a gigantic frog. One of the terrified citizens fleeing the monster is a very young (but already fat) Ike Lozada. He's barefoot, holding his slippers in his hands because he doesn't want to ruin them because they're new. He gets stepped on by the frog.

Anyone remember this film?

dude!  i saw that movie when I was a kid!  I think I saw it on channel 7 during one of those early afternoon showings.

i remember it distinctly coz it kinda freaked me out.  it had that freaky music pa like a 50's monster pic (which it probably was).  very gory.  with ike lozada bleeding and blood coming out of his mouth pa.

does anyone remember Dabiana?

Joey,

This is embarassing but what the heck. The movie you're talking about is actually  SUPERGIRL starring Pinky Montilla. She is a teen starlet of the 70's who did
action/martial arts films and all solo starrers!! Quite a feat for someone really chubby and ordinary looking.  I know that movie very well because I had watched it (hiya) several times on tv and you're right GMA 7. The special effects are really funny (if you watched it at present times) and the acting super hammish and cheesy, especially when Odette Khan creepily plays with her eyes like they're about to pop out from their sockets ha ha ha ;D

I would like to see Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara starring Dawn Zulueta.  Gave me the willies!

Singit lang...Just saw Radyo on VCD (orig) the other day and man what a big rip off!  Sound quality sa mono, the acting of Jeffrey Quizon and Booba Ruffa Mae Quinto was really the pits...Si Jeffrey Quizon dami na napatay pero si Booba di ko alam kung bakit di mahabol at mapatay...And mind you during their chase scene parating nadudulas si Epi. ???... well, understandable na si Booba mabagal tumakbo because of her kajungas...mabigat talaga pre...tapos ang hamon na kinakain ni Booba na supposed to be a leg of a victim e napakasarap tingnan parang Xmas ham...honeycured pa ata...it was more of a comedy than a suspense thriller!  Nagenjoy ako sa mga alaska ng mga katabi ko! ;D ;D ;D

If you are not a movie critic, watch this!  It will make you an instant Siskel and Ebbert or Leonard Maltin! 8)

As for the movie you watched, sorry for enduring that torture. Try not to expect too much next time. You know how predictable movies can be ... especially if the scene involves the leading character ... foreign movies or not.

Oh don't give up that fast ! Just try to be careful what you watch/rent next time. Not all are that bad .. and certainly, there are still people out there, like the Brash Young Cinema (tama ba joeypogi?),  trying to make better movies for folks with better taste in movies like you. Hope they just stop making ST movies (w/c I doubt coz this genre is the one making money for our local industry) and center more on drama which was really selling before.

Well, I remembered watching this movie before which they usually show at 3pm yung Plasticman.  I dunno who starred in this movie pero bumenta sa akin.  And don't forget Tony Falcon--->Agent X44! ;D

I don't mind them doing ST movies as long as they are done tastefully, with actors who CAN really act,  the ST scenes needed in the story and the story is really good. Somewhere in the line of Private Show and Takaw Tukso .. or Unfaithful Wife. Heck, even Lino Brocka jumped into the bandwagon (although di pa ST tawag noon) with Hot Property introducing the voluptous Carmi Martin(where is she now?) and then basketball player Dennis Roldan(sexually appealing).

As for Agent X44, I really don't like Pinoys doing imitations of Hollywood .. in this case, James Bond. Like I said before, if they are going to imitate, at least improve on the material. If they can't, they are just subjecting themselves to humiliation .. or ridicule.

I like Palos better.

"Alupihang Dagat".This one's an FPJ movie with Elizabeth Oropesa noong uso pa ang wet white t-shirts scenes sa movies which by the way pinauso ni Gloria Diaz sa "Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa".

Here's a good idea for a box set. Launching movies of the 7 bold stars na pinasikat ni Jesse Ejercito of Seven Stars Productions. It started with Elizabeth Oropesa sa Mister Mo, Lover Boy Ko, Chanda Romero, Daria Ramirez, Alma Moreno sa Ligaw na Bulaklak, Beth Bautista, at Lorna Tolentino sa Dulce Amor, Ina. I can't remember the seventh star. Was it Rio Locsin in Menor de Edad? Would someone help me complete this list?

Another box set I want to see is Maryo de los Reyes fun movies like "High School Circa '65", "Apat na Maria", and maybe "Gabun" with Michael Sandico and Lloyd Samartino.

Oops! I think I just miss my younger days in the Philippines that's why I'm kind of reminiscing about the old movies. Seriously, these are good movies that's why somehow it stays in your memories. Even the bold movies, some are directed by Ishmael Bernal. Check it out if you can find it.

The seventh star is Amy Austria. Rio Locsin was launched by Regal Films in "Disgrasyada". Although I like her better in Menor de Edad by Ishmael Bernal.

Launching movies for the Regal Babies would be another good idea for a box set of DVDs:
Rio Locsin in Disgrasyada
Cherie Gil in Problem Child
Dina Bonnevie in Katorse
Maricel Soriano, Snooky and Dina B. in Underage

Hey, I'd want that Bagets Box Set too if they ever make one.  I think the filmmakers weren't really intending on making a classic, but perhaps unintentionally, they did!

I really hope the local studios here see DVDs as a way to preserve some of their best movies. Sayang, kasi I'm pretty sure that a lot of our old classics have deteriorated beyond repair.

I think Agila starring FPJ, Christopher De Leon would by an excellent film to be released on DVD complete with different audio channels for the major dialects and English. This movie is one of the few that was shown commercially and was able to tackle sensitive issues during the Marcos years. (Sakada I think was banned or its commercial run was cut short?). The most memorable line for from that movie was: "Ano ang ipakakain sa atin ng Amerikano, hotdog?" as spoken by the macho Hukbalahap leader portrayed by Behn Cervantes.

On the lighter side, a Boxed set of Tony Falcon agent X44 movies in TCM-color.

I have been looking for classic films back in the 70s/80s ..

