Title: Recently Discovered TV Shows You Might Not Have Heard About Yet
Post by: voj on Mar 26, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Rebooting.  The other thread (Most recently viewed TV Shows/Torrents) is fast becoming a TV viewing diary for some members. :)  My fault really for not being explicit enough.

When  i started that thread, it was to point members to interesting shows NOT AVAILABLE locally. Although the title is quite generic, I thought my posts were self explanatory, besides, there are threads for the more popular shows.

Everybody who's into downloading knows that the latest season of most of the popular shows are just starting and you can post to your heart's content to the various threads dedicatied to these shows.

So ground rules:

1. This is NOT your TV viewing diary.

ex.  If you pointed out that The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency as different from the other detective shows as the setting is in Botswana and the characters are supposed to be Africans, that's good.  You do NOT have to post each and every episode you watched.  Unless, of course, one episode has particular interesting point you may want to put accross.

2. This is not for TV shows with existing threads.

Most popular TV shows have their own threads already, go nuts.

3. This is NOT your TV viewing diary.

I just can't emphasize this enough.  As one member pm'd me, it is getting harder to wade through all the posts to find the diamonds in the rough.

voj

To start the ball rolling.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - at first i thought this is like that Woman's Murder Club or something like Sex in the City goes Detective.  Surprise, surprise.  The setting is Botswana, Africa with all the poverty, customs, life unique to the area.

Kings -  As I mentioned in the other thread.  It's a modern day kingdom very loosely based on King David of the Bible.

Thanks voj!

Lost Season 5 ep 10--just kidding!

How The Earth Was Made

This series from The History Channel travels the globe to reveal the geological processes that have shaped our planet. Each episode will look at a single location and examine how the features that we see today have formed over millions of years—whether by colliding continents, volcanic eruption or the abrasive power of vast ice sheets. These processes, which intimately affect the way we live today, have been lost in the mists of time. Using the clues that were left behind, combined with expert evidence from geologists in the field, this series rolls back the millennia to see how the slow but immensely powerful forces of geology have shaped our world.

I tried out ep5 New York and it was very good. The latest episode is Great Lakes. Looking forward to Yellowstone next week. How the caldera was created should be interesting. I plan to get the previous episodes too. This is a new series. Just 7 episodes so far.

LOL. Good one. :) And thanks for this new thread Voj! Lord knows we need it.

X already namedropped Dead Set. Other interesting Brit series would include:

1. Red Riding - a detective/mystery series set during the 70s. Kind of brings back the paranoia-filled undertone of that era.
2. Horne and Corden - Sketch show from two of Gavin and Stacey's breakout stars
3. Wallander - Kenneth Branagh as Scandinavian detective. Need I say more? :)
4. Apparitions - TV horror that's creepy as hell
5. Parents of The Band - Stage parents try to control a band formed by their kids. Starring Jimmy Nail in a role that is soooo perfect for him.

As for American series, only thing I'd recommend is Chopping Block. A new reality compe***on revolving around restaurants. The concept is actually kinda lifted from Restaurant Wars. But Chopping Block is worth watching because of Marco Pierre White, the original Brit bad-ass chef. The man is brilliant but really gives you the creeps. :)

Oh! and Rupaul's Drag Race, if you can stand watching drag queens in a compe***on that melds Project Runway, Top Model and Dancing with The Stars. ;D

Comedies galore - - - The Mighty Boosh and Snuffbox and the immortal Absolute Power. All of which are not exactly recent but if you haven't seen it, then that makes it new, don't it?

And as much as it isn't exactly obscure, it's still an immense head-scratcher why no one has ever gotten hooked on Spooks aka M:I5 in this here parts. It's well into its 6th season and is hands down the finest espionage TV series out there . . . not the best TV show ever made, that would be The Wire (and yes, until a thread on this impeccable and  magnificent show hits the ground running, I will not stop preaching its gospel and converting the poor, lost unsaved out there who haven't been converted yet.)  ;D

And I am about to crack Law and Order UK soon . .. if only to see a cast member of Battlestar Galactica in a far less depressing milieu (and no, I haven't seen the finale yet so no spolierish comments please, thank you.)

