If you don't expect it soon, baka mas madami ka nang options by then. PlayReady 3.0 support ang stumbling block ng PCs ngayon pagdating sa playback ng UHD sources.

Interesting ang Raven Ridge, ang tanong na lang kung may PlayReady 3.0 support (or if providers like Netflix will change gears by dropping the PR3 requirement).

Regardless of the CPU, if you have a Geforce 10-series card (which is Play Ready 3.0 certified btw), the latest drivers enable 4K Netflix streaming already. I'm just not so sure with other 4K/UHD sources though.

This is true now, as discussed last May. Nvidia is trying to differentiate their midrange products from their low end offerings, however. Apparently the feature is not enabled for boards with less than 3 GB of dedicated GPU memory. This pegs the minimum to GTX models (GTX 1050 or higher), unless someone plugs 4 GB of memory on the GT 1030 later on.

GTX 1050 TI ung pinakamababa na GPU for 4k HDR. 4GB memory ng 1050 TI compared sa 2GB ng basic 1050. Problema lang, Netflix at Amazon pa lang ang may HDR content at physical BD. For HVEC 4K in file form, hindi pa HDR un. Even without HDR, maganda pa rin panoorin since 4k.

they are saying that the upcoming XBox One X is a very expensive console, but if you're looking to build an HTPC, I think that the XBox One X is a good alternative ... you get the 4K HDR video, ATMOS (and other mainstream audio standard), UHD BD player - which I think are the main features that most HTPC builders are looking for ... it's cheap compared to a decent spec HTPC, and you have the gaming console capability and other features of XBox ... looking at the specs posted by Sir GI Joe, I think that the XBox One X ticks all his requirements, and this is priced for less than 30k

here are the specs -

CPU: Eight-core 2.3GHz processor
GPU: 40 compute units at 1172MHz
RAM: 12GB GDDR5 (shared between system and GPU)
Bandwidth: 326GB/s
Storage: 1TB hard disk
Disc: UHD Blu-ray player
Video: 4K output, HDR 10 support
Audio: DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Atmos, PCM 2.0, 5.1, 7.1
Wireless: Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, IR blaster
Connectors: 2x HDMI (2.0b out, 1.4b in), 3x USB 3.0 ports, IR out, S/PDIF, Ethernet

Look for something that has thunderbolt on-board. Chances are, it offers HDMI 2.0b and HDCP 2.2 built-in.

Example: ASRock Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming-ITX/ac

It is great value indeed based on the included hardware and out of the box capability. An HTPC's main advantage over it is flexibility to do other things and expandability.

Fortunately more games are now available between Xbox One and PC, so having both is even better.

It can do the job as long as you're not looking for deep color at that resolution (it can do 12 bpc at 720p, afaik). It should handle H.264 AVC adequately (native support is actually for MPEG-4 Part 2, but there is still some acceleration for newer formats). It will struggle with high res H.265 and VP9.

Kulang sa VRAM ang GT1030 if 4k HDR playback... Just tested right now, using 4k HDR video demos, using GTX1050ti 4GB & a measly AMD A8 procie: ung VRAM utilization nya is hitting 57% on some scenes while CPU is at 40-50%.

Given waaay powerful ung GTX 1050ti 4GB compared to GT1030, I think if a slower card with 2GB VRAM will reach 100% utilization at all times. Probably magee-stutter na ung video nyan.. NVIDIA should have put 4GB VRAM in that card for the HTPC fans (or fanboys :).

Btw, I also happen to own an NMT, Minix U9-H (4k HDR capable)... If I compare the PQ of the HTPC vs the NMT, may konting edge na lang ung HTPC PQ-wise given I used the same video file & 4k TV..

It used to be a few years ago, wala talaga sinabi PQ ng NMT vs HTPC with an AMD Radeon card plus Splash Pro EX, today this gap is getting narrower compared before... I think the only way for the HTPC to widen the gap again is for media-players (Mirilis & PDVD or DAUM) is to create a media player with very good 4k video post-processing capability. Un nga lang baka minimum CPU requirement will be octa-core with 16threads :(

Graphics memory utilization should not depend on GPU performance for video playback. You are correct on the memory being inadequate though; the GT 1030 does get to fill its onboard memory when playing back certain materials. I believe this is why they require 3 GB of onboard memory to support Netflix 4k.

Bluray / HD-DVD quality or lower in common formats (conventional VC-1, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 and MPEG-1) kaya nyan. Sa newer high res formats like MPEG-H and VP9 mahirapan kung mataas na quality, malaki chance magdrop ng frames sa complex scenes.