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang
Banawe
Insiang
Maynila Sa Kuko Ng Liwanag
Pagputi Ng Uwag, Pag-itim Ng Tagak
PX
Jaguar
Bona
Himala
City After Dark
Kisapmata
Soltero
Tatlong Taon Walang Diyos
Atsay
Gabun
Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo
Himala
Relasyon
Nunal Sa Tubig
Moral
Kakabakabaka
Miguelito
Kapit Sa Patalim
Salome
Oro Plata Mata
Saan Darating Ang Umaga

and many more that are really classic and of good quality unlike movies that were made from the 90s that are horribly written, badly directed and unforgettably acted on by ham thespians.

Viper, Agila is a good choice !!! I think that's the best FPJ movie ... and I would love to see his movie as a boxer, sort of Rocky Balboa, with Charo Santos and the very young Julie Vega.. I forgot the title of that movie.

Komikero I'm pretty sure, you're referring to Darna. :D

Hello kakabanas! Welcome to PinoyDVD! You really know your Filipino films. I wish I could say the same for myself.

Thanks Phoebus.

I also would like to see a DVD version of a concert I saw ages ago. It was called The Best of Manila with Basil Valdez, Kuh Ledesma, Zsazsa Padilla and Gary Valenciano... that was a really great concert.

And I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of flak about this, but what what the best episodes of Anna Liza or Flor de Luna on DVD ? Night time soap operas when I was growing up were cool and unlike the ones now that I just can't swallow. I guess I am not that naive anymore and I know now the difference between good and horrible. I hate movies and tv shows that make me feel stupid.

Thanks Phoebus.

There are also some movies I remember seing on tv when I was young. They were in black in white and being shown in the afternoon .... I'm sure they're gone now since there's no movie preservation in the Philippines unlike in US where they have American Film Institute that restores and preserves classic movies voted on by the artists and historians.

I would like to see on DVD these very old movies :

Korea
Anak Dalita
Badjao
Juan Tamad
Dahil Sa Isang Bulaklak
Waray-waray
Manang Biday

and some great movies made by these following great thespians :

Rosa Rosal
Marlene Dauden
Amalia Fuentes

I just remembered the Nora's great line in one of her movies .. "my brother is not a pig !"

This was in Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo

I think the following would also classify as classics :

Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa (Gloria Diaz)
Burlesk Queen
Lumakad Kang Hubad Sa Mundong Ibabaw
Scorpio Nights
The Boatman

Gay Subjects :
There's this one movie where Mark Gil played a gay character and won an award, I forgot the title but that was really good. Also,Dolphy and Nino Muhlach in Ang Tatay Kong Nanay ... that was really funny and yet near the end, it was very sad and leave a lump in your throat. Pusong Mamon have a good premise but it was badly written and directed. Too bad, the good cast were not utilized to their fullest potentials.

and some FPJ-Susan Roces comedies like
Mahal Saan Ka Nanggaling Kagabi ?

You may be referring to Kamaong Asero  ??? or Totoy Bato. I never get to see the movie Totoy Bato but followed up religiously its serialized version in Superstar komiks (Nobela ni Carlo Caparas, Guhit ni Mar Santana  :))

Viper, I think you are right. I think the title sounds like Durugin Si Totoy Bato.

Should we start an internet campaign so that FPJ Productions would release the following movies on DVD ?

Agila
Durugin Si Totoy Bato
FPJ-Susan Roces comedies like Mahal Saan Ka Nanggaling Kagabi

Well, it's just a thought. If they find out there's a market out there for these classic films, maybe they'll make them after all (wishful thinking ? :-/)

I'm rather curious how would our local film industry would restore those old films. Would they do it here or send them to other countries (US probably)? Oh man..I cannot imagine the cost of justifying quality for DVD relase for local consumption.

We may never be able see the light of day for most of those old films that are really worth restoring.

I am not that picky. They can release them on VHS tapes and I'll transfer them to a VCD or something. Sound system/effects in the Philippines are not that great anyway, especially the old ones. I don't really care as long as I get a copy of these classic films. If would be great to see them from time to time ... and make the new generation see how great Pinoy movies were. Great actors, directors, story, and can actually compete with international films in terms of the totality of the film.

If local film companies want to capture the market with our movies, I think they should at least start manufacturing DVDs that are playable in other countries.

I mean there is a considerable number of Filipinos abroad who are willing to buy local films but wouldn't be able to watch them since all of them are R3 encoded. They should at least release an R1 version of these titles or better yet, do away with region encoding and manufacture R0 discs.

Really not a bad idea. I wonder how many Millions of Filipinos there are abroad? Market and financial comparison with regards to the purchasing power compared locally would one prime consideration our local movie production company would consider.

If our local film companies sees that they could get a "bang" by shelling out huge amounts of "bucks" to press DVD of local films, it would be no problem if Region 0 or 3 with the abundance of Codefree and multi-region ("chipped") players.

RCE sucks though.

Ora Pronobis was great too... and Sakada by Behn Cervantes.

With all the actors/people in the entertainment business in the Senate and Congress, you'd think at least one of them would have thought of creating something like the American Film Institute that would restore and preserve classic Filipino movies ... ugh !!! This is so frustrating ...

And these movie studios, if they are really businessmen, they should milk their cows in every possible way like what Disney is doing. Disney has been recycling and re-releasing (theather, video or DVD ) their film library since The Little Mermaid made bug bucks back in 1988.

What is happening to the world ???? !!!!!  >:(

Back in 1998, I think it was the 100th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, there was a Film Festival of selected Filipino classics and selected Lino Brocka masterpieces @ the Lincoln Theather in NYC. And this was with the cooperation of Cultural Center of the Philippines. Can someone in Manila find out from CCP if they are selling copies of classic films in VHS/DVD ? I am really desperate and I have no idea how to get in touch with CCP.  ???

yeah.. but the actors/movie people who got in the bandwagon were not interested in improving the arts - even when they were in the business they were not there at least to save or improve the industry. they're there for only themselves. di tumatanaw ng utang na loob.. look at gomez, he's wanting to represent MAD in the partylist system rather than the actors' guild or some other movie-business-related org so they can lobby for legislations favoring the industry....