Yup. And tired of seeing post after post of which episode of what show someone watched ("Chuck Season 8 Episode 2" ::) ???)  . . .tends to get monotonous and pointless after some time and a waste of the two minutes of trouble you take to check out, in case it's something like what we have here so far.

Having said that, do check out Ultraviolet, an early series by Apparitions maestro Joe Ahearne.  It's sort of like X Files only it's British and it's with vampires instead of aliens. Cracking stuff.

I think so, wedge. Haven't seen it,though, so I wouldn't know if it gets  right that cold, frosty, often glum aura I so love about Mankel's work.

A workplace comedy from the creator of Andy Richter Controls The Universe. If you like your comedy minus the laugh track with the vibe of The Office and 30 Rock, this show is for you.

Better Off Ted and Being Erica

Please provide short description.  (edit: as I was writing this, Dobler gave description for Better Off Ted).  But going forward, it would be best if we provide short info on the series we are suggesting.

Re: The Wire

I downloaded this after X44's persistent :) plugging and this is really a very well written series.  Not your run of the mill wire tap crime scenarios, this one has realism that only politics, apathy, and plain u n-common sense can provide.

I'll try Spooks soon.

p.s. Guys, let's stop bashing the other thread, it has it's purpose for some of our members, let us not rob them of their enjoyment.

Pre,

I'm reposting this from the other thread. Nag marathon ako last weekend. They'll be back for a second series next year.

Being Human (Series 1, 6 episodes)

British series about three flatmates living together in Bristol, England. Before you scream Three's Company, the trio is a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost. An entertaining mix of genres that explore the issues faced by unlikely friends as they try to lead normal lives.

Also recently finished, Eastbound and Down

Show features Danny McBride as a foul mouthed former pro baseball pitcher trying to make a comeback. Cursing has never been this quotable...

Loved Being Human and it's good that it's coming back. Hopefully, it airs alongside the new Gavin and Stacey.

I've seen Eastbound and Down, it's funny but for some reason Danny McBride bothers me hehe.

Party Down looks like it has some promise especially with Lizzie Kaplan in the cast.

Hehe. Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Now I'm off to collect my commission.  ;D ;D

Spooks is great, too. It also goes under the title M:I5.

To comply with your request, voj - - -

Mighty Boosh is a surreal Brit comedy revolving around characters played by comedians Julian Baraatt and Noel Fielding aka The Boosh. Indescribable, almost. Thanks to an Alan Moore interview, I went looking for this.

Snuffbox is another Brit sketch comedy about . . well, hangmen.

And Absolute Power is of course the classic Brit comedy about a PR firm starring the always wonderful Stephen Fry - - -his recent guest spot on Bones was one of the few things about that show I liked (although Emily Deschanel ain't so bad, hehe). It was shown for a time on one of the cable channels, I don't remember which. It's flat out  brilliant (up there with the original The Office, though way different tonally) and has since become one of my all-time faves. I have downloads but I'm thinking of getting the Region 2 DVD Box.

I'm also tracking down Space Race, not sure if its a proper series or a TV movie  but its BBC and it comes highly recommended by Warren Ellis, who is some kind of go-to man when it comes to shows worth the trouble - - -he doesn't think much of Chuck and thinks the world of Aaron Sorkin. Man has taste. Haven't seen it though so can't weigh in. But it's  based on the space race. I'm so there.

And then of course there's Doctor Who, which I'm starting to crack season per season. Not exactly an obscure recommendation, but obscure don't always mean good. And this one is.

Right on man! It's her eyes and them some. I've been watching that show since season 1. Off topic but during an appearance on Craig Ferguson's show, she told a a childhood story about Zooey. They were on an island and was told by their mom to stay out of the water since it was shark infested. Zooey then says, "Do all sharks make that noise?" (humming the Jaws theme). Just how cute is that?  ;D

Hehe. Cute story. I'm not a regular on Bones but whenever I do watch it, it's usally beacuse of our Ms.Deschanel, same way Jill Hennesey keeps me glued on Crossing Jordan. Both are not my regular type of shows but everytime I chance on them, I stay glued. ;D

Thrilla In Manila - a special featuring what many believes to be the greatest fight in history.  It is somewhat mislabeled probably due to the marketing appeal of that fight.  This is more of a post-mortem of the Ali-Frazier rivalry mostly dealing on the side least represented in media, Frazier.

