:'( Awww... Wala na si Nuria! I've been a bit busy kasi the past few weeks (ironically, because of spanish homework and preparing for my "gala" at the Instituto Cervantes Xmas party) which is why I've been watching OT on a one-week tape delay basis. I missed taping this weeks ep pa because my sis unplugged the VCR again even if I stuck a "Don't Touch!" post-it on it.

Sayang talaga si Nuria! Ang galing pa naman niya during the jamming session and the duet with Luis Fonsi! Oh well, she still does seem to have a bright future as a performer ahead of her.

Spiff, no it's not just you. Gumagaling nga ata talaga si Ramon. He somehow even managed to upstage Mario, Mr. Enthusiasm himself! Kaso, mas lalong sumasama ugali niya.

Vicente's vocal quality has been in decline naman. I think it's because of his heavy smoking, made even more heavier I gather from the stress. He really should've started following the profesores' advice and stopped with the fuma. Unless he plans to sing like Joe Cocker in the future.

Noelia's cute, and sings okay. But why didn't she lose any weight during all these weeks at the academy? Poor Bea, she's probabaly gonna put the poundage back on while convalescing.

you're so right! ako rin i was so impressed when nuria sang with luis fonsi LIVE! wow! i caught luis' performance in the miss world competition and he didn't shine as much there as when he did during the OT gala... (am hoping nuria had something to do with that.)

also... i have been noticing that while jorge, leticia, bea and even davinia (just a little bit) have lost some weight during their stay in la academia... si noelia naman parang lumalaki... i seem to remember na wala syang double chin when she started...

with nuria gone... i am now rooting for miguel... seriously, i think the guy CAN sing! next is davinia or leticia then ramon... yeah yeah! i admit... ramon is impressing me a lot lately ... there's more to this guy pala than just being (as one judge put it:) 'muy caliente'! he he he. vicente is just plain "boring" (for me at least.)... he's so....erm,  flat. great baritone... but he better quit smoking cause his looks ain't gonna make him endearing forever.

HEY JUDE! ano kanta mo sa gala dyan sa instituto? mag-a-ala nuria ka rin ba? he he he... if i were given a chance to learn to sing en espanol ... gusto ko matutunan "mienteme" by david bisbal and elena gadel... or maybe zucherro's "baila morena" or perhaps "siete vidas" para maikli ... have you seen this bisbal guy perform... grabe! galeng showmanship! (and the voice ain't too bad either.)

ang taka ko... if bea decides to come back... will she still have to audition??

Luis appeared to really enjoy performing with Nuria.  :) Diba he handpicked her? I kinda blame the stylists for Nuria's exit. They should've played down her figure more. Less gifted spanish girls seemed to be voting against her out of spite.

Yeah, Noelia did get bulkier. Saying that she didn't seem to lose any weight was just a more diplomatic way of putting it.

I'm sort of gunning for Miguel now too. Although he's a rather puny second choice after Nuria. He seems like a nice guy. Jovial, nice relationship with his parents. Davinia is cute, but a teeny bit lacking in X factor. Leticia is looking a bit long in the tooth.

I'm not gonna sing sa Instituto, just playing my cello. Tried looking for spanish pieces pero they all looked too difficult, baroque kasi. I'm just doing Vivaldi's Spring, a zippy etude by Schroeder, Gruber's Silent Night, and if I can get it right in time (and against my teacher's advice), Bach's Prelude to Suite #1 for Solo Cello. I sorta considered doing a sing-and-play number. But I'm not that kapalmuks. Napilitan nga lang ako in the first place. But if I were to sing in Spanish I'd like to do Cinerama's "Dura, Rapida, Y Hermosa" and/or Mikel Erentxun's "Esta Luz Nunca Se Apagara".  :)

wow! dalawa na pala ang nagka-klase sa instituto! how is it nga ba? masaya ba? kayo na siguro tutulong samin ni hanky para maintindihan yung finer details of the show... inis talaga ako pag ang bibilis nila mag-kastila (mabagal kasi me maghanap sa dictio)... or worse, yung nagsasalita may lazy "esses", and they pronounce c's and s's as "th"! (aaaugh!)

dang! nagsisisi talaga ako ng kaunti at di pa ako kumuha ng spanish during my college days!  :P

I doubt that you'll like spanish if you took it up in college because very academic daw ang approach. You might even be one of those people saying how unfortunate you were at naabutan ka pa ng spanish in college, hehehe.