I know what you're saying. Gone are the days when actors are devoted to their craft. Today, people who are KSP are hogging the limelight and doesn't even bother to improve their "acting abilities". The Philippine entertainment industry is going down the drain ... or maybe it did already.  :'(

Well, if you are looking for magnificent sound or picture quality, sure you wouldn't find them in our local films. I just love the films that I saw when I was growing up in the 70s. I simply think those were the best years in Philippine cinema. Besides, most of us only wanted the classic ones ... not just some cheesy, corny, stupid movies with forgettable titles, storylines and actors.

I do respect your opinion though. I wouldn't buy anything that was made after 1986 ... except for a couple of really good ones like Bayani or Sakay.

Here's an interesting list of important Pinoy films from Noel Vera.

http://wlt4.home.mindspring.com/fafr/articles/filipino.htm

I liked your choices Noel and enjoyed your observations a lot. Your top eight choices could be switched into any of the top eight positions and it would still be a great list (post-60s).

And yes, finally, someone who's with me about Kisapmata. It is truly a GREAT film, with it's simple story and yet the scenes speaks a lot about the characters and story. The ending alone was worth my time (although totally unexpected for a Filipino film). Thank you !!!

I am just wondering though why the following films didn't make the cut ? I think they are a lot better than the rest of the films in your list (although they didn't start any trend or something like that ):

Ganito Kami Noon, Paano ....
Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo
Kapit sa Patalim
Himala
Itanong Mo Sa Buwan
Aliw
Bona
Batch '81

I would love to know what your thoughts were about these films ... if you have the time...  thanks.  :)

By the way, you seem to be a big Mario O'Hara fan. I think that's great and the guy deserves the recognition that was once afforded only to Brocka, Gerry de Leon, Mike de Leon, Bernal, and their contemporaries.  I love his Nora Aunor movies (Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Condemned and Bulaklak ng City Jail).

Hi, saw kakabanas post by sheer accident.  You could have posted me anytime, I'd be glad to answer.

"Ganito Kami Noon, Paano ....

This was a bitter disappointment.  I've heard so much about this film and when I saw it, I was shock to see how uncinematic it was--it looked like a telecine.  Eddie Romero, as you can also see in Aguila, doesn't really have a filmmaker's eye.  He's more a literate person, the script of the film easily being the best element there.  It is one of the rare attempts by Filipino filmmakers to do winsome light comedy, and it has wonderful performances by Boyet as Kulas, Gloria Diaz as a deceptive seductress (tho you see similarities to between her and the Faye Dunaway character in Little Big Man), and a great comic turn from Leopoldo Salcedo--never thought he had it in him, he's so serious in his other roles.  It's smart and sophisticated up to a point, but it's not really a film.

Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo

Was another disappointment. Lupita Kashiwahara (don't know if spelling's right) doesn't put much subtlety into her films (Babae was strident, but had a great performance from Nora Aunor), and doesn't put much subtlety into this one.  It's a cry of anger and pain, but clumsily done.  The scene where she greets her brother's body, seen today, was unintentionally funny to me, I'm sad to say.

Kapit sa Patalim

Or Bayan Ko.  This is late Lino Brocka, and you only have to see the films from his great period in the '70s to see the difference.  In films like Insiang, Tinimbang, and Maynila, he worked on so many levels--personal, social, theatrical; in his late films, he was mainly political.  I could even tell you the turning point--when he took Jaguar to Cannes, and this film Yol, by Yilmaz Guney, got all the attention because the director was in jail.  That was when he noted how political films travelled better internationally, and this film and Orapronobis are the result.

Mind you, I still do like them--they're superb agitprop, vivid and brilliant posters for the opposition.  But they can't compare to his truly great works.

Himala

Came so very close--it's Bernal's most hallucinatory and surreal work, and prophetic, in that it evokes the lands around Pinatubo and the despair and religious fanaticism of the people living there.  It just got edged out of the list.

Itanong Mo Sa Buwan

Didn't like it.  Something about the complex plot, which was inventive and clever, didn't gell for me.  Also the dialogue felt fake, which is surprising, considering Amando Lao's work for Jeffrey Jeturian and in Takaw Tukso is superb.

Aliw

This I like very much, but again got edged out.  It is much better than his Working Girls.  I also regret not including Relasyon, or Salawahan.

Bona

ditto.

Batch '81

I did like it, but someone familiar with frats told me where it fails to get the details right and that spoiled it for me somewhat.  I still think it's a wonderful sustained piece of filmmaking, and full of energy (unlike his Sister STella L, which I felt lacked conviction).

And yes, I'm a fan of Mario O'Hara...which I think I can defend in so many words (a LOT of words).

THANKS NOEL. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR REACTION TO THE FILMS I MENTIONED. I WAS NOT STARTING A DEBATE, JUST CURIOUS WHY THEY DIDN'T MAKE YOUR CUT.

YOU DON'T NEED TO DEFEND MARIO O'HARA. I THINK HE'S A VERY GOOD DIRECTOR AND DESERVES MORE APPRECIATION.

If no one objects, my Singapore Film Festival article on Mario O'Hara:

The Quiet Man

Noel Vera

Ask any critic of Asian cinema to name the great Filipino filmmakers and they will in all probability mention Lino Brocka ("Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag" [Manila in the Claws of Neon], "Insiang"), perhaps Ishmael Bernal ("Himala" [Miracle], "Manila By Night").  If said critic has more than a casual knowledge of Philippine cinema he or she might add Mike De Leon ("Kisapmata" [Blink of an Eye]), Celso Ad. Castillo ("Burlesk Queen," "Pagputi ng Uwak, Pagitim ng Tagak" [When the Crow Turns White, When the Heron Turns Black]), Eddie Romero ("Ganito Kami Ngayon; Paano Kayo Noon?" [We Were Like This Then; What Are You Like Now?]) or Lupita Concio, ("Minsa'y Isang Gamu-Gamo" [Sometimes There Is A Moth]).

Rarely, if ever, does the name Mario O'Hara come up; mention his name to any Asian film critic--even, until recently, to any Filipino film critic--and all you will get is a blank stare and profound silence.  This is understandable--O'Hara tends to stay in the background and rarely (actually, never) bothers to promote himself as a filmmaker, much less a filmmaker that deserves international stature.  Yet he was as much a force in the seventies and eighties as any of these names, and in a more varied range of guises--not just as filmmaker but as actor and writer as well.  He wrote the screenplay for two of Brocka's best works--"Insiang" (1976), about a girl (Hilda Koronel) raped by her mother's lover (Ruel Vernal), and "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang" [You Were Weighed and Found Wanting, 1974], about a boy named Junior (Christopher de Leon) growing up in a small provincial town.  O'Hara, incidentally, gives a great performance in "Tinimbang" as Berto, the town leper and Junior's adoptive father.