Did you watch episodes 1x01 and 1x02 separately, or did you watch the special premiere episode that merged the two? In case you watched the two stand-alone episodes, they total about 8 minutes shorter than the special merged pilot, with several scenes deleted.

That's a lot of jokes you missed. ;)

Some of you might want to try these two Brit shows, which you may watch separately, but you SHOULD watch in tandem:

Moving Wallpaper & Echo Beach.

Echo Beach is your typical over-the-top soap. Think a British version of The OC. However, Moving Wallpaper is a very witty The Office-style companion show to the show. It's a mockumentary about the writing/filming/behind-the-scenes of Echo Beach. So events that happen on Wallpaper affect the storylines, casting, etc. of the other show, while also mocking how inane it is.

- Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) - Capt Hammer (hero)
- Felicia Day (Buffy

creating a buzz at youtube. Very funny.  There's a DVD but watch a few excerpts in youtube. :)

So You Think You Can Dance

like american idol but it instead of singing it is dancing (and it's quite obvious)
im not into dancning (pareho nga kaliwa paa ko eh) but when i tried to watch this especially season 4 i begin to appreciate dancing, grabe ibang klase pala dancing lalo na pag pro ang mga choreographer (lalo na si Mia Michaels).. i really recommend watching this show especially season 4...

season 5 will be on may 2009..

I actually enjoy this show better than AI.   And the host is burning hot.
Season 4 was choreographers' season.
Seasons 1-3 were dancers' seasons.

Favorite performances/performers
Danny Tidwell of Season 3
Travis Wall and Benji Schwimmer of Season 2
Sexy Back routine from Season 2 finale
Wade Robson routines

That was a really enjoyable miniseries. I found it even more fun since I actually watch the UK Big Brother, so to see the host Davina McCall playing herself-gone-zombie was hilarious!

It isn't new, but I just now discovered the original BBC "The Worst Week of My Life" series. If you like cringe comedy like the original "The Office," this falls in that category. You feel so embarrassed for the lead star.

Sadly, immediately after watching the complete series, I tried the US remake, "Worst Week." I stopped it after the first episode, since it was almost a shot-per-shot inferior remake. And not even of the BBC show's pilot - it was a version the first episode of the third season!

Worst Week is such a dismal version.

Archer (FX)

Recently renewed for a second season, it's a raunchier animated take on the 60's spy genre. Stellar voice cast includes: H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Aisha Tyler and Jessica Walter.

The Ricky Gervais Show (HBO)

The animated makeover of the wildly popular series of podcasts featuring Gervais, Stephen Merchant and their idiot friend Karl Pilkington.

The Life & Times of Tim (HBO)

Another animated gem about Tim, a laid back single working guy always stuck in awkward situations.

The Inbetweeners (BBC America)

Just like Freaks & Geeks only with horny British teenagers.

Archer is so dang funny! I like how raunchy and stupid they portray the spy genre. And Archer's sorta lazy, non-serious voice for an alleged topnotch agent is just perfect!

The Ricky Gervais Show. . Doesn't work for me. I'd rather hear the three of 'em talk. But I guess the animation will really bring to life the amusing nonsense swimming inside Karl's head.

I wonder if Krod Mandoon fits this category.

Red Riding - not actually a tv show, but a miniseries based on the novels of David Peace about the Yorkshire Rippers of the 70s. it's bleak and as one friend said, depressing.

Red Riding's really good. And it's a small feat in itself that the guys behind the show actually managed to give the series an uncanny 70s' look and feel.

Airline

Each episode showcases the highs and lows that passengers and crew face behind the scenes of the Southwest Airlines.

Follow Southwest Airlines pilots, flight attendants, and airport employees as they experience heartwarming passenger stories, occasional outbursts, weather-related anxiety and heightened security measures all while trying to meet everyone's urgent timetable. A&E Network brings the viewer behind the counter, onto the tarmac and into cockpit for this real life series.

Airline focuses on the ups and downs of passengers and Southwest's staff and crew at Los Angeles International (LAX), Chicago Midway and Baltimore/Washington International airports. Follow Southwest's staff and crew, from the customer-focused flight crews to the hard working ground crews who are often on the receiving end of a frustrated customer's wrath. America's fourth largest carrier, Southwest Airlines originated the concept of low cost, no frills travel and carries 65 million passengers every year.

