Rumor: Remastered Gladiator Blu-ray Coming Up

Quote
The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, is reporting that Paramount Home Entertainment, in cooperation with Universal Studios Home Entertainmment, will re-issue Gladiator  on Blu-ray later this year, using a brand-new 1080p transfer that was just completed "a couple of months ago." Bill Hunt says this was done "after Paramount and Universal realized how bad the first one was, naturally."

Again according to the Bits' sources, the studio plans to schedule this Blu-ray rerelease for late summer or fall, to coincide with either the theatrical or (more probably) the home video release of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, and possibly labeled as a 10th Anniversary Edition.

There is no information as to whether there will be an exchange program for the first edition of this title. There is no information either of a rerelease in other territories.

The coming version is not a double-dip gimmick.  It intends to correct the current BD version's mastering errors.

here is the article as mentioned by ment in bluray.com

Gladiator Remastered Blu-ray and Exchange Program (Update) Share47
Posted July 22, 2010 08:47 PM by Juan Calonge

After months of rumors, announcements and cancellations, a new Blu-ray edition of Ridley Scott's Gladiator has at last been actually released in the Netherlands. Eager enthusiasts have compared the picture quality of this new release with that released last year and confirmed that the image is now noticeably superior. The Digital Bits has received confirmation that this remastered disc will also be available in the US, and that Paramount Home Entertainment will implement a "limited exchange program."

The studio admits that the first edition had edge enhancement and digital video noise reduction, but it does not acknowledge that the product was defective.

Rather, it posits that some consumers "may have preferential issues with some of the technical DVNR (digital video noise reduction) and EE (edge enhancement) choices made in the original source transfer, and so would prefer to exchange it for one that addresses those preferences in a different manner. While the version that we originally distributed was of the highest quality, some enthusiasts may prefer to view it without the Edge Enhancement and DVNR implemented as standard process in bringing the film to hi-def. This new master resolves those issues."

Those interested in receiving a replacement disc should contact Paramount Home Entertainment's service hotline number 323-956-3010 for instructions.

For those in North America who don't yet own the disc, a running production change has been initiated, so future copies shipped to retailers will include the new transfer. In other countries around the world, the new disc is being gradually rolled out in each region by Universal: contact your local distributor for details.

Update

Universal (which holds the UK rights to the movie) is also setting up an exchange program, and is sending the following instructions: "If you wish to exchange your original DVNR (digital video noise reduction) feature disc we ask that you send us just your disc 1 in an envelope with your name and address enclosed. Please keep your original packaging and we will post you out a new disc 1."

Disc 1 should be mailed to the following address:

Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd
'Gladiator Exchange'
Prospect House
80-110 New Oxford Street
London
WC1A 1HB

New discs will not be available in the UK for approximately one month.

August 1, 2010 daw na-release ang US remastered version, according to blu-ray.com:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gladiator-Blu-ray/14649/#UserReviews

Paramount is keeping quiet about it.  They don't want to incur losses from replacement expenses.

From thedigitalbits, how to ID the remastered version:

The way people are identifying them now is two things: First, the top of the case for the new remastered Blu-ray doesn't have the typical white security sticker. Second, the cardboard sleeve on the back is missing the text "2-DISC SET" above the Paramount logo in the bottom right corner. (See image below) We want to caution you, WE CAN'T GUARANTEE that this is a 100% foolproof way to spot the new version. So as always, caveat emptor!

From The Digital Bits:
Gladiator BD exchange

A lot of readers who have successfully contacted the Gladiator BD exchange program have sent us the instructions they've been given. For U.S. consumers, mail Disc One of the old Blu-ray ONLY to...

PHE MKT
c/o Deluxe Media Mgmt
PO Box 801464
Valencia, CA 91380-1464

Enclose your name, address and phone number. They'll send you back the new remastered Disc One in about 4 weeks.

Better ask them first. The Digital Bits mention that the remastered version started appearing in some Best Buy stores first week of August.

I want a remastered Gladiator, but I'm holding back because I might get the wrong version.

It's ranked "Tier 0" at avsforum's BD tier thread, talo pa ang Braveheart!

How to really tell if the disc being sent out is the "fix"? Did they change the menu screens like what other studios did with Fifth Element or Casino Royale?