O'Hara's first three film projects showed a daring and ambitious artist in development.  "Mortal" (1975), about a man who went insane and killed his wife, was a dark and experimental work (O'Hara begins the story inside the man's psychotic fantasies, from which gradually emerges the story of what really happened).  It was a failure at the box-office and was one of the reasons Brocka's film production company, Cinemanila, folded.

For his second project O'Hara was given a big-budgeted historical epic starring popular actress Nora Aunor, as a young provincial girl struggling to survive during the Japanese Occupation.  "Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos" [Three Years Without God, 1976] represented a quantum leap in scope and filmmaking skill for O'Hara, and is regarded by many as his finest film.

For his third project O'Hara wrote and directed most of "Mga Bilanggong Birhen" [The Captive Virgins, 1977], but left before shooting ended; the picture was finished without him.  The film, about women at the turn of the century surviving oppression in a patriarchal family, achieves moments of intense feeling and lyricism despite its unpolished state.

There is a subgenre where Filipino filmmakers try to create their version of Manila as a lower circle of Hell; examples range from Brocka's classic "Maynila sa Kuko Ng Liwanag" to Ishmael Bernal's "Manila By Night."  From 1984 to 1986, O'Hara directed not one but three films set in Manila.  "Condemned" (1984) is a noir thriller about a brother and sister on the run and the gang-lord matriarch that wants them both dead; "Bulaklak sa City Jail" [Flowers of the City Jail, 1985] is about a pregnant woman in prison.  "Bagong Hari" [The Neoteric King, 1986] is an intensely nihilistic action film about a professional killer who takes revenge on the people who have wronged him.  Taken together, O'Hara's "Manila Trilogy" represents a range of genres (from noir to drama to action) and social milieu (from street hustlers to women convicts to an almost alternate-reality vision of Manila) that few Filipino filmmakers have even approached in terms of sweep and intensity.

In 1998, after years of relative inactivity, O'Hara wrote and directed a pair of films: "Babae Sa Bubungang Lata" [Woman on a Tin Roof] is O'Hara's elegy to the Filipino film industry, a heartfelt celebration of what it once was and a scathing critique of what it is now.  Shot in ten days and made for a mere 2.5 million pesos ($60,000), the film's technical crudity actually becomes part of its style--as if the poor, desperate people the film is about had gone behind the camera and made the film themselves.  His "Sisa" is perhaps the most radical reinterpretation of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal yet made, with Rizal involved in a passionate love affair with Sisa, his most famous literary creation.  O'Hara's latest film, "Pangarap ng Puso" [Hope of the Heart, 2000], is a boy-meets-girl love story set in the violent political turmoil of the Negros provinces.  In its mix of mythological folklore and actual military atrocities, it evokes the fantastical yet at the same time grimly realistic fiction of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Some qualities of O'Hara worth mentioning--he is one of the few Filipino filmmakers still active today who is not exclusively film-literate, or even film-oriented.  He readily admits to having never seen a film by Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Sergei Eisenstein, D. W. Griffith, or Buster Keaton.  Unlike Brocka or Bernal or practically any significant Filipino filmmaker you can mention, he never went to a major university like the University of the Philippines or the Ateneo de Manila, but instead studied chemical engineering in the less prestigious Adamson University (from which he never graduated).  He actually started his career in radio, having landed a role in a Proctor and Gamble radio show in 1963.  He met Brocka in 1968, joining his television series "Balintataw," then acted for him in "Tubog sa Ginto" [Dipped in Gold].  Brocka also talked him into going into theater, and he joined the prestigious Philippine Experimental Theater Association (PETA), starring in the original theater production of "Bubungang Lata."  He still occasionally works in theater, having played Mephistopheles in a 1995 Filipino translation of Goethe's "Faust," and Mack the Knife in a production of "The Threepenny Opera" [Operang Tatlong Pera, 1999].  He won first prize from the 1998 Philippine Centennial Commission for his first-ever published play, a "zarzuela" (an indigenous form of musical drama) titled "Palasyo ni Valentin" (The Palace of Valentin).  It's a gothic love story between an actress and a piano player working in a "zarzuela" theater, and it covers a period stretching from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of World War 2.

He has worked effectively with both large budgets ("Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos") and small ("Babae sa Bubungang Lata"), but it is with the smaller budgets that he works his miracles.  He notes that while his films don't often make much money, they don't lose money either, because their production costs are so small.

The results are far from perfect--"Sisa" and "Pangarap ng Puso" (both made for around $60 to $70,000) suffer from less-than-perfect camerawork (out-of-focus shots, dim lighting) and an embarrassing lack of production design (papier-mâché prison cells, Styrofoam skulls, a helicopter sequence without the helicopter)--but O'Hara compensates with sheer moviemaking technique.  Because he is from theater, he is unafraid of on-camera or "theatrical" tricks; he may use them even if they look bad, because he is often able to "finesse" the result with judicious cutting--and in fact, editing is a consistent strength in O'Hara's films.

(to be continued)

(cont'd)

O'Hara admits that editing is often an act of "salamangka" (black magic) for him.  He's able to trick the audience into thinking a poor effect works, or a bad shot is less than awful (because it doesn't last long), or a poor performance is actually good (because all the overacting has been trimmed).  At the same time, this rapid-fire editing style often gives his films a nervous, unsettled quality--as if they were the work of a restless storyteller, trying to pull a tale together from various disparate elements.

O'Hara has said he edits his films like radio shows…and you can see this from the deft use of transitional voiceovers, bridging musical cues, sound effects; you also see this from the swift way his scenes begin, develop, end (in radio, silence [not pauses in dialogue, there is a difference] is called "dead air"--not a good thing).  When asked what he thought of Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" (Welles, it must be remembered, also worked in radio and theater before coming to film), O'Hara had only one comment: "It's so radio!"