Great show. Unfortunately I've only found the first season so far. Plus I think Suzy is a cutie. Too bad she only appeared in a couple of episodes.

The atmosphere it exudes contribute to the overall aura of bleakness. And I don't think the remake Hollywood is aiming for could capture the same feel of the miniseries.

And since the plot is in the dialogue, I don't think this a reco for those with ADD  ;)

Watching this now. Really promising. :) Ian McShane is the man.

I'm waiting for him to do another show. Such presence!! Could not remember if they aired/ended Kings properly. But that show's story was compelling. Yun nga lang, it's probably too heavy to understand on network TV (NBC).

Recently Discovered TV Shows You Might Not Have Heard About Yet  --- Luther. Although not so recent yun, was watching it a couple of months back. And yung Rev, which I haven't finished yet. Parang The Office, is my impression, pero mga pari. LOL. So timely, given uso na naman si Damaso. ;D

RE: Luther

Watched it because of Idris Elba. His accent can be a bit disorienting at first if you're familiar with his work on The Wire. As a series though, it kinda lost its wheels towards the end. Hopefully it gets better in season 2.

An Idiot Abroad

Haven't seen this yet but it features Karl Pilkington of the Ricky Gervais Show traveling around the world.

Childrens Hospital

Part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, it began as a web series in 2008. Rob Corddry and a comedy all star cast pokes fun of medical dramas such as Grey's Anatomy and E.R. It's been picked up for a third season recently. Highly recommended.

Paradox

Dr Christian King, a world-renowned astrophysicist, claims to have received a series of images from space. The images show fragments of an event, an explosion in which many are killed. Shockingly, Dr King claims the disaster is yet to happen. It will take place in 18 hours time.

Is this an elaborate warning of a terrorist attack, or could it be something else? Uncertain, DI Rebecca Flint and her team investigate Dr King and the images. But as the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle come together, it becomes clear that this is a chain of events which no person could possibly predict or plan.

With time running out a tragedy drawing closer DI Flint begins to contemplate the impossible - that the images might not be a coded warning or an elaborate threat, but a genuine glimpse of the future.

5 episode first season from the UK.

BAFTA TV Award winner pala ang Misfits.  It's dark yet funny and medyo nakakaloka/loko ang storylines.  Akala ko superheroes style ang dating.  The character portrayed by Robert Sheehan is particularly hilarious...and I like that the actors and actresses look like "real people."  Pero sa Filipino culture, kailangan ng parental guidance yung ibang scenes.   ;)

The Trip

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in this improvised comedy about two actors on a culinary tour of the north of England. Steve is commissioned to review half a dozen restaurants for a Sunday newspaper and plans the trip with his American girlfriend - only to face the prospect of a week of meals-for-one after she dumps him. So Steve calls old friend Rob to accompany him, and the pair find themselves debating the big questions of life over a series of delightful dishes.

^^the BBC MasterChef series was the original, and had a decade-long run from 1990-2001. This original series prompted PBS to adapt a version for USA audiences called MasterChef USA; this show aired for 2 seasons until PBS pulled the plug due to declining ratings.

In 2005, the BBC resurrected MasterChef in the UK with a revamped format and retitled it as MasterChef Goes Large. This new series became rather successful, and in 2008 they reverted the series title to the original, plain MasterChef title.

Australia made its own MasterChef series in 2009 based on the revamped BBC show, but making its own unique changes to the format. The revamped BBC series was also the basis for a MasterChef revival in the USA in 2010, this time aired on the FOX network.

The Fades (BBC)

Iain De Caestecker is Paul, a young man who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that neither his therapist or best friend, Mac, can provide answers for. Worse still, Paul is starting to see the Fades – the spirits of the dead – all around him. They're everywhere but they can't be seen, smelt, heard or touched by living beings. But now an embittered and vengeful Fade has found a way to break the barrier between the dead and the living and Paul, Mac and their friends and family are all right in the eye of the storm. But the most terrifying twist is yet to come – the fate of humanity rests in the hands of the two friends who already have enough trouble getting through a day in one piece, let alone saving the world.

I dont know the exact name of this new UK series but the theme is about disabled people who are doing things that would almost be unthinkable for their condition.