I find the classes very enjoyable at instituto since conversational ang approach and there's hardly any pressure. Pero like learning any new language marami raming memorization......damn those irregular verbs!  ;D lol

I'm now starting to get bits and pieces of those diego torres songs. ;D

or worse, yung nagsasalita may lazy "esses", and they pronounce c's and s's as "th"! (aaaugh!)

Don't forget the regional differences when it comes to pronounciation as well.

Actually, its only the latin american countries that pronounce C and Z as "esses". The two letters are pronounced as "TH" in spain when followed by the letters e or i. Kaya napabili tuloy ako ng Alejandro Sanz for the pronounciation of certain words, lol ;D

if this is any consolation to ya instituto peeps... my cousin who went to spain to continue her spanish studies (after going to IC), was deemed too good for her level and was accelerated to the next one after only a few meetings. so i guess you guys are getting yer money's worth.  ;)

American Idol: Christmas Songs

December 17, 8:00PM/11:30PM, on Star World

Spiff, did they show this last Wednesday? My SkyCable was down all night Wednesday-Thursday morning, so I don't know if this aired. Funny, though, that I never saw a single on-air station plug for this show.

Also... do the finals for Operacion Triunfo air during the show's usual schedule?

nope. it didn't air. instead they showed a britney spears special called "in the zone"... i was so disappointed.  :'(

to be fair tho... even GUIDE listed na ito (and not that britney special) yung dapat ipapalabas.  ::)

nope... i heard ainhoa (the daily show hostess) mention that the finals will be on the 21st... 9.45 PM their time. that means the final gala will be shown at 4.45 AM monday (not the usual tuesday) Manila Time. i could be wrong about my time conversion tho.

finals na rin ang operacao triunfo right? who got into the finals? the chubby girl?

BTW,  OT watchers... keep on watching at the regular schedule even tho the finals is done... the academia will continue to air as the three top placers will stay at the academia to prepare for the eurovision gala... unless of course the rules have changed again... :-\

I'm glad I asked! I didn't understand what they were saying, so I would've missed the finals completely.

I'm not sure if it's the finals already for Operacao, since the last episode was just like any other, with two people in the hot seat for possible voting off next week. But that would be strange, since that would mean the remaining contestants would have to spend Christmas at the Academy?

The fat girl is still in, though. But I think it's going to be an easy victory in the finals, since maybe 80% of the time, the same guy is in the #1 position each week. When he's not, he's still nominated in the top 3.

If it actually is the last gala, then both shows will be airing grand finals at the same time?

Thank God for multiple VCRs.  ;)

well... it's finally over... can't say i was shocked by the results... this has to be the most disappointing win i have ever witnessed in the show's three-year run. personally, i was rooting for miguel... but would've been perfectly alright if ramon won (after all, he did seem to have improved the most.) ramon's win was also the most emotional... even ice-queen nina shed a tear. IMO, the ganador totally does NOT deserve his first place finish. but then in the end... this isn't about talent. just popularity.

here's how the three ganadores fared in the votes:
vicente = 25.07%
ramon = 24.33%
miguel = 16.39%

if all those who voted for leticia, divinia and mario vote for either miguel or ramon in the gala eurovision... vicente won't be going to the EV song contest. bwa ha ha ha! ... oops.. excuse me. sorry bout that... ::)

most eye-popping number has to be leticia's... it was certainly... erm, different? (is she one of the "chicas malas"?)

i feel so sorry for divinia... she is still a winner in my heart... that girl absolutely glows!

i finally found out why mario suddenly looks much better... after watching is montage i suddenly realized INAYOS PALA KILAY NYA! he he he... if you watched, you'll know what i mean.

grabe! super emotional si marrieta (on the left) 'no? iyak sya ng iyak... i think it was quite obvious that nina was disappointed in the no. 3 result. it was so nice to see angel again. and ainhoa! wow! what a change!

p.s. in case anyone is wondering... yes, david bisbal and chenoa are an "item"... same with hugo and nika (kaya nga pareho silang late... he he he) i feel so sorry for mai... someone needs to recognize her talent...  :'(

p.s. vicente... you really need to quit the fuma... in case you need some inspiration to quit, i have two words for ya: "jeremy irons". ::)

There's maybe at least one similar number every week at Operacao. Seriously!