O'Hara spends part of his time writing for television, radio, theater, and film; he spends part of his time earning bread and butter in either radio or television (for one year he directed "Flordeluna," a well-known Filipino TV soap opera).  Rarely, he acts; even more rarely, he directs a film (he shot "Babae sa Bubungang Lata" and "Sisa" back-to-back in a gruelingly sleepless period of thirty days).  The rest of his time he spends walking (he has been known to wander the streets from Binondo to Luneta Park for a distance of several kilometers) and talking to people.  He claims that most of his stories and characters are inspired by people he encounters while walking the streets; in fact, the conceit of his "Sisa" is that Jose Rizal could not have created so vivid a character without knowing (or falling in love with, or making love to) her in real life.  He claims that the story of "Insiang" was inspired by what happened to his back-yard neighbors in Pasay City, and that the one false note in Brocka's otherwise excellent film was in setting it in Tondo, Manila.  Hilda's beauty would have been instantly recognizable in Tondo, while in Pasay, which is full of red-light districts, she would have been taken to be just another prostitute (Brocka made the switch because he wanted the visual drama of Tondo's slums).

O'Hara has been linked to Lino Brocka, particularly in the early years when they worked in collaboration; it's wrong, however, to call him Brocka's imitator.  While he's every bit as capable of the social realism that is Brocka's specialty ("Babae sa Bubungang Lata"), he is also adept in other genres--historical epic ("Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos"); horror ("Halimaw sa Banga" [Monster in a Jar, 1985]); and gothic drama ("The Fatima Buen Story," 1994).  He is also Brocka's superior when it comes to making noir ("Condemned'), and action pictures ("Bagong Hari")--there is a fluidity. coherence, and visual imaginativeness to his action sequences that Brocka never quite managed to achieved.

A final difference: Brocka tended to paint the world in Manichean terms of "us vs. them," "good vs. evil."  This was true in "Maynila Sa Kuko Ng Liwanag," where the hero's innocence ultimately remained unsullen, and only intensified in his later films--in "Bayan Ko" (My Country), and "Orapronobis" (Fight For Us), the central figures were mere walking allegories, making ideological points for the audience.  It was, however, not true of O'Hara's scripts for Brocka; they retain a many-sided complexity Brocka lost as his cinema grew increasingly political.

In "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang," the leper played by O'Hara is first seen as a rapist, while the film's villainous patriarch (Eddie Garcia) is given his moments of nostalgia and regret.  In "Insiang"--possibly Brocka's finest work--the line between good and evil disappears completely; by film's end, you can look at each of the three main characters--Insiang (Hilda Koronel), her mother (Mona Lisa), and her mother's lover (Ruel Vernal)--and honestly say you don't know who was wronged, or who the wrongdoer; who was the victim and who the rapist.

It was ever so in O'Hara's work; he never follows trends, never goes for what is politically or culturally fashionable, never makes films for the international film festival circuit.  "Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos" was attacked when it came out for its sympathetic portrayal of the wartime Japanese.  "Fatima Buen" was controversial for its unlikable, almost irredeemable heroine.  "Bagong Hari" was rated "X" by the Board of Censors not just because of its violence, but also because everyone in it was morally repulsive--even the hero, a modest and caring young man, is an accomplished killer with a long list of victims.  "Pangarap ng Puso" failed in the boxoffice presumably because it was dark and uncategorizable--the shy, sensitive boy (Alex Alano) becomes a feared terrorist (who somehow retains something of the boy deep inside him) while the equally shy girl (Matet de Leon) finds herself picking up a gun by film's end and using it.  If, as Renoir once famously put it, "everyone has his reasons," O'Hara's films demonstrate Renoir's proposition in intensely dramatic, unmistakably Filipino terms.

A final word: Jolicco Cuadra, an elderly maverick of an art critic and a formidable (some say impenetrable) prose stylist, considers O'Hara the finest Filipino filmmaker he knows--this having seen the films and met the likes of Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Eddie Romero, even Gerardo De Leon (not to mention--or so he claims--Orson Welles and Vittorio de Sica, way back when he was a young scholar in France…but that's another story…).  One of Cuadra's favorite films of O'Hara is "Bagong Hari," and of the lead star of "Hari," Dan Alvaro, he had this to say: "(Dan) was perfect.  So quiet!  Real killers are like that.  The loud man walking down the street, threatening death, I don't notice.  I'm afraid of the quiet man."  That's an observation he might just as easily have made of the film's maker as well.

are you a golfer?

as to getting back on topic here...
although some filipino titles has surfaced on dvd,
i heard that the video and audio is not dvd quaility!
so i think i would hold off on buying a filipino dvd
until they can show me one that has a dolby 5.1 mix and a Widescreen anamorphic format.

I am not a golfer but I do gulp a lot (corny no? LOL). But hey, I'll be spending the second weekend of August in Myrtle Beach to visit some friends.

Getting back to the topic, are you nuts ??? Have you seen any NEW Filipino movie in a theater ? The picture quality and sound can be compared to the ones made back in the 70s. How do you expect that to translate to dvd quality ? You are expecting too much and heading for a very huge disappointment. Philippine cinema is NEVER going to progress as long as there are producers running the industry who are content in making quickie movies with low budgets, tired subject matter, second class equipments.  They only care if the movie is commercially viable and have good actors.

But are technical achievements the only things that matter? I've seen a battered copy of _Jaguar_, and I see it as far superior to any of the Hollywood movies released on DVD today. In fact I've reached that stage where I've seen too many U.S. movies with special effects that I'm now more keen on plot, character development, and acting, with cinematography, editing, and music as secondary aspects.

Hey, I'm with you danzig. If you read my previous posts on this thread, I mentioned that I wasn't asking for too much, even a VHS copy would do. I was just saying if people want a Filipino movie on dvd and expect dvd quality picture and sound, they better look the other way coz it ain't gonna happen baby. Not in this lifetime !

And if I remember it right, Jaguar was a really good film by Lino Brocka. Was that the one with Philip Salvador as a security guard ? This was in the 70s ... before he did Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo and Bona ...