First episode is about Nic Hamilton, the brother of F1 star Lewis. I didnt even know that he is suffering from cerebral palsy.  His ambition is to become a race driver like Lewis and with the Hamiltons' full support and love, he took part in the 2011 series for hatchback looking cars.  Family is giving him that chance, or go to the uni.

Very nice and touching insights into the Hamilton family.  I never liked Lewis but I think I just became an admirer of him and his father Anthony too.

Bomb Patrol Afghanistan

This documentary series is about  the real-life "Hurt Locker" (Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit - EOD) guys during their 5-month station in Afghanistan.  That heavy space-suit looking body armour is not being used na pala - probably too heavy and inconvenient for movement.  Searching for and disposing IEDs is both nerve-wracking, timeconsuming and boring (needs lots and lots and lots of patience) job pala.

Being hooked on Arrow, friends recommended me viewing on DVD... The Greatest American Hero.  And I actually loved it.  I thought the theme song was great as well as the show.  It was a perfect blend of superhero action and comedy from a very reluctant hero.  Still finishing season1.  But I find this better than Shield! ;D

I think this should be remade for the big screen! ;)

Les Revenants (The Returned)

In an idyllic French mountain town, a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. As they struggle to reintegrate with their families and past lovers, buried secrets emerge and new mysteries develop as they grapple with a miraculous and sinister new reality. But it seems they are not the only ones to have returned from the dead. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past.

Emotional and thought-provoking with gorgeous setting and excellent music from Mogwai.

Love this show. It's a period version of The In-Betweeners.

Its a great watch along with Manhattan Love Story. Tried to remember where I saw Analeigh Tipton and realized she was the babysitter in Crazy, Stupid Love. On the other hand Pleb's Tom Rosenthal was in Friday Night Dinner series that I stopped watching since their neighbor Wilson was too annoying.

It has a typical US family show comedy pace and wit. Good enough to watch when other shows are off the air.

Dig - 10-episode limited series about an FBI agent (Jason Isaacs) stationed in Israel that uncovers a conspiracy thousands of years in the making. Premise was interesting, but execution is another story, with badly-written characters that go around doing stupid things and other stuff that don't really make sense. First half was okay but fizzles out in the second half, leading to an unsatisfying ending. Created and co-written by Tim Kring (Heroes)...no wonder.

This was originally planned to be an anthology series, in which some characters stick around for a new plot and storyline each season, but USA Network probably thought it wasn't a good idea and cancelled it, making season 1 a one-time only event miniseries. I'd say it was a good decision, LOL

Just started it, kaso hindi ko pa natapos ang first episode nakatulog ako kasi madaling ko na inumpisahan hehe! But looks really interesting, mahilig din kasi ako sa inspired/based on true events. I'm sure I would finish this in no time. ;)

BBC One has a new buddy cop series out called New Blood. It's an odd couple pairing, but unlike other similar British shows that feature tortured and weary detectives, these guys are young, cocky outsiders and they're unusually fit, being competitive athletes - and they suffer from (first world) millennial problems. I just finished all 7 episodes of the first season which features 3 story arcs. Overall, I enjoyed this one and will probably watch Season 2.

Started watching Samurai Gourmet on Netflix.

This series relaxes me and makes me hungry at the same time.  :) Season 1 has 12 episodes lasting about 30 minutes per episode.

From Bravo TV:

A live action version of a fictional Japanese manga called Manga Nobushi-no-Gourmet, the series centers on Takeshi Kasumi (played by Naoto Takenaka), a recently retired businessman who discovers that the quest for amazing food not only makes him feel alive, it ignites a dashing younger persona inside of him known as the Wandering Samurai.

I watch Killjoys -- not bad, some lighthearted scifi fare about space bounty hunters. Lead actress is kickass and kinda hot, with an accent that draws you in.