It was an interesting finale. It would've been twice as much fun if I knew who the guests were, but they're all strangers to me - and they ALL have their own CD releases!  ::)

Not understanding much throughout the entire run show, I wasn't really rooting for anyone. But the winner clearly has the most limited range of all the contestants. I think he can only sing Spanish ballads and nothing else. I don't see a career for him as a pop or rock star. Maybe country-western.  ;D

The winner is really based on popularity and not talent on these shows. This was most obvious with Fame Academy, where the 2nd-4th placers were all clearly better performers than the winner.

But being the winner doesn't necesarily mean you'll have the more successful career, anyway. Just ask Gareth Gates and Clay Aiken.  :)

On to watch my Operacao tape. From what I understand (if I read the web site right), this week's show was just a Christmas special, and the remaining students get some sort of Christmas break before resuming again.

So you were saying... Operacion will continue with the three top placers? Even the weekly gala? Or just daily shows?

yup... it should continue to air... the daily show that is... i think they'll get a break from the galas since mukhang wala nang "gala ganadores". instead... we'll be treated to their rehearsals of the eurovision song entry nominees... two or three original songs will be given to each ganador... and from those, the viewers will chose which they like best and that will be spain's official entry to the ESC.

in the previous years kasi... it was DURING the gala ganadores that the prizes were given (one from endesa and another from vale music.) also discussed during gala ganadores is what vale music has in store for the upcoming albums... (don't worry, i have last year's on tape so you can see for yourself... as soon as i can dub it, i'll give ya a copy...as well as the eurovision prelims and the eurovision final of last year.) dun din sa gala ganadores dapat sana yung mga duetos ng mga finalistas. pero since ginawa na yun last time... mukhang wala na nga.

would you be interested to see the guests perform... they all performed nung the GENERACION OT gala (which i also have on tape)... magugulat kas a stage presence ni david bisbal!

i have to admit... i shed a small tear when i saw ainhoa's winning moment during last week's final... even now as i recall it... it sends shivers down my spine! just hearing rosa's voice call her name was so emotional for me... (hate kasi sya ni nina and the other judges that time so they always tried to find ways to get rid of her... she was called nga the "eternal nominada" by HOLA! magazine! but she showed em all! i was rooting for her since about gala 6!)

Hmm, I don't think I can make the effort to watch daily shows. Can you please keep me posted if there are any bigger ones to look out for, like actual performances or maybe the public vote day?

BTW, if you have a free VCR, the Christmas Special of Operacao (rerun on December 24th, 10:40PM Manila time - if I computed right) was very nice. It opens with hostess Catarina Furtado doing a sexy "Santa Baby" dance number. Then all the remaining students sing classical theater song duets - with the professors! Next up: the top 7 of OT1 come out - each does an English Christmas song duet with one of the top 7 OT2 students. After that, all the losers come out, from both editions of the show. They're also paired up OT1-OT2 for a traditional Portuguese Christmas carol. And at the end, Catarina announces that the remaining contestants will be allowed to go home for the holidays. They literally jump for joy at this unexpected (?) Christmas break.

Thoughout the show, there's only one number flashing - not to vote for contestants, but to call to pledge a Christmas donation for special children.

Very heartwarming. Perfect for Christmas viewing.

yes quite nice... i will remember to watch that...it looks like operacao is once again emulating operacion's last season... in OT2 españa... the christmas special was entitled "la fuerza de la vida"... it was for the benefit of Queen Sofia's charity to help children from thirld world countries... members of OT1, throughout the show, reported from the different benificiary countries like India, Uganda and Ethiopia. It showed them interacting with the kids! meanwhile, in the studio, the concursantes sang duets with each other, the profesores and special guests like diego torres. (hi quidam! dito nanggaling yung OT version ng "color esperanza"!) the season hadn't ended then... i think asa gala 8 or 9 pa lang. so the evicted used this time to interact with those still in the academia.

also to commemorate the event, the double album (also called "a fuerza de la vida") released for this event was launched... by the gala before new years... the CD is awarded as the highest selling CD in spain... beating out Madonna's die another day...   :P (if you want i can give ya a copy.)

of course... i'll let ya know when the eurovision gala will happen... for sure naman it will take place eh.  ;D

Actually, they also had the special children on the show - each had one of the OT1 alumni as a "Big Brother". And there's also a CD of the show.