Jaguar was 1979, same year (and yes, probably before) Ina Ka ng Anak Mo and Bona (1980).

Jaguar has a terrible video copy, but the film on the big screen--with cinematography by the great Conrado Baltazar--is memorably noir, particularly the final chase through Smoky Mountain, which with its smoking fires and darkly terrifying shapes could very nicely substitute for one of the lower circles of Hell (all you need are pitchforks).

That said, just getting these films on DVD and video would be an enormous help--it would disseminate them to people and remind us underconfident people that we did--and still do, in rare cases--great films, that went to Cannes (I'd like to see Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich go Cannes).  I'd take Jaguar, which has more honesty and urgency and realism, over Spielberg's sugarcoated Schindler's List, or romanticized Privete Ryan.

And three films out on VHS, bad transfer, I consider brilliant--Babae sa Bubungang Lata, Sisa, and Pangarap ng Puso.  All made for $50,000, which wouldn't cover Julia Roberts' hairdo expense.  But I'd rather watch these films than her entire ouevre (sp?), Erin Brockvich included.

I think comparing honesty, urgency and realism between foreign and local films was not fair. We know where Smoky Mountains are and know people who have lived such life, meaning we know how it is and was in the Philippines. When watching Filipino films, we can relate since it's our culture and environment. None of us were ever in a war, experienced what a Jew went through, or complained about contaminated water that we drink everyday. Sure they were romanticized, but does that necessarily mean they were not honest or close to reality ? Even Lino Brocka romanticized some of his films (like using Ligaya Paraiso I think as a name for one of her characters)...

But we all look at things differently. I am not trying to start a debate, just writing what my tiny brain was thinking... ::)

And just an FYI, SPR's plot, saving one soldier in the middle of the war, does not sit with me well either. ;)

Actually, it's not that simple--I've seen a few docs and feature films on the Holocaust and World War 2, while I've never seen Smoky Mountain except from a distance (could smell it, though).

And I really, really don't make a difference between Filipino films and foreign films--treat them both the same way.  The results can be surprising.

Yeah, a little debate is healthy for the mind, but too much can leave a sour taste on the tongue :)

The print and negative of Wanted: Perfect Mother, Lino Brocka's first ever film, is gone forever.

Cherry Blossoms is going fast.

Tubog sa Guinto is gone.

Same with Burlesk Queen.

I think we are going to have a very limited DVD collection.

Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos has only one print left.

Bagong Hari has disappeared, and the producer is dead.

Gerry De Leon's Dyesebel, 48 Oras, the crucial reel of Moises Padilla Story, El Filibusterismo...all gone.

Great taste--IF I had actually seen the films.  Of the ones mentioned, I've seen El Filibusterismo (One of the greatest Filipino films ever made) and Moises Padilla (a great, riveting performance from Joseph Estrada, no less!).  The rest I might never see.

We are losing our heritage, folks.  We are losing our collective memory, these films, and any memory at all of our past greatness--and we were great.  Brocka went to Cannes and Berlin.  O'Hara's film, if it ever survives, may be similarly appreciated.  James Agee loved Manuel Conde's Ganghis Khan; David Lean appreciated Gerry De Leon and even today, there are French film critics who place De Leon in the same league with Fritz Lang.

All that gone, if no one does anything about this.

That is truly sad, Noel. Something has really got to be done to preserve our films. As a simple consumer, I really don't see what I can do about it, except to patronize them if they're available. If these films become available at some point in DVD, heck even in VCD, I'd be the first to buy them all up....

It's a shame about those films whose prints are long gone. But who knows? Some of them may pull a "Passion of Joan of Arc", a film long known to be lost to fire until a complete copy in perfect condition was discovered in the closet of a Norweigan mental institution in 1981...

Hmmm ... maybe we should check out the one in Mandaluyong. Who know what we'll find in there ? LOL. <Sorry Komikero, just couldn't resist>

But seriously, in my ealier post, I would even buy a VHS copy of these films and transfer them myself. I think some TV stations have copies of them but I don't think they can reproduce them coz of copyright laws. Doesn't University of the Philippines have some sort of film archives?

The best archive is ABS-CBN, 24 hours aircon.

But the best collection is in CCP.  ONly aircon in daytime, not good enough.

VHS recordings aren't as clear.  Neither is DVD. The best is a film print, also the most lasting.

They are proposing an archive.  Some say Mt. Makiling; others say Tagaytay.  No real money, nothing concrete put up yet.

It's not sad.  It's infuriating.  I've been trying to get Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos restored for years.

The CCP collection is occasionally shown in Pelikula at Lipunan, which is held by Mowelfund every February.

Or you can see them and more on Cinema One.  That's the one thing Skycable and Home have over the rest.

1. Bagets
2. Bagets 2
3. Hotshots
You could just imagine these movies with extras such as behind the scenes and interviews (past or current). Viva can dig up their old files for interviews that might have occurred during the 80's or locate these stars today and interview them regarding the movie.

4. A Dangerous Life
Kakatawa nga e sa laserdisc at sa VHS lang nilabas ito at hindi pa ibinenta dito sa Pinas. The Philippines played a major role in this film tapos walang ibinenta dito. It's high time na magkaroon na ng DVD nun dito (siyempre mas maganda kung me extras). It's a CLASSIC !!!  8)

It seems some of our voices in the forum has been heard,
just saw this article on www.inq7.net by Nestor Torre

Filling the need for tapes of outstanding Filipino films

THESE past weeks, we’ve been getting more than the usual number of queries from film buffs both here and abroad about where they can buy videotape copies of outstanding Filipino movies by the likes of Brocka, Bernal, De Leon, Romero, etc.

Our standard reply is that we head for the video shops at Virra Mall for our own “quality” “films on tape” needs, but some people say that they haven’t found much there. Any other sources?

Last week, we were with a number of film people and we asked for tips in this regard. Alas, all that most of them could come up with was our own Virra Mall advisory.

Maybe the trick is to give the Virra Mall shops a longer and more detailed look. When we’re looking for tapes of good movies, we go through hundreds of them to find maybe four or five really good ones.

What about, yes, dear reader? Do you have of a source of good Filipino films on tape that most people don’t know about? Tell us, and we’ll pass the information on to the growing number of people who’ve been asking us.