LOL, I posted this around 3 years ago.; still watch Killjoys (which is now on its 4th season), and English actress Hannah John-Kamen has appeared in movies since then, recently on Ready Player One and this July on Ant-Man and the Wasp, as the main antagonist, The Ghost

Still waiting for the next season for my old standbys to drop - Billions, Black Mirror, Succession, The Crown

Aside from these, some that I've enjoyed the most over the past year -
The Defiant Ones - Dre/Jimmy Iovine 4-part documentary
Money Heist / Las Casas de Papel - I think this has it's own topic here
Genius - two seasons out already (Einstein and Picasso)

For newer shows that I'm giving a shot, these have just been released -
All American - it's no Friday Night Lights, but decent escape, although often comes across as too cliche
Dogs - Netflix 6-episode documentary profiling various dog/human relationships
Homecoming - Based on the Gimlet podcast (which was brilliant). I'm a bit torn (I feel like I liked the podcast better), although this has gotten good reviews
The Little Drummer Girl - For John Le Carre fans. My verdict's not out yet, starting out a bit too slow, although that's typically Le Carre anyway

Latest season of House of Cards just came out (although I dropped out a season ago) with what looks like poor reviews.
Medici Season 2 also just out, - I haven't seen it, but I thought Season 1 was ok

There's also the Lebron James produced Shut Up and Dribble about political activism in sports (haven't seen yet)

For fans of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (probably some of the smarter tv out there, albeit pretty liberal), there's Patriot Act with Hassan Minhaj. pretty similar, but more stand up style, and he comes across a bit too hyper (probably nervous since it's his first solo show)

Russian Doll on Netflix. Was intrigued by the premise of it. I never watched Groundhog Day so the closest movie I can compare it to is Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow.

It's about a woman who kept dying and reliving her 36th birthday. It's a dramady (drama/comedy). It's only 8 episodes and, as usual with Netflix series, it kinda dragged sa middle part of the episodes. But it caught on and was quite enjoyable.

The Capture - When a British soldier is charged with a crime, the tenacious young detective handling his case begins to uncover a multi-layered conspiracy.

Another miniseries from BBC. I tend to like the format, no cliffhangers in between seasons, and you usually get everything tied up. I actually liked this one more than The Bodyguard

The ABC Murders - John Malkovich stars as an older but wiser Hercule Poirot as he investigates the source of a series of sinister letters written by a mysterious criminal in the early 1930s in England. Although he is no longer revered, when murders begin occurring in relation to the letters, Poirot takes the case into his own hands and deploys his detective skills in order to find the killer before they strike again. Malkovich stars alongside Rupert Grint and Andrew Buchan in this three-part crime-drama series.

Another miniseries from the BBC. Fairly predictable, but it's John Malkovich and it's only 3 episodes, so why not

Godfather of Harlem - In the early 1960s, infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson returns from 10 years in prison to find the neighbourhood he once ruled in shambles; with the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Bumpy must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control.

Saw the first two episodes, a bit promising, but I'm not entirely sure I'll stick with it. Then again, I've always had a soft spot for Forest Whitaker

Modern Love - A co-production of Amazon Studios and the New York Times, this anthology series explores love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms, as well as its effects on the human connection. Each episode brings to life a different story that has been inspired by the newspaper's popular Modern Love column. The romantic comedy series features a star-studded cast that includes such notable actors as Jane Alexander, Emmy winner Tina Fey, Andy Garcia, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel and John Slattery.

Easy, half an hour anthologies, with a well known cast. Not a show to binge, but have to let each episode sink in. Liked the first two, thought Anne Hathaway's was too heavy. Tina Fey's was forgettable/unlikeable/unrelatable. Saving the remaining ones for later.

Looking For Alaska - Miles "Pudge" Halter wants to gain a deeper perspective on life, so he enrolls in boarding school. While he's there, he gains a group of loyal friends and falls in love with Alaska Young. When an unexpected tragedy strikes, the close-knit group of friends try to make sense of what they have been through. The limited series is based on the John Green novel of the same name, and it was created by Josh Schwartz, whose teen-TV pedigree includes Fox drama series "The O.C." and CW's "Gossip Girl."