Creepy parallels, huh?

i know... veeeerrry creepy! i think the current operacao2  is like operacion2's twin! (although they didn't have any kids on the show. just footages of the OT1 alums visiting the charity's beneficiaries)

i wouldn't be shocked if operacao3 mimics the recently concluded operacion.  :-X

since World Idol will be held on christmas day, i thought i should post this who's who of world idol article that i found. (haven't seen it posted on this thread yet)

The who's who of World Idol
December 22, 2003

Will American Idol Kelly Clarkson romp to victory? What about Belgium's rogue metaller, or our very own Guy Sebastian? Peter Robinson weighs up the form.

Heinz Winckler - South Africa

The South African series boasted alleged voting syndicates, a presenter who was admitted into drug rehab halfway through the series and a last-minute rejig to the format to avoid an all-white finale. Still, enough of the boring stuff - let's talk about dogs. Heinz has a 14-year-old Maltese, with whom he recently stayed at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Oudekraal, the only five-star hotel in South Africa that allows pets in bedrooms.

Diana Karazon- Pan-Arabic Region

"I feel success in every moment," says Diana, who won SuperStar in August following a gruelling 21-week search. "Especially when I stare at my mother's face." Upon winning, Diana said nothing, but dedicated her performance to the people of Lebanon, the people of Jordan, His Majesty King Abdullah, the Arab nation as a whole and the children of Palestine. Which makes a change from "my stylist". Fortunately, the final, in which Jordanian Karazon and Syrian Rowaida Attiyeh battled it out, managed not to cause any serious political "issues". The power of music, eh?

Kurt Nilsen - Norway

Kurt thrashed runner-up Gaute Ormsen, who has since been described as "the Norwegian Justin Timberlake". Both Nilsen and Ormsen recorded the song eventually released by the winner - She's So High, a cover of a song that scraped into the UK Top 30 in 1999. Back then it had been performed by the son of Randy "You know, as in Turner Overdrive" Bachman, and it is just as wonderful today.

Peter Evrard - Belgium

This Andrew WK lookalike performed Nirvana's Lithium during the Idol heats. After debuting what would be his first single on grand final night, he said: "I'd never have chosen that single, but it could have been a lot worse." Of his wardrobe, he adds: "I always wear black because it's easy to combine. I don't have to ask myself whether this colour goes with that colour." Peter's debut album is called Rhubarb.

Ryan Malcolm - Canada

Back home in Ontario, Ryan - whose all-engulfing fame led him to open the Hamilton 2003 World Cycling Festival - and two other members of the Malcolm clan enjoyed minor success as a covers band. Their ace-sounding A Bit of Nostalgia - Requestfully Yours is available now at http://www.abitofnostalgia.com.

Alexander Klaws - Germany

Some 62 per cent of German 14- to 49-year-olds watched the grand final, in which housewives' choice Alexander overcame flu and romped to victory. A shame he ever recovered, really. His most recent single was from a German gladiator film. In Free Like the Wind he sings: "He fights hard, will he reach his aim? He'll survive for his friends, he is like a crying wolf tonight. He is the winner in the end." Well, that's ruined the film for the rest of us, hasn't it?

Kelly Clarkson - US

Clarkson's stepfather calls her Mariah Kelly, because it sounds a bit like Mariah Carey, who is a singer, like Kelly. The hours must just fly by in Dallas. Upon winning, the ex-cocktail waitress filmed From Justin to Kelly, a summer holiday romp with runner-up Justin Guarini that made S Club's Seeing Double look like Citizen Kane.

Jamai Loman - Netherlands

Jamai has an interesting selection of spectacle frames and has lent his tones to songs such as Always on My Mind, Love is all Around and Everything I Do (I Do for You). Frankly, there is no way on Earth this man will win World Idol.