By the way, the growing interest in good Filipino movies should get a film-savvy entrepreneur to think about going into this new kind of service. There appears to be quite a demand out there for tapes of Filipino film classics, so somebody could turn a tidy profit servicing that need.

Royalties will have to be paid to producers, of course, but there should be enough left over from entrepreneurs’ while. Any takers?

“Why,” asked a member of the audience at a recent film forum,” do bad movies make money?” Good question!

First, quite a number of people go to the movies to relax, to escape. They don’t want to think, to be bothered, to face up to reality. They just want two hours of fun, and this is what some bad movies give them.

Second, some bad movies are very well promoted. Their publicity is so good an pervasive that people feel practically compelled to view them, just to see what all the fuss is about – and to be among the first to talk about the movies at home, in school or at the office. That’s a status symbol in these parts, as you know.

Third, the bad movie topbills the viewer’s favorite star. Some local moviegoers are very loyal to their idols, and are prepared to patronize star’s movies more than once, just to boost its showing at the box office. How loyal can you get?!

Fourth, the bad film is a sequel, and some people watch sequel’s because they have “brand name appeal,” and you know how we go for name brands. If the sequel turns out to be lousy, well, worse things have happened, it’s only a movie, life goes on, no sweat, etc.

Fifth, some viewers dote on specific film types and are prepared to see just about any movie that conforms to their preferred genre. Thus, action film buffs will sit through the nth rehash of a tired, old revenge or “global domination” plot, as long as it has the regulation number of fight or chase scenes, plus special effects galore.

Sixth, a number of viewers may not even know – or care – that the movie they’re watching is bad. This is the dream combination of low expectations and even lower production values that keep quickie move producers happy, even as they sneer at viewers’ terrible taste.

Unluckily for them, however, some moviegoers have become less abysmally slap-happy to please. Plus, movie ticket prices have gone up so much comes to the movies they choose to see.

Bad movies will continue to be made, but these will be fewer people who will patronize them, so fewer lousy flicks will be churned out. That’s one happy prospect to look forward to, at least!

Actually, I was one of those who sent an e-mail to the guy. I asked a friend in Manila to look for those classic films and he can't come up with anything. He's got a friend at ABS-CBN, but they won't let him copy any.  Then I stumbled upon Nestor's column, and he was discussing some classic films from the 70's ... so I thought I'd ask him and I can give my friend specific direction where to look.

I may sound as KJ, but in my opinion, THERE'S VERY LITTLE HOPE OF GETTING FILIPINO CLASSIC FILMS on home video.

All the video formats have passed, betamax, vhs, laserdisc, VCD and now DVD. Any restoration on video format? NONE.

I believe there are still films that are being kept by people who are waiting for the right time (read: profit)
to make them public. Who knows? They might even be the producers, directors or their families and friends who have these films.

for movies, aside from the ones mentioned:

Kamakalawa - Tetchi Agbayani
Darna Kunô - Dolphy
(circa 90s)
Eskapo - good cinematography, refreshing audio, good production/costume design
Pare Ko - juvenile Bagets-type but viewers can relate
Ligaya* (Director's Cut ;D)- Rosanna Roses (I even liked the way she sings the title-theme :) )
Selya* (again, Director's Cut ;D ) -Rosanna Roses

*some other Carlitos Segion-Reyna films are good too

This movie is supergirl, it stars pinky de leon.

wcvmorasa & Komikero,

I too remeber this movie.  Actually, a trivia about this local 'Supergirl' movie came up in another internet group I'm in.  I also thought it was Pinky de Leon who played the part until our 'trivia master' corrected me with this reply read on :D):

Just thought I'd share this info for whatever its worth ;)

bartmaniac,

thanks for the correction and sorry for the mistake. I forgot about who the other pinky in the moviedom at that time, (says a lot about my age huh? hehehe)

anyway, I just hope that some of the movie execs are logging in here, so that they know that there is a market for old movies in particular. its saddening to know that  some of my wish lists for tagalog dvds are just dreams as most of them are already gone or worse rotting away at this very moment.

Anyhoo, I know there are a  lot of other problems in our country right now, and preserving movies may not be one of the priorities. But maybe some years from now our children are going to look back and say the same thing about the better movies that have been made during our time.

Same with his El Filibusterismo.  It's on video, and shown on Viva Channel occasionally.

I think Rio Locsin's launching movie was "Disgrasyada" but I'm not sure if it was with Seven Stars.

The seventh star is Amy Austria in "Nang Bumuka ang Sampaguita". Chanda Romero in "Sa Kagubatan ng Lungsod,"  Daria Ramirez in "Lord, Give Me a Lover," and Beth Bautista in "Huwag (Bayaw)." That should complete the list.

Rio Locsin was launched by Regal Films in "Disgrasyada."

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang
Banawe
Insiang
Maynila Sa Kuko Ng Liwanag
Pagputi Ng Uwag, Pag-itim Ng Tagak
PX
Jaguar
Bona
Himala
City After Dark
Kisapmata
Soltero
Tatlong Taon Walang Diyos
Atsay
Gabun
Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo
Himala
Relasyon
Nunal Sa Tubig
Moral
Kakabakabaka
Miguelito
Kapit Sa Patalim
Salome
Oro Plata Mata
Saan Darating Ang Umaga

and many more that are really classic and of good quality unlike movies that were made from the 90s that are horribly written, badly directed and unforgettably acted on by ham thespians.

I have some  Pinoy movies on vhs na  original copies at halos meron ako ng mga hinahanap mo if you want to trade let me know.  Iam looking for Susan Roces " Patayin Mo Sa Sindak si Barbara".

-Ninja Kids
-Panday Trilogy + edit of the cartoon TV series just for kicks!
-Starzan Trilogy (alam ko nakatatlo ito eh) Rene Requiestas, Joey De Leon, and Ungga Ayala trio rocks - Cheetaeh... ganda lalake!
-Darna: Ate Vi and Nanette Medved version.

and medyo off-track: STrAngeBrew (that NU flick) just can't get enough of TADO and Angel Rivero (minsan talaga nananalangin ako mag-bathing suit ito pag nagpupunta sila ni Tado sa beach or pool - pero T-shirt and pants lang!)