I've actually never watched anything adapted from a John Green novel, but vaguely recognize him as a teen melodrama expert. TV folks at reddit seemed to rave about this one so i figured will give it a shot. I can't believe I finished it (probably shouldn't have). It's not horrible, but I guess I'm just the wrong target audience. Fairly predictable at times too, and the characters were so not relatable.

a few new ones (or newly discovered ones)

upload - A man is able to choose his own afterlife after his untimely death.

interesting concept, and can be funny. short episodes (which is great), but also sometimes criticized for the subtle (and not so subtle) amazon agenda

gangs of london - The city of London is being torn apart by the turbulent power struggles of the international gangs that control it and the sudden power vacuum that's created when the head of London's most powerful crime family is assassinated.

some of the most violent scenes i've seen on tv, with a connection to the raid. it's not brilliant, but entertaining enough

black monday - A group of newcomers strive to take advantage of Wall Street's perilous situation and overcome the institution's veteran operators.

far from perfect, but has its hilarious moments

zerozerozero - Chaos ensues while a shipment of cocaine is smuggled from South America to Europe.

for those looking for a narcos-style fix. same writer as gomorrah which was great

into the night - When the sun starts to kill everything in its path, a plane full of passengers must travel at night in an attempt to escape its destructive power and find some place safe.

it's like your guilty pleasure. hardly high brow, far from intellectual tv, but with only 6 episodes, it's immensely bingeable.

normal people - Connell and Marianne start socialising as friends in Dublin. Marianne introduces Connell to her group, and one of her friends, Teresa is interested in him. Marianne is still dating Gareth, but her interest in the relationship is beginning to fade.

getting a lot of good press, partly because of the strong following of the source novel (which i never heard of). it's deeper than the usual teenage/YA drama, pretty high production value, and pretty strong performances from the two leads. and lots of nudity.

condor - After a low-level CIA analyst returns from lunch to discover everyone in his office has been killed, he goes on the run trying to elude hit men and uncover the truth about who is behind the murders. Based on the film "Three Days of the Condor."

i'm surprised this isn't more popular, actually. tight-paced, just 10 episodes, and pretty gratifying. i actually liked this more than season two of jack ryan

Black Bird (Apple TV+) - A compelling true crime / prison / serial killer drama with an outstandingly creepy, twisted and unsettling performance from Paul Walter Hauser and an excellently vulnerable supporting turn from the late Ray Liotta. Lead star Taron Egerton solidly holds his own, playing against the two. Perhaps some episodes could have been shortened by a few minutes, but this is still a very good 6 episodes mini-series.

Just recently discovered Space Battleship Yamato 2199 animated series.  This is a remake of the original series from the 70s.  The storyline is still basically the same though this version gives more depth to the characters including the motivations of the Gamilas, and not just the generic aliens wanting to exterminate the human race plotline.

When responsible parents are involved and the schools are good then less likely you'll have Euphoria-like high schoolers.

Beef (Netflix) - Smartly written adult drama series with dashes of dark comedy and thriller elements. Superbly acted by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong together with an able supporting cast. The road rage set-up might seem familiar, but the direction the show goes and escalates to is quite absorbing. The characters are never simply in black or white, but shades of gray -- all very fallible, flawed and deeply human. There are portions when it can be a hard watch, but it does pay off in the end.

There’s a bbc reality show called Traitors that you might want to check out.  There are contestants called the Faithful who have to perform challenges to increase their grand prize , then they have to “banish” or vote out  fellow contestants who they suspect are the show’s chosen Traitors.
The traitors plot to kick off or “ murder” strong or smart contestants each night , as part of their strategy,  while acting innocent and influencing others during the day. In the end, if the Faithful successfully boot out all the Traitors, they share the cash prize. But if there is even one Traitor remaining, he gets all the cash.

Probably one of the standout miniseries of 2023.  I am sad that many won't be able to see this but it is extraordinary among spy thrillers and has to be up there with the likes of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  It has a sublime script and acted superbly by an excellent cast.

Btw, this is one of the rare times for me to see Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers, Homeland, Billions) speaking in an English accent.  This accent's a bit snotty too and probably not his daily driver.

I started to get addicted watching episodes of this British game show on YouTube called Pointless. It's sort of like reverse Family Feud meets Jeopardy. The goal of the game is to give the most obscure correct answers to trivia questions the LEAST number of 100 people surveyed got and if you get a correct answer than none of the 100 people answered correctly, you score a pointless answer and they add money to the jackpot. For example: if the question is "Name a U.S. president". You don't answer "Barack Obama" or "George Bush". You have to reach deep into your brain and pull out, let's say, "Ulysses S. Grant" or "Martin Van Buren" which would guarantee you lower or even no points.

Though it sometimes get too UK-centric, it is pretty fun and relaxing to watch and play along to see how much obscure knowledge you actually know.