Will Young - UK

Will's mature new direction is reflected perfectly by his new album sleeve, in which the world's first Pop Idol is pictured jumping off a dry stone wall. Will came out as gay shortly after winning Pop Idol, but while you'd find Fred Durst more likely to discuss the ins and outs of life as a homosexual, Will did go out and buy Kylie's Slow the morning it was released.

Alicja Janosz - Poland

Since winning Idol, Alicja has decided she wants to be called Alex. Fair enough. A massive-selling debut album is already out of the way and she's tipped to represent Poland in next year's Eurovision Song Contest with I'm Still Alive, a song whose title seems to epitomise the struggle all Pop Idols face when it comes to their second album. Alex/icja puts her success down to God-given talent, hard work and luck. "I don't know anything more than this," she concludes.

Guy Sebastian - Australia

Guy, who calms himself down before a performance by entering what he terms "Grooveland", is the newest Idol of the lot. A committed Christian, Guy found maintaining his virginity during Australian Idol "freaking hard".

see this page for pics: http://www.worldidol.tv/contestants.asp

The Official site (http://www.worldidol.tv/ ) also has the voting scheme up. Apparently it will be like the Eurovision contest. Each country cannot vote for their own contestant (it's automatically ranked no. 1)  but their votes for other countires will be tallied and then ranked. The final ranking will have corresponding points and the one with the most points wins. Well at least that's how i understand it.

filmed From Justin to Kelly, a summer holiday romp with runner-up Justin Guarini that made S Club's Seeing Double look like Citizen Kane.

Hahaha! That's gotta be one of the best descriptions of that movie that i've heard of. Both films kinda suck..... seeing double will make you feel empty and worthless after seeing it. Unlike with From justin to kelly, you still end up feeling empty and worthless pero at least you'll be humming a couple of tunes from the movie after. ;D

BTW, if you have a free VCR, the Christmas Special of Operacao (rerun on December 24th, 10:40PM Manila time - if I computed right) was very nice.

Whoops, I computed wrong - it's December 25th at 10:40PM.

Hope you didn't wait for it, Spiff.  ;D

does anyone with a VCR still have MNET?

I wanna watch world idol. I think kelly clarkson is going to win but i'm sorta roting for peter evrard too (from belgium i think) managed to listen to a couple of his singles and he sounds like kurt cobain/eddie vedder. I'd ather he win than the usual boy band belters.

you're not the only one who's dying to see this. ;D

i think he's the oldest contestant as well. parang rock nga ang orientation nya musically... that might prove an advantage... that would set him apart from the other world idols..  :P

Spiff, I was just checking out the World Idol web site, and it turns out that this year's Idols was the most watched series in the history of South African television.

We have good taste.  ;D

I didn't know each country except the US had its own host for World Idol. It must've been weird to tape that.

I hope I get to see this soon.

hopefully we will if everything goes as planned.  ;)

Anyway, was reading up and one of the idol sites had the  list of the diff hosts.

UK: ant and Dec
Canada: Ben Mulroney
USA: Ryan Seacrest
Australia: Andrew G.

Each broadcast is edited slightly differently with the respective hosts presenting local segments and doing the segues from performance to judge commentary. Also was able to see clips of the judge comments from the different broadcasts and they chose to edit which comments to show based on the country it was being boradcasted in. the only constant was simon cowell who was in every one of them.  ::)

The judges are evil! my fave comment was "You have the voice of an angel but you look like a hobbit. If we were looking for middle-earth idol, you'de be the hands down winner". Mwa ha ha.

I have a feeling kelly might not be such a lock for winning after all. The backlash might hurt her and Guy Sebastian's (aus) ) performance was generally well praised by the judges. Most of the criticism of him was for his odd looks rather than his talent.

But Seacrest's not on the list at the official site: World Idol Hosts. Maybe he came in at the last minute, since he thought it might conflict with his new duties as host of American Top 40?

Poor Casey Kasem.  ;D

i thought guy sebastian shaved his head after winning... shouldn't that have made him look somewhat more "common"?  ;D

so hindi na pareho yung US and UK feed... ant and dec (aka PJ and duncan) aren't hosting the US feed anymore... ganun ba?  ???