Dapat ata mag-hire ng mga PinoyDVDers ang Regal, Viva, and Star Movies eh...  to ensure DVD quality! Mukhang binabato lang sa "Just Edit" ang mga materials eh.

I remember  Mr. Wong , i think  i have a video of Chiquito as Mr. Wong,  may part  pa nga sa movie na ito na- nag Darna si Chiquito ( para syang butete ;D) at  Mr . Wong naman si Vilma.   So bale nauna si Chiquito as male Darna kesa  kay Dolphy.

what i'd like to see in dvd are the old lo waist gang movies.  one of my favorite old timer comedians is pablo virtoso.  and the scenes he has with dencio padilla are always hilarious.

also 50's movies like this fellow with a third eye on his forehead.  and the tarzan ripoff.  also dolphy as tanzan.

what about sitak ni jack with jay ilagan, that show was also funny

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang - The film where Christopher De Leon debuted and won best actor, if I'm not mistaken. I remember seeing it sa UP Film Center (we were required to write a reaction paper about it). I don't entirely remember the story (hence would like to see it on video)  but remember enjoying it immensely! Meron kayang kahit VHS nito?

That's easy.

All the classic films by Avellana, Bernal, Brocka, De Leon, Gallaga, etc. (Batch 81, Igorota, Jaguar, Insiang, etc.) all given a special edition treatment, complete with commentary, interviews, deleted scenes (if any), documentaries, etc.

A lot of other countries do this to their classic films. Why can't we?

Oro Plata Mata, complete with making of special features.

Cinema One aired before "Memories from the set of ORO PLATA MATA" but very short feature. Still worth watching as Peque Gallaga discussed how Negros people really helped in making the movie, plus the 3 main cast.....Cherie Gil, Joel Torre and Sandy Andolong. Production designer Don Escudero was also interviewed.

Rumors are circulating again that Star Cinema will release it next year along with the other ECP titles on their archive......HIMALA, SOLTERO & MISTERYO SA TUWA.

Box-set probably.  ;)

Crossing my fingers already. Anyway, two short questions, I always see the Himala print with the burnt-in Japanese and English subtitles. Are there any other prints of this movie that could be used for the DVD release? And two, is Kakabakabakaba? an ECP film?

By the way, since Joey Gosiengfiao passed away, how about a special commemorative release or something? I'm dying to see Temptation Island.

if im not mistaken, lvn ang nag-release ng kakaba-kaba ka ba. regal released a vcd version of temptation island a few years ago. i was able to buy a copy. there was even a misprint in the names of cast. they included al tantay's name even though he wasn't in the film.

sana nga i-release nila ito sa dvd with special features like interviews with the cast and crew. that would be fun. :)

Hey ciconeguy, im praying also, hehe. I wish they would tuck in the docu on ORO titled- Memories on the Set: with Joel Torre, Cherie Gil, Sandy Andolong, Peque and Don Escudero giving some insights from the film.

Nixenzo, that print is the most pristine copy of HIMALA that was also shown in Berlin Film Fest during the 80's.

Oh, it's an LVN movie. Hehe. Sorry. Wasn't even born in that era. Personally, I would like to see that interview when Dina said "Hindi ko alam kung anong ka-gagahan ang ginawa namin..." or something.  ;D So funny.

Nixenzo, that print is the most pristine copy of HIMALA that was also shown in Berlin Film Fest during the 80's.
Really? I guess it wouldn't be so bad, besides, I heard that ABS-CBN is cleaning the print. I hope if that is true, it would be used for any future releases.

Ditto.  ;D ;D ;D Is this the one?

Lots of movies from my childhood like the John en Marsha movie, Dear Diary, Huwag Mong Buhayin ang Bangkay, Halimaw sa Banga, Pepe en Pilar (Maricel Soriano, Gabby Concepcion), 14 Going Steady (Janice de Belen), Tender Age (Nadia Montenegro), Tora Tora Tora Bang Bang Bang.

But then I also wish they'd release Itim and other Mike de Leon films on DVD. :(

Batch '81 (which I already own) and Bayaning Third World are both available on DVD.

John En Marsha - the TV series - is actually available on DVD. I believe it's the first CLASSIC Pinoy TV series made available on DVD.

I still haven't found Oro, Plata, Mata on DVD but I hear it's been released. I'm thinking of blind-buying it. How's the transfer to those of you who bought it?

I am currently in the process of digitally remastering my films BAYANI (1992) and SAKAY (1993). This is a a step towards awareness in the preservation and restoration of films that otherwise may be lost in deterioration through time. As far as I know, no Filipino film has been truly digitally remastered (not of course including recent digital films that have been blown-up onto 35mm film) as most old films are transferred onto video from aged positive prints. A special edition release of BAYANI is underway and is being digitally remastered via the facilities of IGNITE Media Inc. SAKAY on the other hand is being undertaken by UNICO Pictures/Unitel and has a targeted release in late 2008. I am also making efforts in getting my 1997 tv feature KAMADA with GMA7 rereleased on DVD by also digitally remastering it from the original 16mm negatives. Along with this, I am making efforts into compiling my old short films (super-8mm, 16mm) into a dvd package as well, and may include the 2000 Cannes Palme D'Or winner ANINO (35mm).
Do visit my website http://www.raymondred.com for info on my current projects, including a new feature film now in pre-production.

Meron na bang nag-suggest ng Panday (FPJ)? This is a classic sci-fi film. They can also make a video game concept of this film.

Possibly way back and in other threads related to the topic. Who wouldn't want the complete PANDAY on DVD? Tapos, in box-set packaging and not just 2-in-1 movies. :)

Lots of movies from the 80's and 90's. :D

My friends would love to see movies like Family Tree, Pik Pak Boom and Inday Bote on DVD.

My pick would be the restored version of Kasal? The directorial debut of Laurice Guillen. Gorgeous photography retains the memory of the old Manila from the past. This will serve as a document for the curious generations to come. And of course that intelligently interwoven love stories, well acted and still relevant commentary on the values of marriage.

What is/are yours?

MABUHAY!
